#The Snail

Fun fact: a snail is an actual thing, the inverse of a slug: snails kept their prime movers but had their traction motors removed, supplying more generated electricity to powered traction motor units.
I both love and hate it
snail and slug= locomotive
its a big lego
so thats where shunters come from
Now I want both a snail and a slug in game. If the DV lore is to be believed, I would have no doubt in a couple of snail/slug pairs laying around the railroad
Or slail/snug
Or shut/up
yes
Beef, just let me do my own thing
You could almost start making a truth table of whether a locomotive has a cab, a prime mover and traction motors, and what you'd call them all.
✅✅✅: locomotive
❌❌✅: slug
And while we're at it, still in no particular order.
❌✅❌: snail
❌✅✅: B-unit
✅❌❌: Control car or DVT
So a snail is basically a glorified diesel generator on a flatcar
I still need this as a B unit
✅❌✅: Road Slug (slug with a cab)
this point is an african swallow
Now we only need ✅✅❌
The weird Israeli Cab-Generator cars
There it is
DM3
Steamers have a cab don't they?
Well that's a subway engine so they kinda have a roof most of the time
Notice these huge exhaust pipes going back to the tank? They are there to not fill the tunnel with smoke and steam
There's this article about it if you want https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_Railway
i quote "Technically all the steamers are ❌❌❌" . and steamers with a cab exist. But I do conceit that cables steam engines do exist
I mean, how does one define a cab?
Does it have to be entirely enclosed? What about air conditioning/heating? Are windows required? Ventilation?
If I put a large cardboard box on a flatcar, does it have a cab now?
I'd prefer to define cab to be "place from which the vehicle can be controlled without a remote."
If it's there, ✅⏹️⏹️
If it's not, ❌⏹️⏹️
(⏹️ means any value)
So we have:
🕹️: cab/controls, 🔥: prime mover, 🛞: traction motors
🕹️🔥🛞 | name
----------------
❌❌❌ | carriage
❌❌✅ | slug
❌✅❌ | snail
❌✅✅ | B-unit
✅❌❌ | control car, driving van trailer
✅❌✅ | road slug, electric locomotive
✅✅❌ | generator car I guess (some argue Diesel-mechanical locomotives are in this set)
✅✅✅ | locomotive
So theoretically, of a snail can power 2 slugs, we could have loco-slug-slug-snail-slug-slug-loco and be able to pull anything
Actually, yea your right
Yup, like a smokeless grill
kinda
"Sluglette"
These are especially cursed when they end up on electric push-pulls (not a thing to Jerusalem anymore after they ordered Desiro HCs, but the electrified bit of the south main still has push-pull and I forgor whether Modi'in is still diesel)
There’s lore?
Somewhat, more of just the setting of the railroad. Most stuff is in disrepair, so several rebuilt/repurposed loco's wouldn't be a suprise
y e s .
M o r e y e s
U l t I m a t e y e a
T h e b e s t y e s t h e r e I s
i want snail
Road slug + Snail = Loco
slaug
snail + prime mover = fuck you your not allowed to drive the train
Would be a B-unit
its a b-unit with extra steps
Cant remote the DE6
This functionality has been removed for the DE6 with the Simulator release.
If you want to remote a DE6, you must MU it with a loco that can remote, either a DE2 or a DH4.
or use a mod
i mean if the snail is a DE2, can the snail be RC connected and have the slug as a motion device? a DE6 but cheap and sketchy?
yesn't
Still uses the de2 motor
Which last time I tried de2 slug combo I stalled with empties going to frc
never again
I thought the slug would make the de2 a viable hauler. I was mistaken
No just decreases chance of overheating
Still have the same power
As the slug only have traction motors
Ooo what does DVT stand for?
Driving Van Trailer.
I mostly associate that specific phrase with British control cars from an era where having passengers and the driver in the same carriage was not allowed.
Especially the back end of post-HST electric express trains had these kinds of carriages. Like the Class 90 + Mk 3 consists, or the Class 91 + Mk 4 "Intercity 225" consists
The relevant rules have since been sunset, so the Mk 5 coach family has a regular control car.
If anyone is curious Wiz is doing this
kool
i really want to drive a train with a snail and a slug now
I want to drive a train with this, and the DE3
What % done is it
The model is done but the code isn't
This and the slug will run the de6’s pockets
You're giving me nightmares.
when snail progress
Probably a ccl thing to be honest
Unless somebody wants to car charger a cab on the slug then make us use the wireless remote for controls
i think this should be added as a car changer thing, working like a slug
Snail and slug are fundamentally different
Slug has traction motors and no prime mover, snail has a prime mover and no traction motors
bro just made a slug for the DE2
But what happens if you combine the snail and the slug + the new control panel?
Do you just get a DE-6 with an underpowered engine?
Temu locomotive
i don't want it. I NEED IT. for it to be useful we need upgraded de2 wiring and breaker so it doesn't melt from the extra power considering it already try's to melt itself.
Or, it could be “Crap, my DE2’s lost its engine, I need the Snail to get moving again” power
But you’d need another locomotive to get the engine to the locomotive?
Enter the fact that it could be a crew car thing spawned with the radio.
