Question in the room to any coder, does anyone have an opinion on the qwen3-coder 19GB 30B Parameter model? I am trying it and it seems to generate pretty functional stuff...

karmic tiger
#

my opinion is, learn to write your own code instead?

paper saffron
#

Well I started using it to start learning c++, I asked it to write a code UI widget in HTML5 and my thinking is that it can deliver stuff that I could optimize with my knowledge

copper pasture
#

the answer is the same as with any of these models. if you don't already know how to code pretty well you will have a hard time. using it to learn stuff can be an absolute casino that will put you on the wrong track if you're not capable of already discerning correct from incorrect

livid plover
#

+1 to learning by AI is likely setting yourself up for failure or reliance on it for everything

paper saffron
#

Well I tried with another tool to create a little Qt/C++ application that actually only reads RAM Usage and CPU Times, it has a drawer issue with QPaint in some circumstances as I might not handle stuff correctly but it is mostly functional. But it helped me a lot to state variables and functions with the right variable types as I am not used to do this in JS, PHP.

livid plover
#

did you learn why you'd pick a double over an int then?

maiden yoke
paper saffron
#

with double I get precision and with int I get performance if I don't require accuracy

copper pasture
#

if you want to learn something but you're asking the llm to generate code for you, you're not really going about it the right way. syntax is very easy to learn, that's not the point of learning a language

paper saffron
#

Well I have written Javascript and PHP mostly wrapped in AJAX and I am running into different issues in C++ and UI handling as I noticed that it is handled differently and I just know that I pass the Interface in a very Quick and Dirty way. Therefore it crashes.

karmic tiger
#

therefore you should learn how to do it proper

copper pasture
#

I don't think you're actually learning anything, you're just having the llm generate something and you don't know why it's not actually good

#

and the answer to that is not to wonder if the llm has enough billions of parameters

paper saffron
#

Well thats the biggest thing I can run on my VM, I could try to run the 32GB model, but I don't know if I am really going to have much improvement due to better quantisation/precision. I was kind of surprised what it spits out if you ask 2-3 questions, even telling it what the actuall issue is, I didn't check the whole code yet but I was impressed that the example generating an editable code block was only 149 Lines long including html tags and comments.

#

The only issue is the visual alignment, as the LLM doesn't know how it looks like in different browsers.

livid plover
#

just tell it to fix that issue, vibe coding is ez ๐ŸŒŸ

paper saffron
#

Thanks for your opinions, I apreciate it ๐Ÿ‘

paper saffron
#

Btw. the first project will be a port from AJAX / SQL to C++ / Qt / SQL and hopefully MongoDB and I will have to learn Qt UI far bether than now, and I am setting the stakes high as I want to match the second as close as possible to get accurate I/O numbers for performance monitoring (SystemIO Loop CPU/RAM Reading is at 2ms, sometimes in the microsecond area).

The main reason I chose C++ was not it's beauty, more the laziness to not need to additionally manage memory. I am very sure that I will need time to learn Qt far better to sync it properly. But learning takes time...

neon spoke
# paper saffron Btw. the first project will be a port from AJAX / SQL to C++ / Qt / SQL and hope...

It does take time. That's part of it. And these LLMs can be useful in speeding up search and popping out simple functions, but they're statistical inference engines...meaning if there's a mistake most folks make, it's going to make them. And if it's something that nobody's done, it's very likely going to confidently get it very wrong.

They're useful tools for experienced engineers and a trap for new folks. Don't fall into the trap. Seems like folks don't learn as well when they do something new with an LLM kinda doing most of it for them, so use it as an occassional springboard and otherwise just Push Forward. Folks that know C/C++ are extremely valuable across the industry, so if you're enjoying it, don't let the LLM do it for you. You will do a better job, I promise you.

livid plover
#

or fine for quickly whipping up some throw-away tool, on the premise you can verify it's output/result suffciently

paper saffron
#

Well I use it as I learn visually and I am at the beginning of my journey, I had to adapt stuff as well and actually I am happy to get easy functions that I can read and understand.
To match the second with higher precision I would add another mathematical approach including averages of previous x executions to get as close as possible.
Using Qt I read something using signals and slots, that should be my next chapter ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

But I asked it for different stuff just to see how it looks like, as I wanted to see in what direction you need to move to get into SIMD on CUDA. And I may want to see how I can use other x86-amd64 instructions/logic.

neon spoke
paper saffron
#

I will, I take that as an orientation, as I saw that much stuff I compiled crashed or didn't meet the requirements.

neon spoke
#

As an aside, when things break in OBS, it's funny to ask ChatGPT or Gemini how to fix it. They come up with some wild stuff that does not fix it ๐Ÿคช but boy are they confident!

left mulch
#

chatGPT or gemini might not be great for answering user troubleshooting questions but they are very good when you give them access to the OBS repo and ask them to add/change features

tall vapor
#

best yer gonna get from those things is giving you a hint as for where in the actual documentation you should look

#

doesn't replace knowing what you're doing

paper saffron
#

Well I wouldn't be amused if OBS would be written by AI, I absolutely acknowledge that ๐Ÿ˜‚

full fern
tall vapor
#

it cannot learn, it's that simple

#

plus if it did accept user input like that the well would've been poisoned yesterday

paper saffron
#

Well the only thing I do is ask it for another way, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't

tall vapor
#

you still gotta actually understand what it spits out as to correct all the mistakes it will have made in it's implementation of what you're trying to do

neon spoke
#

It's as good as what it has to work with (train on) right? So, for JavaScript stuff it's kinda gnarly, but if you ask it how kmalloc works, you get some pretty good info out of it (because nobody that doesn't know what they're talking about talks about kmalloc on the web)

#

It did an okay job at explaining to me the basics of Xen hypervisor and QubesOS but it very quickly started making shit up, like it didn't read the docs ๐Ÿคช

tall vapor
#

kmalloc is one of those things that you don't need an LLM for in the first place, for as the documentation exists and everyone whom does something with it will just reference the documentation and off they go

neon spoke
#

(for now I guess )

tall vapor

Well to get stuff into the console like an uint64_t you have fun converting it into a QString

#

Sorry its not a console it's a QListView

neon spoke
# tall vapor and would've used 970M of ram for some reason

20 years ago I was working with legacy code at Big Company and had to merge to wildly divergent forks of an audio processing application...and one of the two had made a custom memory manager for caching large samples of consistent size. That makes sense until you see they made the galaxy brain decision to overload the new operator and thus transform how all allocation worked for the entire app. It caused some truly insane bugs with configuration loading and usage when someone naively mushed the code bases together and I got to fix that.

#

Looking back on it, it was fun to discover and remember fixing, but at the time I was pretty fussed

tall vapor
paper saffron
#

I dont know exactly thades, I have the distinct impression that I am handling the whole UI over as I didn't knew better, what is pretty dirty

neon spoke
tall vapor
paper saffron

but there is a prevention in place that prevents additional QListViews once it's in the writing function

neon spoke
tall vapor
#

and then after that the "Oh no...." counter keeps incrementing

livid plover
#

it's nice to have a coding puzzle like that every so often. went back and forth making small improvements to the program that ran on some old machine controller. add some ASCII graphics here, sanity check inputs there, dive deep in the manuals and find some badly documented feature that improves the workflow tons, etc.

neon spoke
neon spoke
paper saffron
#

but that part of the code is only executed once and is not inside of a loop, in the writing function the QList is searched, as I remember. Passing the whole UI might be the reason it crashes after some hours, due to a double reference taking place on the painting on the UI.

does anyone know what D3D9E stands for? Specifically the E? I google this all I can find are posts asking what it is but not any answers unless I'm missing them

#

A note on D3D9Ex is that RTSS and SK reports differently. RTSS only concerns itself with swapchain data if I remember it right, so it only reports a game as using D3D9Ex if it uses FlipEx (the new swap effect introduced in D3D9Ex). However SK reports games making use of other D3D9Ex related calls (ones that RTSS doesn't hook/care about) as using D3D9Ex even if the swap effect might not be FlipEx.

I found this excerpt but It seems like D3D9Ex is different to D3D9E

You really think so? I feel like the pattern is pretty clear: SaaS company sell, the buyers fire everyone, and either implode it or sell it for parts. Can take a couple years but I can't think of an example where this scenario leads to a stronger brand or platform, you know?

still turret
#

Sam Reich is pretty happy with the deal, and their platform is working very well for them, they don't need ads, the business model is exactly what they want, it's stable and reliable. Right now it's speculation who all was let go, there's reports it was "Everyone" and reports "a few teams"

#

There would have to be a pretty massive degredation of service, or breach of contract to make them want to move.

neon spoke
#

I know they like it there, but - yeah - I've only heard the more intense half of those reports. And I agree with your assessment

You could be right, of course

I doubt anyone would look at this and go "Yeah we're happy about this" but it's highly unlikely they are moving anywhere else because of layoffs.

rather than the more common 16 in consumer level

graceful scaffold
#

mine is probably going to be a combination of my dedicated gaming and streaming PC, combined with just my daily driver in general, lolz

graceful scaffold
#

basically hardware that's built to run like it's supposed to, and built to last a while

#

also built for bigger upgrades

#

lol

hearty stirrup
#

higher lane count means your video card will run at max speed with more "other" hardware installed

graceful scaffold
#

yeah

#

no slowdowns

#

gotcha

hearty stirrup
#

my video editing rig has 20 of the 40 lanes of it dedicated to m.2 nvme drives

graceful scaffold
#

interesting

hearty stirrup
#

total of 5 drives at pci-e 3.0 x4

graceful scaffold
#

also, stupid question, but with my computer, you wouldn't think there's an NVMe spot on it, would you?

#

lol

#

highly doubt it, but haven't opened it up again recently to check

hearty stirrup
#

3rd gen i7? not likely

graceful scaffold
#

recently been seeing a bunch of NVMe 4 terabyte SSDs in temu ads and stuff, lmao

hearty stirrup
#

I wouldn't expect it to have one before 6th gen

graceful scaffold
#

lmao

graceful scaffold
hearty stirrup
#

I'm running 4x2tb sata ssd in a pooled drive currently for my games drive

graceful scaffold
#

so 6th gen would be something like i7 6700 or something like that?

#

or 6200 or something

hearty stirrup
#

yep

graceful scaffold
#

?

graceful scaffold
# hearty stirrup yep

thanks, wanted to make sure I was remembering how that whole generation scheme worked

hearty stirrup
graceful scaffold
#

initially it was confusing, because generations weren't the same thing as the i3 i5 i7 sort of scheme

#

so I had to try to remember that one was different from the other, and that you couldn't really mix them, unless you specifically were naming what generation with which i level or whatever, lol

hearty stirrup
#

you can GENERALLY go within a single generation of cpu for upgrades (say from an i3 to i5 or MOST i7s of a generation)

graceful scaffold
# hearty stirrup

this reminds me of that one Linux application that you can use in order to basically combine multiple computers and pool your resources together, to have almost like a supercomputer of sorts, in a way

#

can't remember what the name of the program was, or the software or whatever, but yeah

#

Saw a dude use it to take like four different Google Chromebooks, and pool their resources together, just for the hell of it

hearty stirrup
#

well, on linux, you have tools that allow you to have such pooled drives that span across multiple computers

graceful scaffold
#

Saw it on YouTube

graceful scaffold
#

I was just saying what you sent, that image, reminded me of that, basically

hearty stirrup
#

glusterfs is one of them

graceful scaffold
#

kk

graceful scaffold
#

Don't know if I'm interpreting it correctly or not

hearty stirrup
#

going from an i5 4690k to an i7 4770k would work

graceful scaffold
#

That's quite interesting

hearty stirrup
#

without having to replace everything

graceful scaffold
#

neat, good to know, thanks

#

and an i7 would be way better than an I-5 in terms of like the type of CPU or whatever, right?

#

or am I wrong?

#

lol

#

I'm knowledgeable in some regards, but in others I'm a noob

hearty stirrup
#

assuming the same generation and market segment (desktop vs power saving laptop vs performance laptop) the i7 will generally better

graceful scaffold
#

gotcha

hearty stirrup
#

like a 4690k i5 will beat most mobile chips of the 4xxx generation that don't have HQ or MQ in their model numbers

graceful scaffold
#

stupid question, but what does the initial number that's always paired with the i, what does it actually stand for?

#

because I know it doesn't stand for how many cores it has

#

lol

hearty stirrup
#

the order is generation, tier, major model, market segment

#

generation, tier and major model are all numbers, tier is always a single digit, major model always 2

graceful scaffold
#

okay so it would be the tier

#

gotcha

hearty stirrup
#

market segment isn't always present but is always a letter or two when it's present

graceful scaffold
#

The k being the market segment?

hearty stirrup
#

K and X marget segments are always high performance

graceful scaffold
#

gotcha

#

this should have probably been in #tech-talk, but too late, lmao

hearty stirrup
#

the "U" market segment is low power consumption and generally also low performance

graceful scaffold
#

interesting, good to know

#

Don't get U shit, lol

hearty stirrup
#

they're basically only found in laptops and the ultra small formfactor machines

graceful scaffold
#

noted

silver fable
#

Don't forget the KS series. ๐Ÿ˜€

graceful scaffold
#

what's KS for?

#

is it better than K or X?

hearty stirrup
#

there's only a small number of "KS" market segment chips iirc

graceful scaffold
#

interesting

#

so rare

hearty stirrup
graceful scaffold
#

That's a lot of information

#

lmao

#

essentially almost 4 GHz?

hearty stirrup
#

yeah programs like cpu-z tend to do that

graceful scaffold
#

3.99 GHz pretty much?

#

isn't that like extremely fast compared to some other chips that people are still using today?

hearty stirrup
#

that can draw more power on its own than some peoples' entire computers do

graceful scaffold
#

aren't most of them still like 2.something?

hearty stirrup
#

core speed isn't everything when it comes to performance

#

and hasn't been for like 20 years

graceful scaffold
#

got it

graceful scaffold
#

is that CPU overclocked?

hearty stirrup
#

nope

graceful scaffold
#

only reason I ask is because for the specification it says 3.30 gigahertz, but for the core speed it says 3,991.21 megahertz, which is almost 691 roughly megahertz more, pretty much

#

or is core speed different than the amount listed in the specification?

silver fable
#

Here's me, for comparison.

#

Also getting up in the years.

hearty stirrup
#

my video editing rig also has a xeon E5-2680v4

graceful scaffold
#

interesting

#

bet you don't have anything that has a Pentium CPU though

#

lmao

#

I always hear people shitting on those all the time

hearty stirrup
#

nothing that's a daily driver

graceful scaffold
#

lol

I want to download VP9 stream because it has 2.5x the bitrate as the AV1

#

I would just watch on YT.. but YT removed the option to force VP9.. thanks, YT

#

yep, worked after updating

#

hard to say how much worse/better vp9 versus av1 is... some parts are def worse and some better

you would think VP9 would be vastly better with the 2.5x higher bitrate, but... ehh.. not so much

#

yep, no issues for me; I did have a weird issue with my onboard LAN with some Win 11 update, but that was fixed by updating the driver from the motherboard's website (the patchnotes in the driver zip did mention the issues I'd been seeing). It can't hurt to look into updating USB drivers or UEFI itself if USB is being weird

#

In general, some USB devices do poorly with Windows power saving modes, so changing both the global system setting for that (if you're on a desktop for instance) or USB sleep settings in Device Manager can help, but if we're talking about a laptop you in general want to be careful about doing that

#

(maybe I should add that it can hurt trying to update UEFI/BIOS if you don't know what you're doing and make a mistake, so do your homework before pulling that trigger โค๏ธ )

SteamOS is very very likely to remain on their dedicated hardware, so if you mean "You're going to buy a steam machine" that's fair enough. You can run it on arbitrary hardware, but at that point you may as well just install Arch or Cachy because that's what SteamOS is under the hood, and then you can deal with whatever hardware you have that Steam didn't account for.
