So i am a 2nd year university student and i will finish my CS degree in 1 year and 4 months (at the end of the spring semester next year). I learned java from my university (currently taking data structure and algorithm in java which is the last java focused course in my university) and i learned python by myself. i know how bad the market is and i am currently lost in what field i should enter and what framework should i learn.

i can either go the python route where i will learn data structures in python alongside the java one then learn flask/django then head towards AI and ML related stuff or i can head the java route where i would skip DSA(since the university is teaching it to me) and jump into springboot. or if you have any alternative routes then i dont mind listening.

i am not sure if it is still early for me to worry about the current industry since i cant see it get any better next year but i am planning to make a mega project this summer and put in the work no matter what then start applying to internships in my senior year (i will basically pray that i will get accepted in an internship).

what route do you guys think is wiser for me to take and learn during the 1 year and 4 months that i have? (4 months of this 1 year and 4 months is basically a summer break so i will have the time to study and make projects/leetcode during the summer if i don't do some unrelated part-time job and i would also appreciate any other advice).

I recommend python/AI/ML stuff

#

take it from someone with regrets about not doing that

#

i mean… u can still switch fields and stuff

#

if u end up preferring one or the other

#

why not apply to internships now? why wait until senior year..?

#

i didnt really take any specific route in school and i am doing just fine

#

I see

dusk pawn
#

I guess either way is good

silk mason
#

u don't really need to know either for ajn internship

dusk pawn
#

Oh

silk mason
#

its an internship, u learn everything u need to know on the job

#

the point of the internship is to learn lol

#

I searched on LinkedIn and some said that so I thought that I must know a framework 💀

silk mason
#

bruh

#

just make some quick(er) projects, maybe 2-3 and put them on the resume

#

get involved on campus, do hackathons, join clubs

dusk pawn
#

Alright

#

So LinkedIn is like the best place to apply for internships correct?

silk mason
#

sure, doesnt really matter

#

linkedin, directly on company websites, indeed

#

wherever, just mass apply

dusk pawn
#

Yeah that makes sense

silk mason
#

jobs are a numbers game, no need to restrict urself to 1 site

#

just apply apply appl

#

look locally as well, local businesses and what not. just make sure they're actually paying you well (i was getting scammed my first internship)

dusk pawn
#

I am not sure if I will get any paid internships but I will definitely not apply to internships where I have to pay

silk mason
#

u shouldnt be applying to non paid

dusk pawn
#

I see

silk mason
#

u can get paid good money during internships, no need to not get paid to learn

dusk pawn
#

Good to know

#

I will then do couple projects then before anything

#

I did do some stuff like a to do list CLI and an expense tracker in python but I don't think those are enough so I will try making something a bit harder then start applying

I think there's something to be said about easy to get unpaid internship vs grinding for months and possibly not getting an internship at all

silk mason
#

those internships are typically unpaid for a reason

#

i am certainly not going to be the person ti advocate for doing free labor

#

unless its like a non profit that you want to volunteer for (this is something ive done), however IME these things come with a lack of guidance and interest. You have free will though of course so u can do as u please. I would just recommend to first prioritize getting paid. If you find urself SOL later then im sure the unpaid ones will still be sitting there

#

that's true there ought to be a correlation between being paid and the quality of the work opportunity

dusk pawn
#

yeah i will definitely prioritise paid internships first but if i ended up not finding any by next summer i think i will just apply to multiple internships left and right (after reviewing their website for legitimacy ofc)

#

by then i should hopefully have some knowledge of spring boot too so that should make my chances hire

#

i will go backend focus for now using spring boot and later on if i hopefully managed to break in with a job and find some stability i will get into other fields like AI/ML

#

also none of the companies i saw specified whether an internship is paid or not so maybe i will have to check their website to see if they will specify or not.
