i can't frown, is the frown necessary? I literally cannot frown and it's the most frustrating thing ever, I'm wondering if there are any other ways to make a lip roll sound

obsidian path
#

the frown is not necessary, loosening your lips is what's necessary

sick briar
#

but again what matters is loosening your muscles

#

to do a liprolls basically

full magnet
#

thanks so much for the help, managed to make some progress thanks to this!

#

Dropping an mp3 in just a sec

#

It's very short bc I'm just working on the sound itself, then working on extending it

paper epoch
#

when your doing your liproll make sure after you make that noise in the sound rec. u open up your mouth so you can let your lips vibrate

full magnet
#

The loosening part is what I'm struggling with the most, what exactly am I loosening?

For example, I'm doing this in the left corner of my mouth, what direction would my lips move to loosen?

#

It sounds so simple idk how doing less is hard

obsidian path
#

I think it’s one of those things that you just have to experiment with and spam

#

it’s something that makes no sense as you try it, and the explanations make even less sense

#

but once you get the sound, everything clicks

#

that’s how I was with a lot of sounds

i find the frown comes gradually the more you practice. starting with a frown off the bat didn't work for me when it came to learning basic lip rolls but it helped out when trying to do a lip bass / hollow lip roll

#

though it feels like it'll come with time

I have a few videos in another lip roll forum in this server with the lip roll progression I took just so you can see a visual and audio over the weeks of learning it

nice nice nice I'll check it out

#

yeah you’ll just have to find it in the lip roll forum if you scroll down a bit

#

happy practicing!!!

#

Thanks so much for the help fr I really started improving the moment I got feedback in this thread 🙏

#

One technique that really helped me to loosen up the corner of my lips was to do the exact opposite, and focus on tightening the corner that should be sealed

#

Then it was like the other side didn't exist and I started to get a little bit more vibration

full magnet
#

Current issues:

  • getting a higher pitch
  • dragging out the sound
#

Am I supposed to be transitioning from unvoiced tongue movement into breathing inward, in order to continue the sound?

thin pier
# full magnet Am I supposed to be transitioning from unvoiced tongue movement into breathing i...

I found my tongue assisted me with lip movement at the start but overtime, you learn to not use your tongue. Your higher pitch is a good start, don’t find it discouraging because getting lower pitches comes with lowering your jaw which you get eventually with practice. Learn how to get your basic lip roll (which requires no lung air intake). And then move onto trying to breathe in while in the same position of the lip roll. You definitely don’t get it first try but with time and spamming, you can hear it slowly get deeper because you are getting comfortable lowering your jaw

#

When first doing lip roll practice, I felt the side of my mouth that I wasn’t liprolling was straining and was actually hurting my jaw. I found this to be the right spot to practice for me. Turning the uncomfortable into comfortable with spamming

full magnet
#

Yeah I've taken a break from practising it and have just gone for basics whilst my jaw has recovered a bit, will start up again. I have a new method for getting a consistent lip position so I'm gonna test it out. Thanks so much for the help as always ❤️

Tangent question: King inertia vs helium gbb2021, helium's first drop, round 1, after "go drum and bass", what is the bass sound he uses there?

thin pier
#

like the next section? or the bass he uses in the "go drum and bass" routine ?

full magnet
#

the bass as he uses that routine

#

It's so clean and satisfying

thin pier
#

sounds like inward lip bass

thin pier
#

ty for the clarification

full magnet
#

Tongue lip inward what even

full magnet
#

Struggling to catch the inward liproll, is there any technique to check if my lips are in the right position? I'm trying to pull in air from the corner of my mouth after doing a "regular" (no air?) liproll, but when I do it with inward breathing I don't get any sound.

full magnet
#

Nvm I got it

#

we schmovin

full magnet
#

News flash: I don't got it

#

I was using my tongue without realising and tricked myself into thinking I got inward lip roll

thin pier
#

Perhaps, if you're comfortable, some video footage of your lip roll could be good to give you pointers about lip position / the general sound of the liproll.

full magnet
#

I have a bunch of recordings l, I'll drop something today

thin pier
#

BRUH, so much progression in such little time. You pretty much got the basic lip roll. Just gotta keep up the practice to make yourself more comfortable

thin pier
#

The same motion will eventually turn into dropping your jaw lower. It’s when you find the sweet spot in your basic lip roll to breathe it from.

full magnet
#

I'll be honest I was getting super pissed of that it seemed other people progressed much quicker than me, it's nice to hear this

#

and honestly it's 95% the help of everyone in this post lol, I'd still be doing lip farts without you lot

full magnet
#

for inward liproll is there a place my tongue should be? I'm find this quite hard to crack...

thin pier
full magnet
#

Haven't given an update in a while, I've just been trying to get my lip roll a bit clearer and practise inward liproll at the same time

#

I just heat a meaty asf inward liproll I'm so mad I didn't record it, been rly struggling these last few weeks

#

definitely want to move out of basses and back to basics BC I do actually sorta suck in general, it's just these cool basses that roped me into beatboxing

#

Helium is definitely my guiding light in terms of the heights basic sounds can reach, so inspiring

#

Nice!! and you actually name your audio files unlike me ahaha 😅

#

I did try this weird sound where I do inward bass with a liproll, sounds really tinny or something idk, I call it inward shitroll bc I have no clue what it is

#

I realy like the texture of your liproll btw it's rly nice

#

Also just a question for any lippy rolly experts watching, In napom's roll like this, right after he says "you can't roll like this like", wtf is he doing?
Is he switching really rapidly between an inward and outward liproll? or staggering a basic liproll? can't figure it out for the life of me and I really want to do it lol

obsidian path
obsidian path
full magnet
#

Are you pulling in with your tongue or breathing?

obsidian path
full magnet
#

Like, are you breathing in with your lungs to create the liproll sound

#

Or are you using just the air in your mouth

obsidian path
#

just the air in my mouth

full magnet
#

and pulling with your tongue to create the pressure

#

okay cool

#

so

obsidian path
full magnet
#

In terms of your basic liproll (no breathing) I think it sounds like you're in a position to continue to develop it just find

#

just fine*

#

alcohol and explaining stuff ain't good

obsidian path
full magnet
#

In my experience both of those things came with time

#

It must be annoying to be told "just experiment and eventually you'll get it" but if you try you best to note what you're doing, and possible ways to vary it, I think you'll get it much quicker

#

You are also building up muscle control around your mouth, I can only liproll on one side because I didn't learn to do it with my right yet

#

I know what to do, but my right side is not capable yet

thin pier
#

getting the sound longer comes with dropping your jaw. i concept that's hard to grasp but you can get a longer sound by getting comfortable with your jaw movement. your jaw will hurt because of the constant movement of spamming your liproll. but it helps when you put emphasis on your swinging jaw. this will help your mouth with the position of "dropping your jaw" and allows you to get comfortable.

#

but homie has left so hopefully this helps anyone

full magnet
#

Oh damn ;_;

#

I hope they aren't frustrated for not learning, it's really difficult stuff

full magnet
#

@past jungle

thin pier
#

👏 👏 👏 you have achieved enlightenment

#

very proud

full magnet
#

Wouldn't be anywhere near this without the help of you and the others here

#

I'm still trying to learn the first inward/outward liproll switch thingy

#

the one that napom does a lot, but I think it'll just come with time wen I spam

thin pier
#

yeah, try doing the technique in slower BPM beats to understand the sound and get comfortable going in and out and then you can go wild with faster beats once you got it

full magnet
#

bruh why tf have I not thought of trying it slower 🤣

#

you're saving me a whole load of pain here lol

thin pier
#

hahaha, it's like with any combos or sound. sounding it out slowly and then getting faster gradually

#

like a b t k

full magnet
#

Oh true true

#

speaking of actually, I'm kinda struggling to get my basics on the same level of clarity as other sounds

#

probably bc I don't practise them enough lol, but we ignore that

thin pier
#

never ignore basics as that is your fundamentals

#

i still gotta improve but i feel like basics is one of those things that you can never achieve perfection, you can always learn more or enhance your percussive sounds

#

like an inward k snare or a spit snare, you can get the sound but you can variate the sound or develop another comfortable way for yourself, there is just so much to discover for so many different people and people grasp onto different things easier because that's their anatomy

full magnet
#

Yeah true

#

I struggle a lot with tongue based sounds bc my lingual frenulum is further forward than most

#

I'm sorta trying to find ways to make it useful instead of being a hinderance

#

Could just cut it though lol

jovial tusk
#

man
how do yall get the sounds so easily? ive been struggling.

thin pier
#

keep at it though Egg, if you see your first post to how you are now, you have worked so hard and have achieved it!!

thin pier
full magnet
#

I did not post the clips of me cussing myself out bc I just couldn't get it and all that stuff

thin pier
#

if you are dedicated to learning it and experiment, you can get it eventually

full magnet
#

This statement is so so so true, but so so hard to trust whilst learning

jovial tusk
#

well without the frown, how do i get it?
like i was trying it but i got zipper instead

full magnet
#

bruh I been trying to do the zipper lol

jovial tusk
#

idk

thin pier
#

try spamming your lips outwards and inwards on the corner of your mouth. it may feel useless like you're doing it wrong but what you're actually training is loosening your lips. the frowning stage actually comes later on when you feel more comfortable.

#

because the inward roll of the lips isn't a "natural" movement, it's a trained movement.

full magnet
#

Yeah the loosening thing is something I only realised is actually something that literally comes with time, then there's this critical point where it just happens

#

I notice now bc I trained my left side, and despite having the knowledge to do liproll I physically cannot on my right yet

thin pier
#

@jovial tusk take a look at some of the feedback in this channel and the others ones in this server and there is a lot of good advice here and visual footage of people training their lip roll

jovial tusk
thin pier
#

it'll probably sound like a zipper first of all because you're breathing into your lips that haven't yet been loosened. try using the vacuum air of your mouth (no lung intake) to achieve a basic lip roll and the breathing in part of the lip roll can come later once you've got the lip vibration
