It's your very first day so I would say like don't count it out just yet, see what you'll be doing
If it's not coding then what?
This is a very reasonable question to ask your manager or senior or team lead
If what you'll be doing doesn't suit you then time to look for a new job
Hello, thanks for your reply.
Yea my manager essentially told me that I wouldn’t be coding for almost 2+ years
I am a May 2024 Grad who essentially took this job because i have no prior experience
My main goal was to get experience and break into big tech
But idk what to do anymore
Ive sent out thousands of applications and barely get interviews
And the one i pass lied to me about what id do during the interview
Sorry for the vent im just so defeated
So what will you be doing?
Not sure yet cause i rented a lease here a week ago and need to see if my landlord would void the lease :(
No i mean if you're not coding then what will you be doing
I would be back on the job search
I would be trying to mass apply, network, and code side projects
Oh
wtf are you doing on the job if you're not coding
Its really unrelevant to cs
do you know what you're doing?
Im just staring at flight data
it's only been 1 day are you sure
Yea
ok
They showed me
then if you are sure after just 1 day ok
I look at flight data and report it when i see anything that might be alarming by following protocols
Yea
My manager talked to me
He said HR seems to have lied to us
did your manager tell you "yo if you want to code you should leave"?
And he says there are multiple new hires that have left early because of this
Yes
Hes also a professor at a UNI
He goes to teach lectures at night
He said the work that i will be doing will be completely irrelevant to CS degree experience
Im just not sure how to break into the tech market
Ive applied to tons of jobs but the interview rate is so low
Did you interview with any non HR people?
I’m just kind of surprised you got through 0 all the way to getting an offer and moving there without ever speaking to the person who would be managing you (or anyone technical)
Nope
I got to talk to 0 people from my team
So what is the interview process?
Because that would imply there was nothing technical about your interview
Which is noteworthy
So i had a phone interview with my recruiter
Who basically told me about the position and etc. The job posting even says that i will be coding in java, c and c++. Perform code reviews and etc
And from there i answered some general questions like my experience, and my target salary and etc
And then after that I got scheduled for a second interview which was technical
I got asked questions about linux commands
I also got asked questions about c and c++ keywords, libraries and functions
Like explaining malloc, how to free memory and etc
Whats crazy is, on the first day of work my 2 month co worker told me hes in the same situation. He complained about the guy from his interview was supposed to be the project lead but hes not even here.
And the person interviewing you wasnt technical?
I thought he was
Mkay
I asked my two interviewers what they did and they both said they were developers
And they told me the different projects they worked on
So where are they?
So apparently my company is a contractor company for the government
Theyre working for a different government branch right now
So theyre just not where im working
So idk where they are exactly
Hmm so you didn’t interview with anyone you’d work with or who would be your boss or even bosses boss
Different branch of government sounds like you’re not in the US? That phrasing is interesting
I am in the US
What does that mean then?
I got a PSC as well
Less acronyms
sorry i got a public security trust clearanfe
Clearance*
Im working in their flight branch
Hmmm mkay
Well if what you’re saying is true then I’d just leave, tell them I was lied to in the process (an expensive process if they got you clearance) , name and shame and move on tbh
If you really have any sort of clearance than I don’t see why finding another job would be hard
Yea i guess your right
the thing is idk how useful a public trust security clearance is
Its the weakest form of a clearance
The craziest part is
My coworker and manager both said its crazy because many new hires had been lied to like i did and theres a high turnover rate because of that
Sure
Um if u dont mind me asking
So ive been job searching for 10 months now
Ive had probably 2000 applications and 5 interviews and like 8 OAs
Is it going to be harder to land an interview now that im 10 months post graduation?
I realized that new grad positions accept generally under 1 year post grad
Not sure how that changes things tbh with you
You can just apply to whatever you want
Not sure what the question really is here lmao
Like do you think the 1 year employment gap between me and my graduation date would effect my interview chances
I have gotten some mix input from videos
I just don’t see why it matters
Just apply to whatever you think you could do
Is there something more complicated I’m missing? Lmao
Ya youre right
Yeah cool
I fully admit, I don’t get your question
Nothing a video or random on discord says would change your outcome
You should be more concerned with why did you only get this means callbacks from 2k applications
I find it odd you’re worried about the time since graduation instead of that tbh
Well I an
Am*
I have revised my resume a lot of times
From asking from the people here to paying for someone to look at my resume
I think the consensus is my lack of experience
I only have 1 internship that lasted a month
Yeah let’s avoid paying people to resumes review
Gotcha its just i felt like i was at a dead end
So I just paid for the service cause honestly i dont know what was wrong anymore
I didnt know if it was the job market or something wrong with my resume
Sorry for venting
The basic questions are , what roles do you apply to and does your resume reflect that you’d be able to do those roles
Right
I doubt you require sponsorship since you got a clearance of any sort so that’s fine
Yea
I mostly apply to entry level roles and new grad positions
But most entry level roles require 1-2 years of experience which i dont have
And there only a few new grad positions and many dont call back
Do u mind looking at my current resume?
Gotta get over this lmao
Like this doesn’t and shouldn’t stop. You from applying
I think all of my jobs I didn’t have the required experience they wanted
Ya youre right
Well you’re an adult gotta figure your situation out, I already said what I’d do if it were me. Up to you to determine what’s best
Yup
I think when i quit
Im going to start a job search blog here
And just grind super hard
Thanks alot man for your advices
1 year is usually the cutoff after grad after which you're no longer considered a "new grad"
So it affects those places that use that as a cutoff, which is a good number of places
As for the "gap" itself of 1 year of unemployment it doesn't matter as long as you have been keeping up with programming and skills and you can show it on your resume.
Employment gap only matters if during the gap you gave up coding
But even then it doesn't change what you do
Like you still just apply there's no way around that
Yup youre right
Ill keep you guys updated thank you guys so much for your advice and input
@tiny cape hey homie
i had a similar experience
can you at least use the name of the agency and make it sound cs related?
i was able to move to google after a year and a half but it was a rough year
@strong pike Hey man
I just quit yesterday because I came to the conclusion that the project they are working on is so unrelated that it would be impossible for me to relate to cs work
Just to give you some insight, they are a government contracting company and the project I was working on could only give me experience in Linux and some script commands. (Which i didn't think was good enough)
i just had no money to go back home
Ah so you were financially restricteed
i was working at lockheed so similar situation
yea
i moved cross country
and breaking the lease was 5k moving back with my car and everything was another 5k
Oh so you had a early termination clause?
Gotcha
it was an apartment company
damn 5k?
yea
how much was your rent man?
2200
jesus
i was in a big city
ya makes sense
I don't have an early termination clause and I do have to rent until someone picks it up
but from what I've heard people in that area is they get rented out really fast
my rent was 1550
thats good
in the lease they said no subleasing :/
so im just hoping they rent it out soon
Did your job help you get into google?
What was the process like for you? Did you submit alot of apps or did you work there for a while before applying and studying?
Scammer
My bad I took a while
I submitted a million and only got two interviews haha
