should I major in comp sci ?

Hi everyone,

I just graduated from high school and need some advice on choosing my college major. I'm considering computer science but I'm also interested in finance and economics.

Do you think the job market for computer science will be strong in the next four years? Should I focus on a general computer science degree or specialize in something like AI? Or would it be better to pursue finance and economics instead?

I appreciate any honest opinions and insights you can share.

What interests you more, computer science, finance, or economics? Pick what interests you the most.

To be clear, all three career paths can be viable. You will probably earn the highest income by pursuing the path that is most interesting to you.

Thanks ! , I prefer computer science more than finance , but recently just by watching the job market scares me about this major , everyone is saying that computer science is going to be replaced with Ai .

Let’s say AI gets powerful enough to perform general purpose software development. Would that same AI not be sufficiently capable of performing other forms of white collar work? What kind of jobs outside of software development would be “safe” from an AI that powerful?

Focus on what job you think you'd find more interesting

Finance is far more likely to be replaced with AI than software engineers are

Ceramics is possibly the most future proof job. Its not much different than it was 5000 years ago, aside from the materials which only reinforces/grows the prior methods

Although, I never seen it, my seniors tells me that tech goes up and down in cycles. We are just in a bad cycle right now. I wouldn't worry to much about job security.

Although, I would say my school name got me a lot more interviews from early to mid career SWE, so your choice of university could be important. I know people say school doesn't matter once you get a few years of experience, but I've had people reach out just because of my university even after 2 years.
