I like using the film sims. For photos I shoot RAW+JPEG on all three. Hardly every touch the RAW version in editing unless it's important and for printing. WIth Video I shoot Log and film sim.

More GPU launch posting: I guess the reason I was wrong predicting perf/watt being worse on Blackwell than Ada is... they pretty much didn't increase performance very much, other than the 5090. So rather than "juicing similar silicon for more perf", they are selling similar generation silicon at only slightly higher specs, perf, and power draw, and lowering MSRP a tad. Probably will sell for higher than MSRP, so meh. If price/perf ends up similar or worse (market is pretty good at ensuring this for new cards), then this just adds new SKUs but doesn't change much (if anything) for value.

Normally flow control on the internet works by the endpoints sending data faster and faster until it starts losing packets and then backing off, which has multiple negative effects, including buffers getting stupidly overfull (google on "bufferbloat"). What they're doing is basically implementing a form of ECN ("explicit congestion notification") where the network can tell things to start backing off before things get saturated. Plus some other things, I think, not sure, didn't get long to read.

SQM is a particular flavor of that which you can run yourself on some routers which does pretty much that, and does a killer job of making it so that someone sucking down a game on steam or such doesn't completely trash your connection.

I'm doing my best to read and summarize a bit of this L4S thing (that linked RFC):

• New, separated "data flow" ("new pipe") for L4S traffic. (Flows are managed in network appliances such as routers, I guess)
  • Traffic participating in (opting into) the L4S scheme gets the new flow ("new pipe"??), old classic congestion control (such as Reno TCP congestion-controlled stuff) uses the rest of the flow through the network (the "old pipe"/traditional part of the network, I guess).
  • "Pipes" is a loose analogy since they are not meant to be two fixed-bandwidth flows, rather, the flows should be managed with dynamically sized bandwidths... point being, the two flows are separated, so that "well-behaving" L4S traffic doesn't have to queue behind Reno/traditional congestion control-managed traffic or whatever.
  • "New pipe" is for traffic using congestion control algorithms that are more proactive about signaling and recovering from queuing to minimize it, and reduce the harms queuing brings (esp. high latency).

Explicit congestion control info is sent regularly/frequently by network appliances, which tells apps (the traffic senders) when there is congestion, without waiting for packet loss/whatever classic metric. L4S flow should behave itself pretty well and respond well to conditions; separate, more-chaotic classic congestion control traffic can do its thing "over there". There are some "smart algorithm something something"s offered in the RFC, for a network appliance to know how to fairly divvy up the bandwidth between the two flows ("pipes").
