@open rune That'd be a good idea if games had universal common inputs, but they don't. In stalker games, for example, E is "lean right", but in half-life it's "interact", and "f" is "flashlight" in both half-life and stalker, whereas in many newer games "f" is "interact".

Maybe that's more trouble than it's worth I dunno

I see a lot more games requiring a press and hold to skip cutscenes these days

wary holly

Serious Sam games went from "click to skip" to "hold to skip" as of 2017 for that.

livid plover

awful games that don't filter/hold for that input sucks. i've accidentally skipped a lot of tutorials/cutscenes from adjusting my volume via keyboard scroller, cause it's an input so oh you must want to skip

wary holly

Can't say I'm fond of it, but this is still a major upgrade over unskippable cutscenes, especially unskippable cutscenes with QTEs or where you have to hold a button for several minutes of real time (yes, that's you, Ubisoft).

But the best option is "press any key to get the skip key tooltip to appear, press the skip key to skip".

I saw Daniel Owen's video where he talks about how PBO may boost 20% in Cinebench artificial benchmark, but how everyone's results of using PBO in gaming workloads only produces about a 2% gain, which is interesting because everyone is rolling with the 20% number as a saviour for the product, when they're not going to get that in real world games et al. :/ Haven't watched HUB's new vid but thanks for linking it.

marsh helm
#

i expect to see it get better in a few months when the new motherboards drop

#

if you can put 7000mhz on it then it will hit 20% in games

copper notch
#

Comparing to 7000 series using the same RAM? What is the stability and lifespan reduction of the processor running that far out of official spec also?

#

I saw reviews where people couldn't get some of the CPUs to run stable even with 6000MT/s RAM also.

#

And if you increase the memory speed and get higher performance... is that CPU performance gain, or RAM gain? It's a stretch IMHO.

#

It's assigning memory speed gains as if they were CPU architectural gains, when it isn't.

#

Another factor Daniel Owen brings up that I had not considered, and I had not heard any other reviewers I watched mention, is that the newer processors do not come with CPU coolers, while some of the previous gen processors did, so you have to spend additional money on a cooler if you don't already have one and do a build with the new chips. That adds to the cost and needs to be accounted for as well.

#

Another thing I think is worth mentioning is that different people will try to put their own spin on it to paint the narrative they want to be true, however there is a truth that supercedes all of that, which is how many of these CPUs are going to fly off the shelves having been bought by consumers. What products are people going to actually buy when they go out there, voting with their collective wallets? Is the entire market going to run out and buy these processors, then turn PBO on and buy overpriced 7000 memory to gain a couple percent more performance? I didn't even mention the price jump one would have to pay to get 7000 memory above. I don't think that is what people are going to do. They're going to buy 7800X3D as a better value.

#

(because it is) 🙂

#

And in the future, AMD will no doubt release 7700X3D followup like they did with Zen 3's 5700X3D (and 5600X3D)

#

I think the market will decide overall "pass on 9600X + 9700X" in terms of sales reception, and these processors will get their prices lowered quite noticeably within 1-3 months as a result of that, and prior to X3D variants coming out, showing in financial terms that people are not impressed. Time will tell.

left heart
copper notch
#

Interesting data. AVX512 does look impressive on Zen 5, so workloads that use it will see much higher gains for sure and in that context the value proposition for the new processors using AVX512 are likely to be much higher. However, AVX512 is not really used by games or other consumer software for the most part that I've seen other than CPU video encode/decode, and most people are using hardware encoding anyway (although I personally am excited about it and do use both hardware and software encode). I don't think it is a selling feature really on the entry level CPUs though because anyone who knows about and needs/wants AVX512 is going to be using workloads likely where they are going to be looking more towards the 9900X or 9950X and not the entry level processors (IMHO anyway).

#

The big mystery to me though, is how is the 9950X going to fare in all of this. Will it be the saving grace of the lineup? On paper it seems like it might be, and I hope that it is as it is what I was personally interested in. 😛

left heart
#

idk, time will tell

#

but the proper avx512 support can improve things massively for very specific workloads

copper notch
#

Based on the info that's come out so far though, I speculate that the 9950X will do very well in synthetic benchmarks across the board killing it, and in certain productivity tests, but that it may be just as meh in gaming workloads, because the 6 and 8 core parts do not show any really meaningful gains in gaming loads when given a larger power budget, but perhaps the golden sample silicon of 9950X will be different, along with its higher clocks.

#

Also, another thing I'm interested in is reduced intra-chiplet memory latency that Zen 5 is alleged to have, which could show some useful benefits as well.

#

It is a little painful not getting any guidance from AMD as to when the X3D chips will be coming out though too. Who isn't excited to see what they will bring to the table despite the boring results of the already released SKUs?

left heart
#

heck, it's hard enough to implement an already homogeneous compute task in a way that'll take full advantage of that hardware, let alone define a more complex problem in those terms.

copper notch
#

I want to see AI benchmarks across all of these parts too, but that's not exciting enough for the mainstream reviews 🙂

#

(mind you the AI software I use personally does not use AVX512 AFAIK)

livid plover
#

AI on non-AI-accelerators seems silly

#

that'd be more a software-side improvement instead of CPU hardware improvement imo

copper notch
#

AI software does not run 100% entirely on the GPU. Even when using GPU or NPU acceleration, AI and machine learning applications still run on the CPU, and CPU based optimizations and features do speed up AI/ML/DL workloads so long as the software utilizes them.

#

An example one can look at that doesn't support AVX512 specifically but does use AVX2, and has an extension to support AVX also, is LM Studio. You can offload your LLM to the GPU, and there will be a noticeable difference in performance of the LLM whether using AVX or AVX2 on the CPU side of the software. (Hopefully they add AVX512 support in the future as well)

#

Also, when using AI models, ideally you want to fit the entire model into VRAM to maximize GPU acceleration however this limits the maximum size of the model that can be loaded, as well as the maximum context length that can be used. It is quite common for people to want to use larger models and split the model between the GPU and CPU to find the right balance in performance vs. accuracy.

#

Split GPU/CPU is a performance hit for sure, but one can still get performance high enough to be a useful scenario. I see a lot of people doing this in LM Studio Discord to be able to run 70b models or other large models and still get 7+ t/s of performance as they prefer the higher quality and don't mind the perf hit as long as it is faster than they can read.

#

Another thing I'm not personally highly knowledgeable about but I've heard people discuss is that the bucket term "AI" means a lot of different things, and how the hardware gets used by training, fine-tuning, and inferencing is quite different.

#

One of the big problems with AVX512 as I see it, is that it isn't available on all consumer CPUs, and so developers have to support their products on CPUs that do and do not have it, and it is extra work to support it. Since the majority of consumers do not have it, spending the resources to support it in games (for physics for example) or various other apps that could benefit from it isn't going to be super high priority for a while. So it will likely only get used in special purpose software that gets huge gains from it, where the software can expect that its users will be buying CPUs that have it for the huge gains they will get.

left heart
#

I wish that article actually linked to the paper instead of a 404 page

copper notch
#

IIRC CDPR had a Cyberpunk 2077 release that had AVX512 support very briefly but it was apparently a mistake as the game broke on most CPUs and they had to rush out another patch to disable it. Looks like they were testing with it internally and didn't autodetect and shipped it by oopsie.

terse helm
#

probably not "most"

left heart
#

or like, wrote the title of the paper anywhere so I could look it up easily

#

instead of just the meaningless word slop that doesn't actually tell me anything about how they did what they did

terse helm
#

but whenever anyone releases a game that uses those instructions (and a bunch of other ones) all the people with 12+ year old CPUs come out of the woodwork and complain at their loudest about it

copper notch
#

Yeah, that happens with the LLM software too. It is surprising how many people are still trying to use processors that do not support AVX2.

#

We probably wont see very many games using AVX512 for anything for another generation or 2 of CPUs though because of the % of consumers that have CPUs that support it, and consoles do not support it either currently.

#

Found an informal list without cited references of games that use it allegedly:

#

Will remain to be seen if that makes it into any of their future CPUs (or if they are even around to make CPUs in the future), but that should be a good shot in the arm for boosting performance if it comes to be.

left heart
#

#

copper notch
#

So, I finally got through the new Hardware Unboxed re-review of Zen 5. Nothing surprisingly new. It looks even worse now when compared to equivalent TDP parts from previous generation considering they came with a CPU cooler and you have to buy one separately for the new parts further increasing the cost. PBO is a silicon lottery and not a guarantee, and testing shows a max of about 1 to 1.5% performance boost in games if you win that lottery, at the cost of eliminating any power efficiency gains. And faster memory kits do absolutely nothing to improve gaming performance above what AMD's recommended to use. Pretty much dispelling all of the myths. Great comprehensive updated coverage.

#

What I found particularly amusing is how some people are claiming PBO boosts gaming performance by +20% because of Der8auer's video showing 20% gain in some synthetic benchmark or productivity app (I forget which), while der8auer's own benchmark data showed the few games he tested to only get around 1-1.5% performance gain with PBO, in line with HUB's results. LOL

#

In my experimentation, SMT can boost or hinder a given game, it's kind of random I've found. I found that disabling SMT in Cyberpunk gives the best results overall for example. As does restricting it to a single CCD on 16 core parts.

#

It's interesting to see how such architectural features affect different games and other software often in ways we wouldn't predict or expect.

scarlet kernel
#

Same behavior on 12 core parts

#

Source: 5900X, vrchat and Cyberpunk both like when I disable smt and affinity lock them

copper notch
#

Yeah, it'd be worse on 12 core parts. I simulated that on my 5950X by disabling the slowest 2 cores on each CCD

scarlet kernel
#

I was hoping the 9000 series would get me to upgrade but no. Not til the X3D.

left heart
#

more interesting than just on vs off is the differences between zen 5's on vs off to zen 4's on vs off.

copper notch
#

The average and max fps increase in Cyberpunk 2077 when both CCDs are enabled which is impressive, but the min FPS tanks significantly.

left heart
#

which is the whole point of the article though

scarlet kernel
#

9950X3D is my endgame, due to at LEAST the cpus running cooler.

#

better perf at lower-same wattage as my 5900X is the draw there.

copper notch
#

It does seem that in the coming years SMT is likely to go away completely though. Intel's already getting rid of it, and I suspect we might see similar in Zen 6-8 timeframe on AMD too.

copper notch
#

I don't want to have to deal with Xbox game bar or other 3rd party software to do manual affinity.

#

Also, L3 benefits compiler performance which scales to both CCDs.

left heart
#

does it?

copper notch
#

It does in my testing, however it is software dependent based on build parallelism.

#

I was thinking about the advertised TDPs of the lineup and trying to picture how much better the 9950X might be than the rest of the lineup. On the single-chiplet parts the 65W TDP is about 88W power draw from various tech outlet's testing. I wonder what the power draw split is between the core die and the I/O die. I presume the dual-CCD chips I/O die has similar power draw to the single-CCD chip (do they use the same I/O die? Not sure). So one would think that worst case, the dual CCD chips with similar power considerations would be no more than double the TDP and power draw.

#

But accounting for the I/O die, it would be less than that. So 65W * 2, minus the I/O die... that'd be something south of 130W.

#

But with 9950X having advertised TDP of 170W, that gives the entire chip a huge amount more power budget. Accounting for the I/O die, it might be close to triple the power budget for double the cores if I'm reading things correctly. So it will be interesting to see how that works out.

#

These last few days of waiting for 9950X reviews are going to be painful. LOL

marsh helm
#

i just know that when reviewers tested with higher ram speed it increased fps

#

last gen the higher end ones had lower fps because it has to organize the ccds

terse helm
#

that's why I went from a 5900x to a 5800x3d

copper notch
# marsh helm i just know that when reviewers tested with higher ram speed it increased fps

Not all reviewers, and some couldn't get the CPU to work at all. It is silicon lottery and not something every person purchasing the hardware can expect as standard results. It is operating outside of official specs, and the performance gains are marginal for the gold samples that it might benefit, and it isn't the speed of the processor you're measuring, it is the speed of the processor.

#

It'd be like doing the same in reverse and testing a particular speed of RAM with one CPU and then testing it with a newer faster CPU and claiming the RAM is faster when it isn't. The system may be faster, but not because the CPU made the RAM faster.

#

It's comparing apples to oranges desparately trying to cling to the idea that Zen 5 meets the claims of the manufacturer, which it does not in any reasonable objective testing done so far. It's cherry picking and grasping at straws with a dose of fanboism.

#

It's great to be a fan, I am a big fan of AMD probably more than any tech company. But no company is going to put out top tier products that knock our socks off every single generation, and AMD is no exception. Instead of going to outrageous lengths to try to say it is good, people need to accept it for what it is.

#

And, then there's also the fact that... at least it's not Intel.

#

It has that going for it.

#

Also, most consumers are not going to be buying the fastest hotrod memory kits that go way above vendor recommended specs. That is pretty much limited to the OC enthusiast crowd exclusively, even if it did give results in line with the cost increase, which it does not.

#

And even if it did, it wouldn't be the processor doing the work, but the RAM as stated above.

#

Show me a 45m long unbiased review of these processors using 7000-8000MT/s RAM across multiple random samples of AMD CPUs that are representative of what the average consumer would get when buying a CPU, and not just cherry picked gold samples shown with bias in the best light possible, with meaningful gains, and then there's something to say. Otherwise it is just fanboi noise as far as I'm concerned (and as an AMD fan myself, although not fanboi).

#

Plus, the HUB video that you yourself linked earlier debunks any claims of PBO or RAM giving any meaningful difference.

carmine ibex

not... really
if it's already converting a lot of stuff to WebP, surely it can do WebP>WebP
it already converts PNGs into WebP for the previews and all the emotes are WebP and the stickers AFAIK are animated WebP
maybe they don't want you to post a superior format and they want you to use stickers cerber127Smug

# livid plover bad formats

I still don't know what you mean by this
I mean, sure, WebP isn't as efficient for lossy compression as AVIF or HEIC... and it's not as efficient at lossless as JXL.. but it is significantly more efficient than PNG... and significantly more efficient than JPG and SIGNIFICANTLY better than gif
gif sucks.. seriously

livid plover
#

anything... isn't it webp? or some other format also doesn't embed/work on the ios discord app

#

also just cuz it's "better" doesn't mean adaption is gonna happend anytime soon sadly, avif/heic is still consistently a pain in the ass across the board

carmine ibex
#

yeah, cause Apple refuses to support WebP or VP8/VP9 for some reason

livid plover
#

it's not hard to beat JPG given it's age

carmine ibex
#

AVIF really isn't too bad.. but HEIC, even though I find it to be slightly more efficient, is kinda dead on support
which is weird because I'd expect AV1 to encode better than HEVC but I guess HEVC wins in intraframe compression smolShrug
it's not a big difference, though

copper notch
carmine ibex
#

that doesn't make sense, VP9 is a patent free codec

livid plover
#

nah it's just apple being apple

#

same for enforcing their own browser engine as the only allowed on iOS

#

why? probably to "ensure the experience" or something

terse helm
#

apple supports webp and vp8 and vp9 now

copper notch
#

Big companies like that tend to not support things just because they are free/open/whatever though, but rather because they are in extremely wide spread use and supported by lots of other companies and they benefit from being compatible, rather than being a trailblazer.

terse helm
#

vp8/9 being possibly patent-encumbered is worse than hevc being definitely patent-encumbered but with a way to pay for a license

#

paying for hevc is fine

#

paying the possible patent trolls (and litigation) that come out of the woodwork years later is not

copper notch
#

Yeah, companies will choose to support it if their legal team's risk assessment concludes that they are low risk of being sued or whatever. Some other company may decide the risk is too high. The market cap of the company will likely play into that decision becaues the bigger the market cap, the more money someone potentially can make by suing them.

#

At a former job, on a few occasions we went through our software stack, nerfing "open source" code that had questionable licensing, no written license, or non-binding legally invalid licensing, patent or other IP concerns that were not clear, etc. because our company was big enough to be worthwhile for someone to sue.

#

Or removing questionable potentially risky code from such projects or disabling it etc.

Here's a scenario and question for all 189000 of you mobile phone owning/using peeps... I do not and have never owned a mobile phone personally so no experience using them regularly myself, nor for the most part any of the problems one may encounter as a mobile user. A relative of mine only uses her mobile phone and she'll call me on it and leave a message, but when I go to return the call to her phone that she called from, 99% of the time I get an automated message telling me that the number I am calling is not in service. I've never encountered this problem with anyone else in 25+ years so it is pretty odd. She says she doesn't know why it happens but other people tell her it happens too. Sometimes the call will make it through to her and other times the out of service message. It doesn't seem to matter where she is physically located with her phone either. Any ideas what could cause this problem?

karmic tiger
#

made sure you don't have two numbers registered for her contact?

copper notch
#

If I had a problem like this with a mobile phone I would call the provider and hound them until they fixed whatever the problem was or cancel my service. She's too passive though.

copper notch
karmic tiger
#

hmm unsure then

copper notch
#

Just tested it and got through to her voicemail this time. Hung up, dialed the same number again and it says it is out of service LOL

civic quarry
#

if it is only happening to you, user error. if it is also happening with others she should call her cell phone carrier.

#

maybe your number is getting picked up by a spam filter or something

copper notch
#

yeah, makes sense. I'll have to nag her about it I guess, next time she calls me and gets me. She's kind of passive though so afraid to pursue things in case of uncomfortable situations. It's sure weird though, I haven't heard of a situation like this before and couldn't find anything really on Google either.

#

yeah, could be some anti-spam/fraud or whatever tech going awry perhaps. I wish they'd do that on my phone line though and cull 90% of my inbound calls. LOL

mossy whale
copper notch
#

Agreed, I'm going to tell her to do that, and even offer to do it for her if she's too shy to do it. She's gotta be missing a lot of calls from people, and there's not much one can do if you can't get a hold of her, unless connected via another mechanism like FB or something.

civic quarry
#

TBH I mostly stopped making phone calls years ago

#

maybe my mom but for the most part things are easier to just text

copper notch
#

Yeah, I rarely make calls nowadays. 95% of people I communicate with on a regular basis are on Discord and we prefer text/audio/video chat here now. Like 4% are on FB and we use messenger, and then 1% on phone. Also phone for business/health etc. calls.

#

But even then, still 98% of inbound calls are scams/fraud. Got a call from a friendly sounding lady claiming to be from my ISP and naming them on the call telling me of a problem with my account today. The same scam I get about 5 times a week, probably from the same call center on the other side of the planet. Asked me if I access the Internet from my phone, tablet, laptop or a computer. I told her I only use the Internet from my dishwasher.

#

He nice friendly ISP support voice changed into this angry rage and she told me off in the most violent way. I was actually surprised. Sometimes these people are rude but I was like wow.

#

Then I thought about how sad it is that people are struggling in life so much that the only thing they can think of to do to survive is to join a call center to commit global fraud, and feel good about themselves? It's really sad.

#

I wish our national telecommunications body (CRTC) would pass new laws to shut down the avenues for these calls to come through, blocking remote phone carriers or even entire countries who do not implement measures to prevent these scams from happening.

karmic tiger
#

cause like yeah, scam calls are a fucking pain, but the one you get aren't really the one responsible, they have a shit job where what they do ends up in two ways, either they get scammed, or they get rude

copper notch
#

While I love what is happening in the world of AI technologies and the good things it is going to bring in the future, I fear that it is going to bring a lot more scams and fraud along with it that scam a lot of people out of money etc. while appearing more believable than ever.

karmic tiger
#

so yeah I'd piss on the heads of the executives/managers of those scam things any day, but not the callers

copper notch
#

Yeah, I sometimes have tried to talk politely with them about what they are doing and how it is wrong. Usually they hang up on you or tell you off but sometimes they are polite and entertain the conversation in a friendly way and you can see that there is a real human there, even perhaps with a good heart, that has turned to doing this out of desparation and they feel bad about it.

#

I'd say when I've tried to take a call down that road, maybe 5% of the time you get someone like that.

karmic tiger
#

I mean, honestly, they know it's "wrong" but the wrong is imo not on them, it's on what forces them to take such a job

copper notch
#

But there are so many of these calls and it is such a time sink to try to save people from themselves that I usually just hang up or say I'm not interested and hang up or similar.

karmic tiger
#

and the hanging up is normal : they're payed by the call

copper notch
#

What's also sad is that some of the people have no idea they are a part of a scam outfit. For example, they call from time to time claiming to be from ADT security and trying to sell ADT products/services. I called ADT myself direct and talked to their security department before and they told me that they do not make cold calls or hire any call centers to do this for them and if you ever receive a call from someone claiming to be from ADT it is a scam.

civic quarry
#

I just don't answer calls from anyone not in my contacts

#

if it is really that important they will leave a message

karmic tiger
#

see that's the mistake

#

also my new phone has a delightful function where I just need to turn it over and it mutes the call

copper notch
#

So I got this lady call a few times and one time I just joked around for laughs until she hung up realizing I was just being a jokester. She wasn't rude or anything. But like 2 months later I got the same call, same lady's voice and recognized her. I had actually recorded my call with the ADT security guy in between, and I asked her if she was aware that she was calling illegitimately. She was not rude or anything but insisted it was legit and I told her that I had called ADT myself and they told me that they do not do business with call centers overseas or elsewhere and that any such calls are fraud and that I have a recording of being told this that I could play for her. She wanted to hear it so I played the recording which was a few minutes long.

#

She was surprised and coming to the realization that her job was not legitimate and she had no idea.

#

I gave her the phone number for ADT security to call and talk to them herself and she thanked me. Dunno what happened after that but we had a friendly conversation where it sounded like she got scammed herself into working there and had no idea it was a scam.

If one of the hardware vendors put out a product that you plug into a power cable in the PC, and it has a button on it you can turn on and off, and turning it off completely disabled every single LED on the motherboard, and on any connected peripherals, I'd pay $50 for it. Call it **NORGB AI Xtreem XT"

cunning pine
#

most RGB can be turned off though. albeit it requires either going into the BIOS or first installing the software for the product which is why you probably want a single device that can just be plugged in and does it without needing to do all that.

#

in my experience though, most products that require you to install software to change the RGB, have a memory chip and it saves what you did to the device itself so you could then uninstall the software afterwards.

copper notch
#

I disabled all the RGB stuff in my BIOS, but a single button that says "I am not into the RGB craze, I want my room dark and I never look inside my computer" would be just right up my alley.

#

and also says "And I don't want poorly written buggy RGB software to destabilize my computer and make it crash randomly"

Like ASUS' Armory Cringe or whatever it is called.

Overview. Astigmatism (uh-STIG-muh-tiz-um) is a common and generally treatable imperfection in the curvature of the eye that causes blurred distance and near vision. Astigmatism occurs when either the front surface of the eye (cornea) or the lens inside the eye has mismatched curves.

We recommend using Simple output mode for most streaming and recording needs. While advanced output mode allows for more fine-tuning of options, it does not guarantee better quality; in fact, it often results in lower quality/performance when settings are changed that should not be.

To change back to Simple output mode:

  1. In OBS Studio, click on Settings, then select Output
  2. Change Output Mode from Advanced to Simple
