err ok
resume should be 1 page
remove summary
or ur “profile statement”
header is taking too much space, try to move things to the same line
put GPA with ur education or take it off the resume
something like this with ur skills section #1008225248098926753 message
put grad date in education on the same line as school or something
same with project dates, no need to make that a separate line
projects are lacking any substance.. or at least the way you have worded it isnt great.. doesnt look impactful, doesnt look challenging, looks like projects u do when ur just learning to code
so what have u been doing for 2 years since graduation? just at home?
did u join any clubs during school? did u do ANY hackathons? any volunteering ?
project bulletin points need serious work. You need to describe your bullet points using STAR/XYZ format.
X = What did you make
Y = how did you@make it
Z = any metrics
i will provide 2 examples for you
Bank App
- Created a banking app to track users funds, using Java and Object Oriented Programming
- Leveraged Stripe API to retrieve users bank info including checking, and savings
- Leveraged Java Swing, HTML, and CSS to design user friendly and responsive UI
- Integrated AWS EC2 to deploy the website for public use
these are just examples
No clubs, no hackathons, no internships, unfortunately. As I said before in hindsight, something that I may be already regretting.
Asides from being at home having to deal with personal family matters (won't discuss any further than that), I've also struggled to figure out some project ideas. I've looked up more advanced project ideas, but have struggled to get a starting point on those ones. I will admit that based on what I'm hearing, sounds like I should be going for said advanced projects.
Minion Master July 2020
- Collaborated with 3 developers to design and creat a tower defense game using JavaScript.
- Implemented the ability for players to create, update, and delete characters and attributes using MongoDB.
- Developed smart enemy AI by following a breadth first search strategy to add a level of difficulty to game play.
- Designed 5 unique maps and levels for users to play using PhotoShop and…
yes. Temp converter, and Vantage are the 2 weakest projects as they stand. Shows no level of difficulty. The other projects habe potential but its hard to even say if what u did was easy/hard because the bullet points dont say much of anything to be honest
I see.
And tbf, I did have plans on expanding my BankApp, such as a GUI or even creating an executable file from it at one point.
But yeah, I see that my details need work and more advanced projects will be needed.
What about the Experience section tho?
so what even is that project?
i mean its bad too, hence why i was asking if u did anything else
not really@important. Its an irrelevant job so i would keep it just@to show youve held a job before but there are other things to focus on
Basically to roughly simulate a bank's basic functions (transactions, withdrawals, accounts, even creating statements)
i dont even get it if it doesnt have GUI, or an executable.. so what does it even do? its just a command line and then u do what? just put in “put $5,000 in checkings” ?
right so yeah just not really.. anything particularly advanced at all
i would also think about how ur presenting these things to interviewers 🤷🏾♀️ what would u say if u got asked in an interview about it uknow? shouldnt need to be the next google or minecraft by any means but surely more complex than a CLI project thats likely just adding and subtracting basically. For project ideas, I would try and think about problems you face in your life , whether it be daily, once a week, once every 6 months whatever and then think if u can make something that solves that problem
can start kinda small and then from there expand
That's sort of the idea that I had. Take basic projects or programs and revise them to add more advanced functionality and make them much more robust, beyond just command lines or even GUIs.
for example, one “problem” I had was that I had wished there was an app to make friends in a city so can create an app that (1) creates users (this in itself gives the opportunity to play with technologies such as OAuth, databases etc), (2) ability to make posts (UI, more database work), (3) location (some sort of google API probably)
again, doesnt need to be the next Google, doesnt even need to be completely unique. But something that shows a level of complexity beyond adding and subtracting via CLI
Yep
or just expand on ur current projects
banking app can be expanded on for sure. Adding a database at least, a UI, maybe an API if one is available for bank info or something
Yep, for sure.
Essentially, even if I don't have any job experience, if it's not related to my major at all, just leave it off the table then?
no i said u can leave the job on there maybe just to showcase that you have held a job before (can help with soft skills as well) but there could be an argument to be made to take it off
Ah okay
i would work on trying to get 3 solid projects on the resume, not 6 kinda meh ones
that would be my personal 2 cent on ur next steps
I see.
I did also float the idea of certificate programs, but from what I have heard, they will only help me get certain jobs. (For example, C# certificate programs).
errr i wouldnt spend ur time on certificates
just to be frank
only one people can make an argument for is the AWS one but that one also isn’t particularly necessary
Got it.
should I upload or create my resume here?
