#LinkedIn Summary Advice

I'm entering into my sixth month of looking for work after coming out of college. I've been doing my best to put my best foot forward and I have avoided writing a LinkedIn summary. I want to break into the software engineering market as an SDE I, really at any role pretty much anywhere in the country. However, I have been extremely passionate about video games my entire life. Its led me to learn a lot about rendering and game engines; but unfortunately, I have no professional experience in the field and nothing to really showcase at the moment. I'm also afraid that a summary that highlights that aspect of me might dissuade more "serious" people from hiring me.

In short: Should my LinkedIn summary show my passion for video games? Or should I focus solely on my marketable skills and leave the passion to the cover letters?

Do you want to develop video games?

#

It’s all about how you phrase it

#

I suggest looking at some good LinkedIn examples and seeing what people put in their summary and how they phrase things

#

That’s what I did at least

I mean eh idk if it’s really hard depending on your background and stuff

#

A LinkedIn summary isn’t related to that though

#

I’d still examples online are a good idea, that’s how I did it and I love my LinkedIn

I guess my problem is that I don’t have much to show in terms of video game experience. I could focus on the projects I’ve completed over the years related to games, or I could focus on the projects I’ve completed at work

Yes. I mean, I see a LinkedIn summary as like an elevator pitch about who I am. If I were being completely genuine, I'd like to talk about my history with games and the types of projects/games I'm working on at the moment. But, I'm afraid that this type of summary would turn off a lot of potential employers.

#

Or should I be looking at the summary a different way? It's just what I gathered from reading examples online

#

Hmmm yeah I agree an elevator pitch about who you are would make sense

#

Why are you afraid it would turn them off? I’m really not understanding that, you are just talking about yourself

#

Makes sense to me

Maybe its just my own insecurities

#

I don't want to not be considered just because my interest lies in games

#

Maybe I should write both and see which seems better

#

I mean be realistic

#

Why would someone read your LinkedIn as a measure of if they should pass you on an interview

#

I doubt that many people read a LinkedIn summary, I do because I’m nosey but I just don’t see it being a determining factor at all

You make a fair point

I'm just getting desperate. I didn't think I needed one which is why I've waited so long to write one

I mean

#

Sounds like you might be putting way too much thought into a LinkedIn summary

#

0 reason to be desperate over a LinkedIn summary

#

its just a linkedin summary, no reason to lose hair/sleep/sanity over it!
