#0 YoE, graduated in November considering next steps

Hello!

I'll start by saying all I want is a job to pay the bills that isn't being a SWE (ideally, coding makes me depressed) and to move out, but the only way I'm allowed to move out is if I get a job in my field. I'm not allowed to get a job otherwise (I'm fully aware this is unreasonable and would otherwise be willing to get any other job as all jobs are dignified). I graduated in November with a BSc Computer Science and haven't been getting any offers. I've been getting some interviews and coding challenges, though! I've mainly been applying to data roles, but I'm considering jumping into IT if that's easier.

I have no technical experience (I've only been a barista) and only my Bachelor's. I was considering going for the CompTIA A+ and one of the CCNA or Network+ and applying for IT jobs. I wanted to know if this would be a good next step for me or if I should keep going for data jobs. I'm unsure how good the market for helpdesk/technical support is right now, but I genuinely just want to leave and am looking for the fastest way to do that. Thank you for any advice!

Can you also explain why you got a whole degree in CS but don’t want to do any programming? Or that it makes you depressed? I’m not seeing. Why you’d do that then @uncut spindle

You are able to actually make your own choices right?

#

Based on what you’re saying I can’t really tell

uncut spindle
#

Not right now no

#

It's a pretty bad situation

#

Feels bad saying that but yeah

wicked lion
#

Okay

#

Probably should seek outside discord help

#

If a full adult is coming saying they don’t have any control over their situation our advice is gonna be useful

uncut spindle
#

Realistically all I can do to make my situation better is to get a job in my field so I'm looking for how I can do that super quickly

wicked lion
#

In my opinion

uncut spindle
#

That's fair, I'm mainly looking for career advice so I can move out

#

Fully aware this field isn't for me but atm I just need to focus on the short term

#

if that makes sense

wicked lion
#

I mean this is a full career, nothing short term about it

uncut spindle
#

idt I'm explaining myself well I'm sorry 😭

wicked lion
#

You have to be able to take charge of your situation

#

Avoiding that ain’t gonna help you

uncut spindle
#

yeah but the only way I'm able to do that rn is to move out, and the only way I can do that is by getting a tech job sadly

#

fully aware that I need to take charge of my life

#

it's the end goal

wicked lion
#

Hmm

uncut spindle
#

i don't mean to be dismissive, sry if that's how i'm coming across

wicked lion
#

The Same advice applies regardless of your situation

#

To get a job in our field

#

You have the educational background, have you done a resume a review? What’s your strategy to applying for roles? What kind of roles are you looking for? All those things will help us help you

wicked lion
uncut spindle
#

i tried working w/ real world datasets for that

wicked lion
#

Are you applying to roles you are qualified for ?

uncut spindle
#

and then I just add/remove projects from my resume for each role I apply to so it's only relevant info

#

i'd say so yeah

#

i'm applying to some roles i don't meet every qualification for too since i heard that's good advice?

wicked lion
#

So what’s been going on since November? Or last spring? Your previous messages say you graduated before June but your current one says November

#

But have you gotten any results in the last X months?

uncut spindle
#

yup i've gotten interviews in the last few months

#

and coding challenges

#

i don't really count the coding challenges because like, everyone gets those though

#

but i haven't actually gotten any offers

wicked lion
#

So what part of the process are you thinking you’re not doing well at then

#

And are you applying in only the area you live?

uncut spindle
#

honestly i'm worried at how long it's taking since i know a gap looks super bad on my resume

uncut spindle
#

mainly toronto/vancouver

#

new york was also a dream, but that isn't really feasible for me rn

#

also applying to tokyo since i speak japanese

uncut spindle
#

so i was thinking adding certifications and going for a more support oriented role would be the play since it'd give me something recent on my resume and i've heard great things about the a+ and ccna results-wise

wicked lion
#

Ah you’re in Canada, I’m unsure what the market is like

Nor do I know if you’re even able to work in the US

uncut spindle
#

that's a lot i apologize 😭

uncut spindle
wicked lion
#

I mean certs don’t really relate to the field of software engineering so I can’t comment that much on them

uncut spindle
#

oh is this exclusively a software engineering discord

#

im sorry 😭

wicked lion
#

The name is “CS career questions”

#

But I’m simply saying they don’t relate to that field so I can’t comment

uncut spindle
#

ah that's fair

#

yeah for software engineering im p sure a comprehensive github is prob the best thing right?

#

i might work on that in my downtime between gunning for certs/applying for roles

wicked lion
#

Best thing for what exactly

uncut spindle
#

swe roles

#

i dont really want them but like

wicked lion
#

I’ve never put a github on a resume so idk what you mean tbh

uncut spindle
#

trying to make sure my net is as wide as possible

#

oh

#

huh

wicked lion
#

Gonna have to walk through the logic on that one cause idk what you mean

uncut spindle
#

i've been told by other people that employers look at your github history

#

and your contributions

wicked lion
#

For what

uncut spindle
#

for developer roles

wicked lion
#

No homie

#

For what purpose

uncut spindle
#

oh wow

#

ive been misled by reddit

#

😭

wicked lion
#

I’m just asking

#

Like I guess it doenst hurt but I know I’ve never really looked at people’s GitHub’s

uncut spindle
#

hmm ok

wicked lion
#

Seems like an odd focus

uncut spindle
#

they've said it's so they can be sure that you love doing this

#

hiring managers i mean

#

so that's why i just assumed 😭

#

that is on me though, i'm assuming that for 0 yoe projects are probably the only thing i should list?

#

tysm for bearing with me btw, i really appreciate it

#

feeling super lost lately

#

also to address the graduation thing - message in june was bad wording on my part, i'd finished all my classes but hadn't been conferred my degree yet

wicked lion
#

Because yeah without any experience projects are what will mostly be in your resume I guess

uncut spindle
#

am I allowed to put projects from school on my resume? that changes so much 😭

#

I've always read we weren't

#

bbut yeah I have loads of projects from school

wicked lion
#

I’m not really getting that mentality

#

logically, why wouldn’t you be “allowed” to put school projects on your resume?

uncut spindle
#

that's a good point yeah

#

iit's still projects

#

hmm dope, thank you!! I'll put together a SWE resume also and start expanding the net
