fun fact #2:
the second deadliest incident to occur at the McDowell Energy Complex was a 4 1/2 week long humanitarian crisis in September of 1985 called "The Underground War"
triggered by shocking discoveries in Northwestern's alternative nuclear power the Takeyoshi Liberation Front, a primarily Asian eco-revolutionist group funded by the DPRK initiated a massive siege on the facility, quickly sweeping thru the Entrance Zone and breaching the Obrysum Seal where they fought over several days against Dept. Of Security officers, Elite Response Division units and eventually the Minnesota State Police, Minnesota National Guard and Illinois National Guard. the rebels managed to get 3 corridors away from the Cautus Warhead which they had planned to detonate before being pushed back to the surface by a detachment of the Illinois National Guard where they were all either shot attempting to escape or arrested by the state police

(concept) Fun fact #3:
Callista Richwell, daughter of Lewis Richwell, was actually the murderer of Jeremiah McDowell. McDowell had been in the hospital due to gallbladder issues and surgery, when Callista Richwell at approximately 11:37 PM stabbed McDowell in his bed while he was sleeping. She also killed a nurse who witnessed the murder. She did this because she ended up as CFO of the company and eventually the news of Richwell's murder got to her. Boiling with rage, she drove over to McDowell's hospital, said she was a visitor, and then proceeded to murder McDowell. She ran away without being caught, but evidence of her presence was found and she was charged 2 weeks after the crime, and pleaded guilty.
why is this becoming a lore showdown
well
didnt McDowell pass away to pancreatic cancer?
one sec
lemme change this a bit
one of the cargo ships were detained by Iraqi forces, souring the likely already very poor relationship the US and Iraq had before the Gulf War began
The Department of Outer Security and the Elite Response Division later launched a raid on the port the ship was being held in, however they could not get the vessel out of the port before artillery began firing upon the ship and it eventually sank
which technically they were instructed to allow the ship to sink because then it'd be more insurance money
it seemed very on-chord considering in canon it's supposed to be the
prototype of the evil corporation
the opus magnum of vile companies
no care for anything
but money
Well
McGowan tried to save the company but failed
McDowell put the company in its coffin
Newman did all these schemes and started hammering the nails in the coffin
and the Lake Pepin Disaster would've been what buried the grave
Then MacQuoid tried to save the company and redirect it back in the right direction but that still ultimately didnt work considering theres still remainder groups and corrupt execs no matter what
MacQuoid tried to dig up the grave but couldnt find the coffin
(concept unless said otherwise) Fun fact #4:
MacQuoid in 2019 began plans for a new reactor with actual safety systems omg wow but the executive board didn't like the idea, either because they wanted it to explode for money or they were just paranoid from the Lake Pepin disaster. After this, MacQuoid in 2020 permitted bioresearch in an attempt to get into the biofuel business, which would later end up succeeding and Richwell National Lab would be born in 2024, using a large pump system to produce biofuel. Northwestern made tons off of their new biofuel products, although in 2029 a malfunction caused the facility to flood, ending all biofuel production and causing Northwestern's stocks to plummet once again. It also did not help that MacQuoid died on May 6th, 2029 of natural causes, leading to one of Newman's sons to take over as CEO. And so, like father, like son.
So rn for development it's just me, gim and nwo?
Me doing music gim doing lore and nwo building the gamem
sort of
Which important character do yall think had the most brutal death
in or out of the lake pepin disaster
'The hardest part about everything that has happened is that the people we cared about, the people we loved, the people we liked, the people who got so close to us.. were gone in an instant. And we couldn't explain why... they just.. disappeared. The people we made memories with... they became memories.' - Grayson MacQuoid
i think anybody that got evaporated by the reactor has a pretty brutal death
have you tried being Jacob Ross?
Jacob Ross was the MEC security lieutenant
when the power laser exploded, a piece of piping pinned him into a pool of spilling coolant below, causing him to slowly drown and freeze to death
thats
not nice
@hexed torrent so two things
do you want the dialogue music to repeat at all before it starts slowing down? and what do you think of the outline of the title screen music
could you DM me stuff too
im just curious about all the music and stuff
music is key in a game
yeah
no
ok what about title music
i like the title music outline
ok
ill probably record the melody myself
ive got a 3 day window after june 10 to record the melody so i plan on doing it then
Newman: Pride
MacQuoid: Terror
Heuermann: Shock
Fremont: Guilt
Ross: Panic
Literally the lake pepin disaster in a nutshell
insurance fraud?
bc if not i do not have any ideas how the company could get money
funding supplied by the Israeli government
Well
After Newman’s son took over he straight up rigged the flooded biofuel facility with explosives, blew the whole thing to shreds, then claimed the biofuel had exploded in an accident no one knew about the flood prior in the public and got a whole lot of money off insurance for that
People who knew what happened either kept it secret or tried to speak out, but were killed to prevent anyone finding out
So yeah
After Grayson MacQuoid died, Newman’s son, Jason Newman took over
And so
Northwestern went from being a decent company in the early 2000s, 2010s, and most of the 2020s, back to being a vile, murderous company that only cared about profit
why tgo
should be noted that after Newman’s son took over he immediately began funding plans to provide Central America with Penrose energy, essentially beginning development of the PIR 02
compared to the PIR 01 however it was several hundred times more safe
so newman’s son was evil but not 1990s northwestern evil
he just wanted to restore the prior image Northwestern had in the 20th century
A reliable power company providing energy that costs a penny
the thing that made Jason Newman evil is that if you whined about anything, he'd simply kill you
not too much different from McDowell
he also used about 20% of all company profit for personal use
@hexed torrent what will startup overload look like
overhead panels bluescreen and essentially master system doesn’t receive the stop signal
meaning the lasers stay on ignition mode until the system recovers
1 min 30s
perfect
there’s also a 50/50 chance that the master system will either recover the overload and scram the reactor or the reactor will enter a meltdown
also i just now noticed i didn’t tell anyone this
there is a difference between scramming the penrose reactor and purging it
scramming the reactor essentially forcibly ejects the fuel capsules which almost instantaneously stalls the combustion in the confinement structure
purging the reactor essentially sends waves of energy into the combustion chamber to trigger the discharge bearings which releases quite a bit of pressure in the chamber
so that the fuel capsules can safely eject
In the meltdown, after scramming was lost the personnel tried to purge the reactor, but this ended up doing more harm than good since the heat began to melt the reactor structure, and when the discharge bearings released all the pressure the reactor confinement basically began to fall apart, all the energy inside compressing into a singularity in the middle of the chamber.
Then when the reactor confinement fell after the hydraulics got unstable, the singularity burst out and there was basically an extremely volatile orange energy ball in the middle of the chamber
That collapsed and caused a huge energy shockwave, resulting in a huge explosion.
lore
Fun fact:
Control Room supervisor Christian Darkwell during the meltdown was requested by Gertrude Fremont to help her pry out the fuel cells. Darkwell declined and warned Fremont that it was a death trap. Darkwell then evacuated the facility and survived. After learning of Fremont's demise, he felt EXTREME guilt, thinking that he could have stopped her and saved her, instead of running away to let her die, thinking his words would be enough.
i was writing it and hit enter one sec

Christian Darkwell is also going to be a very prominent character post-lake pepin disaster
He had alot of involvement with the investigation of the incident and purposefully took down Northwestern's stocks, but thats a story for another time
Darkwell also didn't evacuate the facility via helicopter
like most people
he actually fled by car, and managed to evade the explosion, although the shockwave sent him tumbling and gave him permanent scars and injuries
At this point we already have more lore than QSERF
at this point yall ahve fried my brain on what's even going on anymore
many major roadways leading away from the facility around the time that evacuations started to be issued were already backed up for several miles
mainly because during the meltdown the containment dome caught fire and began imploding on itself
essentially people made the assumption that something terrible is happening at the facility (something terrible was about to happen) and everyone began to flee en masse
it could’ve been very likely that Darkwell had to manage to survive with cars being flung everywhere
also fun fact
during earlier stages of development one of the ways of escaping the meltdown would’ve been stealing a car and fleeing via road
hard to script or just scrapped
i don’t actually know why i scrapped it
maybe because it would probably mean people would endlessly pester me about making drivable cars meaning i’d have to actually fully make the developed road system the facility has
thats because heres a surprise
the people dont know that scripting
is VERY hard
same with modelling
and that devs cant
just snap their fingers
and make some cool new game mechanic appear
anyways
Darkwell was EXTREMELY lucky not to get smacked by flying cars
it wasnt even his car
he literally smashed the window of a random car GTA style and hotwired it to escape the facility
primarily because most parking garages were in total havoc
Also question
will lore characters be in the MEC as characters you can interact with like in QSERF?
hopefully
also evacuation route that i’ll further develop to be on a poster in some corners of the facility
probably visitor areas, lobbies, security offices and the Cautus warhead containment
hm
im just gonna say it
that route didnt save anyone
except darkwell, even though technically he didnt follow any routes
he just drove at 5x the speed limit until his car got flipped like a pancake from the shockwave
still though
cool stuff
i might make a custom model for darkwell’s car
lol
is there literally just gonna be a random car speeding out of the MEC at 90 mph ingame
i will make animated sequences that are lore accurate
eg: darkwell’s car slamming thru a barrier gate going 110 mph
or fremont prying out fuel cells
ross getting crushed by a pipe and falling
other notable personnel fleeing/dying
etc
actually i might model cars for the major characters in general
fremont, heuermann, darkwell, etc?
prob
Fun fact:
Darkwell plummeted Northwestern's stocks purposefully after the incident by killing the CFO by mailing him anthrax coated documents.
He then proceeded to expose all of Northwestern's schemes to the public by auctioning important financial & transaction files containing many atrocious acts, many of which quickly hit the news. He also was able to impersonate the CFO by sending out termination slips to many corrupt financial officers. By exposing northwestern, noone payed for their energy, causing their stocks to plummet.
apparently PTSD makes people murderous
David Newman
Assassinated a lot of people
Sank ships for insurance
Blew up McDowell Energy Complex just for insurance while it was operating, killed hundreds
He was sentenced to life in prison but the previous COO and new CEO Grayson MacQuoid poisoned Newman in his prison cell via his prison meals because of his anger towards Newman
suprised he didn't get the death penalty
macquoid gave him his own death penalty
yes, but from the court
he did plead guilty
they wanted the International Criminal Court to try him for crimes against humanity
but they didnt
he did get tried by the supreme court of the U.S though, yes
doesen't the supreme court not try people?
yes they do
he must have appealed up to there tbf
The supreme court doesnt do it often but they were directly involved with Newman's trial
ah
he had done a disservice to the entire nation
how dare you associate him with me
jesus
MacQuoid wasnt bad
he was actually a very moral person who wanted to convert Northwestern into a decent company again
he was one of the few executives against Newman
primarily because Newman gave huge gifts of money and other expensive gifts to the executives
but MacQuoid was moral
infact the reason the plan to claim insurance from the accident went wrong is because MacQuoid and former executive Levi Van Dijk ratted out Newman to the state government
he became CEO after Newman and converted the company back to being rather decent
and allowed bioresearch, eventually mass producing biofuel
he also fired all corrupt executives and employees
the only reason he killed Newman once he rose to power was because of sheer anger and guilt
Funny fun fact:
When Darkwell hotwired the car, 'The Final Countdown' was playing on the radio
im bored so i wrote this
anyways now to write an actual lore section
Fun fact:
Security lieutenant Jacob Ross' final radio transmission which was able to be recorded (the facility recorded all radio transmissions) was 'Listen, Jobs. I won't be alive next time you see me. I know I'm dying. But if I can save everyone, or just buy some time... it's worth my life. Tell my family I love them, but this is the end of me. And the end of the facility. So I'm sorry.'
just something to emphasize the tragedy of the situation
lots of final radio transmissions
Fremont's final transmission was: 'I ain't smart for doing this, guys, but even if I die, just make sure you survive. Run for your life.'
Virgil Miller's final transmission was: 'Well, the facility's gone. chuckle I haven't seen an explosion this big since good old vietnam-' heavy thud and ringing noise as the helicopter blades whir and it goes static
miller deserved it
anyways
fun fact: when the McDowell Energy Complex exploded radiation detectors aboard the Soviet built, Russian operated Mir space station recorded a sudden spike in radiation that lasted 0.0215 seconds and several cosmonauts aboard the station reported seeing a "short, concerningly bright flash over North America"
after which ROSCOSMOS forwarded this information to NASA
implying that the Russian government had found out the Lake Pepin Disaster happened before the US government did
administrative personnel get visually upset when you bring up the crate
whats wrong with the crate
Epsilon 8 for this game should just be skibidi toilet being waterboarded
i dont think theres an epsilon 8 for this game
besides the fact the incident itself was purposeful
there is indeed an equivelant to Epsilon-8 in Northwestern Corporation, they just don't do what you think they'd do
?
what is it
they experiment in interdimensional travel using something called a Etheric Multiparticle Transmaterializer
that is actually how 'the crate' came to be and why admins get visibly upset when it's brought up
classified
nobody would really know except Newman and MacQuoid and neither were willing to tell anyone
MacQuoid got visibly nervous whenever someone discussed it or asked him about it, but I imagine Newman just got annoyed
as not only did this violate the Moon Agreement of 1979, it also violated several FCC regulations because of how much electromagnetic interference came from it
Storage area near the bottom of the facility
It actually somehow rematerialized in southern Argentina
this thing aint from our world
well duh
It may have been recovered later
like outer security had discovered an electromagnetic disturbance in the area which it had rematerialized extremely similar to when it was brought here
and in 2001 it was recovered and locked away in a warehouse, all documents relating to it's return were locked up/destroyed by MacQuoid
they were originally concerned that the destruction of the Penrose Reactor would've triggered a chain reaction that eventually resulted in portals opening to other realities in random areas
which take it as you wish could be a really weird interaction
or a really deadly interaction
black mesa 2.0 couldve happened right then and there
Infact, outer security was deployed to the north and south poles as it was estimated if there were any disturbances, they would likely appear near those areas
some other items from the same reality were spat out by the EMT
a person was actually spat out, they were immediately shot afterwards, although an autopsy later revealed that they were infact just a regular human, possibly teleported there due to the electromagnetic disturbances
eg: a severely damaged control panel, a tearway calendar currently on August of 1985, an intercom speaker, a broken computer monitor
the control panel was taken by the research team to attempt to bring the panel to an operable condition and scrape any info off of it
Roland Marston, the director of the experiment, noted that it seemed to connect to a machine off-world, somewhere in the galaxy infact
This may relate to multiple strange images of a large black dot being spotted on the south pole of Uranus
All documents relating to such experiment were restricted to executive clearance only
Marston himself was actually terminated after the experiment with the good old anthrax slip
I know what they should do
They should water board the skibidi toilet
McGowan would be disappointed of you
Is McGowan gen alpha? Does he edge to skibidi toilet?
actually the greatest generation
💀 brother what
he died of injuries from ww2 bro
Oh I was thinking you were using greatest as an adjective
Not like
Actual greatest generation
i meant actual greatest generation
Yeah I get it
Fun fact:
In 2029, before Grayson MacQuoid's death, he wanted a man named Roger Stillman to take over. Stillman was the COO, however, Stillman died of a burst appendix, and Jason Newman took over as COO as the CFO did not want to rise through the ranks, which is why he rose to CEO. Originally, MacQuoid did not at any costs want Newman's son to take over, but it happened anyways.
currently working on a trello page for MEC
i was randomly typing new lore and i just got jumpscared by this
anyways go on
because atm i'm considering looking for people to help with scripting
considering i know barely anything about lua
that is the one part i suck at
including modelling and sound design too
im not the best game dev
and i am not willing to spend 46 weeks learning lua
noone is
except people who are willing to do it
but still
hiring devs can be painful
considering they almost always need payment of some kind
that too
and its just sometimes hard to guide people to do what you want
payment's going to be VERY tricky to do in early dev stages
at the start i was considering putting this off until i got a job to provide developers with actual robux payouts
well payment isnt the only issue
you cant really always direct them around, its hard to make them do exactly what you want
im in a few dev recruiting servers i mean
i could DM you the links to them but its tough luck sometimes
imo in theory how i plan it i'd model stuff and they'd script the features in the stuff
that does work too
i mean
scripting is pretty straightforward
so thats actually prob the best idea
anyways
Fun fact:
The fuel cells for the Penrose reactor were made of a metal alloy codenamed 'Blackwater'. The fuels cells were made via fuel machines where the liquid alloy was placed into a container, and the hyper-active energy inside of 'Blackwater' is extracted and neutralized, creating a safe energy fuel that is combined with plasma to create alternate fusion.
not exactly in love with this concept but you tell me what you think
fun fact
i originally planned to find an 80s-90s song to use for the MEC's main menu and elevator music
similar to how QSERF uses Nightshift by The Commodores
is there any in universe CFO that I should know of?
random question
i was gonna make a CFO concept but then i didnt know whether you already had lore for that
i can make like an instrumental version of it if you want
Fun fact:
The designer of the Penrose reactor was Elizabeth Cornwall. Cornwall became reactor maintenance director. Cornwall died in the incident by attempting to purge the reactor but sadly ended up sealing Penrose's inevitable doom, causing her to be sucked into and killed by the singularity that ensued.
Gertrude Fremont joined Northwestern Corporation in 1982, when the Penrose Reactor was essentially complete and was just awaiting to be powered on
So this would'nt really make sense
a man named Raymond Heath helped with a majority of the science surrounding the Penrose Reactor but died before its official development started in 1969
so logically Heath would make the science behind it and Cornwall would actually design it
if the blackwater concept is canon (which it prob isnt but just asking) did he invent the alloy or just find a way to extract its energy?
He invented the alloy
Albeit only the inner structure & pipe lining of the Penrose Reactor used Blackwater
If the entire thing was made out of Blackwater it would've became far too expensive to build and maintain
Blackwater is naturally a mercury-like liquid, so did they find a way to solidify it?
if they did, it would be tougher than all natural metals
hence why they wouldve used it
if i didnt make that clear enough srry-
They found out by mixing crushed obsidian pigment and a special titanium alloy that the metal's melting point skyrocketed from 350 degrees F to nearly 3.5 million
dang
anyways gtg uh more stuff later
The Penrose Reactor ran EXTREMELY hot so it made sense
fair enough
The usual temperature the Penrose Reactor safely operates at is between 95,000 and 280,000K
And just before the hydraulic melted during the meltdown the Penrose Reactor was running at roughtly 2.9 million K
taking a short break because i'm trying to apply for engineer but i'm stuck
no i don't need help and to my correct remembrance i can't ask for help
i keep failing my corporate applications idk what im doing wrong
Fun fact:
Elizabeth Cornwall designed the Penrose reactor in 1979, and construction began in 1980, and finished in 1982. It was started up on November 30th, 1982. Cornwall during the meltdown actually COULD HAVE saved the reactor if she had purged it sooner, before the reactor had hit 3M degrees kelvin, but because of the fact that it had heated up so much, the 'Blackwater' alloy had absorbed enough heat to completely melt and fall apart upon the pressure release. The energy formed a bright singularity which sucked Cornwall along with all the reactor staff remaining in the control area in through the control room windows and spaghettified her, killing her.
The Penrose Reactor's construction began in 1980 and was finished in 1982
It was started up on November 30th of the same year
edited
In fact the Penrose Reactor was supposed to turn 10 years old on July 14th, 1992 and Northwestern planned to hold a homecoming with the various scientists that helped with the Penrose Reactor
Something that never happened because the reactor, the facility and everything around it had been destroyed only 16 days before
Cornwall was actually supposed to get a special toast for her because of her efforts to design and construct it
a toast she never got
There was also a 10-day window between the McDowell Energy Complex's completion and the Penrose Reactor being turned on for the first time
The facility itself was designed by Newman
the design of the warhead deep within the facility was top secret and restricted to Site Director+
Both McDowell and Newman
Majority McDowell considering the facility's construction began in 1971
and then he gets diagnosed with pancreatic cancer
gets stabbed by Callista Richwell for revenge
(she honestly did a service since he wouldve died anyways)
and newman takes over
Newman designed Executive Order/Protocol Cautus, which only Heuermann and all the executives knew about
Heuermann himself still wasnt allowed near or in the warhead though, and due to his knowledge of what was within the complex and the disaster he was terminated and killed
the Takeyoshi Liberation Front actually knew about the Cautus Warhead as well however all attempts to spread this information publicly were very rapidly squashed
Newman quickly denied all of it
and Heuermann and the other executives rapidly denied it as well
they also paid for secrecy from the online media
It should be noted that Heuermann knew about the plan to blow up the MEC and constantly protested against the plan citing the “extreme ecological damage, loss of human life and damage to Northwestern’s image that would follow”
hence another reason why he was quickly killed off after the incident
Fun fact:
If the assassination plan for MacQuoid had followed through, it is more than likely that Northwestern would have gotten way with the plan to blow up the MEC and would still be operating corruptly and they would have gotten all the insurance
MacQuoid got lucky, which is the entire reason why Northwestern was saved
MacQuoid in 1991 was innocent and felt that Newman was a powerful figure to be respected, but MacQuoid in 1992 was a rebellious man who knew of Newman's plots and wouldn't stop until Newman was ejected and paid for his crimes
Another fun fact:
The Lake Pepin Disaster was on the same date as Christian Darkwell's birthday.
also something related to the game itself
a majority of facility personnel will have teleporter devices similar to how QSERF employees have pip-boy teleporters except it would be an actual tablet that you'd have on a belt
think like the pip-pad mod in FO4
would mcgowan be proud of macquoid
fun fact: before McDowell passed away and the facility was renamed in his honor the complex would've been known as the Wabasha Energy Complex
VoCAS meltdown warning
Fun fact:
VoCAS takes its voice samples from Christian Darkwell, meaning all audio cues are prerecorded messages by Darkwell
actually in canon VoCAS is an automatic text to speech announcer
Northwestern found it less expensive to just type a prompt in and let TTS generate an output on the fly than to pay someone to do voice lines
also i just now realized this but if you want Darkwell to keep existing you're going to have to give him another job
there's already someone in canon as reac ops supervisor
Kenneth Hickman
oh
Hang on I’m thinking
Head Operator or Junior Supervisor
Are what I’m thinking
But I’m still not sure
Reac Ops Assistant Director, Head Operator/Head Researcher, Junior Supervisor?
Tell me if any of those work
Head Researcher works
alright
Head Researcher it is
Fun fact:
Hickman died in the MEC when he tried to shut off all power to the reactor, he attempted to shut off the breakers for the power lasers but was electrocuted to death in the process
McGowan's tier list of all the CEOs/would be CEOs!
S: Lewis Richwell
A: Grayson MacQuoid
B:
C: Jason Newman
D: Jeremiah McDowell
F: David Newman
anyways time to quit the crap and get back to lore and stuff
Question: What were the other executives opinions on the MEC being blown up
Was it only MacQuoid who opposed to the plan, or were there others
several executives opposed the idea
unfortunately the majority wanted to blow the facility up
Fun fact:
Levi Van Dijk, former Chief Security Officer who helped rat out Newman with MacQuoid was mysteriously shot and killed in a back room on April 7th, 1994. He was assassinated by northwestern town make sure the Lake Pepin Disaster plot was kept confidential, although it was still far too late.
it got pretty big
i can see that
Are you gonna make some like catwalks under the reactor and coolant pipes and heat sinks and stuff or are you not worried about that stuff
probably gonna add cooling pipes and whatnot
another VoCAS line
i just realized i dont have a finalized style for what im going to do
i dont want to do 1980s-1990s aperture even though the facility is set in a salt mine
I would do the facility design of SCP CB, the atmosphere of Black Mesa, and the emptiness of aperture
i feel like its too quiet
the volume would be raised ingame so you could hear it better
Fun fact:
Karl Cole, maintenance director, tried to delay the explosion in the incident. He switched the facility to the auxiliary grid to keep power on (and it also removed strain from Penrose) and purposefully blew out the steam turbines to relieve steam pressure. He shut all the blast doors, and told all remaining maintenance workers to close the Obrysum seal. Cole survived the initial explosion and was actually found unconscious without his legs by search and rescue 3 days after the incident. It is a miracle he survived, and he was the only person found alive by any search and rescue operation. He died 1 months later however to incident-related injuries.
armband template
canonically employees of Northwestern Corporation wear specifically colored armbands
Reac Ops. wears green
Security wears blue
Custodial wears beige
Maintenance wears orange
Researchers wear light blue
Administration wears purple
visitors wear disposable wristbands and Raiders don't have any Northwestern issued arm accessories at all
i might end up mixing portal 1 aperture and Black Mesa's design for the MEC
you should make a red one
Fuck you I have an m4 Sherman
every single Northwestern CEO on the alignment chart
Norman McGowan- Neutral Good
Jeremiah McDowell - Chaotic Neutral
David Newman - Neutral Evil
Grayson MacQuoid - Lawful Good
Jason Newman - Lawful Evil
skibidii
possible chance i wont be doing any dev stuff today, unexpected maintenance around the house resulted in wifi being shut off
would this be displayed on a TV or something?
or it is gonna be like a control moduke
they’d be on boards in the Cautus Warhead Control Room and Cautus Warhead Chamber
ok house maintenance is not related to wifi issue
its just my isp being a dick
real
thank you atnt
youd think since you live in the metro area where their hq is theyd have the best quality
then again i live in a developing subrural area where the only fun thing you can do is go to the neighborhood pool, a CVS pharmacy, a 7/11 or a walmart
and well over half of those fun things require you to drive a car
something i cant do and my parents refuse to do because they’d rather rewatch the entire big bang theory series 738 times
ok rant over this isn’t related to MEC
lmao
what will the warhead actually look like
is it gonna be a rocket thing like CPUF
or something else
when i was planning green star medical corp i originally wanted the warhead to be like a stormworks nuclear reactor design
where the fuel rods are visibly inserted into a water filled reactor creating nuclear fission
and it eventually just overheats and explodes
that idea might be too complicated for my small brain though so idk
like basically
you have a tank full of water with control rods
and the fuel rods are on a seperate piece outside of the thing
activating it slides the fuel rods into the control rods and nuclear fission starts
and the pressure and heat just gradually builds up until it explodes
That's not really a warhead though
That's more of a steam bomb
Unless you're saying the fuel rods get so hot that they basically chernobyl themselves
that was basically the concept
theres no steam relief or pressure release
it just builds up pressure and heat inside the fuel rods until well
chernobyl 2.0
anyways enough talking about green star
i have a seperate forum for that
this is MEC
canonically its the detached nuclear warhead youd find on a Titan II rocket suspended with beams
did newman literally just steal one
Canonically he paid the Department of Defense several million dollars to purchase the warhead
DOD wanted to hand it over to the Dept of Energy who would've then dismantled it
Instead they handed it over to Northwestern Corporation who modified the warhead to increase its yield to one comporable of that to the still in service B83 warhead
Northwestern said they were going to dismantle the weapon to develop their own mobile nuclear reactor
It ended up being used as
Well, a contingency protocol
Canonically set to go off when vital information relating to the Penrose Reactor or the EMT is stolen or when the facility becomes 80% overran by Raiders
Fun fact:
MacQuoid actually paid back the DOD all the money they used to buy the warhead. Every last penny. Because, well, the DOD wasn't happy when they learned their bomb was made into a warhead that was set to go off whenever their facility got exposed for illegal activities
Can someone explain what this is I don’t wanna scroll all the way up
Large-scale power plant running off of a hybrid fusion-fission antimatter based reactor known as the Penrose Reactor, an extremely volatile basketball-shaped reactor that could power the entire Northern US but blew up spectacularly and engulfed an entire town on June 28, 1992
Originally the game was to be set in its predecessor, the Bruneau Energy Complex which would have blown up on October 17th, 1968
what is the emt?
Etheric Multiparticle Transmaterializer, an advanced teleportation machine that allows a user to travel from reality to reality
wait i thought they were seperate games
Tbh the Bruneau Energy Complex acted as a refresher of my modeling work more than anything else
so bruneau is scrapped
Not really
is it still canon in lore or
To be honest the Bruneau Energy Complex didn't really meet my standards of work at the time and was quite grossly oversized
This doesn't mean the game is fully scrapped, it still exists in lore and if the MEC is completed it will be next in line for the Northwestern Corporation series
Fun fact:
The concept of the Zero Point Reactor in Bruneau was actually designed by Lewis Richwell before his demise in 1961. The blueprints weren't discovered until McDowell and multiple other executives discovered them in 1964 and decided to go through with the plan.
The Zero-Point Confinement Reactor was fully developed by Richwell and was activated in 1964
While it was significantly less powerful than the Penrose Reactor it held robust safety systems that have all been tested to extreme limits
One of the many flaws that the Penrose Reactor had
well thats because unlike Newman
Richwell had actual MORALS
which is why McGowan wanted him to take over
To be honest if Richwell ended up taking over the Penrose Reactor could’ve lasted the projected 120 years scientists said it could operate for
And not the 9 years it actually operated for
the murder of Richwell was basically the start of Northwestern's demise
Other northwestern character alignments:
Lewis Richwell: Neutral Good
Callista Richwell: True Neutral
Gertrude Fremont: Lawful Neutral
Jacob Ross: Lawful Neutral
Elizabeth Cornwall: Chaotic Neutral
Albert Heuermann: Lawful Good
Harold Newman (electronic store guy): Chaotic Neutral
Fun fact:
Richwell was killed on December 26th, 1961. McDowell requested him to enter a backroom, before stabbing him and burning the body in an incinerator. Richwell's body was reduced to ashes and never found, but he was presumed dead on January 1st, 1962. By the date of his death, the Zero Point Confinement Reactor had been patented and was under construction.
McGowan didn't appreciate that McDowell would take over, but by the time of his death on July 18th, 1964, it was too late.
Fun fact:
The M.E.C actually had a dam in the nearby river about 3 miles away. It was the McDowell Hydroelectric Dam. The MHD was the primary power of the auxiliary grid, but during the Lake Pepin Disaster, the dam collapsed caused a large wave in the river that went for 10 miles. It basically caused a mini-tidal wave in the river, almost flooding multiple nearby towns.
inspired heavily by the black mesa research facility hydroelectric dam lol
There is INDEED a hydroelectric dam that powers the aux grid but in canon its called the Gensokyo Hydroelectric Dam
this is one of the occasions where I make lore that NWO already had
also another fun fact:
you can technically survive the Cautus Warhead in the Reactor Ops. Complex
bunkers?
No
The entirety of the Reactor Operations Complex is encased in a giant steel sphere made to withstand the Cautus Warhead
Because in the event that stolen data (and interm the perpetrators) is destroyed by the warhead they can simply haul the Penrose Reactor out of its containment vessel and put it in another facility
Instead of spending hundreds upon millions of dollars making a new one
it also should be noted that sometime after Northwestern transferred from a family-owned power company to an actual corporation their headquarters moved to Seattle, WA
currently remodeling the Obrysum Seal
You could put a giant valve/wheel on the top right there which spins to unlock/lock it when opening/closing
So would this be like the tartarus seal?
Or like the horizontal elevator seal equivalent
Holds the same role as the Tartarus Seal but it opens differently
It's supposed to open like the first transition seal you see in Portal 2
A wall mounted seal that's pulled up by a large hydraulic to reveal the entrance into the facility
Ok cool
thank
working on a sign
ok nvm 3d modeling text in studio is awful
this'll go down at the end of the diagonal elevator that leads into Sectors C-D/Reactor Ops. Complex
the second R on "CORPORATION" is slightly askew to sort of emphasize the minor disrepair the complex fell into over the course of the Newman administration
listen screws are expensive to replace in his defense
is there gonna be other themes of symbolism for different characters?
for example: a patched hole in a wall in the reac-ops control room for MacQuoid
a crooked fuel cell for Fremont
a leak on a pipe for Ross
A helmet in a random box for McGowan (its all i could think of)
How’s the discord for the game coming along btw
oh crap i forgot ab that
Bruh
Bruh
try to DM it to me
or just
send it in the chat
that works too
the issue is forum guidelines aren't very specific on what's considered links related to your creation and links that are considered advertising imo
just DM it
exit signs
Just dm it
proof of concept design for hallways in Sectors A-C
fun fact: during the destruction of the McDowell Energy Complex several maintenance personnel took it upon themselves to steal a large freight train hauling nuclear waste deposited from the Penrose Reactor to escape certain death and managed to get 6 miles away from the complex before it exploded
the train went thru a suburb going 107 miles per hour constantly blasting its horn as people within the neighborhood frantically abandoned their homes
instead of hanging on the ceiling, i wonder if you could make like a train or monorail
Just realized this forum has surpassed 2500 messages
expaaansion
Fun fact:
Although Callista Richwell knew about Lewis Richwell's murder after she pieced together all the evidence, it wasn't publicly known until 2001 when Jack Afify, Northwestern Corporation's chief financial officer since 1987 did a little digging and accidently stumbled upon multiple letters from McDowell to an anonymous source and back. It didn't take long for it to be made clear that McDowell was the one who killed Richwell. Sadly though, there wasn't much to be done about it by now.

Could I try the game?
uh its not even out yet A
ive seen you, you literally just go to every dev forum begging for this B
the game is'nt ready yet for the playtesting stage
and theres like no scripting functions yet C
i don't even have the place on my profile
sayonara
if we're lucky we could have release by december of 2024 by my best estimate
as in playtesting release or the full game
Great to hear
playtesting stage would probably open around the end of summer or early fall
def need to put into account that the entire game itself is still being made by me and me only
dont blame me, blame the fact i havent used blender a single time in my life
and yet i still try to make a game
it's not that you need blender to make a game
it's that you need to know luau to make the game function
im even worse at lua
the only thing im good at is in roblox developing
but thats extremely limited
something that probably takes several months, and with my mood swings and the fact i have to juggle drivers ed and job searching in between this makes it very hard
quite funny that i want to see if i can join sst without taking into consideration you have to have time on your hands
i mean
you'd make a good fit considering what you've done for northwestern
correct, i've had people even mistake my work for qserf updates
which take it as you will could be a good thing or a bad thing
i assume they get paid as well but knowing my parents they'd probably view this as a side hustle instead of a full in-proper job
and right now my options for actual jobs are
cvs
kroger
or chuck e cheese
ok once again im stopping here because this isnt mec related
this is more me rambling about my desire to find something i like doing
fun fact: a chunk of McGowan's brain was preserved and used to set up Auto-Manager's morality construct
implying that Auto-Manager is an artificial reincarnation of McGowan that's been numbed to the point that it is incapable of showing human awareness
thats actually kind of messed up
who designed that?
primarily the division that created and operates the Etheric Multiparticle Transmaterializer
well the EMT was designed by Guy Torresan, who was also a senior researcher at the MEC who was vaporized in the explosion
i planned for there to be an extremely rare ending where Auto-Manager's failsafe systems
fail
and where he gains awareness
first in confusion of where he is
which was then followed by disgust and pity
did he access the files of newman's actions?
or just disgusted at the meltdown?
and he eventually kills everyone in the facility by venting the Penrose Reactor's emissions into the complex, uploads the files to the public and then activates the Cautus Warhead
i could only imagine the sheer rage of MacQuoid if that happened
'SO YOUR TELLING ME.'
'THAT THE FOUNDER CAME BACK AS AN AI.'
'AND KILLED EVERYONE?'
but still
what did he get so
disgusted about
did he access the files
was he disappointed in the facility
was he disappointed that he let McDowell take over
disappointed in the social class meddling that took place in the MEC, the 'mysterious suicides' Northwestern carried out and the fact that the company eventually resorted to human experimentation
im seeing a massive correlation between macquoid and mcgowan
in his words, "a plauge has overcome my very creation, and you are all to blame"
would he have tried to kill the executives too?
he could'nt have
the only grip that Auto-Manager had was on the MEC
he killed everyone in the facility over their complicity with the atrocities Newman and McDowell committed
even the ones who stood against it?
anyone that was in the MEC was killed, regardless of their standing on Newman and McDowell
as he said, "you are all to blame"
fair enough
I mean
MacQuoid is kind of what McGowan would be most proud of prob
despite all the evil
MacQuoid stood up against it and eventually overthrew it
eventually in this ending the Northwestern HQ is raided by the NSA, ATF and FBI
several executives held their employees hostage at gunpoint during this sequence
fun fact:
in this ending MacQuoid panicked so badly he grabbed a gun and literally shot himself right as the FBI broke into his office
this is not canon of course but speaking on alternate terms
actually MacQuoid was arrested on his way to work and was served the death penalty along with Newman and several other executives
did they ever recover auto-management and mcgowan's brain?
Auto-Manager was destroyed in the Cautus Warhead's detonation
oh right
Northwestern is honestly a tragedy
death
greed
its never enough
even when people like mcgowan and macquoid stand up against it
it always comes back
if anything Northwestern is just a challenge to see how evil i can make a company whilst making its public image still look positive
the company probably would'nt be bottom of the barrel vile because there's probably core game companies out there with even more gruesome lore
recent poll got me wanting to rename the Department of Security
there was a recent poll in QOTW about if QSO were to be renamed, what would it be called.
Department of Combat, Department of Reliability, Department of Safety
Mobile Task Force ✅
get this man a nobel peace prize
my own game has even more gruesome lore
lol
but Northwestern Corp. is still pretty evil compared to most core games
Fun fact:
Christian Darkwell went literally insane after the incident from guilt. In 1996 he murdered his ex-wife who divorced him after he showed signs of instability, and her boyfriend. He also killed murdered his neighbor's dog. He was arrested 1 week later and upon doing so, he showed signs of extreme instability and attempted to attack an officer by grabbing his gun and trying to shoot him. He was put on trial, where he showed multiple signs of instability there as well. He was later placed in an insane asylum, where he currently is today.
Did you know?
Sadly, Dr. Heuermann's Pepsi bottle perished in the penrose meltdown.
im also still mad my NeoCoil mysteriously disappeared
rant over, not related to MEC
@hexed torrent So i drew a rough sketch in MSpaint of what the Obrysum Seal zone could look like
Next to the control area in the middle of the room right up against the wall could be an elevator thats lifted up onto a track, then going through the seal and onto a platform/entrance to the facility
In the control room is a panel for the fan and seal, with a TV on the ceiling showing a diagram of the Obrysum Seal which tells whether its open or closed
considering you wouldnt be able to see the seal from where the control room is
Just got this idea while thinking about it but if you want you COULD pull a Penrose and do the same thing you did before
Make the 1st one, feel like you could do better
Make the 2nd one, good but unoriginal
Then make another one that looks original
But has the detail and coloring of the 2nd one
Up to you though since that would take a lot of effort
i plan for the Prototype 2 Penrose Reactor to just be stored somewhere in a giant warehouse in the facility
That’d be a nice little homage
But like I was saying, what you could do is a big seal that’s sort of like a vault where it kind of bulges out, then there’s 4 bolts on the side that rotate to unlock the door before 2 hydraulic arms mounted to the seal pull it up
Once again, all concept
Yes, instead of opening and closing it would literally just slide up and down
extremely rough sketch of said idea, the thing on top is the contraption that slides the seal up and down
i suck at art
this looks like something a 10 year old would draw
also i have an idea
what if instead of the Penrose Reactor falling onto its side near the end of the meltdown the hydraulic simply caves in on itself, the reactor falls onto the hydraulic pedestal and then into the abyss surrounding the chamber
Makes sense tbh
Purple
ok so we tied
im going to see what happens when you mix green and yellow
puke green
so were not doing that
coinflip time
heads - green
tails - yellow
yellow it is
oh my god
this should be a random event whenever a server restarts
Who in your opinion is the most important lore character
roblox is down right now so no work today
what i mean by "secondary operating machine" is something that people could operate if they did'nt want to deal with the mess that would likely be the PRCR
also made some fuel capsules
from left to right:
Regular - No effect
Efficient - Laser heating power enhances 1.5x
Reactive - Laser heating power enhances 3x, Penrose Reactor becomes more susceptible to trips
Super - Laser heating power enhances 6x, extremely unstable and may even blow up during startup sequence. Also shakes a lot when being held by user
I think the super cell just may be a tad bit spicy
added windows in the PRCR
canonically they're one-way windows made to manipulate workers into thinking someone's watching them so they do their job
however in acuality i just put them there because i felt like there was'nt enough depth
Fun fact:
This idea was thought of by Elizabeth Cornwall
i dare you to eat it
Status of all notable M.E.C personnel:
C. Darkwell: Survived, Went Insane
A. Heuermann: Assassinated
G. Fremont: Vaporized
E. Cornwall: Killed by singularity
J. Ross: Drowned and froze to death
K. Cole: Survived explosion, was found and hospitalized, died 1 month later.
M. Jobs: Literally the only guy who is living peacefully right now
K. Hickman: Electrocuted to death
if i missed anyone lemme know
$20 ill do it
fun fact:
The Penrose Reactor's actual name is the PIR EVO-01 (Particle Incineratory Reactor Evaluations Type 01)
how'd it earn the name penrose?
The PIR uses the Penrose Process, involving a rapidly rotating controlled singularity within the center of the reactor confinement
During this process antiparticles are injected into the combustion which further increases the process
When the reactor is operating at normal parameters regular particles are introduced into the mixture, which are incinerated and turned into Hawking radiation
This lets off heat which goes into a array of large pressurized tanks and the pressure is then used to spin turbines
So basically one random guy said ‘Penrose process, Penrose reactor?’ and everyone went along with it
Correct
fun fact:
Whenever Dr. Cornwall calls the Penrose reactor ‘P.I.R’, half the control room gets confused
Original prototypes for the Penrose Reactor had "PIR 0X" on them instead of the Penrose symbol
Fun fact: Jacob Ross actually made the Penrose nickname when he overheard a conversation between Cornwall and a random scientist, and he said in his own words ‘So it’s a Penrose reactor?’
turn down the bloom or change the neon part color
because its wayy too bright for my liking
wait, i have an even better idea: add glass encasing to the ceiling lamps
it would make it look more realistic while turning down the bloom
considering the Penrose Reactor is already partially obstructed even in the operating position should i make it so there's a dip for the glass to expand into
like the qserf control room
you could
also, idea for the server
Set up a patreon for like 5-10 dollars and people who pay for it obtain the Department of Insurance role
anyways, yeah thats a good idea
OR
you could just make the reactor raise up
when starting up
yes i understand there's now a lot more similarities to the DMR control room but it's more of a quality of life fix
i like the style but corium is not related to computer errors? also, the value 1e+72858599697163554x17 seems to be very exaggerated. real error messages dont have nonsensical values
the use of .bat/batch file in a system is unlikely because they just simply arent referenced in BSOD
bsod messages usually are more succinct and have a stop code or troubleshooting advice
not sure if you care but thats just my feedback
if you see this man as your employer, walk away.
if you see this man as your employer, it's okay. You'll have a good job.
i really need to change the suit on macquoid's photo
Grayson MacQuoid, photo dated 1991.
Crap I can see the resemblance
"Some believe the fate of our worlds is inflexible. My employers disagree..."
Yup
Idea for the reactor itself: Neutralization Lasers
So basically, they are in the middle of the chamber up against the walls, diagonally pointed at the reactor. These things are much smaller than a power laser, they’re about 1 fifth the width and 1 half the length. They’re basically built like big metal candlesticks. What they do is they shoot a white beam of energy into smaller laser receptacles on the bottom of the reactor to counter the reactor’s energy and prevent it from overloading. Eliminating energy with energy. How they work is they’re connected to mini uranium fission reactors, the energy of which is absorbed and shot out by the neutralization lasers to counter the massive amounts of fusion energy. In the meltdown, both neutralization lasers exploded.
Basically an over-engineered way of absorbing fusion energy and burning it up so it doesn’t overload and kill everyone
okay so neutralization lasers might have a different mechanic, where they basically just flash an element that is pumped into the neutralization lasers and take the energy from that and just blast it into the reactor which counters and burns up fusion energy, while not killing the reaction entirely
just big (but small compared to power lasers) white beam goes brrrr into reactor
how much neutralizers are there
2
one on each side of the chamber
basically
here lemme draw a diagram
im MSpaint rq
top down and side view (circle is reactor)
the real neutralizers are much shorter and practically pencil thin compared to the power lasers
but i just drew this in 20 seconds
Like i said, they're like 1 half the length and 1 fifth the width of a power laser
For fuel capsule insertion, are you gonna do it like old QSERF where the fuel cell receptacles are on the superstructure?
Yes
cool
you still having trouble scripting?
very much
Fun fact:
The neutralizer lasers were added to the Penrose chamber in 1987 after the fusion energy got too high and began a thermal runaway, almost melting down. And so, eventually the 2 neutralizer lasers were designed by Elizabeth Cornwall as a countermeasure to prevent such things from happening again. In fact, the neutralizer lasers during the meltdown in 1992 actually kept the reactor stable enough for people to flee the area after the shutdown expired. Eventually however, both neutralizer lasers exploded, and not long after the reactor suffered a hydraulic failure causing the reactor confinement to fall and burst apart.
this is made with the assumption neutralizer lasers are planned
Fun fact:
In 1993 northwestern was sued out of almost 5.9 million dollars by the families of facility staff.
Also, is there a trello page?
Fun fact:
The Penrose Reactor’s meltdown event canonically began at 1 : 50 : 19 AM with a Loss of Pressure Control Accident and ended at 2 : 11 : 43 AM with the detonation of the Singularity and destruction of the McDowell Energy Complex
The concept of neutralizers for the reactor would be nice
They would likely be hooked to the Penrose Reactor itself though
And in order to activate them you would have to enter the reactor chamber
i imagine them as something like this
literally just skinny, long neutralization injection units hooked to the bottom of the PIR01 attached to a flash chamber at the bottom of the units
Fun fact:
The reactor shutdown/SCRAM works by deactivating the power lasers and opening neutralizer valves to full. In the meltdown, the shutdown didnt work as the heat and pressure of the meltdown was so high, it kept increasing, eventually causing the neutralizers to strain and explode.
mmm big boom
did you take the screenshots in studio?
or using the ingame camera
Should also be noted that the SCRAM system is automatic and could activate during the Power Outage Event, when a turbine exceeds the EOB or in a normal case, when the pressure gets too high
The Purge System is manual and simply sends various currents of energy into the confinement structure to forcefully purge every value into a range that the SCRAM system can activate in
Fun fact:
Approximately 16 hours before the Lake Pepin Disaster Northwestern’s stocks fell by 36% and 104 million dollars that were under their ownership disappeared
Several FTC agents made calls to and even arrived at Northwestern Corporation’s headquarters to inform them of the sudden disappearance of their money, to which one of the executives responded “We wouldn’t be needing it, so we handed it off to someone else”
i took them in studio
its much easier to get an angle
that i like
also u should probably try to make the lighting better
i originally actually planned to run it through a 90s camera filter
Fun fact:
The penrose reactor's outer shell began to melt at 11000K, and burst apart at 37000K.
Fun fact:
In 1990, the complex almost melted down. During an integrity test, the penrose reactor began a thermal runaway and almost exploded due to a scram failure, but luckily reactor operations managed to purge the reactor successfully. Around the facility there are still signs of disrepair and maintenance around the facility from said incident.
This is possibly what sparked the idea of blowing up the penrose reactor in Newman's head.
Going to be taking about a week-long break from MEC devwork
Also going off of this, this would probably imply the MEC would resemble old Aperture as it's seen in Portal 2
Several collapsed structures, bent support beams but still operational
Honestly sounds like something that might look good
I also got a random idea, basically instead of hydraulics or gravitational lasers for the Penrose reactor, instead what if they use magnets. That’s right, big, fat, flat magnets to hold up the Penrose.
Fun fact:
All senior security officers (heavy units) are equipped with the standard Mac-10 submachine gun and colt python.
(this is more of a suggestion tbh)
if you dont want something as small as a mac 10 then maybe an uzi
Fun Fact:
The Site Administrator for the McDowell Energy Complex instructed personnel to move to their designated evacuation grouping points but to not begin evacuation and await further instructions
Several group leaders made the decision to disregard this instruction and leave the facility, an action that would save dozens of lives
Fun fact:
During the meltdown, all security officers were instructed to terminate fleeing personnel. However, their Mac-10 and python equipment was jammed suddenly, along with none of the security lockdown checkpoints working.
Also, during the meltdown the Obrysum Elevator broke and begin sliding down the rail, slamming into the back of the Obrysum Seal and breaking apart, which may have lowered the seal's integrity.
Fun fact:
The reason why the security team has such outdated and unreliable equipment is simply because northwestern wanted to save money. Much easier to throw Mac-10s and a couple of revolvers at them and say 'have fun' instead of buying full on assault rifles. Most of their equipment was vietnam-era or even some WW2 era equipment. Because they wanted to keep their money.
Infact, there's even some leftover M1 Garands from the old security divisions.
Fun Fact:
In lore a system error nearly caused a nuclear war in 1988 known as the Empty Crisis
Several NORAD radars began producing erroneous readings of tens of thousands of nuclear missiles approaching the Western Seaboard which prompted the only occasion where the President of the United States activated the nuclear football. It was only when Soviet officials had rapidly informed the DoD that no nuclear weapons had been launched that nuclear launches were cancelled, nearly 20 seconds from authorization
For around 40 minutes the entirety of the United States entered a state of total civil unrest as people stockpiled food and water and several killed each other over supplies
Hundreds of civilians attempted to seek refuge within the bowels of the McDowell Energy Complex to survive the theoretical impending doom only to find the facility had entered its highest level of lockdown, Code Black
This was also the only time the MEC’s post-cataclysmic life supporting systems were engaged
random but since im trying to atleast gain modelling knowledge i might randomly pick up the Bruneau Energy Complex
random thought i had
poor blast door concept
basically a set of 2 huge blast doors to contain any explosion in an emergency
A1 and A2 are at surface zone, B1 and B2 are at the entrance to reactor operations
they're designed to close in an emergency, B1 and B2 suffered a malfunction and didn't work in the meltdown but A1 and A2 successfully closed and contained the explosion, preventing it from reaching the surface
this isn't related to the MEC, this is BEC, therefore BEC talk over
The BEC's development has'nt been planned to restart yet
At a minimum i want to get the McDowell Energy Complex into its full release stage and the arleady planned successor, the McClain Fusion Energy Station
Fun fact:
There was an original plan to have a wing of the Sector A Museum of Nuclear Innovations be dedicated to the August 18th, 1985 MRC incident that would've displayed the accident from a public and media standpoint
This was scrapped after the decision to remove Quantum as an existing company in the current lore
I might have a wing dedicated to the Chernobyl disaster though since that occurred
funnily enough, the McClain station's incident was very similar to chernobyl, In 1980 northwestern tried to build their own portable fission reactor and during a showcase to the investors it's power randomly surged due to poor design and it exploded, killing the investors and the reactor operators. This caused an entire wing of the facility to shut down and be placed off limits until the McClain station was decommissioned in 1994.
are we going to keep pushing the date forward?
this is for a seperate game
technically a successor game to go in between the MEC and the BEC
essentially would be a semi-realistic take on a fusion reactor
the MEC will still be set in 1992
the successor game, MFES would be set in july of 2008
Fun fact:
When the MEC blew up it created a shockwave that was 287 decibels loud, so loud that could be heard as far as Juneau, AK
Roughly 75% of the population of Canada reported window damage to their homes as a result of this blast
1992 became the highest fiscal year for glass production in the 20th century
I kind of randomly had an idea for the MFES but it’s basically a tall fission reactor that is modified to supply atoms and molecules for an underground fusion reactor, and that fusion reactor supplies molecules for the fission reactor, and it’s basically a fission reactor and a fusion reactor recycling each other
for some reason I imagined it looking like a green version of the neurotoxin generator from portal 2
What is the BEC?
Bruneau Energy Complex
Originally meant to be the first game, but instead it’s going to be after the MEC and MFES
Fun fact:
VoCAS can also provide paging information (eg, information to specific employees) and site-wide PSAs
Fun fact #2:
The Penrose Reactor uses liquid helium kept barely above its freezing point as coolant
It took 4 1/2 years for Northwestern to create liquid helium generators and to keep the liquid helium at its desired temperature
A very costly process that takes up a majority of operational costs
Fun fact:
VoCAS systems are actually partly recycled from FELIX. Some of the FELIX servers were preserved, restored, and used for VoCAS. Primarily the broadcasting system, while VoCAS's voice and messages use an advanced text-to-speech AI.
Fun fact:
MacQuoid had knowledge of McGowan's presence in the auto-manager and intended to have maintenance disassemble it as he felt like it was unjust to have McGowan technically alive. The meltdown instead blew up auto-manager, so I guess it saved him the effort.
Auto-Manager couldn’t be disassembled as a majority of the facility was automated by it
If it was removed Northwestern would have to reaccomodate the facility to be operated completely manually
And it would also mean the company would have to hire and pay more people money
MacQuoid didn’t care about this though but Newman wouldn’t let him disassemble Auto-Manager
#1 cheapskate in history
Rename security to:
Asset Protection Unit?
Defense Operations?
Vanguard Division?
Vanguard Unit?
Facility Guard Operations?
Corporate Security Bureau?
this is relating to when I believe NWO_V said that they wanted to rename security after the recent poll
Vanguard sounds cool but a little overkill, facility guard is okay, same with asset protection, but defense ops sounds a bit too similar to the new QSERF security ngl, corporate security bureau isn't bad though
Fun Fact:
When the PIR was first introduced as a concept to Northwestern in 1967 it would’ve been powered with 6 lasers and would’ve been held up with a basic stationary pedestal, with the original belief that it could power the entirety of North America for an extremely low price
Northwestern Corporation estimated that the original concept PIR would’ve exceeded the company’s budget tenfold and even then would’ve faced restrictions by the NRC and FTC
Eventually after 5 1/2 years of re-evaluations the finalized design was approved in 1972 and is what was seen in operation at the MEC
Structural support beams that'll be seen in caverns of the MEC
Fun fact:
Dr. Elizabeth Cornwall was the first and only person in the MEC to catch on with the sabotage, and ordered security to feedwater pumps and turbines. She however was unaware that the saboteurs were the company themselves. She was extremely nervous and tense the entire shift, and when the meltdown happened she knew exactly what happened and tried to shut down the reactor as fast as possible.
NOTICE OF TERMINATION:
NAME: ELIZABETH CORNWALL
ADDRESS: (insert city address here i aint scanning lake pepin addresses)
CITY: STOCKHOLM, WI
DOB: FEBRUARY 28TH, 1921
GENDER: F
CLASS A SEVERE VIOLATION OF REACTOR OPERATIONS HANDBOOK - "UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD REACTOR PERSONNEL ATTEMPT A REACTOR PURGE WHEN TEMPERATURE IS HIGHER THAN 500K KELVIN."
This was one of the many notes that had been coated with anthrax and Elizabeth was hospitalized for 6 1/2 months after she had opened it
Elizabeth got spaghettified in the meltdown by the singularity
she was in the control room attempting to purge the reactor
After the purge failure, she was sucked into the singularity
Oh i forgor
No problem, happens too often
Fun fact:
Cornwall intended to retire in 1985 at the age of 64, but northwestern begged her to stay to overwatch reactor operations. This happened multiple other times, until it eventually sealed her fate.
Northwestern Atomic Regulatory Division (NARD)
on a scale of 1-10, how rigged do you think the penrose evaluations were
probably 7-8/10
yes while the Penrose Reactor lasted probably several times longer than most other reactors in other core game lores (nearly 10 years) the absolute state of disrepair the MEC is in around the time the Lake Pepin Disaster occurred would convey how much Northwestern would've falsified the reactor's evaluations
The reactor had a very rudimentary and unpredictable pressure releasing system, no emergency coolant discharge system and various coolant pumps were defective
It was an absolute miracle the facility managed to last that long
Northwestern went to absolutely insane lengths to assure that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission couldn’t obtain the necessary documents to forcefully inspect the facility
said insane lengths being?
bribing state judges to deny warrants, threatening loss of employment and legal action if employees reported misconduct to the NRC or OSHA
btw what do you use to make the logos?
do you just use canva or something else?
i use ibis paint to add wear and tear to some decals
i might make a security and ethics logo
I also plan to make the Vanguard Unit, which is basically just elite security
anyways
can you provide a transparent northwestern logo for said logo
or
i could just screenshot but idk
What documentation, never heard of it.. just ignore the smoke behind you
wip turbine
fun fact:
during the successful nightshift ending the Site Administrator leaves a voicemail congratulating the reactor ops personnel on managing to safely operate the Penrose Reactor with a “severe malfunction” and eventually hands out tickets to a local theme park via mail
wait do you have plans for all the endings?
only the Meltdown Ending and Nightshift Ending
the meltdown ending is just an EBS warning
shutdown ending like nightshift might be some kind of monologue or voicemail
originally wanted to do a hotel stay at the Mall of America for the Nightshift ending but the Mall of America opened on August 11, 1992
And the Lake Pepin Disaster occurred on June 28, 1992
hm
potential concept for a trailer?
finished
steam
me when my turbine goes spinny spin
‘Remember, in the event of a dangerous anti-gravitational anomaly near you in the facility, get in a single file line and walk away until you reach your evacuation point.’
I thought you said quantum wasn’t an existing company in lore
or I’m as usual taking things too literally and this is all a joke
quantum isn’t mentioned in the poster
fair enough
“their” is a caricature that could be used for any core game company tbh
Newman: ‘Ah, I forgot my glasses.. uh.. please do destroy our reactor?’
Bad jokes 101
the reactor silhouette IS supposed to be an indirect reference to the DMR but there’s several dozen different games that use metal ball cores as well
true
in canon the only futuristic reactor companies are Northwestern Corporation and Angelico Enterprises
Angelico was really only added as to create a rivalry dynamic
and at the same time not antagonize any other core game company
because both were made by me
the concept of Angelico operating something very similar in theory and practice to the DMR exists but at the same time i can’t be bothered to develop something that’ll see very minor usage in lore
Angelico enterprises uses the Pyrochemical Heat Reactor which doesn't use fusion or fission, it instead sparks a pyrochemical and then uses oxygen valves to fan the extremely hot flame which heats up the confinement, boiling the water and sending steam to the turbines
should also be noted that the two companies don’t have a “i’m going to kill all of your employees and burn your facility down” type rivalry
more or less something similar to the pepsi coke rivalry
they just want people to look towards them more
both hate each other but when someone rats out someone on the other they’re quick to punish the culprit and not the victim
professionals have standards
After the B.E.C or M.E.C we might be able to make the pyrochemical heat reactor just as a small spinoff, without a whole facility
who is that referring to?
noone
does'nt refer to anyone
for
obvious reasons
howcome it uses they and their?
really "their" is a caricature that could be applied for any core game company
yes the art example is very similar to the DMR but then again there's a lot of games that use metal ball cores
i mean in the lore universe is this referring to a company that's unnamed, or a hypothetical?
in lore it's likely referring to Angelico Enterprises
which is a company i really only made so there's a rivalry dynamic
whilst not antagonizing any other companies
ah
in very early stages of the lore quantum science was supposed to be a spiritual fanon competitor
eventually removed them from the lore because
1 - that'd be putting a group of 1/2 million people up against a group of approximately 4 people (3 of which are devs)
2 - there would be several bouts of conflicting lore
3 - the McDowell Energy Complex (and quite a bit of Northwestern Corporation itself) has major derivatives from portal 2 (what QSERF is based off of)
Fun fact:
Stanley MacQuoid's death enraged Grayson MacQuoid so badly, the day after the explosion many people would describe MacQuoid's office being a 'dangerous tornado hazard'.
insane work to create a company driven to provide energy for pennies regardless of class redefining the entire nuclear industry in the process only to get shoved away for a murderer who gets an entire facility named in his honor
casually murdered Richwell, whistleblowers, and some angelico enterprises corporate and said 'I deserve a portrait for my heroic leadership of this company.'
TVs might go hard
i might make portraits for these
]
Fun fact:
When the Obrysum Diagonal Lift slammed into the Obrysum Seal the door shifted forward into its frame, damaging it in the process and misaligning it with the locking bolts
Originally this was one of the speculations of how the explosion made it to the surface before scientists recreated a 1:4 scale diorama of the Obrysum elevator shaft and its seal to test how the door would've fared against the explosion if the seal was undamaged
yo thats cool
Should the FACRED (Facility Readiness) level be displayed throughout the facility?
6
7
2
Yes! Display them on wall-mounted CRT TVs
📺
whats redcon?
Security Readiness Level
It goes from 1 - 5, 5 being the lowest and 1 being the highest
the redcon level could adjust depending on the amount of Raiders in the facility
Fun fact:
These are the levels for the redcons.
Redcon 5: Facility is normal
Redcon 4: Possible intruders
Redcon 3: Armed intruders detected
Redcon 2: Armed intruders have fired on personnel
Redcon 1: Enemy military detected
it would also adjust on the state of the facility itself
eg during Stage 1 Meltdown the facility would be in Redcon 2
Basically in terms of their all around meanings:
Redcon 4 and 5: You’re fine, no evac preparation or anything needed
Redcon 3: Standby for evacuation but continue operations
Redcon 2: Non-crucial personnel evacuate
Redcon 1: Everyone get out the facility is screwed
should note that sometime during the stage 2 meltdown as every electronic is shitting itself redcon TVs will cut to NTSC color bars or static
i think i have an old test card i wanted to put on tvs when i first conceptualized northwestern

it probably doesn't like "McDowell"

poor jeremiah mcdowell/magellan/middleton
always getting his name changed
magellan?
isnt that the guy who sailed to the east indies
happen to me as well, though i understand the filter system having to be like that
at this point might as well rename him to McTowel
though abbreviation can go through ig
yeah i was gonna say LOL
sounds cooler
just like St. Rivera, i did had to abbreviate that, it is one way to get through filters
we'll put the real name whenever the full game released
december if we're lucky, if not january or february prob
i really have to figure out the workings of luau
should we release the MEC as a showcase first or when its startup and meltdown function
i plan to first release the place as a showcase so people have a taste of what to come
right
that's what im planning to do with SCRL
I mean, I did make a neutralizer concept for the reactor if you want i can turn that into a file and give you the model
i think i posted it in the server first
