I’ve seen people in the subreddit talk about how you should aim for retirement in your 50s or something.

Uh

#

You can aim for whatever retirement you want!

Not sure what you are really asking here @peak barn

yeah but it’s sort of forced retirement because the tech industry is supposedly ageist and I want to ask if it’s true

Yeah I’ve personally never seen that

Hope that’s clear!

In this field in particular, there seems to be a huge amount of extremely old professionals compared to other fields.

Some people’s experience is exactly that, just their experience

#

You need to learn to differentiate between anecdotes and statistics

#

And decide what you care about more in a given scenario

I think I’ve had one or two that are borderline 50

and esp in the bigger tech companies you’re probably able to retire earlier than that due to stock appreciation and overall high pay throughout your career

the age when you can take distributions from a retirement account is 55.5 i think? or 56.5

If you want to coast in your 40s/50s into a mid 60s retirement? Tech is ageist

But every single person I know in that age group who didn't do that has absurdly marketable skills
