#I received a job offer but im not that happy?

just a quick background, I am just an entry level new grad, I dont have any work experience. I wouldnt even consider myself competent in programming at all, im pretty clueless overall. However, I have still been job searching and I received a verbal offer from a company (we did a video technical interview prior). But some reasons I dont like it are:

  • The pay is like really low. I dont mind low pay cause I live with my parents, but I was wondering if I just waited if I could get a better salary with another company? Is there a way for me to negotiate a better salary? I'd like atleast 70k.

  • The techstack is liek completely different from what I have been studying. I hear some people say you can learn on the job but I could barely handle what I know already.

  • The company reviews are pretty bad. Like every other review has something bad to say about the management or the teams.

Its a remote job though, and I heard that as an entry level swe, you cant be picky with your first job. But is this job like too bad? should i tell them no and keep searching? I would ideally like to work here for maybe 2 years max then go elsewhere.

good questions @jagged bolt

#

in general , id keep the mindset of "bet on yourself if you are a good bet"

when i graduated i wanted a specific type of role in software, i gave myself 2 months to find a job in that field or i would pivot to something "easier" like webdev. If i had gotten an offer for a job i really didnt want, i would have still tried to go for a job i did want

#

but i had the privilege to make that choice if i needed to

#

you have to look at your situation and determine if that is true for you

jagged bolt
#

oh ok

#

i have been searching for about 2 months too but i have like 95% rejects, i hear the job market for entry level people is pretty bad now?

#

i actually wanted a web dev job

#

because i thought it was more manageable than something like java .net

#

but now its kinda weird

#

i just dont want to accept the offer and then maybe a month from now another company offers me something more aligned with what i like and pays more (this woul dprobbaly neve rhappen caus eim bad but still)

#

it kinda feels like this job just preys on noobs like me. seems kind of liek a trap

#

maybe im overthinking it

#

i literally have like no work experience, i dont think i am priviledged to say i dont want the job

glossy pumice
#

how do you find these bad companies lol

#

i was thinking of trying WITCH when i get closer to graduating in December

jagged bolt
#

i would name it but im kind of scared to but i basically found them on linkedin while sorting by entry level and searching "software engineer" and applying to everything

tulip hemlock
#

only you can evaluate if you are in a situation to not take a job or not

#

i was, and it worked out for me but we are different people

#

i graduated in spring 2020, which had its own host of issues

tulip hemlock
jagged bolt
#

no im in my last semester atm

tulip hemlock
#

oh

#

then wtf are you worried about LOL

#

mother fucker said you were a new grad

#

lol

#

you got like 3 months

#

relax

#

lol

jagged bolt
#

?

#

oh

#

ok

#

i mean its because im bad i was wondering if i should pass up the offer or not, cause they said i would start around mid october

#

i could say no but what if i never get another opportunity like this? cause ive sent out probbaly 1000 apps so far

tulip hemlock
#

Man you are months out

#

It’s up to you to believe in yourself not any of us

#

ive always thought

"Whether you think you can or can't do something, you are probably right"

#

so you know, do whatever you want homie lol

astral furnace
#

You said all these things.

No work experience
No confidence
95% rejects
Remote

Sounds like this opportunity fits your characteristics. Unless the company you are applying for is like a "Revature" business model. You can save commute time, gas money, etc. You can use the extra free time to study and prepare for your preferred career choice while making money and gaining experience.

#

If your mind set is how you say it is OP then yeah, take the job 🤷

rocky drift
#

@jagged bolt I was in a similar spot as you. I'm also graduating in 3 months. In total, I think I have applied to at least 200 positions.

My first offer was for 80k. I turned it down. After interviewing at a couple other places I managed to get a pretty offer (250+).

My advice to you is to accept the offer and keep looking for something better. Reneg once you get something better. Also apply to trading firms, I had a lot more success with them than I did with tech

jagged bolt
#

oh ok

#

when you say 250+ do you mean 250k? i was just wondering or that you applied to 250 positions

rocky drift
#

My TC is over 250k

#

In person tho

jagged bolt
#

oh ok

#

thats cool

rocky drift
#

Wait more like it will be 250k

#

Since I'm in grad school rn

jagged bolt
#

i think im gonna accept the position, but im gonna finish whatever interviews i have, and ill stop applying now as well

rocky drift
#

Are you good at LC?

jagged bolt
#

no i am very garbage at it

#

i am garbage at pretty much everything

rocky drift
#

Neetcode 150

#

Leetcode your way to a higher TC

jagged bolt
#

yeah thats the plan

#

but for now id liek to atleast get some work experience

#

cause i have 0

rocky drift
#

I have no work experience either lmao

jagged bolt
#

yeah but you are alot more knowledgeable than me

#

difference is liek night and day

rocky drift
#

Well I guess I am an RA but no one really counts academic experience

jagged bolt
#

i only actually started cs like not even a year yet

rocky drift
#

Wait how are you graduating if you just started CS?

jagged bolt
#

?

#

i took like the max credit load for each semester and then some

#

and i also went to summer classes

rocky drift
#

Do you have any projects?

jagged bolt
#

yes some but they arent really good

#

i was probbaly better off following tutorial videos

#

for projects

rocky drift
#

I wouldn't recommend copying a project off of YouTube

#

Wait I still don't get how you speed run a CS degree in a year

#

There is quite a bit of stuff to do

jagged bolt
#

oh

#

oh

#

i dont feel comfortable getting into the specifics sorry its not your fault its just kinda scary

jagged bolt
#

?

#

no but im young

tulip hemlock
#

i said 19 because you just claimed to be finished wiht your degree in 1 year

#

most US students start college at 18

#

18 + 1 = 19

#

also if you were 19 it would explain a lot about what you have said

jagged bolt
#

?

#

o

#

oh

#

im an adult but im not 19

tulip hemlock
#

LMAO

#

thanks for the non-answer

#

anywhere from 18 to 999999

jagged bolt
#

sorry

tulip hemlock
#

idk why you are saying sorry

#

just stop giving non asnwers

#

just dont answer at all if you have no answer

#

point is tho

#

what you have said so far is a real common mindset to have as a college kid

#

but its up to you to believe in yourself

#

and its better to learn that now

#

instead of whatever you are deciding to do loll

jagged bolt
#

oh ok

#

i wish that i could spend months learning how to do leetcode and getting good, but I dont think I am able to stay jobless after school for a considerable amount of time. I just thought that since someone as clueless as me was able to get a position somewhere, albeit not the best or what i wanted to do persay, I should take advantage of it. Maybe try to learn something as well and try to get good like @astral furnace suggested.

#

i am also sure that there are self taught devs or people with no degrees trying to get into the industry

#

who would like to have an opportunity that i have so i dont want to waste it

tulip hemlock
#

when do you graduate ? @jagged bolt

jagged bolt
#

after this fall semester is over

tulip hemlock
#

oh

#

so you do have months to study

#

🙂

jagged bolt
#

yes i do but i was doing freecodecamp and the odin project, and I would have to finish those to actually know things decently, before I would even be able to attempt leetcode. and then i would have to spend time using what I know to build projects. I dont think that I can do that in 3 months

tulip hemlock
#

and have 0 projects?

rocky drift
#

I'm confused

tulip hemlock
#

same

jagged bolt
#

the projects that ive done arent impressive at all

#

you could probably do them in your sleep but it took me a long time

tulip hemlock
#

dopubtful

#

idk shit

jagged bolt
#

if you are saying you dont know anything, then imagine me

tulip hemlock
#

why do you have this attitude

#

like

#

you have no clue who i am

rocky drift
#

I guarantee that you know more web frameworks than me

tulip hemlock
#

and it really doesnt matter

#

and me

#

i literally dont know anything about webdev

rocky drift
#

same here

jagged bolt
#

you could learn what ive learned so far in one or two days, ive been working on this for almost 2 months now

tulip hemlock
#

listen to me

#

i literally dont know javascript

#

stop assuming shit lol

jagged bolt
#

but you have alot of programming experience i think?

tulip hemlock
jagged bolt
#

if you can grind leetcode to get 250,000, you can defintely learn web dev if you wanted to, you said it was easy yourself

tulip hemlock
#

???????

#

i litrally never said shit about leetcode

#

what the fuck are you on

#

LOL

jagged bolt
#

sorry i confused you with rae

tulip hemlock
#

lol its fine

#

but i suck at LC

#

but guess what

#

it literally does not matter what others are doing

#

like

#

literally stop giving a shit

jagged bolt
#

i mean its kind of hard to not care when you see all these job requirements and you dont even know what any of it means

#

but you are expected to get a job in this field

#

competing with people who can do leetcode expert

tulip hemlock
#

its hard not to care

you realize i went to college right?

#

i have a degree in CS

#

did all that shit

jagged bolt
#

yes but you have alot more experience than me

#

i dont think you understand how clueless I am

tulip hemlock
#

what does this even mean

#

i graduated spring 2020

#

that wasnt 20 years ago

#

it was 2 years ago

#

you are acting like i would have no clue what you are talking about LOL

#

when that is just so so so dumb

#

and also

#

everyone else doesnt matter

rocky drift
#

spring 2020 was a rough time to look for jobs

jagged bolt
#

if you think that you dont have alot of experience, then imagine me

tulip hemlock
#

i was literally there with no experience 2 years ago

#

stop being such a defeatist

#

and you should be analyzing where that mindset comes from

jagged bolt
#

idk maybe its from

#

the 100s and 100s of denial messages ive gotten

#

over the past few months

tulip hemlock
#

no offense but

#

wah wah

#

keep going

#

my first interview i was literally told "sorry we want someone who can code"

#

move on

jagged bolt
#

its still demoralizing to receive so many denials

#

it makes you think that you will never get a job

#

and never get in the industry

tulip hemlock
#

need to fix your mindset

#

i literally was there

#

analyze why you have this attitude

jagged bolt
#

i am only applying so much and trying to get a job for reasons I cant mention, but if I were to stay jobless for too long, it wouldnt be good for me

tulip hemlock
#

this place is not a diary

#

if you are going to continue to ignore advice and be vauge

#

may wanna pick a different platform

#

people here want to improve

#

if you want to stay in the same place

#

thats fine

jagged bolt
#

im not ignoring you, i know that i need to try to get good and stuff

tulip hemlock
#

that isnt what i said LOL

#

so yes you are ignoring

jagged bolt
#

sorry i meant that I should stop having a defeatist attitude

astral furnace
#

most entry level requirements are pretty bs lol. Most likely written by non-technical person

tulip hemlock
#

my first job asked for 1-3 years of exp

#

still got it

jagged bolt
#

ive applied to the bottom of the barrel jobs and I still somehow get denied, in order for me to actually get intervews I have to send out 1600

#

and that is just linkedin

tulip hemlock
jagged bolt
#

please give me advice

tulip hemlock
#

already have

rocky drift
#

i've been rejected from some pretty shit tier jobs

jagged bolt
#

ill stop complaining

astral furnace
#

I think you need to improve your mental health

jagged bolt
#

its just that I realized that im very behind

tulip hemlock
#

like jesus christ

jagged bolt
#

i dont think i have bad mental health, I am just being honest

tulip hemlock
jagged bolt
#

i go to study now, I learn something that someone probably learned in year 1 cs. or in a week from a bootcamp. Then I still appear as clueless to interviewers, and ontop of that I have no experience

tulip hemlock
#

and logically thinking about it would involve realizing that
A) no one else matters its not a race
B) you literally have months left to graduate and figure out what you wanna do
C) there are people who have been in your shoes before willing to give you advice

tulip hemlock
#

thats how i know this is a mental health problem or a troll

astral furnace
#

im a college dropout and im still chilling

tulip hemlock
#

if i knew your age i could guess better if it was a troll or not

#

but ill lean towards mental health issue

#

and suggest you checkout #mental-health

jagged bolt
#

i can study web dev if I want to, but that wont matter if I dont make projects, and to make projects I have to spend hours and weeks debugging and doin git all myself, and then I have to have leetcode skills, which is another whole can of worms

tulip hemlock
#

this is not a diary

#

you are just ignoring other people and saying whatever lol

#

which is fine

#

but use the correct medium

#

thank you!

jagged bolt
#

ok

#

thanks

#

are you a admin, can you delet ethis thread?

tulip hemlock
#

uh

#

this thread should not be deleted

#

idk why you think it should be

#

but if you do that it will reflect poorly on you

#

so good luck

jagged bolt
#

?

#

how would it look bad on me?

#

i just odnt want anyone to read this

tulip hemlock
#

because thats incredibly bad

#

the community here is built on learning from others

jagged bolt
#

ok if you say so

tulip hemlock
#

#1023686300181745714 message

jagged bolt

i wont be a jerk

tulip hemlock
#

from another thread

#

this community is meant to be a teaching tool to help others, and to give guidance for careers and education in CS

#

if you dont want to be apart of it, you dont have to

jagged bolt
#

no i just realized i was complaining so much

#

kind of just spam at this point

tulip hemlock
#

we know

#

next time

#

stop complaining 🙂

rocky drift
#

Don't take this the wrong way but you should talk to a therapist about self sabotage

tulip hemlock
#

and take the advice

#

and exactly what rae said

jagged bolt
#

i am unable to unfortunately, but i will try to stop complaining atleast

tulip hemlock
#

but your choice

jagged bolt
#

i talked to you guys

tulip hemlock
#

sigh

#

a professional

#

we are literally software engineers

jagged bolt
#

oh ok

tulip hemlock

did you think we were therapist ?

jagged bolt
