#Resume review for full-stack/front-end dev role

the 2nd bullet in gameempire doesnt really connect. How does implementing API increase widget performance? when i think performance im thinking like latency and stuff. Are you saying performance as in engagement (clicks)?
for my own knowledge: u say u developed a backend server so was all this functionality completely new or was it existing and u refactored it?
i dont quite understand how response time was improved by handling different request types
“deployed it on Amazon Webservices” would consider naming the top services u used
the projects are a bitt basic tbh but its fine
general improvements to the survey like responsiveness and faster load times, is there a better way to word it?
iirc, we used to fetch data from a specific source without utilizing APIs. when we started using them, it loaded faster and obviously more reliable since data is up to date. is there a better way to phrase it?
iirc, at first we placed all Express API code into 1 file. when we refactored code by splitting into multiple files, we noticed an improvement in response times
also, instead of saying X, Y and Z requests, is there a way to shorten it?
so if u dont even know what u used, why would u list it and then go on to list it as a skill?
what?
i would read that sentence back, even if i listed off a service, how would that help u at all?
what would u have said if an interviewer was asking u about it “yeah idk actually🤷🏾♀️”
so.. u mention that it was 15% faster, but 15% compared to what?
i would just say load times. performance is vague and could mean anything
i would just be wary of putting old items on the resume that you dont really remember, especially if its ur other main experience. At least just be ready to actually have something to say because if an interviewer asks about these things and you’re like “hmm🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔…. well i think we did.. and i think we did..”
the stuff isnt adding up to me and im not an active interviewer/HM/recruiter so if i have questions about the content, i would imagine others would as well
what's a better way to incorporate metrics into my bullet point if i designed something from scratch and have nothing to compare it with?
so are u just making up metrics? where did u get 15% from ?
im estimating to the best of my memory
do certain workplaces actively measure metrics? my 2 places didn't
u would need to sit down and think a bit about why the company paid you for your time to make that project. Programmers arent cheap as im sure that company knows so they wouldnt be paying you to make products that nobody is using or has no purpose
yeah
but metrics could be anything.. user clicks, website traffic, developer velocity, latency, CPU Utilization, bugs, tickets, etc
is client satisfaction also a good example? im thinking no cuz that's harder to measure since people are different
did that backend need to be created because there were security concerns? was it a better way to store and manage data compared to an old/legacy system
if theres an estimation or something it can be good but it needs to make sense like are u getting a number just based off vibes or were u sctually seeing customer retention increase or survey results now average 4 stars instead of 2.. stuff like that
yep thats a good way to explain the change, maybe something like
“Migrated user and widget data from local storage to MongoDB, resulting in…”
something of that nature
it won't look badly on me just because i used to store data locally right?
nah its fine
do u have tips on incorporating metrics when i have nothing to compare to the current system? it's rly difficult to do so when i designed something from scratch
like suppose i decided to make the backend first so i never stored data locally before. how would i explain metrics here?
also does this new version make more sense to u compared to the last?
“is there anyway to incorporate metrics” idk i didnt work there. I would use the above examples i already provided and maybe think about possible things that couldve been measurable that wouldnt be made up. If theres no metrics then theres no metrics and thats OK
the last bullet in gameempire doesnt make sense
are u meaning that because they share the same backend, their accounts persist across devices?
enhance gaming experience how? by allowing what? friends? messaging?
“Reduced survey errors by 95% by running over 2000 automated test cases, and validating data accuracy before launching to production.”
“Implemented survey logic in JavaScript and jQuery by dynamically…” this wording doesnt make sense. Should reword/move it around, something like “Leveraged Javascript and JQuery to create dynamically changing content based on users response, leading..”
“Improved survey loading speed by 25% by refactoring JavaScript code that handles complex features” huh?
“Improved survey loading speed by 25% by refactoring and modularizing the codebase using Javascript” or something
“instead of under a single file” no
ideally it's best if i can add metric to ALL my bullet points right? if i have to skip some because there wasn't anything to measure, how badly will it look on me? aren't HMs/recruiters really picky with metrics?
their account persists across the apps (u can register in web app and also log in to desktop app and vice versa), device doesn't matter since there was a backend server to save account info
every bullet doesnt need a metric. Yes in an ideal world everyone would have a metric for every single thing but sometimes that is not the case. There is no need to force
something that isnt there.
i would just say that then, the current wording is odd.
“Allowing for login functionality across apps and devices” or something of that nature. “allowing for account persistence across ..”
yes and allowing them to use social media and video game widgets, they can utilize these while they play their game. social media widgets for more social oriented games and game widgets just in general
i would include some of that then. “Designned a social networking app in React and Electron, allowing users to add friends, message users, and create custom widgets, enhancing…”
im guessing the collaboration part is not relevant and/or weak?
also, sometimes after running the tests and checking data accuracy, we had to make fixes to the code such that the next test run will be perfect. is there a way i can incorporate that task into the bullet point?
- correct
- no, unnecessary
thats just regular software engineering duties
that anybody does, almost implied
can i say "Implemented survey logic in JavaScript and jQuery **to **dynamically change..." instead? we often used the word "survey logic", hence why i put the words
eh
saying “survey logic” doesnt change/mean anything
ur just saying u changed the code which is what everythinng else already implied
saying 2000 is fine
just 2000 without saying 'on average' right? since that can imply i ran less than 2000
would saying "survey functionality/features" make more sense?
also is "Leveraged" a strong action verb? i never used it before so not sure
is an app's appearance also implied when u say 'app's content'?
hey, are u able to review my new resume? assuming u aren't busy
no need to ping, i (and others) review resumes on our free time since this is just volunteer work
i MIGHT be able to review today but i have other things to do
understandable, appreciate ur help
hey, are u available to review it today? also is it ok if i ping if u dont respond in a few days?
thats fine
those projects are common, would try to do swap em if possible
true, i plan on replacing them with open source project contributions
