That helps me understand why I like matte screens, I think.

#

I really dislike glare (or the eye strain from it, really), and don't mind black levels rising in a bright room as a price to pay for it.

#

But it sounds like there are ways to get low direct reflections and keep contrast high in bright rooms, with some filter layers in the monitor, or something?

#

More random stuff for premium monitors to throw in and hope people are willing to pay for. Will probably become standard once manufacturers know what people prefer, if there's a consensus preference amongst consumers... I guess.

carmine ibex
#

yeah, the main black level raise from the S95D isn't the matte coating, it's the lack of a polarizer
and the G4 is glossy, but it has like 30 billion lenses inside the display, which I guess reflect light back onto the panel?

anyone know a good site to download android apks? nintendo decided to release their app in like a dozen countries only

full fern
vernal current
#

now i remember, its called apk mirror

vernal current
#

So you need to install an app to install an apk

#

Wat

livid plover
#

No?

sweet anchor
#

Probably will need to disable your phones protection against random .apk installs though.

#

Enabling dev mode and what not.

vernal current
#

its a new change apparently

livid plover
#

Samsung or some wacko manufacturer then?

vernal current
#

has nothing to do with hardware

#

its from google

livid plover
#

Or did you end up on f-droid, cuz no on a normal android build you can literally just install an apk

prisma dove
#

been there for years, I remember having to enable side-loading all the way back in Cupcake

sweet anchor
#

Never had issues installing apks on android

livid plover
#

I set up a tablet 2 months ago with nothing to do but approve the .apk for installation...

vernal current
vernal current
#

before you could simply do it in 2 steps

livid plover
#

Oh you just clicked wrong thwn

sweet anchor
#

I literally just downloaded a youtube like a week ago, on two phones. No problem.

vernal current
sweet anchor
#

from apk mirror.

prisma dove
vernal current
#

by the site itself?

sweet anchor
#

I literally revanced my phone last week with a custom apk from apkmirror Kekw

#

So, say what you want.

livid plover
#

You clicked the wrong download button to get their download handler instead of the apk

vernal current
#

guys it wouldnt let me install the apk until i installed their app

sweet anchor
#

The site has a bunch of random nonsense buttons for "downloading".

prisma dove
#

"ads"

sweet anchor
#

Yep and now you lost your password. /s

prisma dove
#

poof!

livid plover
#

There ya go

vernal current
#

yes that

prisma dove
#

Don't need it if you download from the browser on the pc

tall vapor
#

revanced is best acquired by grabbint the stock youtube app, the revanced manager from their github and let's go

vernal current
#

i wasnt using pc

sweet anchor
vernal current
#

i downloaded directly on my phone to install it and then found out i had to install their app to install the apk

tall vapor
prisma dove
#

looks like that "bundle" setup is the issues.

livid plover
#

Apparently some apps only comes as bundles now, so eh

#

I.e. it's not an apk anymore

prisma dove
#

yeah, too bad

tall vapor
#

yeah that way your device only needs to grab the size that it needs rather than everything

sweet anchor
#

From my phone, no installer.

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

vernal current
tall vapor
#

so for me for example the twitch app download from playstore would be the base twitch app, english language pack and dpi size resources for my phone

tall vapor
livid plover
#

Semi google, semi not really. But also it isn't an apk anymore thus the confusion, cuz .apk's still install fine out the box

tall vapor
#

well no split apks are fully google

#

they just get downloaded&merged by the playstore app before gettin sent off to the android package installer

#

and what things like the apkmirror installer do is to replicate that part of functionality that the playstore app would take care of if ya were to install an app that is a bundle from the playstore directly, cause yeah when you just download it from a site it obv doesn't go through the playstore at all

vernal current
#

im not making this stuff up

tall vapor
#

file extensions don't matter

#

only os silly enough to care abt file extensions is windows

sweet anchor
#

Don't need no third party anything.

prisma dove
#

TL;DR
You need to download ".apk" files to install without needing another app.
The APK Mirror app is basically Google Play store, but for installing "bundles" from APK Mirror.

vernal current
#

look i downloaded the file and it didnt let me install until i installed their own app and then i could install the file i downloaded

sweet anchor
livid plover
tall vapor
#

yeah like I explained it quite nicely I think 😅

sweet anchor
#

But just a regular .apk file from .apkmirror installs just fine.

tall vapor
#

yup, if regular apk is available grab that, if not grab bundle&merge yourself (which is what the apkmirror installer does, among many other tools like bundletool as is provided by google themselves, or antisplitm etc)

prisma dove
#

Yep
You want to install an apk, download an apk.
You want to drink a beer, buy a beer. Not some White Claw beverage.

tall vapor
#

whole point behind this is to make app downloads&install sizes smaller

#

sweet anchor
vernal current

i dont know what you mean by that

who would buy a console that drops all it's games on PC too

that'd just be silly

the xbox is 5 years old, the ps5 is also 5 yrs old.

livid plover

tall vapor

meanwhile the ps5 is bought by folk that got a pc as well cause exclusives, same with switch

the xbox? nope

I love the handheld formfactor, I thank nintendo for gettin it started again with the switch...

vernal current

there are a ton of other games to have fun with

vernal current

you basically get a switch if you like nintendo games...which seems like you guys dont

I appreciate the switch for getting valve to build the deck lel

sweet anchor

I do like nintendo games. I just dont like unoptimized rushed pieces of poop.

livid plover

i like the idea of the switch, but ergonomics seem rough to me, and when i don't really have a commute or downtime away from home the amount of time i'd play it just swindles to nothing

but what do I know, apparently

vernal current

even the og battery in me GBA SP still works

tall vapor
# sweet anchor Those practices haven't changed.

Yes correct, so if anythin we should focus our efforts on things goin on today cause I don't think that investin all our collective power that we got as the global population into making sure that lightbulbs last longer when nobody even buys classic lightbulbs anymore is a good way to go about it

#

nowadays there is an example in the lighting industry still that needs to be challenged yes

sweet anchor
tall vapor
sweet anchor
#

Was simply a reference to shady practices by capitalism. As in, this is history we have proof of. When a conspiracy theory gets proven to not be conspiracy.

tall vapor
#

yup

#

it's a good reference

#

just no forget to talk abt current issues too 😅

tall vapor
#

cause we all know the tech can do it just fine if properly implemented

#

they can easily last 15

#

at least

#

:p

#

again, if properly implemented

livid plover
#

yeah all that "LED lifetime 20,000 hours" and it's the driver shitting the bed at day 3

tall vapor
#

and 10 years of mandatory warranty is a perfect option here tbh

#

that would assume (way over) 8 hours of daily runtime of a bulb that is quoted to last 20k hours

#

with 20k hours being a rather low quote

#

Love the "mandatory x years warranty to make manufacturers that produce trash bleed money" idea as a whole

#

you make something that based on what it be and what we know should survive 5 years of regular use no problem and it breaks after 2? Well that's your problem now!

livid plover
#

i found a loophole at one point for free LED lights, order them as warm white, seller shipped cold white, complain to store, get to keep them and they'd ship another one, which was also cold white kek

sweet anchor
#

Infinite leds

livid plover
#

now i just need to find a loophole for free storage DespairCat

sweet anchor
#

This one trick stores dont want you to know about

tall vapor
#

other than by literally making them bleed money whenever they produce ewaste straight as it comes from the factory

#

also like when an led bulb that is quoted as 20k hours breaks after a year that /SHOULD/ be the easiest refund ever, but it just isn't. And that's a problem. You said it lasts 20k hours, it literally /CAN'T/ have been lit for even half that since the date of purchase. So it should be product doesn't deliver on it's expected functionality, your company produced ewaste, here's my money back to me pockets

#

I know that this whole thing wouldn't work cause then companies would just start marketing them bulbs as havin 100 hours of runtime

#

hence the idea with "we know that such things should last 15 years easy, soo mandatory 10 years warranty to stop them from making crap it is"

livid plover
#

the key word here is "up to"

tall vapor
#

that's exactly the thing

livid plover
#

which is already what they do i'm pretty sure

tall vapor
#

there is no minimum standard

#

there should be a minimum standard, and if your company makes crap that doesn't even manage that you should bleed money by the way of mandatory refunds

#

simple as that.

#

just like as if you are a company that sells bottles of rum where each one is labelled as 750ml, but they only contain 200ml

#

shouldn't be treated any differently

there's been a whole mess with this in street lighting. the warmer white LEDs used to be noticeably less efficient so weren't produced in the same quantities as the cold white ones. then everyone realized the warm white LEDs are just better for street lighting for a multitude of reasons, the phosphor coatings got better and their efficiency improved, so there was an excess of cool white street lighting LEDs that companies wanted to dump stock of

#

so now we have garbage street lights because they were cheaper

Shortest answer: no
next shortest answer: we don't want them to, as that waste's development time to maintain a version of obs that works on substandard hardware. That has to be evaluated all the time.
Would you ask a game developer to make their AAA game run on substandard hardware?

#

png vs. webp won't make a lick of difference after the files are loaded, because either way the uncompressed images are loaded into VRAM and take exactly the same VRAM + processing power

copper notch
#

Reminds me of years ago pointing out how some web pages have far too many images on them that waste way too many resources, such as huge background images. Pointed out one website and someone responded that their image was only a 40kB jpeg.

#

I had to give the same lesson to them, that compression of file formats is to preserve the amount of disk space they take up, and the amount of network bandwidth that it takes to transfer them over the network, which can also have an effect on how fast a web page loads. So for example, using JPG instead of PNG will make a web page load faster. But it does not make the images take up less system RAM or VRAM once decompressed.

#

So some websites use hundreds of megabytes of RAM/VRAM for all their images and rich media, but people don't see that because they only look at highly compressed on disk file sizes.

And why cant obs studio rely on my physical gpu memory and split the load in each memory rather to be on rely on dedicated vram

I wanted a mechanical gaming keyboard for many years in order to have anti-ghosting and just have a good keyboard for once instead of the typical dentist office type keyboard crap I've used for 30+ years, but the problem I have, is that I am like the only person on Earth apparently that does not want to hear CLICK CLICK CLICKETY CLICK LISTEN TO ME I AM TYPING EVERYBODY CLICK CLICKKKK CLICKKK when I type. Did reseearch in the past on various different key switch types from different companies, watched videos demonstrating them and never found something I felt confident enough about for the high price many keyboards are. So I avoided them for a long time and stuck with the dentist office crap....

#

until a few months ago. I finally found one that I was convinced would be quiet due to a lot of reviews and good mic tests of various keyboards. Decided to spring for it finally, and bought a Steel Series Apex Pro gen 3, and it is the quietest keyboard I've ever used other than membrane keyboards on laptops. Best keyboard I've ever used, it's great, although it did put a dent in the wallet.

Then a year later he complained that he wished he got the one with the numeric keypad.

modern yoke
# modern yoke holy shit java is fast

at least in comparison to python. I'm redoing a project I did less than half a year ago in python, but this time in java to get more used to the language. I've not yet written it very optimal or in a state that's close to being finished, but it handles extreme amounts of computation and data much better than python.

#

Something that took like 10 minutes and 20gb to compute in python can be done in a few seconds with just 4gb in java

#

My impression was always that java was old and slow.

karmic tiger
tall vapor
#

the programmin language is hardly ever responsible for a program being bad

karmic tiger
#

my bad too easy

#

but yee, p sure python can outpace java when it's stuff it's tasked for, and using the relevant libs

modern yoke
#

trust me, python is definetely doing a lot of hand-holding and similar stuff that probably causes a lot of overhead, compared to java. One is also interpreted on the fly (python) vs being compiled beforehand with very specific syntax(java)

karmic tiger
#

like typically, if you're using the "native" arrays in python, i.e. lists of lists, yeah it'll be shit

tall vapor
#

yeah like there's a reason as for why things like numpy exist

modern yoke
#

python wins 100% in easy of use and quickly getting something done. Just opening a blank file and writing and running it is so easy and nice.

tall vapor
#

python plus some native compiled libs for when things actually matter in terms of compute perf is a sweet combo

karmic tiger
#

yeah no shit you're slow as fuck

#

get into numpy

#

or pandas, or whatev is fit to your purpose

tall vapor
#

likely what you're doing in java already got highly optimised codepaths that you just call via a function yus, on python ya often times gotta bring those yourself

#

which is exactly where numpy, pandas and such come in

karmic tiger
#

but to come back to java :
it's in a bad moddle ground, imo, where it doesn't have the flexibility of things like python, but doesn't have the raw power of more low-level dedicated languages

modern yoke
#

vscode died :(

karmic tiger
#

like, you want to optimise heavy computations of array stuff?
learn fortran, learn openmp/mpi, and watch every core of your cpu do the most efficient shit anybody thought of since 1970.

Want a language that doesn't punch you in the nuts everytime you miscalculated your array indices? Should probs use python

tall vapor
#

YEAH there's reasons as for why ye scientific stuffs often times still runs on fortran stuffs

#

sure there's the technical debt factor to it

#

but also

karmic tiger
#

fortran is a fkin beast

tall vapor
#

it got the facilities for distributed compute like nothin else

modern yoke
#

Actually I'd be very interested in learning all that. But my project has a huge bottleneck that I have yet to solve. Basically in the beginning there's a huge and slow O(2^n) task. Other than that i think I could gain a lot of speed by doing things in parralel too. No idea if any of this can be done on a gpu, but if possible I suspect if would be super fast

modern yoke
livid plover
#

Maybe don't print 16 millions arrays then-

tall vapor

lemme guess

karmic tiger
# tall vapor sure there's the technical debt factor to it

but also in sci stuff it's not just debt
like a bit of code from the 80's can genuinely be important to modern stuff.
and with fortran's accent on backwards compatibility, I know I can take it and compile it on the modern compilers I have without havi g to worry about adapting shit

modern yoke

have you checked if you can't get more ram?

livid plover

The workshop CAD pc does okay at 8, with cad being 2-3gb heavy commonly. But you defo need some ssd swap for off-hand memory

tall vapor
#

ya technical debt too neg of a term to describe it as a whole, but of course it plays a role would be ridiculous if it didn't after all them DECADES

modern yoke
#

thers 4gb soldered on and a 4gb stick. I could probably easy upgrade that 4gb to 8gb and get 12gb in total for cheap. Or would mismatching be a problem?

tall vapor
#

well it would downgrade you to single channel speeds

modern yoke
#

I've got 2400MT/s, would that effectively half it?

#

the speed reported in windows task manager

tall vapor
#

no

#

2400MT/s is 2400MT/s

#

it does matter however whether your memory modules operate at "RAID0" speeds as a combined pool (think that describes it well) or as just JBOD

#

in terms of speeds that is

#

as in actual data rate&bandwith that you get out of it

#

so yes, bandwidth would effectively be halved

#

so like ya

#

it'd work

#

but you'd notice a not exactly insignificant slowdown when it comes to things where bandwith matters

#

esp when like usin the igpu, for example

#

that's one of the most obvious things where ya can tell

modern yoke
#

oh no, let me guess it uses the main memory?

tall vapor
#

igpu does indeed use sysmem, yup

modern yoke
#

Wow, I feel pretty stupid now. so that's why task manager reports gpu memory as 4gb. I was confused about this because I read somewhere that my igpu had either 128 or 256MB dedicated. Which I'm guessing it still has and uses in addition to system memory.

#

This means I have even less memory available in total. Yay!

tall vapor
#

no the "128MB" or "256MB" and such is a uefi setting as for how much you wanna have dedicated to the igpu no matter what

#

still comes from sysmem

Thanks, and yeah, this is not at all normal or even semi normal for up here. Last time ive ever seen it this bad was 30 years ago.

We’ve had way more snow than this and/or much colder weather, but this type of ice storm is such a rarity of rarities

100MHz base clock, thats cool

#

I wonder if it’ll ever drop down to that clock speed

modern yoke
#

it only supports single channel memory, and has only the same number of cores and threads. for as long as I remember, it's pretty common to see 2x the amount of threads as cores. Are these more recent trends?

proper valve
#

i bet those are all e-cores

modern yoke
tall vapor

An actual 8 core wouldn’t be that inexpensive

so it only consists of efficiency cores? no "regular" ones?

Yes

yup

It’s an N series so im not surprised

tall vapor

this is a modern 8 core atom, basically

Nice

modern yoke

weird. How the hell did they do that. But yeah then it does probably go down to 100mhz

I need to use one eventually

they just got rid of the atom name due to it's reputation

About time

those things were awful

Where are atoms among the other lower end intel cpus like celeron and pentium? If they still exist. If not, just imagine they do

Celeron is something now

I don't understand intels newer naming schemes at all.

Oof, I wouldn't want a laptop with this cpu even though it's new.
