terse helm
#

I'm like 90% sure I had this one at some point

opaque halo
#

it's possible.... unfortunately, once that tape gets "folded" it's nearly impossible to fix it

terse helm
#

note the important feature

civic quarry
#

yeah i'm gonna toss the ones that did, one i was able to save but that's about it

#

these tapes aren't really worth anything so no huge loss, the only tape i worry about is my miku tape which is worth like 50 dollars but i've only played that 3 times since i have a digital copy too

opaque halo
civic quarry
#

i suppose worst case i could just run a sacrificial one through before something i care about, though i doubt anything's wrong with my tape player considering other tapes go through it butter smooth

opaque halo
#

just don't over tension 'em or your gonna snap it

civic quarry
#

i don't see how i could anyways lel

#

hmm, maybe these tapes really are doing this because of cigarette smoke, just tried wiping the roller off and got some yellow gunk off of it

#

i just cleaned it the day before too

#

the cases of these tapes are horribly coated with the stuff, and that's what led to her downfall too

opaque halo
#

yeah... clean the heads on the player with IPA and be sure to let it dry

civic quarry
#

if only i had isopropyl

#

would windex do the job?

terse helm
#

just get some isopropyl?

civic quarry
#

no money

terse helm
#

I use that all the time for cleaning shit

#

a bottle is like two bucks

civic quarry
#

i can't get to town anyways

opaque halo
#

not windex... that's ammonia based

civic quarry
#

demineralized dihydrogen monoxide

#

unironically have washed certain electronics off in the sink before, my keyboard was one of 2 suspects

#

accidentally spilled a bunch of soda on it and it got in the keyswitches, just soaked it in the sink, dried it out and it was fine

#

but nah, wouldn't subject the tape player to that lmao

opaque halo
#

I've tossed more than one keyboard in the dishwasher (no soap) ๐Ÿ™‚

civic quarry
#

most people think the second electronics come into contact with water that its junk, simply not the case

#

as long as it isn't powered you're fine

#

just dry it out before hand

opaque halo
#

Yup

civic quarry
#

i wasn't gonna wait weeks so i put it in front of the heater for about 45 mins after banging out most of the water

terse helm
#

there is the issue of mineral deposits after water evaporates

#

and of water remaining under certain parts like BGA chips

civic quarry
#

very much well known in my house, we have bad hard water

#

we have a water softener but same story, we don't have the money to keep that thing full

terse helm
#

isn't the thing you put in that just salt?

civic quarry
#

yeah and its kinda expensive

#

its some special salt, not sure what exactly it is

terse helm
#

I wonder if it's the same as what goes into dishwashers for them to soften water

civic quarry
#

idk, never had a dishwasher

terse helm
#

unfortunately the box of that that I have here doesn't state exactly what it is

civic quarry
terse helm
#

hm

#

apparently it's just 99.9% NaCl and the remaining 0.01% is water to keep it together

#

ah and the reason you need to get special salt for water softeners isn't the chemical properties (being that it's the same as regular uniodized table salt) but that it comes in larger granules (rather than crystals) that don't clog the machine

civic quarry
#

yeah they're pretty large, each grain is about the size of my thumb roughly

#

microwatts per square centimeter, can't say i've seen that unit of measurement before

It's like they put 2 tablespoons of sorbitol in each meal they eat or something.

intel has just a single product release

and nvidia just started to eat away with that hard with that super computer

and giving that the intel "fix" for arrow lake

#

i have little hope that intel can do anything with this desktop socket

#

GoodNight if this is 2025 intel i dont got much hope

copper notch
#

Yeah, I don't see Intel getting anywhere with Panther Lake

#

And with Rumours AMD's Zen 6 will use 12 core chiplets, suggesting a core bump up to 24 cores on consumer, I fail to see how Intel can catch up at this point when they can't even get more than 8 proper cores in a CPU now.

#

Maybe they'll get lucky and a bunch of people wont read any reviews or watch any tech videos or have friends or family that know anything about CPUs and there will be a big storm of uninformed buyers flock to Intel in the next few gens! ๐Ÿ™‚

livid plover

sudden adder
#

From some of the word i heard coming out of CES, they are waiting until closer to the 5070 launch. This came from Arthur Gies of Wirecutter, and is on record as saying this was directly from AMD

copper notch
#

Hard to say. There is a lot of speculation out there of the "This is what we think AMD did" that makes the rounds and turns into "this is why AMD did X, Y, Z" with zero evidence too.

#

I do think it was lame of AMD to not announce RDNA4 at CES, but nobody truly knows why they didn't, other than their official story. More might come out in the future though. But based on the latest leaks, RDNA4 looks strong if they're true, so it doesn't appear that AMD missed the mark... but time will tell.

wheat karma
copper notch
#

Problem is, Intel's manufacturing costs are higher so they have lower margins, plus Gelsinger pissed off TSMC and they cancelled their special 40% discount for Intel so now Intel's margins are even lower. They're barely selling any chips and probably with razor thin margins, so unlikely they'll lower prices much.

Never noticed any lag here. On mobile, linux or windows clients

As far as i am aware, the number of people online shouldnt effect anything if they are not actually actively doing things. And since Discord is a silo, rather than actual individual servers that people run, there are technically FAR more people online on Discord overall than just here

there are plenty of people that already multistream with the many available plugins, who also dont need to use a paid RTMP server, and are doing fine.

there wouldnt really be much difference between the plugins and an official implementation. It would more than likely have the same methods and such under the hood

when it is just the game, but not when it is trying to do more than just the game. And OBS is doing more than that. it needs GPU to composite your scenes/sources, and it needs GPU or CPU to encode the video. The more encodes, the more GPU is needed

I'm a bit suspicious of that "research project" demo ("FSR 4 but don't call it that"??). It just looked un-artifacted to me. I didn't think we were there yet even with DLSS3, it'd be a little too impressive to "start using AI" and just leapfrog DLSS like that, right? Even the DLSS4 demo wasn't literally flawless. Eh, maybe it's just "upscaling to 4K looks good" doing the heavy lifting, IDK.

marsh helm
#

and amd has been talking about it for over a year

#

they just copied what nvidia was doing

drowsy mason
#

Are you saying Nvidia's "supercomputer running for 6 years straight to improve DLSS" line isn't the real reason their upscaler is pretty good??

copper notch
#

Well, what I find interesting is that while AMD's FSR is inferior to DLSS and acknowledged as such, and shows as such in objective comparison videos... AMD's FSR 3.1 which has no machine learning at all, is considered now to be on par with NVIDIA's DLSS 2.3 o thereabouts which does use machine learning. Basically, it shows that AMD was able to produce comparable results to NVIDIA's AI Supercomputer motherbrain deep learning AI mumbo jumbo hotsauce, without using any AI at all, they just came to the party one year late. Had they started working on FSR a year or two earlier, they would have endeed up with a solution that was comparable to NVIDIA's DLSS in almost every way, but which ran on all video hardware and did not require machine learning.

#

Personally, I find that quite the feat, but because they were a year+ late, in practical terms it is not commonly recognized for what they were able to accomplish with FSR.

#

I see no reason to believe that AMD's FSR4 using machine learning can't accomplish as good or better results than NVIDIA, however they'll have to prove it first, and since NVIDIA's been doing this longer now, they certainly have the upper hand to try to stay just one step ahead of AMD. Time will tell though.

#

It's more about corporate priorities than technical acumen IMHO.

#

Their framegen tech came out over a year after NVIDIAs, and their initial beta release was somewhat of a faceplant, but once they got the proper release out, it was reviewed by many to say that it was better than NVIDIA's framegen, and some wanted to use NVIDIA DLSS upscaling with AMD framegen, but it wasn't possible until AMD updated FSR a few more times to allow their framegen to be used separately from their upscaler to allow mix and match. Dunno what current sentiments are between the 2 companies' implementations, nor how DLSS 4 changes that.

#

I do imagine that these technologies are maturing towards parity with each other rapidly though.

#

Which is ultimately great for consumers.

drowsy mason
#

Yeah, I have been skeptical of upscaling partly because of the vendor lock in and hardware upsell aspect, but if it comes to all hardware and works well I will relax a bit about it, honestly.

#

Though I can be particular about like upscaling and AA, so I tend not to prefer it when I do try it, but it's more options at that point. If it's not exclusive or used as too much of a crutch then it doesn't bother me too too much.

copper notch
#

I think ideally, everyone would prefer to have native rendering at any given framerate than to use upscaling, but the upscaling technologies do have merit for providing a solution that fits in a sliding scale between two extremes, so they can be quite useful.

#

If it wasn't for AMD's FSR, I'd have not been able to play Cyberpunk 2077 for like 2 years, as well as some other games, but FSR allowed me to use lower res and upscale to get barely playable game. ๐Ÿ™‚

drowsy mason
#

There's some demos I've tried where it makes more sense to upscale, yeah. None of my actual library quite yet, but I can understand what makes it useful.

copper notch
#

And in some games, the DLSS upscaled version can look better in some ways than native, which I was ultra skeptical about until Hardware Unboxed did a video demonstrating it in Death Stranding and some other games.

#

There's an ever increasing chance though that within 10 years, games wont even use conventional rendering technologies, and everything will be generated with neural rendering or whatever the buzzword of the day is.

#

Looks like games are already firmly moving into the territory of requiring DLSS and other fake-frame etc. tech even on highest end GPUs due to falling somewhere on the spectrum between pushing the tech hard to do more cutting edge things, and lack of optimization and letting the hardware make up for it.

compact lark
#

I tried ai frame interpolation of 60 to 240 fps content, atm there's constant dis-occlusion artifacts around moving objects, like a bad cut/paste in photoshop.. maybe people don't notice because FXAA was already doing that around player characters

copper notch
#

I'm a 60Hz display gamer, so all the framegen tech is a big fat nothingburger for me, as you need to get 80fps to begin with for it to look half decent. The only way it could be useful to me is if it could increase frame rate from 15+fps to up over 60, but the tech can't do that without looking horrendous, so it is not useful to me. I've got 120Hz on my laptop, but would need to get 80fps+ without framegen and then use AMD's framegen on NVIDIA to benefit from it on the laptop too. Not sure I own any games where these conditions would align and produce a useful result for me. ๐Ÿ™‚

I use Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM for wildlife. I got mine used (300-350 USD, its a fairly old lens). It has a lot of flaws, and not great light transmission, but it was the cheapest and best way I could get to the 400mm range. This is on an old canon DSLR.

As far as I know and have seen, you are just out of luck for Sony. There is no option in my budget range. That is the primary reason why I went with older gear, the used market is fantastic, and my old as camera is perfectly fine, it mostly comes down to the glass I feel.

I don't think I would lay money down in a bet that AMD is going to leapfrog NVIDIA. It's one of those "prove it by doing it" situations IMHO. They have a long way to go, and NVIDIA is like 20x the size, so odds are not in AMD's favour on this one IMHO. However, it looks like AMD is trying to make this launch happen in their favour, by delaying the release both to get FSR4 more right at launch, and to know what NVIDIA's pricing will be before launching.

amber sparrow
#

Fsr4 might be part of it, but I'm really betting the biggest part of delay is pricing and how much stock nvidia actually gets out there

#

No sense in wasting all your gas to get to the start line, only to stall out because you didn't have anything in the tank to actually start the race. Not that I think it's gonna be much of a race if amd doesn't price aggressively

copper notch
#

Yeah, rumours are NVIDIA supply will be low, but we'll see. So far the 5090 looks a little disappointing in terms of performance and price:performance. I think it's mostly going to just be a win for AI enthusiasts due to 32GB and 2.5x AI acceleration uplift.

amber sparrow
#

Well, once they solved the vram leak issue

copper notch
# terse helm no gamer needs 32GB of vram, that's clearly an AI bros thing

Absolutely true however... by using 32GB of VRAM it increases the memory bus bandwidth to 512-bit which in turn gives a performance gain to video games due to the bus width rather than the amount of VRAM. IOW, if it only had 24GB, all other things being the same, the card would be even slower for gaming.

terse helm
#

-# DLSS will fix it

#

couldn't they halve it exactly at the same speed by using the same amount, but half-capacity memory chips?

umbral cove
#

I feel like thats a spot that heatsup greatly

tall vapor
terse helm

which would not be a great option for 24GB but becomes a possibility at 32?

umbral cove
amber sparrow

umbral cove
tall vapor
umbral cove
#

It sits in the slot bellow the KC3000... Urs also?

copper notch
# terse helm couldn't they halve it exactly at the same speed by using the same amount, but h...

Which would either double the amount of space taken up by memory chips, increasing the size of the circuit board and making cooling more complex, or using clamshell and making it even more complex to cool, and probably making the cards more expensive to manufacture and being wider than 2-slot. So yeah, they could do that but I'm not sure why they would want to do that or what benefit it would give consumers or NVIDIA. It would be a pretty much universally bad decision IMHO.

terse helm
#

huh?

#

it is my understanding, perhaps incorrectly, that the number of chips determines(/dictates) the memory bus width, so if they have let's say 16 2GiB chips now, just put 16 1GiB chips instead

amber sparrow
#

Heh. My drives aren't going over 51c while running crystaldiskmark

#

Granted it's currently 20c in my office

umbral cove
copper notch
terse helm
#

why are we doing 2x the number of chips?

umbral cove
#

Ive also read somewhere that bellow 40C is bad for the drive when writting ๐Ÿ‘€ maybe somethin from the past, who knows

copper notch
#

The reason they use larger capacity chips and less of them is that the overall solution becomes less expensive and is easier to cool. The cooling solutions are super expensive part of the design of the hardware, so making it easier to cool makes the cooling solution cheaper too.

copper notch
terse helm
#

ok but

#

the point was reducing the amount of memory

copper notch
#

If you use half capacity chips and same number of chips then you get a 16GB 5090 instead of a 32GB one.

terse helm
#

while retaining access speed

#

exactly

#

that was the idea

#

make that, make it cheaper, sell it to gamers

copper notch
#

I don't think a 16GB 5090 would be received well when the previous 2 generations of 90 class GPUs had 24GB

#

it would be DOA

terse helm
#

only if they didn't price it accordingly

copper notch
#

However... when those 1.5x capacity chips come out, they might be able to make versions with better all around configurations.

amber sparrow
#

40c is nowhere near too low

terse helm
#

there are lots of people who want more mathing capacity but for whom 32 (and even 24) GB of VRAM is unnecessary

umbral cove
terse helm
#

which I know as a 3090 owner

#

because I am one of them

copper notch
# terse helm only if they didn't price it accordingly

Sure, but the 5090 is the flagship GPU. On stage Jensen said that they are made for people building $10000 computers. They not trying to target gamers that want a budget 5090, they are explicitly targeting rich people.

amber sparrow
#

5090 Jr edition

terse helm
#

copper notch
#

People who want a 16GB 5090 and think that makes sense, are not the target customer of NVIDIA

terse helm
#

at this point gamers aren't the target customer of nvidia anyway

#

but we exist and we want gpus

amber sparrow
#

Buy amd

copper notch
#

That's certainly true too. ๐Ÿ™‚

terse helm
#

love me an AMD cpu

#

imo if they do something like that

#

they can price the 32GB 5090 even higher

copper notch
#

AMD is being criticized for not having RDNA4 in CES presentation and for being noticeably quiet about the details... but I'm starting now to think more and more that AMD is being very smart and strategic by holding back RDNA4 details and waiting for NVIDIA to release and get reviewed. Now that 5090 is out and reviewed, AMD can easily back-estimate the 5080, 5070Ti etc. and get ballparks for their performance and price:performance, and compare with RDNA4 and set their pricing. But they need to see the DLSS 4 side of things and gauge it first. They'll probably have to set their prices lower than they intended, but can now do so without undercutting themselves too.

#

I was interested potentially in a 5090 because in fantasy land who wouldn't be... but now that the numbers are out it looks pretty disappointing in price:value IMHO.

amber sparrow
#

If they were smart, they'd price 9070xt at 450usd and 9070 non xt at 399

copper notch
#

A pair of 4070TI Supers or a 5070Ti would cost far less than a 5090 and allow 32GB of VRAM for AI. The performance would be lower, but for inferencing you just need "fast enough", and it is the VRAM that is important to be able to run larger models without a huge performance degrade spilling over into CPU+RAM.

copper notch
#

If it was being used ONLY for gaming, I'd totally consider a 9070XT as the gaming value is probably going to be pretty high in comparision. Sadly, AMD's ROCm software is still lacklustre compared to CUDA, and updates break it often, and it has less application support and is a second class citizen often not even being supported by default and requiring an extra download, then hoping it works. So I'm not comfortable enough with AMD yet on the AI front. They need more time in the oven on that.

#

Most gamers and consumers don't give a rats ass about AI or are even opposed to AI, so that wont matter at all for most people though.

#

AMD is polling the AI community right now to find out what hardware people want to see them add AI support to next at least so they seem to be trying to up their game, just kind of slowly.

#

96GB GPU.... geeze

marsh helm
open rune
copper notch
# marsh helm If they can get to more than 75 games I would be impressed

If they can get it in Cyberpunk 2077, I'll be mega impressed. Patch 2.21 just came out with DLSS 4 support today, but I doubt they will release a 2.22 with FSR4 since the FSR support has lagged far behind historically. I will be surprised if AMD gets any significant number of existing games updated with FSR4, but we'll see. Especially unlikely in games that are no longer receiving periodic support updates.

#

It's probably going to come down to AMD paying the game developers to do it IMHO.

#

And since FSR4 at launch sounds like it will be RDNA4-only, it's only going to affect new card sales not benefit existing gamers, so will be somewhat of a nothingburger. They've hinted that they may add support for RDNA3 in the future but until they actually do it...

#

NVIDIA's also hinted at DLSS4 framegen considerations for 4000 series
