I have a little over a year of experience as a full stack developer. I think web dev is probably going to be my best bet, but I'm also interested in embedded and crypto, both of which I know very little about.

My application strategy is to spam as many applications as possible to any job that looks like it's junior/mid level, regardless of the preferred qualifications. I'm aiming for about 50 applications per day.

My plan for interview prep:
Grokking Coding interview patterns
Leetcode (1 per day)
OOP/Design patterns

Skills I'd like to add, ordered by priority:
Typescript
React/Redux
C/C++
Smart Contract Language(s)
SQL
Java

Specialties to look into:
Embedded
Crypto
Security engineering
SRE
DevOps

I’m in a similar situation as you. I’ve been applying with no luck yet. What sites are you mainly applying on?

#

Linkedin, indeed, angellist

This is how it's looking so far. I spent most of the week settling into my new temp job. There is a lot of downtime at this job, so I plan to apply while at work and study/do projects in the evening. I didn't do anything in the evenings last week because I was too tired. I'm thinking it will be easier this week since I'm settled in.

have you done the resume review? response rate is trending in bad direction but maybe you don't know how many are true rejection if only one week? 200 apps in one week! good job i guess.

toxic cargo
#

got 2 responses this week so far. one recruiter screen, one interview with the engineering manager + technical interview

gentle hound
#

congratulations on the response. did you already pass the engineering manager to get to tech interview or the recruiter just told you you'd have these meetings

toxic cargo
#

they're going to do both on the same day

#

scheduled for tomorrow

Of the two responses I got, one was a recruiter screen, but I didn't continue because the role required working onsite at a location that was too far. The other was a technical interview and hiring manager interview. I went through both interviews and they later responded telling me that they are passing because they want someone who has more experience with one of the languages in their tech stack.

One response from a 3rd party recruiter this week. Phone call scheduled tomorrow.

Spent some time learning TypeScript, the plan is to convert one of my projects from JS to TS, then start learning react.

I also plan to do some DevOps stuff with this project so that I can add it to my resume. I want to try CI/CD, Docker, K8, and site monitoring, so I've been reading about that as well. Need to make sure to carve out some time to actually work on it this week.

The more I read about DevOps/SRE, the more I like it. I think that will be my main focus after learning TS/React.

Response rate looking not great

#

Might branch out into some other areas like "solutions engineer" or "support engineer" because I need something by june in order to pay for rent/child care

Cumulative chart: Red is apps, blue is responses (zoomed in a bit)

#

Seems like it might be about 1.5 weeks avg for responses.. so maybe I'm due for a few more next week 😅

Is there a reason for not applying as much with Indeed? I am also struggling to find a job with 1 year of experience. I apply the most with linkedn and Indeed

Thank you, I appreciate the info

The indeed count you see is when I've used the "apply through indeed" feature, which I've found has a lower response rate for me in the past. Similar to LinkedIn's "Easy Apply" feature.

#

Here's the most recent count:

#

I had to take a week off last week due to relocating. I'm going to continue the hunt through the end of the month.

#

If I don't have anything by the end of the month, I'll have to switch to survival mode to pay rent/bills etc. I'll be shifting my focus to finding some kind of customer service/manual labor job.

Once I have some income, I'll resume the SWE job hunt.

Do you have any education?

I mean if you have any experience with C or modern C++ showing that on your resume would be good

#

Showing you have an understanding of Operating systems , multithreaded programming, things like that

#

I never really did anything related to robotics before working at a robotics company

Im not giving up, just deprioritizing it because I need to pay bills/take care of my family

#

I need something to keep us afloat

#

Once I have that, I'll start up the SWE job hunt again

#

holy crap this is insane, 800 apps in 2 weeks?

#

er, a month? damn

#

post caught my eye since I'm also at 1+ YOE and also reaching 1k+ apps

#

except I've been searching since like september 2022

#

things were waaaay better at that time

#

crazy to see the stark contrast

#

my plan at this point - and I recognize that I'm very fortunate to be able to do so - is to chill on the apps until the market gets better

#

like putting in this gargantuan effort only to land a mediocre job simply because the market happens to be garbage...

astral kindle
toxic cargo
#

Sending out that volume of apps is pretty draining

#

Id probably do the same as you if I could afford to... just spend a bunch of time leveling up big in a particular specialization and then go out and target those positions

astral kindle
#

I have to ask: did you vet listings at all? you mentioned applying to entry-level only right? what is that exactly? like anything that doesn't say senior?

toxic cargo
#

Pretty much

astral kindle
#

for example I run into stuff that's listed as "entry-level" but they want someone 3+ YOE
in fact, that's what most of the market is rn

toxic cargo
#

Although, I see a lot of senior roles that are only asking for 2yoe

#

I'll usually look for the yoe requirement

astral kindle
#

kk

#

same

toxic cargo
#

And if its 5+ then i skip it

#

Otherwise I just blast one out, since reading the app takes about the same amount of time as applying usually

astral kindle
#

haha depends

#

whereas linkedin easy apply 👀

Yeah workday with their logins

Had one response last week, went through the recruiter screen and an interview with the hiring manager. He seemed to be suggesting that they were looking for someone with python skills even though the posting only listed javascript. I haven't gotten an official rejection yet, but I get the sense that I won't be moving forward.

#

Here's where I'm stopping for a while.

#

I've already switched to looking for jobs in other industries. I'll be focused mainly on that aside from trying to continue doing one leetcode problem per day.

#

I just started applying yesterday and I already have four interviews lined up, so hopefully it wont be long. Once I land something, I'll continue the SWE job hunt in my spare time.
