#Nintendo Direct - February 8th 2023

Interesting

PS1 emulation is the most reasonable to work with, with N64 being 2nd place on working, and Saturn emulation being the last one and hardest to emulate
and i say that as a nintendo fan
Weird thing about Saturn is that you effectively have to create two emulators, one for 2D and the other for 3D so I actually cannot think of any good all in one emulators.
I say knowing full well that the full PC port of Ocarina of Time just launched barely a year ago
well i do gotta give Nintendo credit where its due with N64, they managed to make it in a way that it not only made devs frown and go to PS1, but also the hardware is sturdy that even emulation now is hard to get it right
is it something to be proud of? honestly idk
maybe, maybe not
heck if you wanna go even further, they did try to do a disk drive for the N64 and that didnt seem to work out
All I know is that most of NSO N64 games play better than their Wii U VC counterparts and that’s excellent
On the flip side, if anyone should be able to make a good N64 emulator, it would be the people with access to the full proprietary N64 specifications (i.e. Nintendo). Still probably difficult to get entirely right with, but at least they'd have a solid place to start.
Even with how bad OOT was on launch it still wasn’t as bad as WUVc
It launched in Japan and failed miserably lmao
Never came West
yeah, but the stuff that was made for it that got datamined and looked into was interesting to say the least despite it failing
Indeed
RIP F-Zero add-on content. No Rainbow Road remix for us.
Mario artist polygon studio is a weirdly charming one
the Mario 64 disk drive stuff is also a bit of a highlight
not as big as the actual Mario 64 datamined content thing that happened a few years ago, but still interesting
bro i cant believe that Mario 64 got decompiled on PC, and then people started putting Mario 64 Mario in everything, Tomb Raider, Sonic Generations, GMOD, etc
next thing you know, Mario is gonna be put on Discord to run around and play with
That sounds like a surfire way to get Discord sued.
not even by Nintendo just by everyone.
this is what happens when you take @ everyone too seriously
Not to mention new characters being added to take Mario's place. E.G. Hat Girl.
to be fair that has always been happening as early as the rom hack days, but its advanced a lot since then
super mario action RPG
give me frog coins, give me mario
give me frog coins, give me mallow
give me see yah, give me geno, give me cookies
im here to say something
etrian odyssey origins collection is 80 dollars for all 3 games together (40 separate)
i will note that I believe that cost is worth it
in my playthrough of EO1, I've only reached floor 10 and I think my current playtime is 20-25 hours
there's 25 floors in the main story, and an extra 5 for postgame
Nintendo
so extrapolating I'd say that the whole game will take me maybe 80 hours, including stratum 6
i actually listened to a few etrian odyssey songs before in my life and there are bangers to be found, so yea, it seems fun to buy
yeah

"The hope filled first steps"
Song: The Green Green Woodlands
Composer: Yuzo Koshiro
Album: Etrian Odyssey Original Soundtrack
Played in the 1st Stratum. Sounds really nostalgic when you go back after being far in the game. It was probably done on purpose. One of my favourite tracks.
Are they good games though?
I'm thinking of buying that collection one day
As a series should

The Etrian Odyssey III Super Arrange Version of Battlefield - Those that Slay and Fall, which replaces The First Campaign after the second stratum.
Uploaded by Pinky
the structure is:
Make a team of party members of your choosing- class, character portrait, and name are all up to you.
Enter the dungeon
You get to draw your own map of the place, go wild.
Fight a few battles that give you materials and experience points
Retreat back to town
Sell the materials, rest up, buy new equipment (new equipment gets unlocked as you sell enough materials)
Go back in to continue your journey
The dungeons in the first three EO games are simply structured: every 5 floor chunk is called a Stratum, and they're all self contained within each other
the last floor of the stratum usually has a boss
Stratum 5 holds the final boss of the main story, and there's a stratum 6 for postgame
WHO WAS COOKING IN THE STUDIO? WHO IS COOKING THE SAX ON FIRE? BECAUSE THIS IS GOOD! brooo sheeeesh
etrian 3 also has an optional side exploration where you go out to sea and sail instead
you find superbosses and earn upgrades to your ship that allow you to push farther
the games are very much styled like old dungeon crawlers
it feels like a game of D&D to me, where the game is the DM
It's not just a bunch of random encounters either
Most floors have FOEs- minibosses that can absolutely wreck you if you aren't careful
FOE stands for Field On Enemy, since you can see them on the field and can attempt to avoid them
Some have puzzles to work around them and get by
and then you can also come back later to obliterate them for rare materials for good equipment
Makes sense
Etrian Odyssey Untold 2: The Knight of Fafnir OST
Composer: Yuzo Koshiro
Arranged by Masaru Yokoyama and Takeshi Yanagawa
Once the time is right and the money is there, I'll give the games a try (cause why not)
two gripes:
the games are very slow paced
since you make the party yourself, there's not really much character development
if they decide to port the Untold versions of EO1 and 2 that fixes the second issue
yooo this is great
Etrian Odyssey Untold is a remake of the first game
(and there's untold 2 for the second)
These remakes add in a story mode which gives you 5 preset characters that grow along the way like a normal RPG party does
you can still play classic though
nah
they screwed up in not naming them "Retold" instead of "Untold", missed opportunity
They ported these versions specifically to (paraphrased) let people experience the games since the DS is no longer a thing really
also there's no Untold 3
They could, but I think their priority was to remake it to gauge interest first
Yeah that's fair
If this works out, the way I see it:
Remake the first trilogy
Make a new Etrian game
Untold 3 and/or port 4 5 and maybe Nexus
Persona Q and Q2 remakes are also on the table
That's a lot
That's also a lot lol
EO1
EO1U
EO2
EO2U
EO3
EO4
EO5
Etrian Mystery Dungeon
Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 (JP exclusive)
Persona Q
Persona Q 2
Etrian Odyssey: Nexus
Wait why are Persona Q and Q 2 there?
because they're fusions of Persona and Etrian
Gotcha
the gameplay is all the dungeon crawling of Etrian (including FOE puzzles) plus some mechanics of Persona battles (knockdowns, all out attacks, persona swapping, etc)
What's cool about Persona Q is that it combines the casts from multiple Persona games
Q is 3 and 4, Q2 adds 5 as well (and also FEMC)
Yeah that's pretty cool actually
and yes they are canon to Persona
They are?
yeah
The complete version of the main Persona Q theme, Maze of Life.

Nice!
Both ways to play run at a constant 60fps and with almost 10 hours gameplay and multiple boss fights there hasn’t been a single dip in performance
This is notable for a few reasons.
-
Most likely Retro used the original GCN source code of Metroid Prime for this remaster. This means every single cutscene and animation will play out exactly like GCN and give the developers more room to work on the polish and modeling. Doing all of this while maintaining a stable video game is exceptional.
-
MP GCN also ran at 60fps. Yeah I know crazy considering the GCN only has 24mb of memory. But the remaster perfectly recreates that buttery smooth gameplay the original is known for.
Sounds about right
And it's still a great game to this day so that means more people get to play it
Win-win
Metroid Prime Remastered currently has only one controversial issue.
The doors.
Retro (and other devs) working on this Remaster appeared to have increased the Alpha value of all of the doors in the game in order to make them brighter most likely for mobile gaming. The doors REALLY pop out of the environment. This is a great change but it really muddies up the look of the door when you get close to it.
An original Prime dev either on Reddit or Twitter raised this issue almost frame 1 of release.
This is potentially a bug… but I doubt it
So far the game has nearly no flaws. It plays very close to the original game and has the same changes and updates from The Prime Trilogy release. Hope that helps any of you looking to pick it up.
Probably would have been better to like fade it? So the blue got more transparent as you got closer
That way from across a room you can spot the door but it's not a big blue hexagon up close
https://twitter.com/ZoidCTF/status/1624487320132136960?s=20 also this is quite disappointing
While many studios did amazing work on the remaster, I'm let down Metroid Prime's Remaster does not include the full original game credits. I worked with so many amazing people on the game and everyone's name should be included in the remaster, not just a single card like this.
1726

This is like the TLotR movie credits ending with 'Based on the work of The Lord of the Rings writer'
Weird analogy. Even if "Based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien" weren't consistently the first thing after "Directed by" and "Screenplay by", The Lord of the Rings was written by one person. This is an entire team of people getting shafted.
ok maybe it's not a 1-to-1 analogy but the essence is there
Is this cos they're lazy to write everything so they just put that?...
Might be a length thing. My suspicion is that they wanted to keep the total duration of the credits the same, so that they could use the same music.
The ideal situation would be to do what OoT3D/MM3D did and have the full original credits with their original music followed by the remaster credits with a new composition.
yeah I mean it's not a big deal
but like
when so many people clearly put so much work into the original, and in the remaster their existence is just vaguely gestured towards, it's kinda upsetting
Man Idk
I think that is a perfectly fine gesture personally
It’s not like the Remaster yeets Metroid Prime out of existence
In fact it makes me appreciate it even more
I think there’s been a huge wave of crediting stuff due to art theft happening rampantly. Personally if you worked on a team that made a thing and that thing is recognized… I think that’s fine bud
I have been so burned out on western game devs I can no longer tell what is malice, legitimate concern, or some other third option.
I mean I am sure these issues are sometimes brought up among non-western devs as well, just that there are language barriers.
what i do have as an issue with western game devs is that they cant seem to remain focus on being a creative without causing some kind of problem for themselves
Not helped by the fact that someone's going to find a problem with your decisions no matter what you decide on.
heck i was fine with playing games, critiquing with the pros and cons, and come to a conclusion that comes from personal experience to share with others and their experiences, taking in both the good and the bad
nowadays it seems like its becoming needless nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking, and i dont believe this really helps matters for the gaming experience for both the creators & the players, especially when taking the problems or concern thing taken into account that Phantismo and i said earlier
atleast it does still point that the original version with many of the devs that worked on it were and are still the ones to be acknowledged for their work, even as short as this credits text may be, some remasters wouldnt even do that at all and leave it blank
Why is kuru kuru kururin unironically difficult
kuru kuru kururin is fun, played it back on wii u
