#How to explain 1.5-year gap on resume

Doesn't look good to have a layoff on resume
I think you should be able to put it. Just don’t list it as a lay off unless they push you to explain why you left during the interview
That has been my experience. If asked I say there was restructuring
They can put 2 and 2 together and conclude I was laid off
Hiring managers read the news and they can see end date
The only reason you should remove a company off your resume is if your work was not relevant to the job you are applying to. Do you know how many people have been laid off in the last year? 100k. Being laid off doesn't show you are bad at your job, it just shows that the company you were at incorrectly predicted their growth.
@severe thorn do you think that someone being laid off 3 times is a red flag?
And 2 of the layoffs are big enough to make the front page of national news
3 times in 2+ years
I think that's more reason it's fine. That means a lot of people got laid off right?
First layoff was massive
Yeah I think opposite is what I'd worry about
If got laid off from some no-name place they might wonder why
None of them were from no-name places
I could say you could remove company C if you really want to remove something since 8 months is a bit short of a stint
Smallest place was 60+ employees but it was a somewhat well-known company
So I already have 7 jobs on resume
Hmmmmm
Honestly it just seems like you got really unlucky, but I can understand your fear
You could also frame it that you wanted to leave the company cause they had layoffs since you have a bad vibe or whatever
Framing stuff is important, especially in the world where companies will layoff thousands of people based on their incompetence and submission to investors
🤷♂️ I don't have much respect for them honestly, my company just did layoffs today. It's just a terrible feeling all around, even if you didn't get laid off yourself.
Yeah, I remember how I felt the day Meta laid off
We had an exam at school that day and I got the worst grade on that exam compared to my other exams for that class
I don't understand why Google felt the need to announce layoffs to everyone in California
Now if I put Google on resume my end date will show up on background check and all hiring managers who read the news will know I got laid off
If they kept the layoff confidential people can just say they quit or something
Honestly if you had jobs at Meta and Google I'm sure HMs will be impressed you passed interview regardless
I would just A/B test responses. Behavioral is only one component, of course it's important but it's more so seeing if fit company culture
Oh I never worked at Meta
The lay offs won’t be an issue since you’ve been at those companies for over a year and lay offs are frequent
I was laid off due to restructuring
Why is this a big deal? Google laid off people with 15+ years at the company - great engineers even. The name recognition outweighs the fact you were laid off (if you even see being laid off as a poor reflection on yourself)
I already have a very strong resume without the 2 jobs I got laid off from
I think it's OK to not put every single job you've held on resume
it is much, MUCH harder to explain a 1.5 year gap than to explain you were laid off
I've held maybe 10 jobs, if you count college summer jobs and internships
in the other thread, you said 2 internships, 1 part time, 3 full-time. over a 6 year period that is not particularly anomalous IME. maybe on the high side, but not particularly notable
having your resume say that you were not employed in any capacity for 18 months is far, FAR more damaging to your prospects that revealing that you were laid off by google
yeah these are the ones I have on resume
I have others not on resume
with those 6, do you have an 18 month gap?
Like swim instructor job over the summer during college, etc.
yes do not include those. they are no longer relevant experience
I have a 2-year gap from Oct 2018-Aug 2020 cause of my first layoff (more than 50k employees out of ~230k impacted, was also on national news)
Then 1.5-year gap from Sep 2021 - now cause of Google layoff
Also 4.5-year gap from Jan 2012 - July 2016 because of an apprenticeship that I did that didn't result in a full-time conversion
why are you omitting those?
I already have 6 jobs on resume even without those
because you think revealing you were laid off or didn't get brought on full-time is damaging?
It doesn't make sense to put 9 jobs on resume
Like 9 jobs is a little too much do you think?
here's mine
and you had an apprenticeship in 2012, that puts you closer to me than a new grad
i have a half hour meeting
Tbh layoffs are fine. I think people understand. If you get a job they ask for references and if you’re a low performance they’ll know from that
i don't think anyone should be judged for what happened to their career during 2020-2021

what about 2022-2023?
