Ditto for Microsoft account.

#

It is kind of annoying though, that we make accounts on these centralized services and they become a part of our digital lives and digital identities online, but we do not actually own or control anything, and with a swift move of a bad AI or machine learning algorithm or bot, or a bad human judgment or whatever, you're wiped out instantly with no reprieve.

#

Becoming a much bigger fan of decentralized services based on open source though as a result.

#

Got banned from Instagram one day, still no idea why. Hadn't posted anything or commented on anything that violated anything. Barely ever even used it.

#

Only thing I could think of is that I used Firefox development mode to use responsive design mode so my browser appeared as a mobile device because their website didn't have all features on desktop, so I used it to post a few videos in lieu of a mobile device. If that broke some law there, then I don't even want an account there.

#

What is kind of funny is that IG is owned by FB, and I use the same email address on both accounts, and they blocked me on IG but didn't ban my FB account "just to be safe". 🙂

#

Gotta wait for their next gen of AI admin bots to get rolled out for that. 🙂

Bloomberg reports that Intel's workforce currently stands at 110,000, at the time when the company is scheduled to report its quarterly earnings, and it is reported by sources across the internet that Intel plans to layoff 10,000 of its employees, but the divisions affected are currently unknown. Team Blue has already disclosed plans to implement a large-scale cost cutting policy, valued at a total of $10 billion by 2025, so the layoff wave indeed is a part of the firm's long-term plan.

#

so instead of issuing an RMA they are just firing ppl

#

that still dosnt fix the issue

#

In amd news

#

rumored prices are lower than last gen

copper notch
#

They'll lay off 50% more of them in the next 5 years, replacing them with AI anyway, but it'll be running on their own chips so it wont work right and they'll go bankrupt. </prediction>

karmic tiger
copper notch
#

Converting that to CAD, and rounding it up to the nearest "screw Canadians" nice marketing pricetag, it'll be $899 CAD

marsh helm
#

well the 9600x will be within 10% of the 7800x3d in games

#

and better multicore

#

the 9700x will be less of a gap

copper notch
#

I wonder what will be left of the ARC division.

lunar lake comes in sep

They can lop off Celestial/Druid development though in a heartbeat.

marsh helm
#

idk tho

#

i think intel will be forced to Recall

copper notch
#

They said they aren't going to recall. Unless there is a massive CA lawsuit, or FTC/DOJ one, they probably wont.

marsh helm
#

there needs to be one

marsh helm

they are mad that intel didnt say anything

#

#

copper notch
#

They sat on their laurels for years, and AMD drank milk.

marsh helm
#

yet still refused RMAS

#

now lunar lake has impressive performance targets

#

and doubles the npu power

#

but who the hell will be buying it

copper notch

They could always put out a 600W desktop CPU at 8GHz with 60 E-cores, that might work.

marsh helm
#

Intel is scheduled to report second-quarter earnings on Thursday, August. 1. Analysts project Intel to report flat revenue for the second quarter compared to the previous year. Wall Street estimates Intel’s sales will increase modestly during the second half of 2024 and increase 3% to $55.7 billion for 2024. That will mark Intel’s first annual revenue increase since 2021.

karmic tiger
marsh helm
#

they are also stealing expensive ppl from TSMC

#

for their not finished fab

#

sooo how many of those 1000s of people were fired to pay for that?

#

since 2023 intel has fired 15% of its ppl

#

if that report turns out to be true which we will know tomorrow

#

when intel puts out their earnings

#

if intel has to replace all of the cpus that have issues

#

it would wipe out all profits

#

for client

copper notch
#

Well, they do have one positive thing going for them though. AMD will be helping them going forward.

marsh helm
#

amd hired soo many ppl from intel

#

and so did nvidia

copper notch
#

They'll sell more CPUs so Intel doesn't have to sell as many, which means they wont have to recall as many faulty CPUs so it will save them money.

marsh helm
#

intel fired a lot of their experienced ppl

#

this issue isnt going away tho

#

like its only going to have more and more games that will have to put out reports that its the intel cpu

#

its going to keep happening for years

#

same with applications

#

and on top of that ppl will return their intel pcs the moment it ever bluescreens

copper notch
#

Even if Arrow Lake ends up decent, I can't see most businesses, partners, consumers that got screwed by Intel being all "Well, they totally screwed everyone last time but this time they'll be fine, I trust them"

marsh helm
#

theres 0 news of arrow lake

copper notch
#

I am seeing even die hard fanbois dumping Intel regularly lately.

marsh helm
#

and the QS leak was super boring

#

the 7800x3d beats it

copper notch
#

You watch, they'll fall hard, barely survive bankruptcy, then pick themselves back up from their bootstraps and invent a revolutionary new chip design.

marsh helm
#

yeah its a leak but its a QS

#

these are normally close to release copies

#

the E cores are very strong

#

around40% faster

#

but the P cores....

copper notch
#

I predict it'll be 1200W 9GHz, and they will launch the CPUs into low earth orbit to cool them in space, and use long range optical interconnects to communicate with people's PCs. You just have to install the laser system on your roof.

marsh helm
#

if you include the costs to FAB the client cpus

#

they havnt made a profit from client

#

in like 8 years

#

"Intel said its foundry business recorded an operating loss of $7 billion in 2023 on sales of $18.9 billion. That’s a wider loss than the $5.2 billion Intel reported in its foundry business in 2022 on $27.5 billion in sales."

#

that removes most of their profit margin

#

also amd new chips are super dense

#

AMD's Zen 5 chips pack in 8.315 billion transistors per compute die, a 28% increase in density. Something it did not do earlier.

copper notch
#

Looking forward to independent testing of Zen 5, should be interesting.

tall vapor
#

Cause companies tend to, uh, be succy

marsh helm
#

they have parts but

#

i bet

#

the rmas would have the same issues

#

i think all have the issue

copper notch
#

Well, in a way Intel is RMA'ing. RecoMmending AMD 🙂

tall vapor
#

yah, at which point it would be a "return&get money back" situation

#

which intel no like, of course

#

intel want good earnings call

tall vapor
marsh helm
#

just from verified reports

#

its in the billions of USD

#

just from the few companies that said stuff

tall vapor
#

well yeah

marsh helm
#

one of the biggest oems said it was around 2-3 million out of 8 million cpus

#

thats already 1 billion

#

if i was that company i would be mad

tall vapor
#

when ya got 2 generations of chips out there in the wild of which a huge percentage practially needs to be scrapped&money returned.... well yeah, that's well, uh.... how do I put this..... not great for intel's finances and reputation

#

so they aren't doing that

#

just downplaying it

marsh helm
#

and it dosnt matter what update intel does its not going to fix it

copper notch
#

This has to be the largest CPU defect ever in history

marsh helm
#

its going to get only worse

tall vapor
#

the microcode thingie will lead to them CPUs lasting long enough for the warranty to expire and then well that's it, intel got no trouble

marsh helm
#

90% of ppl wont know about the code stuff

#

and the ppl who do will HATE it

#

as its already cutting performance by 30% in some stuff from the lower watts

#

all of those server ppl were running not even on OC

tall vapor
marsh helm
#

just running stressfull workloads

copper notch
#

And AMD lowering the price of Zen 5 is like turning the screws under their fingernails too

marsh helm
tall vapor
marsh helm
#

but thats only because they didnt tell anyone

marsh helm
#

well amd does that to keep eyes on leakers sometimes

copper notch
marsh helm
#

amd said it was a performance issue

#

i dont see them lying about that

#

dosnt make sense to

copper notch
#

I haven't heard anything about AMD saying that, I recall them saying it was a quality control issue.

marsh helm
#

“We appreciate the excitement around Ryzen 9000 series processors. During final checks, we found the initial production units that were shipped to our channel partners did not meet our full quality expectations. Out of an abundance of caution and to maintain the highest quality experiences for every Ryzen user, we are working with our channel partners to replace the initial production units with fresh units. As a result, there will be a short delay in retail availability. The Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X processors will now go on sale on August 8th and the Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X processors will go on-sale on August 15th. We pride ourselves in providing a high-quality experience for every Ryzen user, and we look forward to our fans having a great experience with the new Ryzen 9000 series.”

#

ah your right

tall vapor
#

Yes.

#

And Ryzen 7 CPUs being labelled as ryzen 9 clearly be a qc fail

marsh helm
#

it does hint of performance stuff tho

tall vapor
#

where

marsh helm
#

and not all chips had that issue

copper notch
#

I don't see anything at all hinting at performance issues.

tall vapor
#

I mean it could be that some actually ryzen 7 chips ended up in ryzen 9 boxes due to that mislabeling stuff maybe?

marsh helm
#

i see experience a lot

tall vapor
copper notch
#

I wonder if they had AI label the CPUs.

tall vapor
#

or sth silly like that

#

could be as easy as a typo that nobody caught

copper notch
#

Maybe they'll rename Zen 6 to rAIzen

tall vapor
#

f no

marsh helm
#

next zen is last zen afaik

#

the chart ends

copper notch
#

There's been info leaks of Zen 7. It would make no sense whatsoever for AMD to end the highly successful Zen branding.

terse helm
#

the chart ending does not mean anything

tall vapor
#

yeah maybe they don't put out a chart that contains info from 10 years out in the future, huh?

#

🤦‍♀️

terse helm
#

making an infinite chart just does not make sense

marsh helm
copper notch
#

You rebrand when you are failing and need to refresh your image to attract consumers, or when you have something radically new and want to differentiate it as a big new thing.

marsh helm
#

i dont think amd will have a zen 11000 series

copper notch
#

Like their new "AI" branded mobile chips for example

copper notch
#

Nobody knows really what they will do every single generation, until they do it. But the most plausible thing is that they continue the same pattern they've done in the past, until they don't.

Damn, the open source AI stuff has been advancing a lot this year. I'm now getting great results from Meta Llama 3.1 and Google Gemma 2 running locally on my slow ass laptop, and at speeds that are not as good as the big cloud AIs but are way faster and higher quality than most of the other smaller company cloud AIs. With a laptop with no AI acceleration. Getting 17.5t/s on Gemma and 7.5t/s on Llama. It's insane... I used to get 1.5-2t/s on Llama 3 a few weeks ago.

open rune
#

I would assume it's some kind of automation being stupid and the company is probably so big there is no practical way to reach out for support for account or registration issues like that

Sure there are people who do wrong/bad things and have no personal responsibility or accountability and are in denial and feel rules are suggestions, but they seem to be easy to spot in the crowd IMHO. So many people get nuked by bad algorithms these days with no recourse.

little glacier
#

I'm a bit skeptical that it's automatic, since I did have to wait 24 hours for the decision, and I doubt that automation is this slow.

copper notch
#

If it's manual, then probably some human searched Google for the person's name, found one political statement or opinion they made on Orkut or Friendster 15 years ago and thought "I'll show them! DENIED I have the power! You have no recourse! LOLZ"

wary holly
#

If I had to guess, someone was banned by IP range for CP or some such, and you were in that IP range.

copper notch
#

I suppose netblock related problems could be an issue also, however residential etc. Internet is in known ranges and companies know dynamic IPs exist. I myself am not on a dynamic ever changing IP. I'm on a dynamically assigned but constant IP.

little glacier
#

My home internet has static IP, and both my grandma and little brother successfully created their accounts here.

wary holly

Then maybe your name doesn't look like a real name to them.

copper notch
#

My Microsoft account got blocked randomly one day. I looked into it and had no recourse that was worth the exchange of time for the value of recovering the account so I did not bother. My nephew took my info and looked into it on his own and told me he thinks he knew what happened. He said that if I do not have 2FA enabled on my account (I did not), and someone tries to hack the account enough times whether they are successful or not, Microsoft may lock the account for suspicious activity in order to be safe. He gave me instructions on how to contact Microsoft to get the account reenabled and confirmed this whole issue with them.

#

So it might be as simple as calling Microsoft and fixing the issue in 20 minutes and having my account back.

copper notch
#

But there's one problem.

#

I don't want to do that, and don't care about it, and am not going to spend the time to pray that Microsoft permits me in their all powerfulness to have the privilege of having my glorious account back.

It is a matter of principle for me.

little glacier

# wraith thunder how do i change mkv to mp4?

Remuxing allows you to copy video and audio from one MKV/FLV to another video container format for use in players and editors that do not support MKV/FLV. This process is safe, lossless, and takes seconds.

To remux any recordings made with OBS Studio:

  1. In OBS Studio, click the File menu → Remux Recordings
  2. Click on the … (three dots) button, then select your MKV or FLV file
  3. Click on the Remux button

#

that seems like a long time to fix

#

they didnt tell their enterprise ppl of the issue

#

left heart
#

let's just consider the imaginary scenario of if a foreign object found its way into a vacuum chamber, started degassing, and it took until their internal failure analysis lab found it in a completed chip, then they checked other sample chips and didn't find the oxidation, why would they stop production?

#

no idea what caused it in the first place, and obviously their "screening" was insufficient if those chips made their way to customers, but it's not infeasible to see why they wouldn't need to stop production...

marsh helm
#

i guess they might of just made a TON of 13 and 14gen before it was fully cleaned out

so even what looks to be new retail boxes could be from the time it wasnt as clean

the oxidation issue was clearly stated to be a 13th gen only issue

opaque halo

Something die in the range hood vent? That many flies isn't a good sign

copper notch
#

Who knows... In past years I found swarms of flies in the basement, baby flies, so they were clearly breeding in small spaces down there where it was cool. Probably the same thing again.

#

Not much you can do about it except use fly paper, a fly swatter, or microwave oven technology.

opaque halo
#

or hire and exterminator 🙂

copper notch
#

All food waste goes into used ziplock bags in the freezer and then taken right to the garbage bins, so there is no food or other things attracting them.

#

What I think actually happens, is I do some laundry, forget and leave the laundry room light on, come upstairs and turn the main basement light on, then if there are flies in here and I go to bed, all the lights are off but they can see a light coming from under the basement door and go down there and reproduce like rabbits.

wary holly
#

Flies reproduce much faster. I once saw them mating and tried to swat them off, they flew off without, ahem, "dismounting".

copper notch
#

There is another way to catch them easily too, a special DIY flytrap I could make. Basically it is a 2L pop bottle or similar, and you darken the top half of it by taping a garbage bag to it, and put an apple core or 2 in it with a bit of cider vinegar. Make this simple contraption that goes over the top in such a way that they smell food in there, and they go inside, but they are attracted to light so they do not go back into the dark side and can't see to get back out, so they get stuck in the pop bottle and just die in there. You can catch 100s of flies like that. YouTube has tutorials on making them. Great for camps.

copper notch
#

About once a year I get inundated with one insect or another for a few days/week or so. There are tutorial videos on YouTube on how to catch/kill just about anything with simple household items etc. tho so it is not really hard to get rid of things if you do your research.

#

I've gotten rid of swarms of flies, fruit flies, GNATS ARE THE WORST FFS, earwigs, ants, spider mites.

I wouldn't wish gnats on my worst enemies during a war.

A couple of days later I was sitting at my PC and hearing this "chirp" sound that kind of sounded like some kind of rechargeable device with a dead battery using the remaining fumes of juice to alert you that it needed recharging, except I don't own anything like that.

#

So I was like "what's that friggen noise", and went in the direction it was coming from and found the sticky trap had a mouse in it. It was dark so I didn't notice the details. I picked up the trap with a pair of pliers and didn't look at it, tossed it inside an empty pizza box on the table and went about my business for a while. Then I kept hearing that chirping noise and went to look and WTF... A MOUSE WITH NO EARS OR FACE!

LOL

I googled that and found out what it was, then watched NatGeo

He died a few hours later from starvation, so that was that.

Gotta eat every 4 hours or you die, then don't step on a sticky trap dude or you're skrewed.

plugin compatability?

sweet anchor
#

Oh boy, you've done it now Christopher.

copper notch
#

The TL;DR answer, is I have a highly complex OBS configuration with hundreds of scenes developed since around 2017 with lots of custom made visual FX, using various plugins, shaders, scripts and other stuff, and OBS over the years has changed how various things work which makes a lot of the things I developed break or produce incorrect color, incorrect alpha or other problems. To make it all work on current OBS requires spending dozens if not hundreds of hours reprogramming a lot of stuff which I intend to do eventually but it is not a life priority. 🙂

#

So I have various different use cases for OBS, and the ones that are not complex, I use newer OBS releases, but for compatibility with old content/fx etc. I still have older releases.

#

I can pipe the output of one OBS release to an input source in a newer release in order to take advantage of newer CODECs, platform integrations etc. if/when needed.

Finished the video... that was scathing. I can't see how Intel can turn this PR nightmare around.

Just about everywhere people talk about CPUs that I'm in, even people who are or have been Intel fans or fanbois for a long time are making comments that they're going with AMD in their new build. Ooof.

I can see Dell and other companies prying the "Intel Inside" stickers off their PCs and laptops and hoping nobody notices.

You know what else is unusual, usually with controversies like this is when the super fanbois come out and go ultra defensive. It seems they are mostly dead silent.

#

They be sitting there thinking "uh, I got nothing man..." 🙂

Or, they are unable to comment on anything because their Intel CPU cooked

drowsy mason
#

I think the fanboys are less excited rn because there's no performance wins on the horizon (Arrow Lake is more about efficiency it seems), hasn't been all that close for gaming since Ryzen 7000X3D series really... When nothing to brag about, why stick around for losing this brag-fight? And people really don't like their electronics burning up, so... Not much to defend.

copper notch
#

indeed

drowsy mason
#

I like my intel stuff, but I was always put off by refreshing it so many times for marginal gains and never putting it properly on sale for 13th and 14th gen, so I didn't end up getting that, and I'm not affected by the burn-ups. Plus the "more E-cores" thing rubbed me a bit the wrong way somehow, couldn't shake a suspicion of them.

marsh helm
#

i was watching and said wow thats a lot and noticed i was just 40% through

#

This is pretty much what im seeing from other sources

copper notch
#

AMD should release Zen 5 with every CPU $50 cheaper than what rumours are expecting. Kill shot.

silver fable
#

I have no brand loyalty when it comes to CPUs. I buy what seems to be the best at the time. I've owned Intel, AMD, and Cyrix, depending on the time frame.

marsh helm
copper notch
#

The profit margins on Ryzen are pretty big, so AMD could totally afford it, and make back in market share anyway

marsh helm
#

its not like its worse

#

amd margins are 30% on the older stuff

#

probably less on the new ones

drowsy mason
#

I was able to get a better price/perf buying 12th gen when I did compared to Ryzen 7000, even if just by a bit, and their decade-plus-old CPUs are holding up okay if you have a use-case for old parts, etc. (But I am not going to have much point saying that, it's stating the obvious and doesn't change that they haven't protected customers from this latest thing at all so far.) So that's about the extent of my "fanboy's case for intel."

copper notch
#

Intel's BOM costs are higher so AMD can do a price war and cause Intel to lose both marketshare and make basically no money.

marsh helm
#

amd already has them bet on price

#

why do they need to lower their costs even more?

#

the 7800x3d is $300

#

amd dosnt see their older stuff as worse

#

they see it as more budget options

#

you get what you pay for with amd

copper notch
#

They don't. But if they lower their prices even more they still make a lot of money due to their profit margins being high, while it puts pressure on Intel to have to lower their prices too, which makes Intel's profit margins very small. So Intel either has to lower prices and make very little profit, or keep prices higher and lose market share. Either way it is a kill shot strategy AMD could use, and one could argue that they are already doing it with the prospective Zen 5 prices being rumoured.

marsh helm
#

marsh helm
#

its going to be 3-4 months before its on shelves

#

if they launch in dec then it really wont even be in stock til jan week 2

copper notch
#

Yeah, enough time for X3D to drop too, with its new features as well.

marsh helm
#

soo by then they can drop prices $50

#

and have the 3d announced or out

copper notch
#

yeah, probably

#

$50-100 depending on sku

marsh helm
#

last time intel released their cpu during dec they had like 1 day of stock

#

and the rest was moved over by boat which means second week of jan

#

because of lunar new year and holiday transportation fees

#

theres some rumors that amd wont have full boats of the chips till sep

#

so like 2 weeks

#

it takes around a month to move a boat of cpus to a port and onto shelves

copper notch
#

It's funny... I was talking to a friend last year who said Intel has nothing to worry about because they're too big to fail and the US gov't needs them for government/military as they are US-made, so the government wouldn't let Intel fail hard. Truth is, military ditched Intel in a bid. Also, the idea that Intel's processors are made in the US means something is laughable because they're mostly made at TSMC now too, plus the motherboards, most of the other chips, capacitors, other components in a whole system are all made in Asia as well.

marsh helm
#

i dont think ppl understand

#

SAMSUNG is also here

#

has a working fab

copper notch
#

Yeah, and TSMC is building in US also

marsh helm
#

and military needs 10nm and 14nm

#

they dont use or need 3nm

#

it dosnt matter at all to them

#

before amd bought xilinix

#

xilinix sent up a spy sat to spaace

copper notch
#

Pretty sure the gov't/mil do not want 50% failure rates on their hardware too. 🙂

marsh helm
#

you wanna guess the nm size on that?

#

and thats SPACETECH

#

they dont need or order or want the advance nodes

#

and china is already at 7nm lvl

#

can produce cpus at about intel 10th gen i5

#

you dont need anything faster for most offices

#

i think intel has a lot to worry about

I should change that to computer tech in general, since the Mercury/Apollo didn't have centralized CPUs at the time ( since they didn't exist ).

they also be building a fab in Germany rn, for example. That one be 22nm for now though, because they wanna keep their highend stuffs in Taiwan tho.

nvidia said they use ai to make chips sooo

tall vapor
marsh helm
#

whats the production amount of intels foundry?

tall vapor
#

which one

#

they got a whole lot of fabs

marsh helm
#

Intel says they needs $25B to $30B of capex per 10,000 wafers per week for their new fabs. TSMC has stated they requires about $42B of capex per 10,000 wafers for their 3nm in Arizona even after the “cost overruns”. We are unsure what the delta is for Intel versus TSMC on these numbers as the TSMC figures include site prep, shell, and tooling. Regardless, taking Intel’s numbers at face value, this is a huge wall given Intel always needs 150,000+ wafers per month of capacity on the leading edge to remain competitive in volumes with TSMC.
