#

internet says to clean them, that's not sufficient.

#

and while only replacing the inner ones did stop the feedback for mine, they still sounded funny until I also replaced the outer ones

terse helm
#

the mics fail or what?

left heart
#

I'm not sure exactly how they fail, but the common theory seems to be the glue holding the paper dust filter on them degrades. maybe some got into the holes but idk for sure.

terse helm
#

ah

#

I have an xm5 theoretically

#

once my sister stops hogging it

left heart
#

after removing the filters I just cleaned the outside with isopropyl first, that didn't work. kinda gave up hope for those so I started being a lot more aggressive with cleaning and ordered replacements, digikey part number 668-1599-ND

#

aggressive cleaning (forcing iso into the mic and trying to dry it out with compressed air) stopped the feedback but broke the mics. frequency response on the mics was toast so ANC didn't work right

#

well, I only tried that with the inner pair of mics

#

oh yeah and you're gonna want JIS screwdrivers because ofc

terse helm
#

can't go without when dealing with electronics tbh

#

hi

languid cradle
#

That’s janky and not an option

left heart
#

that's what professionals do

languid cradle
#

Too bad they haven’t updated their camcorder line since 2019, and the only one they made that can do 4K60 is from 2017-

languid cradle
#

Like ok maybe if I was always recording stationary..

#

But that’s not the case

left heart
#

typically you'll see mounting solutions in cages like smallrigs

languid cradle
#

People really should stop making excuses for Canon and see the actual problem they created

left heart
#

that way you'll have extra batteries, external recorders, etc... all in one place

languid cradle
#

If they made a good product in the first place, people wouldn’t need to add so much crap around it, at least not THAT much.

#

For example the R5C and R5II do amazingly. The R3 and R1 just have silicon in them from 2018.

#

And let me remind you in a flagship product that costs 6 grand

#

People can defend them all they want but that’s inexcusable.

left heart
#

I'm not sure what the deal is with silicon from 2018 if it does what it needs to do in a sports body

languid cradle
#

Ye

#

The DIGIC X is from 2018

#

And their solve to this for some of their high end cameras is to put ANOTHER inefficient chip into them that makes the camera overheat even faster

#

Instead of updating the one they already had

left heart
#

well, I don't know enough about VLSI to tell you whether that would even change one way or another today

languid cradle
#

Plus even if they couldn't make them more efficient - They should have put a fan in it - saying the sentence in the meme I sent shouldn't be able to be said and have it be true - It should have stayed a meme

left heart
#

weather sealing is a desirable property for a lot of their customers

languid cradle
#

You're telling me that they're water resistent?

#

No one is gonna take that 6 grand camera out in the rain - regardless - they'd have a case for that or something

#

which would make the overheating problem worse!

prisma dove
#

Sure they will. Especially when it's for work

languid cradle
#

Not the bare camera

prisma dove
#

That's the whole point of weather resistance treatment.

#

I have two bodies that I'm comfortable taking out in the rain. I don't changes lenses in the rain or open any doors, but it works.

languid cradle
languid cradle
#

You'd take the Canon R3 out in the rain

#

bare camera

#

no case, etc..

prisma dove
#

Yes. Fuji X-T3 and X-H2. Several of my lenses are weather resistant

languid cradle
#

I am very confident the Canon line I'm talking about is not of the type you should take out in the rain no matter what lens

prisma dove
#

Take a look at photojournalists and other freelance photographers, they are out in the elements all the time, to get the shots. Weather can't get in the way.

languid cradle
#

That's what a case is for

prisma dove
#

No case

languid cradle
#

It should be

prisma dove
#

why?

languid cradle
#

That would solve the overheating problem

#

and other cooling related issues

prisma dove
#

A case would trap heat.

languid cradle
#

not enough for an internal fan to be useless

left heart
prisma dove
#

Besides, if you are doing enough serious recording with a mirrorless or dslr, you can avoid heat problems by using an external recorder.

left heart
#

also internal fans will run you into vibration problems

languid cradle
#

I could design a fan cooling system that would work without a case and in the rain

#

so could they

languid cradle
#

like you can on the R5C and stuff

#

and the grips

left heart
#

well, if I'm out shooting long exposures I wouldn't want my camera moving. but that's going to be what gets my sensor the hottest

prisma dove
#

Some camera bodies accept fans. And my battery grips are as well. Seems like this is going around in circles.

languid cradle
#

the overheating issue is mostly for video

languid cradle
#

even the R10

prisma dove
#

I get the feeling there's some buyer's remorse here, for picking a certain DSLR line.

languid cradle
#

maybe not the R50 because that'd be kinda ridiculous, same for the 100

languid cradle
#

The Lumix S5II came VERY close

prisma dove
# languid cradle They *all* should

Why should they? Cost money to develop WR into cameras and accessories. Not everyone wants to buy it, so there are different lines within manufacturers, for choice.

languid cradle
#

It could cost $1,000 and I'd buy it

#

the grip for the R8 for example, if that existed

#

with a fan

prisma dove
#

But they do that already. Sony, Fuji.

left heart
#

again the r3 is a camera designed for sports stills

languid cradle
#

I tried Sony and they weren't... want I needed.

#

and their color is not great and I don't do color grading, and won't start

languid cradle
left heart
#

sorry, that's not how products work

prisma dove
#

that's cool. I don't want to learn color grading either. Although, it's not that difficult once you learn the how. It's learning to control how much, so you don't go too far.

languid cradle
#

especially in 2024 when its so trivial I could literally tell them how to do it

languid cradle
#

Heard good things though

prisma dove
#

yep, I'm out. Flagships are usually designed for a certain pricepoint, not the unlimited model.

languid cradle
#

If a camera costs 6 grand in 2024 it better be able to outperform a phone

#

if it can't, that's embarassing and a waste of money

prisma dove
#

and yet, for 6 grand, it doesn't have cellular?

languid cradle
#

Sure!

#

Why doesn't it?

#

It has wifi and bluetooth

#

and ethernet

#

kidding (mostly)

#

It might also not have GPS which is dumb but I might be incorrect

sudden adder
left heart
#

it's important to remember that cameras are specialized instruments. if you want to jack of all trades it, it's going to be master of none

languid cradle
prisma dove
prisma dove
#

My smoker is wifi too

languid cradle
#

cmon context people

#

My 5 year old phone can record 4K60 until the storage is full

prisma dove
languid cradle
#

no overheating nonsense

#

that's because it has a 5nm processor inside

#

Canon should take notes on that

prisma dove
#

Then why complain here? Find Canon.

languid cradle
#

and make something that isn't a 20+nm one that overheats and clearly needs better cooling

languid cradle
sudden adder
#

Apply for a job at Canon as an ideas man

languid cradle
#

Or I'd start a crowdfunding thing so I can basically make the GX10 but in 2027 or whatever - An updated consumer 4K60 camcorder

languid cradle
#

Intel NUC?

#

no jank?

left heart
#

I wouldn't be too quick to point to the processor's manufacturing node considering how complicated processing bottlenecks can turn out to be computationally

prisma dove
#

really sounding like buyer's remorse. Fuji will heat up to, I can get probably 30 minutes of 4k60. But most of the time, my shots only last 5-10 minutes. If you need a camera to record 4k60 for extended periods, you should look at different equipment.

prisma dove
languid cradle
prisma dove
#

external recorders?

languid cradle
#

for example, the R5C I usually shoot with (because I have really no other option), I had a Panasonic HC-X1500 for 2 days and immediately realized it was garbage

#

then I got a GX10 and that was AMAZING, but of course looked a decade old and the video quality was falling behind

languid cradle
#

and expensive

prisma dove
#

Not really that expensive and definitely not jank, as you can get industry standard video recording.

left heart
#

compared to full frame glass? not really doggolul

prisma dove
#

expense is relative to your means and your goals.

languid cradle
#

People have brought this up to me a few times already but I just assumed it would be extremely jank and annoying to carry around with me recording/walking/on location

prisma dove
#

But yes, good equipment can be expensive, but it should be to a point, to help ensure quality and reliability of the recordings

languid cradle
#

but if it doesn't require an additional power source that might work

prisma dove
languid cradle
#

(The R100 wasn't out yet XD we had preordered the R50)

terse helm
#

and at no point did it occur to you to buy a video camera?

languid cradle
#

yes

#

It did

#

and yes I did

languid cradle
#

I was gonna Google search it but tbh there's so much trash out there, I'd have gone down a rabbit hole

prisma dove
#

shit, my next purchase is a gimbal for the X-H2. Love the camera for video

terse helm
#

atomos ninja?

sudden adder
prisma dove
languid cradle
left heart
#

yeah it does

prisma dove
languid cradle
languid cradle
#

We've come a long way since the 8- wait... (XD)

left heart
#

are you sure you're looking at the page for the newest one? could be a new feature

terse helm
#

tbh almost all those things can record h264 or h265, anything beyond that is the selling point

left heart
#

what with the whole "new Ninja line" part

languid cradle
#

Huh I might have to try this

left heart
#

as much as I wish Fuji would fix their stupid spatial filtering on raw files, I know that's never going to happen. they care too much about hot pixels and decided to take that tradeoff. there's no two ways around it, I just have to do the best with what I've got.

prisma dove
#

they need to fix the bad firmware updates that screwed with AF

left heart
#

unless I decide to be the only person on the planet who firmware hacks an XT3, I just make do with what I've got.

prisma dove
#

lol I'm glad I shoot MF on my X-T3

tall vapor
#

Being able to mix&match is one of the big things that I very much like, so yeah for as long as the camera can output a good&clean feed to an external recorder I'm happy

left heart
prisma dove
#

clean output 👍

tall vapor
#

external recorders also allow you to get better encoders&new codecs without swappin out the entire body

prisma dove
#

and LUTs
and some have separate mic inputs, external recording to USB storage.

tall vapor
#

yup

#

or just directly to NVMe, dependin on your bandwith reqs

prisma dove
#

that would be nice

#

8k60 here we come

tall vapor
#

cfexpress is very much a thing for example, and that's literally PCIe nvme let's go

prisma dove
#

I don't like the prices on CF Express, but for video recording it's practically necessary.

tall vapor
#

aye

languid cradle
#

140 bucks or so for a really fast 512GB card

#

I mean that's like twice as much as an NVMe

#

but it's tiny and meant to go into your camera

left heart
#

miniaturization comes at a premium

languid cradle
#

it's not like Canon's 300 buck USB-C power adapter

tall vapor
languid cradle
#

true

#

could be worse though for sure

#

could be Red

#

I guess they make more NVMes than they make CFExpress cards?

tall vapor
languid cradle
#

the mags

tall vapor
#

yes

left heart
languid cradle
#

LOL

#

wow ok then I'm surprised they aren't a dollar per gig

#

(still)

tall vapor
#

cause there's nothing all too special about them

languid cradle
#

Economy of scale

tall vapor
#

well yeah, but nonetheless

#

those would hit harder if they actually were special

#

that's what I mean

languid cradle
#

They are special because they go into your camera well

#

a 2230 wouldn't do that

#

Oh and they're fast

#

you could say the same about SD cards really

tall vapor
languid cradle
#

V90 SD cards especially

tall vapor
#

what

languid cradle
#

It's all the same NAND right

tall vapor
#

point is that the cfexpress cards are more expensive than they should be all while considerin the economics of scale still

languid cradle
#

I have a feeling they might be LOOSING money on them

#

actually

tall vapor
#

oh absolutely not kek

languid cradle
#

I mean if the prices of NVMe drives are what they are and CFExpress costs are what they are..

tall vapor
#

those cards are considered to be "pro equipment", and as soon as something as classed as such the margins go through the roof

languid cradle
#

twice the price might not even be enough - they must be razor thin profits

tall vapor
#

absolutely not

languid cradle
#

Before we started looking into them, I thought they costed like 3x more than they do

#

Like 3 years ago

#

but it turns out they don't cost much more than external SSDs

#

prices vary of course though

prisma dove
#

Here's a flash drive.
What's the connector?
USB 3.0
okay, dirt cheap, dime a dozen.

Same chips, but now for "high speed recording and burst photography"
More money, more money.

tall vapor
#

flash drives actually are cheaper tho

#

hence me comparing them cfe cards to 2230 nvme drives

#

cause those are much closer

#

same fully integrated nand+controller chip package&all that

languid cradle
#

drop speed instantly

prisma dove
#

Yeah, I oversimplified, just the core chip.

languid cradle
#

I've only found one that isn't

#

the Buffalo one

tall vapor
prisma dove
#

well that's nice, if I need to hack one out and Macgyver it.

tall vapor
#

which are absolutely the same packages as what they stick into the cfe cards

#

would be ridiculous not to

prisma dove
#

I shopping for a couple new card readers now, since I have "expanded" to CF Express, along with my existing SD cards. Although, the data transfer via USB from the camera body has not been that bad. Luckily not a large amount of files yet, but I would love to have back up cards to alternate out when they get full vs copy/format each time.

tall vapor
#

wondered whether there be adaptors as me thinking made way too much sense, and well...

left heart
#

I like the little thermometer on that photo doggolul

tall vapor
#

just sayin

languid cradle
#

I have a combo SD/CFE reader but I can't find it anymore online lol

languid cradle
#

false advertising

tall vapor
languid cradle
#

@prisma dove This one has been great to me and it comes with a USB-C and a USB-A cable

languid cradle
tall vapor
#

yup, and those are the same as those m.2 nvme enclosures but as a slot thing with cfe slot

languid cradle
#

Those get so hot they often need heat sinks

prisma dove
#

oh, thanks, I've already found the two I want. One for home and one portable.

tall vapor
#

I just think it's funny that me chain of thought with "oh those cfe cards totally are just 2230 m.2 nvme drives but with a different connector on it" is literally all there is to it

languid cradle
#

For stationary I have an OWC enclosure that just happened to have a built-in CFExpress reader

languid cradle
#

Don't loose footage over it though

#
#

For example the USB-C Canon power adapter costs 300 bucks

#

and they have 2 different ones - One that costs 200 and one that costs 300

#

and they're both just USB-C PD

prisma dove
#

whoa, hold off on those links. We don't need all your search data in there.

languid cradle
#

No I'm trying to not talk out my ass, or appear to be

#

Not my fault it didn't embed

prisma dove
#

no, I'm saying we don't need everything in the link after the "?"

languid cradle
#

I don't screw with the links

prisma dove
#

it's not screwing with the links

languid cradle
#

Especially if I don't know what all of the info is

#

it is

#

removing stuff in the link is

#

I'm not gonna mess with it

prisma dove
#

you can easiy test it yourself.

languid cradle
#

If I cared

#

Not a big problem for me though

#

so I just don't

prisma dove
#

nice attitude, just helping you not clutter the server with posts that are longer than they need to be.

languid cradle
#

It's not a problem

amber sparrow
#

Good footfinder pic?

languid cradle
#

foot reveal

prisma dove
#

deadpool and wolverine, nice

languid cradle
#

Oh no what is footfinder.......

amber sparrow
#

Its......a thing

languid cradle
#

🫣

prisma dove
#

😏

tall vapor
#

I mean okay, the full cf express cards got the connector already on there of course, but otherwise 😅

languid cradle
#

And they're optimized for the use case, etc etc

tall vapor
#

m.2 nvme drives are fast, that's correct

languid cradle
#

and hot. Too hot.

opaque halo
prisma dove
#

"optimized" by marketing, for their intended customers.

tall vapor
#

yup

languid cradle
#

that too

amber sparrow
languid cradle
#

but also no

#

It's called not losing footage becuase of your equipment

tall vapor
#

in that pic above, see that? That's some nand and a bogstandard phison nvme controller

prisma dove
#

and as the class has learned today, there are options for that.

tall vapor
languid cradle
#

what's the thermals of that compared to a 128GB nvme

#

at a consistent 2000MB/s write

tall vapor
languid cradle
#

probably not good

#

I rest my case

languid cradle
tall vapor
languid cradle
tall vapor
#

not for any technical reason

tall vapor
#

yeah but there's no technical reasons as to why ya can't

languid cradle
#

Because it's a bad idea

#

that's why

#

like sure it'll work for a lil bit

#

then you'll have footage missing at some point

prisma dove
#

🍿

languid cradle
#

and then it will stop working

languid cradle
prisma dove
#

🤨

languid cradle
#

It'll pop like popcorn™️

#

(overexaggeration)

prisma dove
#

That's not what my popcorn is for.

languid cradle
#

the point is it'll overheat

#

and kill itself

#

so don't?

opaque halo
prisma dove
#

I'm all out of beer today, but after tomorrow's costco run, I'll be stocked.

languid cradle
#

Forgive me for not wanting people to loose footage because they want to be clever.

prisma dove
#

eh, it's not that. It's your approach. A lot of us here already have done our research and found our solutions for our goals and needs.

tall vapor
#

I never said that I recommended folk to plug m.2 ssds into their own adapters rather than buying one that is preadapted

#

All I did was lookin into it

languid cradle
prisma dove
#

some of us are certainly curious on "how would that shit work" and we like to FAFO. for curiosity sake.

languid cradle
#

just in case someone sees that and says "huh, that's a cool solution!" and they do it, only to turn out for it to be a very hot solution

languid cradle
#

I'm not disputing that

#

I'm just trying to discourage people from losing footage

tall vapor
#

Like if I did do that of course I'd pick me drives wisely rather than droppin a random 2230 off of aliexpress or wherever into me adapter

languid cradle
#

Because we all can agree that's... bad..

prisma dove
languid cradle
#

it's just a bad idea

languid cradle
#

I'm still curious about the temps

#

because I could be wrong but I'll probably never know

tall vapor
languid cradle
#

I wonder if that's the difference

#

The NVMe might not be getting as good contact with metal

tall vapor
#

thermalpads just the same

languid cradle
#

maybe

tall vapor
#

the main factor that limits the cfe cards from overheating is that I have never seen one that does pcie 4x4 at full speed

languid cradle
#

3500MB/s doesn't require that?

tall vapor
languid cradle
#

oh yup

#

8

#

yeeaaahhh I doubt anyone would ever need that

tall vapor
#

type a cards are a single lane, type b cards are 2 lanes, type c cards are 4 lanes

languid cradle
#

Unless one wanted to take 16-bit 12K60 raw video

tall vapor
#

and when you put your own m.2 2230 nvme drive into a type b adaptor you totally would be limiting it to the 2 lanes as well, of course

languid cradle
#

I can't find a single picture of a type C card

#

maybe they just don't make them yet

languid cradle
#

but I mean if you put one in an iPod it'll overheat

#

so speed somehow isn't the problem (Contrary to one of my questions earlier)

tall vapor
languid cradle
#

ah

#

would be cool having it though for just some really fast tiny external storage

tall vapor
languid cradle
#

I don't think there's any 8GBps external drives you can buy

#

definitely not in that form factor

tall vapor
#

and in an ipod ya can overheat even if ya dissipate like a watt for too long as there's no way to dissipate it

languid cradle
tall vapor
languid cradle
#

through the back getting extremely hot I assume

tall vapor
#

I'd stick the drive to the back and then assemble

languid cradle
#

DankPods probably did that tbh

tall vapor
#

seen that video, nah that's not what happened

languid cradle
#

dang

tall vapor
#

😅

languid cradle
#

welp that's my source XD

#

and the heatsinks that come with motherboards for NVMe drives

tall vapor
#

on the motherboards you actually do gen 4x4 or hell even gen 5x4

languid cradle
#

true

tall vapor
#

and in an ipod I can imagine that the power management of the drive be acting weird, with the whole PATA to nvme adapting business

languid cradle
#

I wish my MacBook Pro had a CFExpress slot

languid cradle
#

specifically

#

with a controller and everything

#

specifically for iPods

tall vapor
prisma dove
#

Sources are fleeting.
I'm curious, what camera you have that records 12k60? And you haven't discussed bitrates either, which impact the data writing.
Or is the 12k60 reference purely hypothetical? because if one can afford the 12k cameras that are available, they are probably aware of the best pratices for recording and storage solutions.

tall vapor
#

and the ipod adaptor specifically prolly has like a small list of recommended drives

languid cradle
#

but they're probably only doing 30fps

languid cradle
#

oh yea and he was using one that wasn't on that list XD

#

because it was too long

#

And possibly other reasons

tall vapor
#

yeah

#

and adapting new new stuffs to old old stuffs with active adapters&all

#

that can get weird quickly

prisma dove
languid cradle
#

no

#

since it exists

prisma dove
languid cradle
#

and we can very accurately calculate the storage requirements

tall vapor
prisma dove
languid cradle
#

Hell nah

#

I've only done 8K60 RAW

#

my puny 2000MB/s CFX cards were outmatched

#

but we know what 12K60 RAW would require

#

so it's not like I have to actually have something that can do it

#

it's just multiplying pixels

prisma dove
#

I'd rather have wisdom from direct experience

languid cradle
#

No direct experience can improve how the math works

#

You can't use most CFExpress cards for 12K video. Why? Because they aren't fast enough. Basic math.

#

Experience is immaterial to this point

prisma dove
#

That.. makes no sense. Math comes from experience, just like wisdom comes from experience. That's all.

languid cradle
#

If you have the numbers, you can do the same calculations as someone with the camera can

tall vapor
#

either way. No, sticking a decent 2230 into a cfe type b card and actually using the thermal pad that comes with the adapter won't give you any thermal issues whatsoever, since that is what the official cards do too (hell and those adapters usually give you more metal even than the official cards do, so it wouldn't surprise me if adapted runs cooler even 😅

languid cradle
#

and having the numbers is as easy as taking 4K60 and multiplying it by 3 I'm pretty sure

#

wait no

prisma dove
#

I think Cookie has some better math from experience on that.

languid cradle
#

4K15

#

Again you don't need experience to do the math

#

hang on

prisma dove
#

no, I won't be hanging onto anything.

tall vapor
languid cradle
#

15fps

#

I corrected myself after

tall vapor
#

whether it's 15 or 60 doesn't matter here

#

cause 12k is 3 times the number of pixels on the x axis, but also on the y axis

#

so really 12k is 9 4k feeds

languid cradle
#

yea I'm dumb sometimes

#

Bytes per second of a 12K60 stream at 12-bit

#

You don't need a camera to use a calculator.

#

Alr I forgot something but still

prisma dove
#

and yet nowadays, 99% of calculators have cameras!

languid cradle
#

that's what you'd need for 12K60 RAW 12-bit

languid cradle
#

20GBps - that's the number - no amount of experience is going to change that

prisma dove
languid cradle
prisma dove
#

Irony can be random.

languid cradle
#

ok

languid cradle
#

We’re ordering the Ninja to see if it does something useful for us

#

The only problem I can see is how it would be mounted. It would have to not be near the shoe because of the mic array I have to have there because the cameras don’t have stereo mics for some reason

#

But if it’s not there… then I’m holding it, and that won’t work.

#

I prefer experience over a lot of research so I just said screw it and we ordered it.

prisma dove
#

camera cage, with multiple mounting points.

#

I use a SmallRig cage for my X-S20, with a Universal Handle, and a couple other adapters to mount my external monitor, battery, wireless mic receiver and shotgun mic.

languid cradle
#

Sounds like hell honestly

#

But if people didn’t use them, they wouldn’t make em!

prisma dove
#

Maybe a little research?

#

This is how you build a camera rig.

#

Find the components that help you reach your goals

terse helm
#

yeah that's pretty standard once you want more than one thing to go with the camera

languid cradle
#

I don’t want that though

terse helm

languid cradle

Imagine if Canon put a stereo mic, a flash, a slightly better battery, and a fan into the R3

left heart
#

it'd be a whole lot bigger

languid cradle
#

They do that for the R10 and below (except for the fan and battery)

prisma dove
#

If you build it, they will come.

languid cradle
#

The R5C exists

left heart
#

also why are you using internal mics for anything other than sync?

prisma dove
#

This sounds a lot like the arguments for why certain hardware features are not standard in laptops.

languid cradle
#

It’s barely bigger and actually it’s much smaller than the R3

languid cradle
prisma dove
#

shotgun mic, which at least is better scratch audio if needed vs internal mic scratch audio.
(although, I was surprised with the internal mics (stereo) on the X-H2. Decent quality)

languid cradle
languid cradle
#

The problem is it’s in the shoe

#

Which means I can’t have a flash

#

Which also means I’d have to carry both my big flash unit and that mic

#

And I’d have to switch them mid-walk

#

That’s extremely irritating

prisma dove
#

No, most aren't stupid.
First, how do you power all those "standard features" on battery?
Second, how do miniaturize it and be marketable?

#

Why would you need a flash for video?

languid cradle
#

And the flash unit has a light on it

#

Which is very useful for video

#

Especially in the dark when the R5C focus doesn’t know what the hell to do

prisma dove
#

dude, you are niitpicking on stuff that already has real world solutions.

left heart
languid cradle
#

If they had real world solutions that worked for this use case, I’d either have them or have heard of them

languid cradle
#

And still much smaller than the R3 which does overheat, and doesn’t have a fan still

terse helm
#

you can also get something like this

left heart
#

okay lemme put it this way, if I'm shooting a sports event and the R3 was that much larger than the competition, I'd know what camera not to buy.

terse helm
#

if you weant to stick to the hotshoe mount

#

obviously multiple variations on this theme exist

languid cradle
#

But again that would have to carry the signals from the shoe

#

Because that’s how the mic works

languid cradle
prisma dove
#

I'd recommend a cage, and use its cold shoe mount plus multiple screw-in points. That Y bracket, with too much weight on it, will weaken a hot shoe mount over time. And that's a repair you don't want to pay for.

languid cradle
#

The R3 is significantly bigger

#

And the R5C didn’t need to be THAT much bigger to have a fan

left heart
#

the r3 has a built-in vertical battery grip...

languid cradle
#

They just wanted to use as much of their current design as possible

languid cradle
#

But this one does

#

You literally can’t even add a fan to the R3

left heart
#

difference here is I'd actually be using a vertical grip to shoot stills and wasting that space if I got it for video

languid cradle
#

See that hole?

#

Why they couldn’t do this for the R3 internally I will never know

left heart
#

see above discussion about weather sealing?

#

I feel like we're just going in circles. specialized tools are made for specialized tasks

languid cradle
#

I also said I could design a fan cooling solution that doesn’t make that impossible

#

So could they

left heart
#

go for it, good luck

languid cradle
#

Well one could always just… you know.. have a cover for the exhaust and intake vents

#

And turn off the fan when you use them in the rain

#

Not high tech but probably what they should have done

languid cradle
#

Kinda redundant to say though

I'm encountering a strange issue (I'm not trying to ask for troubleshooting/tech support, I just have one question.. more like a curiosity).

Whenever I go live on Twitch my Dota 2 game starts to have massive packet loss out (40-50%), at first I thought it was my ISP creating the issue but Twitch Inspector signals everything's fine on my end (no dropped frames, stream is smooth, in-game ping is fine), also other games are not affected by the same problem.. I can stream them without any packet loss (tested Valorant and Starcraft 2, and Counter Strike).

Can it be something related to the Dota servers? but it's really odd it happens only if I attempt to stream, off-stream the experience is smooth I get no packet loss at all 🤔

How can a game server/connection/routing thingy have issues ONLY if I stream? (this is the actual curiosity I got if anyone has a clue)

unless its cooked into DLSS

#

or just makes RT use a ton less resources

#

and create less noise

#

i dont see game devs making full use of it

copper notch
# marsh helm theres 0 games or companies that will make use of it tho

What I predict is that they'll take some ancient game like Quake or whatever again and make a version that uses it to show off the tech, but that if you tried to use it in a modern game it will be a total 5fps slideshow on a 5090, and 0.1fps on a 5060, and not support any older hardware. Then in 4-6 generations they'll have it working well across the stack, and AMD will have something comparable, and it will have been bought up over time by enough consumers that a game developer can feel confident enough people have it to sell their game. But probably it ends up being an enhancement tech rather than a mandatory replacement tech, as the latter wont be used for 10 years like you said. But if they can use existing tech and enhance it with something new, then some devs will opt into it if NVIDIA pays them enough money and does the work for them.

You know, kinda like ray tracing. 🙂

marsh helm
#

yep 100%

copper notch
marsh helm
#

well its all amd is talking about when it comes to neural

sudden adder
# marsh helm nobody knows how to make a good game

Dont make a blanket statement like that. Plenty of good games by good devs out there. Klei (oxygen not included), Brace Yourself (Necrodancer), Machine (Indiana Jones), System Era (astroneer), IOI (hitman), etc

marsh helm
#

are those AAA?

#

i feel they are more AA

#

or less

sudden adder
#

Indie and Hitman id consider AAA grade

marsh helm
#

it wasnt really that good at all for a long time tho

#

the first year of the first hitman game was really buggy

#

but the current one is really good

sudden adder
#

I didnt think so, and i played it for the whole year of releases

marsh helm
#

i kept being seen in bushes

#

and takedowns would teleport me to the other side of walls

sudden adder
#

never had those issues at all

marsh helm
#

im talking about the 2012 version

#

oh god im old

sudden adder
#

Ah, yeah, that one doesnt count. Im referring to the HITMAN trilogy that became World of Assassination

marsh helm
#

ooh that one i heard is really good

#

its also on sale is it worth getting?

sudden adder
#

Yes, very much worth it

marsh helm
#

freelancer mode cost extra

#

the rest are above my limit of $20

#

do i need freelancer mode?

sudden adder
#

The $3 one is basically Hitman 1 from 2017

#

$28 is all 3 plus the community content plus the freelancer roguelike mode, plus the weekly and monthly Elusive Target modes

#

Im betting if you get the $3 one and like it, the $28 one will get discounted a bit if you do decide to get it

marsh helm
#

blobsweats ill wait till i get my pc

#

but ill wishlist it

sudden adder
#

Its actually really cool they offer the first game, technically, for $3

marsh helm
#

damn nvidia

sudden adder
#

And the steam winter sales havent started yet either, lol. I think thats tomorrow

marsh helm
#

oh theres MORE THINGS

#

to TAKE MY MONEY?!?!

#

i still havnt unboxed stuff from bf

#

im playing elin currently

#

im saving up for a trex pet

sudden adder
#

My 3060 12gb should be in today, hope its during my stream so i can swap out my gaming pcs 1660.

marsh helm
#

ooh nice nice

#

for me to get the 4090 or whatever i need to be able to show i can at least make memes that ppl view

#

or im not gonna buy it

#

so im aiming for maaybe march

sudden adder
#

Then i gotta RMA my PowerColor RX 7600 and hopefully get one back that doesnt hard crash the PC it is in when it runs games

marsh helm
#

that sucks

#

that the 7600 didnt work

#

was it overheating?

sudden adder
#

Not overheating at all. Just hard crashes the PC when a game is running, almost at random.

#

But its fine for normal pc use

marsh helm
#

thats very odd

#

what did powercolor say?

sudden adder
#

also it wouldnt properly run Elden Ring or Armored Core 6. Chugged at a weird and laggy 58 fps that -felt- like 45.

#

Havent gone thru the rma process yet, since i dont have another gpu for my linux pc until the 3060 is in and i can put the 1660’back into it

marsh helm
#

should start it asap

sudden adder
#

Had to swap those gpus (7600 and 1660) just so i could stream and game on my dual pc setup

#

Ive still got about a year left on my warranty, and i am fine starting the process at the start of the new year so holiday madness can get out of the way

marsh helm
#

well they normally give you a few weeks to ship it once you start
