#any entry level programming job in Canada
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
It seems a bit long at the moment
I think most entry level people have a page at most
yes, I felt it too. But I don't have any programming experience, I had to include my projects that would show case some skills.
There’s a good google doc that has recommendations on resume format
I think projects are a good idea!
thank you. I will look into google docs.
I think your programming languages and skills are a bit big
What I mean by that is that it takes up a lot of space, so many looking into shrinking the white space there
but none of them include industry experience
None of what
The programming language or skills I mentioned, I don't have any experience in the programming industry. It was just how long I have been familiar with. How comfortable I am using each of them.
awful layout ngl, look at pins in #339595755851612161 for other formats
RESUME ADVICE (SWE/SDE) This doc is to address common issues that are seen in resumes all in one document. We highly recommend you read through this and make changes accordingly before posting your resume in the resume-review channel! These tips are ones gathered from recruiters and SDE’s at all ...
no summary, no “I want these jobs”
yeah agree with what splash is saying
i think the skills and stuff is fine to have
I have zero clue what your projects use or do
what i meant is like
it occupies a huge part of your resume
ideally it shoudl be like
a quarter? or less of a page
I don’t think anyone cares about “intro to Java” from Microsoft if you have a grad school degree lol
got it.
Remove clerk job, remove staples
expand on your projects yeah
xyz format
Move volunteer under work experience, but in front of community teaching make it Volunteer Community teaching
also
Remove skills altogether
this is probably me being nitpicky
but why is your linkedin link bhavik-knight?
is that just a placeholder
for anonymity purposes
or is that your actual linkedin profile
it's my profile.
and the link too
it's been created long back. I don't know if I can change the name. I will have check
you definitely can
you can
not the email though
the email you may wanna just create a separate email for it
with your name
or your school email possibly if you still have it
and you definitely can change it on linkedin
if you go to your linked in profile
in the top right it should say "edit public profile and url"
No don’t use school email for anything outside school (@rough barn )
I am checking linkedin. email I think I will have to stick for now. Because I have been using it for job hunts. I don't have access to school email anymore
okay
i personally use it
That’s fine it’s an email
but i guess maybe i shouldnt lol
next year you won’t have access to it 💀💀
for my uni i think we get permanent access to it
thoguh i should probably double check 💀
yeah i think my school is different because we're a pretty big state school
so no summary and career objectives?
no
I read on linkedin that adding summary improve my resume. I hadn't had it before. I wasn't getting any calls. From my previous resume to this one, I have been getting more calls for screening from the company compared to none before.
it may depend on the country
for the us a summary is not necessary
and i'm fairly certain it is also true for canada
and the uk
not sure about other places in the west
i don't think a certificate is necessary if you have a bachelors and a post baccalaureate diploma
i think they're nice to have if you don't have either of those
but you do so not necessary
at least in my opinon
I put them there because my degree is in Artificial Intelligence field, not Computer Science exactly, just a sub field. And my previous was Bachelor in Mechanical engineering. (not CS). That's why I put those certificates
I understand what you're saying
Hmm
I have been trying to cut it down to 1 page. But I wasn't sure what to cut and what to keep
Personally I would still omit it
Because my previous resume was 1 page, and I hadn't got any calls with that.
They seem like fairly elementary courses
And your experience in those sections of computer science will hopefully be demonstrated through your projects
are you a canadian citizen?
nope, international student on Post Grad Work permit
okay
I will expand a bit on my projects. What are they about.
regardless i still think a 1 page resume is best
especially if you don't have experience in cs
and expanding on your projects is a must
no worries! fix up your resume and post it here again for more feedback
For expansion of project what should I include?
also if your university has a career advice center you may also wanna show your updated resume to them
what you did, how you did it and if it's relevant, what was the impact of it
you'll want multiple bullet points as well
I have shown them the career advice. They also asked me to remove summary. But the resume I have made with help of them hadn't get my any calls. For more than 2 months. So I just put more stuff programming languages and jobs I am looking for. I couldn't keep it under 1 page, so I was just using 2 page later. And I have been at least started getting some responses.
i meant the resume that you'll make after taking our inputs into account
The impact on the society it won't have I think any. Because all of them are just course work final projects. Just to apply the skills we learned during the term.
Thanks. I will update it, using that google template and put it back.
Any suggestion on the cover letters?
Basically I am open to work in anything web-dev (frontend/backend), data-analytics, software dev, ml (which seems impossible at this moment)
yes
Thank you so much @rough barn and @amber rose. I really appreciate it.
anytime
yeah np
