#Laid off by Google

damn im so sorry
Dang that sucks wish u luck finding the next job
According to my LinkedIn feed, it looks like my org/team was one of the hardest hit, with more than 50% of engineers laid off
weird they can't at least just tell you with a phone call that your getting laid off
I'm on payroll until March 20. Is my official end date the day I got laid off (Jan 20) or March 20? For resume and unemployment compensation purposes.
for 12,000 people? that would take entirely too long lol
i would say march
It would likely have been a half-hour video call if they decided to do it that way
Half an hour to answer questions, tell them what their severance package is, etc.
If an HR man-hour costs $50 the whole operation would've cost $300k
ok maybe they should send an email instead
and thats assuming the HR folks dont get laid off too
economy would recover by the time they got through everyone haha
Damn sorry to hear, I've seen some people get emails early in the morning and didn't check it because who checks their emails unless they are at work, and in the midst of trying to clock in their ID doesn't work
It's unfortunate how they went about this
Not only that, I turned down several offers in 2021 to join Google
Really regretting this now
i would say Jan tbh based on limited info here. def check the paperwork in detail – is that severance compensation? you can receive severance long after official last day, afaik
Official last day will be March 20, severance will last until July 31
The March 20 date is because of the 60 days required by WARN Act
@wind cove Hey lmk if you want someone to talk too or if you wanna prep together
Feeling sucks but you at least have the google name to your resume
Google should feel lucky to have my name on their payroll
I had a ton of other offers and they were lucky to be even chosen
Once you update the LinkedIn you’ll get tons of people coming at you
Lol, a startup recruiter called me at 8am today to ask if I got laid off
I was talking to 2 recruiters on LinkedIn
DE Shaw says they can offer 300-400k
Hudson River Trading says they can offer 200-800k+ and I was like "that's a wide range"
Realistically it will be on the lower end, probably 200 to mid 400's
Well actually I doubt HRT would have the audacity to offer 200
damn wtf trading firms
@rancid mica I had 6 jobs, 2 were internships, 1 was part time, and 3 were full time
over what period of time?
My parents call me every day to yell at me for getting laid off
Can u just cut off contact with them? You seem old enough and financially stable to do it.
Maybe work something out with them tell them your searching for a job
well
Is that a Swiss German thing?
thats a pretty big decision
and it may not be easy for them to just “cut them off” , if they even want to do that
not rlly a good suggestion there
i would suggest just kinda tellin em to back off if u can tho🤷🏾♀️ parents can stink sometimes and tryna standup to them can be hard
idk he seems to have a lot of bad experiences with his parents based off what he said, them being "tiger parents"
and like his whole mindset is just based around what his parents feel. They seem really stressful.
that may make it even more hard to just “cut them off”
not saying the idea of cutting them is like the worst ever but i guess the way it was phrased as if it was as easy as 123 was maybe where i had the issue
ya he shouldn't jump to that
i will say, if OP feels like they are able to cut them off and thats something they feel like its time to do, then go for it 🤷🏾♀️ sometimes stuff like that is necessary for the child AND for the parents
besides he has severance for 6 months and his job doesn't end till March. IDK why they would call him up daily, it's not like he's broke yet
parents can be weird🤷🏾♀️ my mom got an attitude with me when i got an internship at amazon and not microsoft so idk. Just weird situations all around. Hopefully OP can keep his sanity through all of this, its tough times
My mom got an attitude and was upset when I got an internship that resulted in me relocating for the summer. At the end of day sometimes it's best to just zone out parents and focus more on you when you realize they are only adding to the problem. Sometimes communicating doesn't work unless they truly see that what they have done is affecting you
I most likely wouldn't pick up the phone unless it's very important and communicate that to them, it's an unfortunate situation and no one is to blame.
Sometimes I see that parents really push children for stable jobs so stuff like this happens, or example you spoke on being a professor, probably would be very stable especially after tenure
my mom pushes that stable thing on me all the time, and she always bring up people at work in tech thats been jobless
yeah I told my mom I got a new job and I was moving to the Bay. She told me not to move out yet because they might fire me.
she was looking out for my best interest but it might had not be communicated very well.
haha i dont wanna distract from OPs post too much but my mom was the same when i relocated for the summer for my internship. Wasnt happy about it at all😂
hopefully economy can recover soon
My parents wanted me to move out. Moved out before I even got a job
I'm moving in with my parents on Feb 1
My parents are the ones with the house
I got fired from an internship in 2012 and had to move in with my parents. They screamed for several hours a day. I put up with it for 3 months before trying to kms.
pretty funny how other people had the similar solutions to us, some responses were too funny I can’t 😂
this one killed me lol
I added my 1 vote to that
dude he left the server
:kek
The mods removed it and called it a karma farming attempt lmao
ngl, he got laid off google but moving back in with his parents right after?
i'd start burning my saving to save my mental health
and my parents weren't even remotely bad.
He said he had a 1.8 million loan in some other comment it’s weird
I think it’s a lot of lying mixed in with some truth
1.8M loan.
like I have a 600k loan but that's a mortgage.
like did he buy a 2.1M house
That’s also him on unedit
He has a lot of varying stories
He says he has half a mil saved tho
yeah okay, dude just seems like he's full of it
Oh wow
I didn’t even realize that
i will say, even if you believe someone is lying or whatever the case, the way this was went about wasn’t really professional and goes against the spirit of the server. And even still now you all are still talking about the person “behind their back” and what not. If that person came back, Im sure this wouldnt be the environment that would make him want to stay.
or anyone else who may come across this thread see you all talking and gossiping and what not
