I have received an (almost dream) internship offer. massive raise compared to what I currently have, partly remote, etc. very very good.

situation is, I smoke 2-3 days a week to regulate my pain (i have upcoming surgery). i buy it legally in my state as well. normally i’d go sober at least 2 months before any opportunity but my offer came incredibly quickly, only 2-3 days after a 30 minute zoom call.

the want to drug test me soon i think, but the job doesn’t start for 8 months. is there a good chance that if i disclose this they’ll be willing to understand my situation and work with me?

Have they scheduled a test or does the contact say you are opt-in to random testing?

neither, the test isn’t scheduled yet but they said I would receive an email in the coming days to begin the onboarding process (which includes a drug screen). again bc of the massive gap between now and when the job starts it seems weird and i’m still not sure when they’ll want to do it

If it’s medical and you have a prescription I wouldn’t think there would be a problem.

yeah I’ve just decided i’m going to explain my position and say I’m willing to do anything to make it work

but i’m thinking if I explain it’s to manage pain, that I take it legally, give them documentation of my surgery, offer to take random drug tests in the months leading up to the job, etc etc

yeah. i always plan to go sober before jobs but it’s just insane that I might get punished for something legal more than 8 months before I start

I only asked if it was federal since it’s federally illegal but most will just ask to you to stop once you staff the job.

even if they don’t necessarily accommodate me by delaying my test, they might still allow me to take it. and in that case i can still do my best to flush my system
