#MATH NEW GRAD, looking for SWE positions
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
review the pinned post and come back with an entirely new resume format
a new pre-made format will come with bullet points.
Can someone do a resume check ? Give feedback on what are some of the issues and problems. Also can someone elaborte on proper formatting regarding resumes some of the templates I've seen on Google do not have bullet points
put experience in descending order
what ur official position title at “OpenToAll” and “Laboratory of Geometry” ??
OpentoAll doesnt sound like actual work experience. Sounds like some extracurricular activity you did on your own time.

u should probably include some sort of grad date in ur education
there should be no use of pronouns in ur resume
youre probably going to need some better and stronger projects. Your experience is relatively old and it doesnt look like you did much swe work and the 2 projects u have, one of them is 4.5 years old.
review this regarding bullet points.
Ok @odd matrix thx that makes sense i'll have to move them to Projects a lot of the positions I'm applying for are junior tho. I should look into contributing to open-source
i would consider scrapping OpentoAll, IT Assistant, and Neutron Detection and replace with up to date projects, open source contributions or any RECENT hackathons you may have been in. Can also include leadership or volunteering experience if its worthwhile.
Only up to date thing I have is the Lab of Geometry project that I did this last semester
time to get to working on some more recent things then.
Actually that I remember there was another project for a class that I forgot to tack on it was a cheesy chess AI but the issue was it was a school project
I've seen for some positions that internship/school projects don't count for adquete experience
well no projects are not experience
experience is real world, usually some sort of corporate work experience
not something u did for school
Makes sense
internships generally also dont count towards actual full time experience tho (at least at most medium-larger established companies)
u can add the school project if you actually have something good to say about it. You don’t need to say it was for school either
i had school projects on my resume, i think i still do have like 1 or 2
The only reason why I listed the CTF contests is because those competitions introduce you to some hardcore stuff
The geometry project I did involved a lot of modeling and scripting with blender (not standard swe work but I thought it was worth mentioning)
maybe but it was coming up on 5 years ago, what have you done with those topics since then where its worth while to mention?
sure. I never said to remove that though, that experience is fine
for that position, i was asking what was your actual position title. Your title wasnt laboratory of geomtry, thats just where it is you worked
were u a research assistant ? developer? team lead? what
Not much had to stop playing due to school I took the problem solving experience and programming experience from those compeitions and used that my experience to smash my classes
Oh I was a developer but it was a school project for credit
so if it was a project that is not experience either
also remove the “(reading)” from technical skills. Any skill on your resume is free game and should be things you know well enough to talk about and possibly answer/conduct coding interviews with
I wonder if my background is just too general I didn't initially wanna speclize during Undergrad technically and wanted to learn as much as I could
here is a decent resume example that includes projects so u have any idea of what some of ur competition has on their resumes
meh background in math is fine for swe careers. You just may need to do a little bit more work to get ur resume up to par
I mean don't get me wrong i have more such as doing the Directed Reading Program but those were math projects that were mainly theory so I left them out
rightfully so
