#Would you ditch a chill job for 80% raise? (ML / LLM-NLP)
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
because if not it’s only a $5k raise (assuming you can get a counter from current employer)
assuming this 180 is 145 + 35k in stock options/equity
your existing job sounds really chill. if you think you can leverage this situation into a raise with your current employer i’d do that tbh
is remote work + relaxed workload worth less then a hypothetical 80%? (if stock is worthless, it’s 40%)
is this actually “seed” stage or is this one of those giant raises that claim it’s a seed round (proud to announce we’ve raised $10m for our seed round type deal) and do you think their product has a future
what is the equity offer
and how many engineers do they have
engineer #8
ok well my suggestion, if you think this is viable, is to negotiate a raise with your employer
actually
i wont suggest anything besides i’d be very apprehensive leaving your current job
how much is this, 0.5%?
Yeah I'm so torn
i personally wouldn’t do it
since it’s not remote, how much higher would the cost of living be if you took the new job?
this is also important
if it fails the title means little, no?
the latter of this statement is probably more important to you then i realized
i assume this is ai/ml
oh NLP
yeah so not being on the cutting edge hurts a lot i guess
startups come and go
1% feels like a lot but if you have doubts about the product or the future of the company….
i’m surprised 100k is your salary if you bootstrapped and built the nlp product yourself
are you currently at a startup..?
you said large co but
idk your scenario but i feel like you might be getting taken advantage of
is this fortune500
no worries
lmfao so they just let you cruise most of the time because you’re basically irreplaceable
ok well this changes my opinion a bit but
depends on if your boss folds and can give you what you ask for
you just agreed with me
you’re irreplaceable
what happens to the product
if you leave
and the occasional occurrences of a hardcore week of nonstop work makes that even more clear
if they say no - then it’s up to you to roll the dice
i’d only stay if i could negotiate this raise now that you revealed some missing context
depends also how much you want remote too
40%, so yeah 145
asking for 180 would also put a target on your back
you’d be in these weekly grinds every week
“we pay her more, so she should do more”
do keep in mind the fact you can still attempt to negotiate with the startup offer
lol
“200 base?”
or “140 plus $equity”
good luck
if you play it right here you win either way tbh
you should ask
update this tomorrow with what you hear back from your boss since i’m emotionally invested in this saga now

if your boss is a fan of transparency, i don’t see why
if not that’s up to you, i’d personally drop it if there is hesitation
