just joining this server and appreciate all the advice above. Looking to find a mentor ASAP as an older junior dev (went back to university, finishing now at nearly 40, next move needs to be a good one!)

How do I find a long term mentor that isn't expensive as mentor cruise?

you can talk to people that you have a connection with

#

like alumni, old coworkers

Have coffee with developers who are 45+ years old.

#

YMMV, many people in the 30 to 45 y/o bracket have young kids... they (often, not always) don't have the time.

You’re in a community of hundreds of potential mentors 🙂

Ask older folk, 50+ year olds, for an introduction to anyone who wants to grab a coffee.

Ask not what your country mentor can do for you.

#

Ask what you can do for your country mentor.

#

It's a two sided coin, and often people with 60 years of life under their belt don't look kindly on the hijinks of 20 somethings. Best behaviour.

# white marten good idea

Understand how "asking for an introduction works." Someone might not necessarily be up for mentoring... but the elderly know a ton of folks. They might know the right person.

No.

#

They're 50 year old software devs they don't need money. Software pays.

#

They just want someone fun to have coffee with, be that person.

Do you have a specific area where you want help in? I could potentially help you out as a mentor if our area of interests align well

Cool thats awesome, have you looked into React?

white marten
#

Is this something you could be a mentor for? @merry fiber

merry fiber
#

Yeah I can help you there

#

Depends what you need help for specifically though! @white marten

Like if I have coding questions or need someone to review my portfolio @merry fiber, can you help with that? Or what do you usually help? 🙂

merry fiber
#

I can help you with reviewing the portfolio

#

@white marten Also I can mentor you about the potential career trajectories - what frameworks to study, what you need to do if you want to get a job, etc.

#

We can have a chat if you'd like, I'm keen to hear in more detail where you need more help

Yes a chat would be great @merry fiber
