Hey all,

I'm having a rough time getting interviews (I've had 2 in the past 6 months) so I've changed a few things about my resume and am looking for advice.

For context: It's been almost a yr and a half since I graduated, I took a break post-graduation for mental health reasons and when I started job hunting a few months out the market I couldnt get anything. I have no experience; I didn't do any internships during school bc I was lazy and complacent. I went through fullstackopen and have been working on apps since the beginning of this year, albeit at a slow pace.

Do you think I should put my education at the top or bottom? most resources say @ the top but I got advice that putting it up top with a large gap is a bad look and instead I should start with a stronger project.

I'd appreciate any advice y'all can give me 🙏

Hi there! I'm in a similar place. I would like to start a discussion to see if we can work out some solutions to improve our situation.

Your project experiences look quite rich, so I am not very sure why you got so few interviews. Personally, I think it might be the following reasons:

  • Your resume does not show how you collaborate with teams.
  • You are not noticed by recruiters yet.
  • You are not applying for the most relevant job positions.

I think the following can help:

  • Making open-source contributions and adding an activity section on resume, to show that you understand the professional sde workflow and can work on complex, production-level software. Most serious repos have well-established rules and workflows, and the developers are quite happy to see people contributing. For this, I am actively trying.
  • Do more networking on LinkedIn and start asking for referrals.

There are other random factors like:

  • Companies are not hiring.
  • Hiring processes move extra slowly in holiday season.
  • Etc.

I am hopeful that things will improve soon, so keep trying! I would also love to hear your thoughts.

Hi, I really appreciate you responding. This all seems like good advice.

I'm definitely going to try adding a teamwork/collaboration bullet point under my team projects bc that sounds like a great addition I overlooked. I'm also going to try and network more on linkedin; that's definitely something I can improve.

I've also heard open source is great but I've always been unsure on how to include it; do you have an example of the activity section you mentioned?

I do think right now hiring is slowed down but I'm still going to try and keep applying, I have a lot of hope for these next few months too.

Now that I read about it, I think it's actually better to place it in projects, because automatic resume parsing might overlook "Activities" section which is not a quite standard section in most resumes.

I think projects suggestion makes sense, that link looks good now I just have to find a project to contribute to lol
