Our population density is a lot higher than the US, not to mention the gdp for cities like 上海 is also higher. Cities like 上海 and 北京 are divided into rings, which means at least the inner ones are walkable. Though because it is * whispers * communist, our government does infrastructure a lot better from what I have seen (though I am biased). For example, even in the outer reaches of 上海, all the sidewalks are brick.
