```To address the complexities of generating multiple frames, Blackwell uses hardware Flip Metering, which shifts the frame pacing logic to the display engine, enabling the GPU to more precisely manage display timing. The Blackwell display engine has also been enhanced with twice the pixel processing capability to support higher resolutions and refresh rates for hardware Flip Metering with DLSS 4.````
what does this mean?
sudden adder
#
Bigger numbers do better ™️
from what i have found via google searches, Flip Metering is a way to reduce frame stuttering, but potentially raises input lag. And has apparently existed for awhile
The last sentence is fairly self-explanatory.
So they are competing with Lossless Scaling (an indie group who figured out 3x and 4x framegen months ago) and modders (who figured out how to replace DLLs in game folders to update the DLSS version in the game ages ago)
Good to know all the trillions of $ are keeping them ahead of the curve
drowsy mason
# marsh helm ```To address the complexities of generating multiple frames, Blackwell uses har...
"Flip" is switching a backbuffer and a frontbuffer so the display will show the new picture, something like that. Metering is just a synonym for pacing here. Sounds like they worked on frame pacing so the generated frames would look smooth. It sounds like they're chucking finished frame visuals in buffers/memory somewhere and then waiting to make the pacing decision till the last possible moment, in hardware and closer to the "display out" part of the card, (for best results, I guess. Kinda makes sense but I'm reading between the lines/guessing tho, and who knows if it works well or not without proper testing.)
#
Reminds me of when they paid more attention to pacing for multi-GPU situations (SLI) than AMD did at the time (Crossfire) and their multi-GPU solution was much better for it. (Per DigitalFoundry, at least. I never saw SLI or Crossfire in person...)
The fact they are still comparing FPS numbers for "DLSS on" "DLSS Off" without saying which internal resolution, and now whether it's 2x, 3x or 4x framegen or framegen off, it's pretty bad form and very near going on meaningless.
going by 40 series chart below, they wanted to sell you on getting x2 perf with 'FG' on.. so them aiming at x2 fg vs x4 MFG isn't a surprise
Digital Foundry took a look at DLSS4, not final hardware/drivers, only had 5 hours to get test clips (might be stuff they missed), but as a first look in one game, they were positive about it:
#
It's feeling like Blackwell is "Gimmicks Done Right" ™️
left heart
#
I feel like the whole "gimmick" critique for graphics stuff doesn't mean much. it's eye candy, it's supposed to be gimmicks.
drowsy mason
#
If game devs have to assume competent upscaling and framegen to be playable at high settings, and it's locked behind proprietary single-vendor-only implementations of said upscaling and framegen, Nvidia may get to eat the full PC gaming GPU market and basically force AMD and intel out of the market.
left heart
#
I remember people dismissing tessellation because it was "gimmicky." and I'm just thinking, "yeah... that's the point"
drowsy mason
#
So Nvidia's tech is real and works, but it is seriously worth zooming out and asking "can the industry be healthy if we stake everything on one hardware vendor?"
#
Also: this stuff hasn't traditionally worked on Nvidia's entry-tier stuff. Base/rasterization framerate hasn't been good enough on those to feed into full 4K Performance DLSS + framegen (in a lot of games, max setings, etc.).
#
So, like, it raises the price of entry to "peak current gen graphics" even more
open rune
#
Is anyone expecting the low end cards to drive 4K or run "peak current gen graphics"
#
That seems like pretty squarely enthusiast territory
terse helm
#
lots of people are going "5070 = $600 4090"
left mulch
heh it isn't even "lots of people"....this is the exact language NVIDIA themselves are using.
left heart
#
yeah I don't believe that one
open rune
#
So it's just marketing then
terse helm
#
yeah it's based entirely on improvements to DLSS Frame gen
#
the 4090 can generate 1 frame, the 50 series can generate 4 or sometihng
#
so that's 4x performance!
open rune
#
Frame generation is awesome in the right situations but I'm curious how they have improved quality enough that they can squeeze out an extra three frames without it looking a mess. You can already see artifacting on the generated frames now if you look closely
marsh helm
#
thats 5090 at 4k and rt overdrive
terse helm
#
but there seem to be no numbers with settings that people might actually use
open rune
#
It's particularly interesting because a 4090 can already run it without frame gen, but in order to hold 60 FPS it needs to be at ~1440p
#
And with DLSS
#
So I'm curious how much extra real muscle the 5090 has over it before we start frame generation
marsh helm
#
the 4090 gets around 23fps with the same settings
carmine ibex
#
like 25-30%
#
but that's with heavy rt and frame gen
I expect 20% in a lot of games
#
half of the performance gain is probably the generous memory bandwidth
marsh helm
20% yeah
well it also has like 4k more cuda cores
i.e. 25%
marsh helm
20% more performance
they went to straight for the 40 series
and afaik none of the board partners did it
Is 422 actually "pro grade"? I think most actually pro folks use something that does 444 😉
(...also I wonder if the AV1 does grain synthesis yet...)
terse helm
#
yes, it is
#
4:4:4 is more of a specialty thing
drowsy mason
#
If I could make a chroma subsampling naming scheme, I would assume everything is described in terms of a 4x2 grid of pixels (like everyone already does) and use the terms "full", "half" or "quarter" to specify the resolution of color in terms of unique colors vertically and horizontally respectively.
Example: "half-half." Meaning half horizontal color resolution (4/2 = 2 unique horizontally), half vertical resolution (2/2 = 1 unique color vertically). (Would be equivalent to 4:2:0.)
terse helm
#
how do you describe 3:1:1?
drowsy mason
#
One does not describe 3:1:1 under said scheme. Out of spec.
terse helm
#
well in any case it sounds like your scheme just assigns words to the numbers
drowsy mason
#
Banned, even
terse helm
#
which just makes it longer
#
and tbh makes it a bit more confusing because 4:X:Y is about how many samples there are but you're flipping that around and talking about the resolution of the whole thing
drowsy mason
#
Lends itself to shorthands:
  • "full" = 4:4:4
  • "half" = 4:2:2 (4:4:0 is out of spec / banned (jk, unless...))
  • "quarter" = 4:1:1 4:2:0 I guess
  • "single" = 4:1:0???
sounds like a normal standard to me, constantly re-edited and full of "i guess"s
So, I went through my ~= 4500 game library in Playnite, flagging all games that support Ray Tracing based on recent updated lists of ray traced games found online. So far, this is all I found:
#
I'm sure there are a number of others that haven't made it to lists yet, but even that being the case, I doubt it would be bigger than 50% more or so. Goes to show just how little importance ray tracing is overall, at least for my library. Mind you, the flip side of that I suppose is that the total number of games might not be important so long as there are enough that give enough hours of enjoyment for the feature to matter, but then that is further offset downward by the number of games that technically support RT but don't do anything actually useful or meaningful with it too.
#
Another caveat, is that I am not a "new releases" flocker.
#
TBH though I'd like to see them do a remaster of "Lucius Demake" with ray tracing, because that would just be hilarious.
Also theres a loong interview with the radeon team about the future of Radeon
TLDR: They are using FSR 4 as a ZEN 1 restart for Radeon and rebuilding
We haven’t talked about this a lot, but you know, the journey that we’re on at this moment with RDNA 4 is kind of a new starting point for us, right? Building a reputation for Radeon, just like we had for Ryzen in the early years, where it’s focused on delivering better value for the end user, giving consumers more for their money than what the other guys are delivering, focusing on the features and capabilities that gamers care about most
since Summer ive played things like:
  • Oxygen Not Included
  • Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
  • Satisfactory
  • Stationeers
  • Void Souls
  • Backfirewall
  • Narita Boy
  • Duke Nukem 1, 2, 3D, 4Ever, Manhatten Project
  • showed off some 3D printing projects
  • played a bunch of demos during Steam NextFest
#
ive never been able to do the "im the 1 game streamer" type of thing, since there will be a time when that 1 game is no longer fun for me, or the audience for it just moves onto something else.
got meself a gpu anti sag thingy, only detail is that i cant forget to take it out
#
if i were to move the pc around, since it can fall if i turn the tower sideways
sudden adder
that reminds me, i still want to print one out for my system. Dont really need it, but it will look nice 😄
terse helm
#
just glue it?
umbral cove
umbral cove
i have seem some models that can screw in, but my case doesnt have places on the botton for the screwin
sudden adder
#
i have a self-adhesive magnetic sheet that I can cut to the right size and stick on the bottom
umbral cove
#
yeah.. that will do it
#
iam now a bit paranoid about the stand bein able to fall, i wish it could stick better
#
the magnet is not weak, but the stand is a bit weighty, due to bein full metal
sudden adder
#
when you get into 3d printing, you start picking up extra hardware and/or crafting materials that can go along with it. Magnetic sheets, ball bearings, assortments of deez nuts and bolts
umbral cove
#
hell, i really wanted to upgrade my cpu
#
but em price raises, i guess the start o year is the worst time to buy some stuff
amber sparrow
#
Why do you need a mount for the 6650? Isn't that thing tiny?
tall vapor
For anti-sag what also works is a... piece of string. Tie to end of graphics card&tie other end to mesh on top of case if available
umbral cove
#
but first i will up de cpu
tall vapor
umbral cove
#
and yeah.. while my 6650 aint that big, theres certainly some sag regardless
umbral cove
amber sparrow
#
Guess the reinforced slot on my board works rather well
#
¯_(ツ)_/¯
umbral cove
#
mine has that aswell
#
but it wont prevent sag
#
its too far away for the other side
amber sparrow
tall vapor
#
I also lift the butt of graphics card as I screw in the io brackets, that helps too. rather than screwing it in place pre-sagged batty_giggle
amber sparrow
#
Brackets don't really hurt anything so no biggie. Mine just makes for extra work should I wanna go in there and mess around
left heart
#
I like that string idea
umbral cove
tall vapor
#
preferably that string is tied to the finstack around a heatpipe on the card or whatever rather than the pcb
tall vapor
amber sparrow
#
Sheeesh my card weighs 1784g
#
First time I've looked that up
umbral cove
#
yeah... get a anti sag thingy for it
amber sparrow
#
Have one. Removed
#
Don't wanna put it back in and it's fiiiiiine
umbral cove
#
i think it wouldnt fit on my case, by 1cm doggolul
amber sparrow
#
That's why I had to get a new case when I got this card. Didn't fit in the 220t by like 5cm
umbral cove
#
full tower?
amber sparrow
220t is a mid-tower apparently
umbral cove
Wireless way more comfy
Don't have to take em off to grab a drink
umbral cove
i tried using a TWS i have here, but bluetooth audio seems to have way too much latency
tall vapor
#
didn't even see the missing earpads but yah that too, ig I just don't like to keep headphones under desk (or anything really) doggolul
#
I'm runnin me combo of dt700prox drivers&earcups&pads with the dt770 headband, as always
amber sparrow
#
under side of desk has too much space to mount/hide things
tall vapor
#
under desk is for storage boxes, nothing for what I might accidentally kick and a cable touching me legs while playing something that creeps me out.... uh noooooo
#
gives me the creepy crawlies doggolul
amber sparrow
#
thats fair. I've tried many options for best way to run headphone cable to have least interference. straight under desk seems to get in my way the least personally
#
on top it tends to interfere with moving mic or in way of mouse. left side under desk would get hung up on chair arm.
#
thats another reason wireless atm is freeing. sure, taking lower audio quality, but nothing in my way!
tall vapor
#
I got me Interface on left side of desk, got the short cable attached to headphones when at desk (aah, minixlr) and I'm all good
Lossless Scaling 3 beta is out. Max framegen amount is capped at something arbitrarily high (20x) and not really recommended.
But for the meme: "DLSS 4 can do 4X framegen? Hold my beer."
#
Soon: Rainbow 6 Siege at 3000FPS
tall vapor
#
never understood the point of "lossless scaling" if there's magpie
#
something exists, has existed for quite some time
someone makes commercial software that does the same thing
commercial offering gets hyped up&popular
wary holly
Has framegen, for those who dig that sort of thing.
#
I never did try framegen for games anywhere ever, maybe I should.
tall vapor
#
framegen can get pretty nasty, esp when done on an external level rather than in the game
#
messes up hud stuffs pretty damn good for example
I don't think you'd want to do more than like x6
And only if base frame rate is like 80
So 80>480
But still cool you can force it
copper notch
DLSS 7.0 will be able to take 0fps games and make them 1200fps, and doesn't even need a framebuffer! 🙂
The only problem, is it has infinite latency. 🙂
Fsr isn't the hardware or generation of it
#
It's a frame gen algo
#
And doesn't correlate to hardware reset
sudden adder
apparently AMD at some point said it was going to be RDNA4 exclusive, but now are saying it wont be or isnt or just a timed exclusive or whatever.. -if- you can believe headlines
marsh helm
they are targeting on gaming
amber sparrow
Fsr 4 being rdna4 exclusive has nothing to do with them thinking of rdna 4 as a radeon reset like ryzen was for cpu
That's the point cookie is making
marsh helm
to me its a different way thinking then we had before
#
If an audio file has embedded cover art, it won't play the audio back correctly in monitor
#
It'll work the once, then not again unless I turn off and on again the monitor, or relaunch OBS
#
Seems to only do it for audio files with embedded cover art though
I'm trying to get yt-dlp to download a Twitch video.. but it isn't working
I'm trying to download from about 33 hours. 38 minutes, 30 seconds into the stream to about 30 seconds after that
it like starts saying it's downloading something and I see a bunch of data transfer but it goes waaaaaay past when it's supposed to stop.. after about 20 minutes of data download for when I told it 30 seconds I'm like... what
and I don't think it even actually saved anything
#
I see they have a Discord.. maybe I'll ask there
the thing is, I tested downloading from like the 10 hour mark, and it worked fine... just not 33+ hours into the stream...
I use HEVC with RTMPS on YT here with 30.2.3 on 1050 mobile. Haven't had any issues with it so far, so it could just be RTMPS perhaps?
amber sparrow
#
Hls is wonky AF for YT
copper notch
#
I really like the video quality on YT so much better than Twitch, I'm surprised more people don't use YT for streaming. Especially casual stuff.
#
I used to have 20Mbps up but upgraded a few years ago to 300/100 to be able to push the bitrate on YT and it worked amazing. Got upgraded to 200Mbps now and not even pushing it to their 51 limit and it is still pretty flawless. It's too bad Twitch and other platforms are devoid of the moolah to let that happen.
terse helm
I've always thought YT was worse
