#DS Promptober 2025
685 messages ยท Page 1 of 1 (latest)
#Promptober is here! This time I included two free spaces, for people to make whatever they want (or to even take that day to rest). As usual, please use the #promptober or #ttrpgpromptober tags when you post! please also don't feel shy about tagging me in them so I can reskeet.
Don't be a bummer before we've even started!
I'm ready to get SPOOKY ๐งโโ๏ธ
I think it'll be a fun challenge adapting some of them to DS
sorry, that was the ontological evilness within me
im excited for day 10 for no particular reason
๐๏ธ
Same haha
Day 1: Free Space
I'm in the middle of writing a supernatural mystery/folk horror novel that heavily features witches, and I wrote an important witchy chapter of it today, so I thought I'd start off with an appropriately witchy item!
Already tweaked the wording slightly ๐ Perils of late-night posting!
Day 1: Free Space
Star-Eyed (Complication)
Whether born in the astral sea, or simply under a wishing star, you're infused with the power of the space between worlds.
Benefit: You gain the following ability. In addition, if another ability you use lets you teleport, you can teleport up to 2 additional squares.
Walk the Starry Path
You can step into the Astral briefly, like it's just next door.
Type: Maneuver
**Keywords: **Magic
**Distance: **Self
Target: Self
Effect: You teleport up to 2 squares.
Drawback: You aren't born to walk in gravity like this. While on a manifold, you automatically fail potencies and tests to avoid falling prone.
it says free space so
I love it
Love the flavor too
It does correct for itself which is funny
Love the image of a stumbling Jack Sparrow type who can't walk upright on solid ground just blinking around everywhere
It's giving "eldritch creature in humanoid guise"
in my mind a character with the complication looks normal but then their eyes are like looking into the night sky
Day 2: Spell
Behold! Quicksand!
I'm not a designer but I hope a ranged grab isn't game breaking? Lmk what y'all think
Breaking up a potency like that feels weird to me. Love the "!?" in the ability name tho
##Day 2
Spellscroll crafting:
As a consumable treasure crafting project, choose an Elementalist signature ability with the magic keyword. When you read this spellscroll as a Maneuver, you can immediately use the inscribed ability, causing the scroll to burn away.
Keywords: Magic, Scroll
Item Prerequisite: Pen ink infused with quintessence
Project Source: An Elementalist's study notes
Project Characteristic Roll: Reason
Project Points: 45
You took my idea ๐
This seems pretty strong, but I don't think it's too strong! Might be good at 5, mainly thinking about flying enemies getting knocked down with this
Awesome idea, the flavor is clear and killer!
Oh snap ur right- I think Iโll change the target to a creature on the ground
That makes more sense, but I think only Prone can drop flying creatures
Missed the rules revision where Speed 0 drops flying creatures, wow
I wonder what the most degenerate combo an elementalist can do with this is
Day 2: Spells
I think 1 HR might be too high a cost for these but I also think it probably breaks the game in too many ways ๐
Originally I thought I'd stay on spooky theme the whole time but I think I'll just go with the flow and see what comes up
Oddly finding myself needing to resist the urge to skip ahead
These are great! Looking forward to seeing what else people come up with!
Day 2: Spells
Wand of Whimsy
(Trinket, Implement)
This colourful wand inspires a sense of recklessness in those who use it. Whenever you roll for a Signature or Heroic ability with the Magic keyword, you gain the following benefits based on the number rolled on each d10, gaining both benefits. If you roll doubles, you instead receive thrice the result.
1: You gain 1 Heroic Resource.
2, 4, 6, 8: You gain 1 surge.
3, 5, 7, 9: You gain temporary Stamina equal to your highest characteristic score.
10: Confetti explodes out the wandโs tip.
jonas youre fast as fuck
Kachow
this should probably be limited in some capacity because its very very powerful rn uncapped
Want a whole Wand of Wonder now. Wonder how you could make such a nonsense item in DS without all the spell effects to pull from
Oh yeah for some reason I read it as a consumable ๐
initially i was doing a full 10 part table but then i thought about how annoying it would be in practice as a lookup
so odds/evens with special stuff for 1 and 10 instead
honestly the easiest fix
I'm gonna make the full 10-part table with the joke version at some point. This one is just actually useful lol
Day 3: Potions
Potion of Djinnโs Ire
(2nd Echelon, Consumable)
When you drink this potion, for the duration of the encounter, you gain an additional move action on each of your turns, but [your Stability is reduced by 2 but worded so it works with negatives kinda bc i cba to find the precedent].
Potion of Greater Heling
(3rd Echelon, Consumable)
When you drink this potion, you take 5 poison damage that canโt be prevented in any way. If this damage would result in you dying, instead you regain Stamina up to max.
Lmao
the second one is a bonus based on a campaign inside joke with the witchy character, whose player left a potion of โhelingโ (poison) on another pcs sheet during a session they missed
Whenever you are force moved, the forced movement distance gains a +2 bonus.
that one
Is it a maneuver to drink?
yeah thats covered under the Use a Consumable core maneuver though right
You're absolutely right it should be, and yet every consumable says it anyway. Never realized that shouldn't be necessary
im typing these up on mobile if you couldnt tell hence my lack of professionalism
and precedent checking
Lol no worries, not giving hardline critique, just thinking through em
For my own benefit to understand templating better
the ex-mtg designerrrr
Anyway it's neat! Seems hard to exploit, drawback seems balanced. Very clean and cool
Dig the flavor too, "Djinn's Ire" is rad
Day 3: Potions
I swear I was planning to do this before you made the wand ๐
suing
Day 3: Potions
When an unstable potion is left too long on the shelf of an alchemist too distracted or dead to tend to them properly, they can congeal and sometimes gain sentience. These potion-oozes grow and seek out other ingredients to match their mixture.
Potion-ooze recipe:
Take 1 potion of 1st echelon and an Ooze statblock from the Delian Tomb.
Swap the Oozes's malice ability with a thematically appropriate application of the potion (either direct or inverted) with the same target and distance information. Instead of malice that ability costs the potion-ooze an equal or greater amount of stamina.
Example: Take the Creeping Sludge monster, and the Growth Potion. Increase the Ooze's size to 3. Replace "Oozen Grasp" with "Shrinking Sludge". All targets in the area are subject to an Agility potency vs shrinking to size 1T and being weakened (save ends). This ability costs 2 + the number of targets shrunk in Stamina. This does not trigger "Split".
Ooh cute!
Day 4: Dark Woods
Acorn of Power (Consumable)
As a maneuver, you can throw this acorn to the floor and cause a Tree of Power to sprout in unoccupied spaces within 5 of you.
Neat!
Day 4: Dark Woods
Idk how to balance the EV on DTOs at all
So please tell me if this is off lol
Oh man thatโs so cool
The expanding aura tied to how big the trees are is just fabulous
I think there's probably a more elegant way to handle the size and aura that way but I couldn't find it lol
But ty for the kind words!
Day 5: Masquerade
Suit of Impeccable Taste (Trinket, No Armor)
This incredibly finely tailored suit is unruffled no matter the situation (except where it's literally ruffled). You gain the following ability:
Unhand Me, Ruffian!
You can't help but make a great impression.
Type: Triggered Action
Keywords: Magic
Distance: Ranged 10
Target: Triggering creature
Trigger: A creature deals damage to you.
Effect: The target is charmed by you until the end of their next turn. A charmed creature treats the source of their charm as an ally for the purposes of Area abilities, and has a double bane on Strikes that include them.
Day 5: Masquerade
Channeling one of my other favorite TTRPGs for this one...
Day 6: Myths
My first homebrew subclass: **Loremaster **
Inspired by greek myths and homer's epics. Balance is almost certainly off,, but it was fun anyway!
Since it's EoT it literally doesn't do anything, does it? It just ends right after the strike resolves, since the trigger is being damaged rather than targeted.
so true
i meant to make it end of next turn
Awesome idea!! I've struggled to think of more Troubadour subclasses but this would be a great one. I love the image of Mortal Folly with the classic, literal meaning of "deus ex machina" โ hoisting in an actor on a crane to play a god at the end of the play!
Is that where that comes from!? What a neat coincidence
Yep, that's the god from the machine, the machine being the crane they'd hoist in Dionysus or Zeus or whoever to go "Alright enough foolery lemme just fix everything" lmao
So it's both the literal and figurative origin of the term
Thatโs fabulous
Day 6: Myths
I have a solo problem
Technically I've failed at doing one every calendar day but I'm going to sleep now so this is MY calendar day
Just found this thread, this is so cool! I think I'm going to make magic items (trinkets and leveled items) for the whole list, since it's what I'd like to see in DS more of. Happy brewing folks!
Nice, pretty cool!
This whole statblock terrifies me
A+ for burn the skies
Was quite pleased with those villain actions ๐
Great to have you, happy brewing!
This is awesome. I've been meaning to get back on the horse for DS homebrewing and reading the homebrewing threads, and now I have no excuses. (And now I've written that publically, so now I'm on the hook too!)
Cheers for shouting it out in #ds_homebrew, @exotic forum!
Hell yeah, welcome!
Okay i made this for day 1. I hope you don't mind a post that's so much behind. It's late and I'm sleepy, and i haven't played the game yet, so let me know what you think about the numbers and stuff! This was very fun!
You're obligated to no one, I'm not running the show and neither is anyone else! It's all for brainstorming!
So, for some reason, blanket maneuver-teleporting on a magic item is limited to the 3rd-echelon Shifting Ring. I think because it effectively gives you a free way to get out of prone and restrained conditions. But there's also abilities like Displacer that let you do it with a condition at 1st level. So I think this is probably fine in that regard. Maybe a small restriction would be needed.
Love the idea and the blink-teleporting effect. I think the ethereal effect is also completely fine given stuff like Abjurer's Bastion. Honestly I could see this whole thing just existing. Nicely done!
Day 7: Secrets
"I'll keep it simple after the solo" I said. "I won't do anything that requires a lot of formatting" I said
I broadly agree, but that's why it lets you turn any magic/psionic damage the party deals into psychic! Surely a party can be expected to have some of those, right? Or are you saying that's still too niche
im fucking stupid dawg
its 3am i straight up missed half the damn ability
You're so good buddy lmfao
Look at how messy my 1am hydra is
We've all been there
Day 8: Spirits
Just a little something something to connect revenants with the transition between living and dead
Whoa. Somehow didn't occur to me to do individual ancestry traits. Sick idea and sick trait!
Is the intent that you use it once per encounter, or once every other encounter? Since you gain a Victory from it?
Thanks! Figured it would be a good warmup to do something smaller.
The intent is once per encounter, so that the player doesn't bog down the adventure by asking every single corpse their thoughts. I was torn on whether "end of the encounter" would be sufficient, and whether the gain a victory thing would be confusing.
Day 8: Spirits
1st Echeleon Consumable:
Elven Hot-Sauce
A potion of bubbling black liquid
Keywords: Magic
Item Prerequisite: 2 vials of shade-essence
Project Source: Texts or lore in Illyvric
Project Roll Characteristic: Reason or Intuition
Project Goal: 45
Effect: As a maneuver you can drink this potion and become ethereal. You ignore difficult terrain, cannot be grabbed, and attacks against you take a bane. In addition, you can phase through walls and solid objects, but cannot end your turn inside them.
At the end of each of your turns, take 2 fire damage for every round you've been under this effect.
You can end the effect as a maneuver by drinking milk.
Loving the ghost pepper nods ๐ถ๏ธ
Ohhh that's so smart lmfao
Thx!!
Day 8: Spirits
I was really tempted to go the alcohol route, but then I realized there's no traditional (undead) will-o'-the-wisp type enemy in the game!
It should probably have cold immunity
Thanks! I had the image of a player teleporting around and creating the image of a constellation, but it could also be done with swifting instead of teleporting, and dealing damage to enemies you pass through (instead of small AoEs).
You're right about the teleporting, I saw the ring but didn't notice it's 3rd echelon!
Yeah but Displacer does it at 1st level so it's probably fine. It's really cool!
Nice! I really like the Follow Me! action, though I would have maybe expected it to have a longer range so that these minions can be bothersome from afar. But I can imagine having these flying perilously near to an edge ...
Is there still a rule about negating all damage negates rider effects? I remember something like that at one point. It'd maybe be unfortunate โ though not off brand โ if cold immunity would negate the pull
Don't know or remember any rule like that, and thank Ord! The idea with Follow Me! is that they pull you adjacent so they can Detonate on you, and while I would have loved to give them a pull 10, I don't think that would fly on a level 2 minion ๐
That said I do think there's probably a more elegant version of this that combines the pull with the Chilling Phasing trait. I basically wanted the play pattern to be that they move through you to deal a bit of damage, then drag you along after them. Follow Me! could just skip the damage and work like that for the same effect
Oh, I didn't necessarily mean they would pull farther, only that they could pull from farther away! That said, pulling into a Detonate is a devious strat!
Yeah if they were farther away then they couldn't pull into adjacency. But there would be no harm allowing it anyway. It might as well be a Ranged 10. I guess I just wanted to enforce the play pattern lol, but it probably should be more open
Or they could get a captain range bonus instead of speed
The thought I'm having is that that way you could also use them to reposition enemies in a fight where they are pretty much just support, staying at a safe distance and aligning enemies for the Elite's line attack or something. But you're right, it might reduce the affordances of pulling into detonate, which feels important to them.
A captain bonus sounds really cool!
I reeeally just like the effect allowing them to add to the forced movement instead of the damage. But I can always use that elsewhere and make this more appropriate to its own fantasy
Recycle your darlings, as they say
My only knowledge of will o wisps is that they were the builder units in warcraft 3 for the elves i think. Yours are very cool! I like the "pull > die from damage > explode" strat
That's exactly why these ones explode ๐
I definitely think you should keep that free strike, it's one of the traits that make them shine!
Hehe. Shine
Just finished day 2 lol. Level 9 is probably too much but eh!
Neat! 9th level is crazy anyway so that doesn't seem that wild tbh
Oh I can see the Shadow or Fury holding that blade, smirking at the incoming magical inferno, saying "cute."
Great job on the implicit storytelling!
Thanks!
Day 9: Thriller
Maybe toughest prompt so far...not the one it took me the longest to think of, but the one that felt the least like a spot-on response. Still, happy with this!
My first attempt at one of these! https://discord.com/channels/332362513368875008/1401450137825448057
This is the first prompt I've had an idea immediately come to me. Not sure I'll have time to work on it for a bit, but hoping to put together a Revenant Radenwight Summoner type villain that makes both it's minions and heroes with low enough presence dance (i.e. area forces slide and debuff).
these numbers look about correct for a 6 person party to me
Ah great to hear!
Well, Colville reposted it, guess it being my toughest prompt was a good sign ๐
I'm too new to the game to use this, but after i get the hang of montage tests I'd like to come back and try them this way! Looks cool af
I think there's room for both in a game too, not every montage needs the same stakes
Just read this again, such a cool idea
Do Your items with "(x2)" mean that they need 2 successful skill checks to complete?
No, they can just be completed twice. So if you only tackle Psionic Viewfinders once, the Director still gains 3 Malice, vs 6 if you don't do it at all. Definitely something I can clarify better!
That was my 2nd guess, it's not clear but it's not completely UNclear either
More clear is always better
Made this for day 3. I had a lot of trouble making it a leveled item because it didn't fit the weapon/implement/armor categories, but I'm committed to the bit of making Leveled items for every prompt!
Famous glass maker saying
Frosted glaziers in shambles
There are generic leveled items like the Bloodbound Bands too! Love this a lot, awesome for a CA Shadow!
I just remembered that damage from treasures doesn't stack, you only use the higher number. I might go remake this so that it isn't restricted as much
Ok i cleaned it up a lot i think. Language and mechanics are simpler and cleaner now
God this thread is fun!
At levels 1-4 you fling vials to gain +1 typed damage to ranged strikes, and can use consumables a bit faster.
At 5 you can chug consumables to throw the vials at enemies
At 9... Oh god i messed up, you can make infinite free strikes!
Why is this so peak my dude
You're too kind ๐ It's reeeally messy and I'm pretty sure deals like triple regular damage output so it needs fixing up. But I'm glad you like it!
The numbers are the most easily fixable thing! It's a great idea and execution
Well done! And thank you for reminding me about Ashley's Threats and Opportunity montages, I've been meaning to try them out in play
The Thriller prompt was really hard. For the regular promptober, I'm sure you can do a lot of cool stuff, but I also found it very difficult for Draw Steel somehow.
I spent the full day struggling to come up with something, and though I had an idea it was definitely out of scope for a day's work. I've maybe come up with a way to reduce it to a bitesize enough thing to make, I'll see if I can type it up!
But first, the Moon prompt ... ... how many of us are brainstorming something to fight?
Me and @carmine talon lol
i joked about it but im not super invested in nesc finishing promptober
im busy creating psychic aberrations !!
Psychic mooneration
maybe if/when i catch up
Okay I have my moon entry 80% done but I'm running out the door (I am late because I was working on it lol)
Will post technically tomorrow
I may be many days behind, but i THINK I haven't fallen more behind since I started this, think I did one each day. This is my first time doing one of these month challenges, so fun!
Day 10: Moon
Alright the numbers here are probably way off and I cut out an attack last minute, but what if the Moon theme isn't something you fight but something you fight alongside?
(It only took me this many minutes to realise stuf was off, alright as close to real as I'll have it for now)
Day 10: Moon
While partly inspired by Willy, this is actually mainly inspired by a jam game I wrote and designed
@proven pagoda Here's the delayed-action thing I was working on
It's very messy and I think there's gotta be a better way to codify it but there it is ๐
Ohh yeah ๐
Day 11: Thalassophobia
Yay for learning new words! Something much smaller and simpler for today: a complication to let loose your inner Pinocchio
I like the delayed action idea! Reminds me of Danger Zone Actions someone proposed for D&D, which I always enjoyed as they make for secondary objectives during combat.
I've now also spent 20 minutes helping a hero who never was rescue the crownlands. Clever little pacing puzzles!
Haha glad you enjoyed
Yeah DS has a tiny bit of this (like 3 instances in the Monsters book); and I think it's a cool space to pull from
The only stat blocks I've read before this are the tutorial goblins, but this still makes sense and is cool af
Great to hear!
Ooo this is elegant and cool
Oh yeah super cool! The flavor of it letting you always know the nearest body of water is hilarious (and appropriate) ๐
positive feedback loop is such a fire way to invert the -vok ability to be constructive rather than destructive
Had nooo time to brew today and may not tomorrow. But I will catch up!
Was between this and a zoro/vigilante mask
I always thought Gray Fox was secretly beefy!
I don't know if this was your intent, but there's something really dramatic about how the mask doesn't just stop anyone from recognising you, but nobody can literally even know about you. As if you outside the mask never existed while the mask is on. That opens for some juicy existential crisis roleplay!
It says "no creature can know your secret identity", which I think means "they don't know that masked person = you", but your idea is cool. Like you literally lose your self in the mask!
Day 12: Liminal Spaces
Once I hatched the idea last night, I've been giddy with excitement for this chance to do something with the best Talent tradition, Resopathy
Thank you! I spent like 25% of the design time on just figuring out that name
its the thing-maker talent
akin to a conjuration wizard, ig
the best kind of talent
Maker and changer of things and terrain! I tend to lean more into the latter, though sometimes I wonder if that's me wanting to make Resopathy into something more or other than what it means.
From the Heroes book and the Talent class for 5e:
Day 12: Liminal Spaces
It's a bit of a stretch to call a hedge maze a liminal space but... it was the best I could come up with, plus I wanted to give a terrain monster a go. Thx to @exotic forum for the cool idea.
oh I can see some real fun fights going on in there
@exotic forum what program do you use for your formatting? It looks really nice!
Did it myself in InDesign!
It looks very good! I love the characteristics being off on the side and little icons!
Day 13: Abandoned Locations
Let's go to space!
UNISOL Station 36-B
Systems: Inactive
Risk Level: Critical
Crew Status: Unknown
Day 11: Thalassophobia/Thalassophilia
Catching up!
Trying to come up with something for #12 and I simply can't think of anything as cool as this ๐
Thank you!! I had a lot of fun making it
[sees a kraken]
โI know what I must do, but I donโt know if I have the strength to do itโ
Day 12: Liminal Spaces
As much as I want to make another montage challenge or terrain statblock for a Twin Peaks-style pocket dimension, I'll keep it simple this time
this is cool enough it almost makes me like the base polder
Trying to capture the feeling of that one scene from Thor Ragnarok where they keep teleporting between camera cuts
Okay yeah now Iโd actually play one
Day 6: Myths
i made a chimera mount
Sick!!
Day 7: Secrets
Turncoat (Complication)
The rest of the party doesn't know it yet, but whether willingly or not... you're a spy for the villain! Through whatever method, whether as mundane as letters or as magical as an enchanted mirror, you've been funneling information from the party to an external oppositional force.
NB: Remember that, ultimately, Draw Steel is a game about playing heroes - if you're going to take this complication, either be prepared to change characters later in the campaign, or (more likely) be prepared to ultimately side with the heroes in a dramatic triple-cross!
Benefit: Agents of your villainous patron want to sell your role, but ultimately aren't supposed to kill you. You have damage immunity 2 from forces of your chosen villain (while you haven't betrayed them...).
Drawback: Whenever you begin a combat encounter against forces of your chosen villain, the Director gains 1d3 additional Malice they state is from 'an unknown source' if pressed.
i do wonder if it should be 1d3 malice
yeah fuck it
Totally
Oh wow I entirely forgot/missed that Waterborn was a thing! I checked for deep and drowned etc but didn't think to check for ... water ...
Cool stuff! I love the thought of giving complications to people at later stages of play.
Day 13: Abandoned Locations
I've always wanted to try my hands at more DTO's.
(Edit: added a clarification, perhaps unnecessarily, to the Perilous upgrade.)
This is such a fun idea! And well executed benefits and drawbacks. Though there is a risk that they will telegraph your traitorous nature to the players if any of them have read this complication prior. So maybe it'd do best in a Director-facing resource, where they can show it only to those it pertains to. At least the first time!
On the other hand, some tables love leaning into the dramatic irony of knowing something that their characters don't know. They'll love it!
This is so insane, i love it!
I think this is very Draw Steel in spirit
I had no idea how hazards work until 2 minutes ago. After reading this, I think i get the whole concept. Very nice!
I made 3 leveled items today, hopefully i will manage to catch up until the end of the month!
Wow, you've been real productive!
I giggled a while at this magical 'bow' namely a gun. I love the idea of revealing secrets by attacking, but I personally feel that the point blank clause (close targets are hurt more) adds more complication than oomph. What's your cool vision for adding it, which I'm probably missing?
Loving the Herculean cloak! A great choice for mythical.
Day 13: Abandoned Locations
I think I'm finding that Foreshadowing is really the key feature of these, I find it difficult to make actions that feel interesting/fair without it. But Foreshadowing really makes it possible for both the players and monsters to make the most of the terrain. I'm gonna have to find a way to hard codify that
Also, great minds think alike lol
I liked the extra damage when knowing an enemy's secret, but you don't really get to do that often, and most of the time a tier 3 ability on a target (which let's you know a secret) means they die before you get to damage them again. So I gave it the range thing, because, well, the weapon is called whisper! You have to be close to someone to whisper (to) them!
About the "bow=gun", I love an odd fantasy gun or two in my games
The bell idea is very cool
I don't really get what Foreshadowing is doing. It means that the terrain action happens at the end of the round, instead of the start? But also nobody can tell what the affected area will be?
No, the opposite: everyone can tell what the affected area will be. You place the area on the map, and then the heroes and monsters both have the whole round to try and knock people into it!
There's some tricky order of operations here, mostly due to it being an ability and thus targeting creatures. You've got the order itself nailed, but there's some clarity questions with the wording โ it's not immediately obvious unless the reader is reverse engineering the order of operations themselves. There's a way to read Foreshadowing as basically "this ability happens at the end of the round", like Alex did.
On my end, I would probably mention something like visual cues in Foreshadowing, to make it clear that the signs are there from start of round. Alternatively, you could switch the targets to Special and then specify who is targeted in an "At the end of the round, each creature in the area ..." clause. Not because it doesn't work as written, but because either of those could make them easier to 'get' at a glance!
Yeah I've been trying to figure out the best way to codify it. I think I'm going to define it as a unique action type elsewhere, so it can be described more naturally, and then just tag the actions with it.
Was it clearer here? #1423084328446857308 message
I think it was, yeah! (Although admittedly I think I glossed over it entirely back when I first read it, due to it being the only feature in the left column. But that's just happenstance.)
Yeah that's just me wanting nice even screenshots for sharing lol
I just don't want to bloat statblocks with the same repeated text over and over
So the action or keyword type seems best
I get that. And I'm convinced you'll nail down a good and clear compromise with enough iterations!
I'm also a little unsure, like...if one action is foreshadowed, and the others aren't, you get back-to-back stuff happening without any mobility in between. So maybe I need to find a compromise
Oooh i get it, the phrasing makes sense now
And it will make more sense in the future!
Yeah that might be a little awkward, 2 events back to back
Yeah, that makes sense. Delayed action resolution is a bit of cognitive load, easily forgotten, and a feels bad moment when it is. That's probably why there's so little of it in the base game. And partially why I went with end of turn instead of end of round! But my effect is also controlled enough to justify that.
Yeah that was a great idea for the floor and very cinematic. But these will be a lot more broad
I'm wondering if a turn counter would work. So something with "Foreshadowing 4" goes off after 4 turns
okay now THAT sounds cool!
It feels like more to track but it avoids the stacking problem
There will still be overhead, but it's overhead that everyone remembers because it happens every turn (tick down the clock) not just "sometime later". And it can spawn tactical discussions of who gets to leave and who's in the best position to just tank it.
Btw, the Orcs have a Malice feature fairly similar to your collapsing floor. There, they went with just the one way of cancelling it (the Agility test). It's not as active as yours, but it's one and done.
(Also, is it perhaps unnecessary to have two stacking ways to mitigate the effect? Technically three, counting fall reduction.)
Wdym? Doesn't it work the same?
Oh but you can also move out of the way of this one. Good point
Itโs more to track but itโs in service to the awesome drama
The juice is worth the squeeze or something
i dont think theres as much utility of that as just leaving it as foreshadowing being you learn about it start of round and it impacts end of that round
Well it could be "Foreshadowing EoR" default and then some unique ones could do "Foreshadowing 2", so each side only gets one turn to maximize/minimize the effects. I think that could be cool
But I do think EoR is still prooobably the usual use?
The impetus was to assist mental overload and I'm not sure there's a lot I can do about that in any direction ๐
Day 14: Stars
I first thought I'd make a morningstar because that'd be a fun twist, but I didn't get any inspiration beyond that so here's a souvenir from Samwise instead
Oh snap I forgot the descriptive text! Oh well you get the point
Should this be 3rd Echelon? Maybe. But the Shadow Elves are 2nd Echelon and I look forward to them getting very upset
"this side of the horizon" is a very cool sentence
Day 14: Stars
Numbers may be off but I'm very proud of the exceution here
Very cool flavor, and the mechanics are presented in a way that backs up thr fantasy!
Green element doesn't really make a ton of sense for me but i guess it can heal/cleanse so it's okay
I'm also not familiar with high level Elementalist Persistent abilities but this one looks good!
I was just about to say, my 'thinking out loud' process was "why is this green" gets to the effect section "oh WOW yeah that's why!"
This is some super useful crowd control and support all at once!
You should be proud! It's very easily visualised, tells a story, and packed full with utility!
I made 3 more leveled treasures, see if you can spot the references/inspiration on 2 of them! Slowly catching up to the challenge after starting 8 days late. These are getting kinda wordy, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make in order to make 31 unique ones
Like most of @exotic forum 's stuff, you could easily see this in the book
Yeah high level elementalist abilities mix keywords in some weird ways. Like Magma Titan is Green, for example. So since this heals I figure it's close enough lol
Stop, you're too kind
These are neat! Is the first one Hades? Not sure about the other two
Moonstone axe is hades 2 yes! Happened to be playing it today
Beast Claw is a bloodborne weapon. The other one isn't anything
Ohhh I thought the Beast Claws were the Enkidu claws from the first one lol
But cool!
Shoulda known from the blood
Man I could have made great use of that moonstone axe in Monday's session! I like how much they inform a playstyle!
I never really used them much, forgot they existed. Simple gauntlets were my favorite!
Day 15: Free Space
Thought about what to do for this one all day. I really like the complications that provide clear story hooks, so here's one of those!
I love them too. I've actually made a character with the backstory that your complication describes! I'll be using this FOR SURE if the game ever sees the light of day
Good work!
Oh oh i forgot to send my stuff yesterday!
Day 13: "Abandoned Location" has me stumped. Can't think of a leveled treasure that fits the theme. If anyone has ideas feel free to share!
Hard to think of mechanical implications. Perhaps a flag from a fallen rampart?
Sounds dope, definitely sparked my imagination. In the meantime, I skipped ahead to day 14, Stars:
Day 16: Hauntings
This began with the idea of hearing voices but this time I spotted the existing complication in time. So here's a medium sensing the energy around you! It's a name.... starting with.... is that an E? R?
Ope, sorry for the @ in advance! I was also typing out a reaction to your stars.
You're catching up so quick! I'm impressed and a little bit jealous of your pace
I love love love 'aggression is the best defence' approaches, and this really feels like that. My talent would go crazy over it!
Hahaha it's okay, i figured it was a miss click. Thanks for the kind words!
This is cool, but why a lore test? Sorry if it's obvious!
I was torn on that, admittedly. It started as a plain Intuition or Presence test, but I didn't want it to become like a regular Persuasion test or Empathize test I guess. It's a supernatural perk not an interpersonal test, after all. So I went with lore to cover stuff like religion and magic and psionics etc. Not 100% on whether I prefer it really.
Neat, love more non-social negotiation interactions!
This is also SO cool, I love this a lot!!
Day 16: Hauntings
Idk if this is even worth an ancestry point especially with Bloodless right there but. Here we are!
Yeah the revenant getting only 2 points kinda sucks. This feature is cool, it could be a supernatural perk maybe instead? If you don't want it fighting for the revenant's limited space
It was almost a perk but between Familiar letting you do that and the Share Head complication, this felt like the only place left ๐
This is probably better suited as a perk regardless tho. But I think revenant deserves a more ghostly option
Yeah, a spectral revenant would be awesome. Maybe that concept could serve a whole mirror ancestry though?
kind of like how different Elves are different Ancestries. They're conceptually related, but significantly different at the same time
An alternate revenant signature could be cool
Or yeah a whole other ancestry
But I also want that thing of like the zombie who is also in tune with their own ghost
Purely to accomplish a character concept I have ๐
Oooh that sound cool!
I'd totally see that as a player option
There are already complications that use similar mechanics so it's possible
I guess this fits the "Abandoned Location" theme. Item may be kinda weak? Possibly
Neat interpretation!
Thanks, it took a while
This is a long one. Made a new tag/system for leveled treasures!
It's a tag for leveled treasures that serves a few different purposes:
- splits the Crafting of a leveled treasure (normally 450 points) into 3 parts of 150 points each, similar to the "imbue armor/weapon/implement" system. Makes it more manageable for lower level heroes to start using a cool item.
- it serves a slightly different fantasy than a normal leveled treasure. Instead of the item getting power when you reach a level, you must go out on a quest and find it's next Fragment each time you want to upgrade it (at levels 1, 5, 9).
- A hero can find the Base of a Fractured item really early, gaining pretty minor benefits akin to a 1st Echelon trinket, and be put on a path towards wielding a leveled treasure.
I made an item using this system from a previous fantasy ttrpg game I played as part of the Promptomber challenge, but you can slap this tag/system to any already existing leveled treasure with a tiny amount of effort (find a minor benefit for the Base). Feel free to use this or tell me how it could be better!
That's cool! I've also been thinking of allowing players to craft leveled weapons one tier at a time similar to imbued weapons. Breaking them down into fragments is a nice story idea which also scratches the old set collection itch.
I'm 100% on board with point 2, this is kind of Titles in magic item shape. Since you're restricted by finding the fragments, should the project point cost for fusing them maybe be a little less than regular imbuements? Then again, regular imbuements also have 3 ingredients to find.
I enjoy how you're building off of the bleeding condition. As written, you don't technically need to use the weapon to get most of its bonuses. (Is that intended?)
Which means it'll be easier to activate the effects if you have some other ability that causes bleeding to combo the weapon with. I kinda like that, it lets players feel smart about their ability choices. And the T3 bleed you inflict doesn't have a potency at all, which means it's always viable and nice!
Day 17: Blood
In the campaign I'm playing, I've been imbuing the weapon I'm using. I noticed there's fairly few options at later levels, especially if you didn't choose a Roman numeral enhancement, and some of those options overlap in a way that makes them fairly pointless to combine. So here's a couple more! They're probably too strong?
The morning sun has risen, and I didn't really enjoy where I landed on that weapon enhancement. So here's another take, as a bonus!
yeah, since imbuements need 3 different ingredients i figured it would be fine. Thanks for the analysis!
Yep! I think shadows get plenty of bleeds, and furies and censors get some too. The item itself is a port from a d&d item i had made for a campaign a few years ago, but the DS mechanics were sooo much more interesting to play around with
havent played at high levels so I never noticed the lack of high level imbuements. I went to check:
both at level 5 and at level 9 there are 4 weapon imbuements that dont need a previous imbuement. Weird!
Prosaic is so cool! Overextending could be named overexerting maybe? But it's soooo cool, very nice fantasy and simple mechanic. Regarding Bloodletter, i don't have enough experience to speak with confidence, but if high level combats only last for 3-4 rounds, it might not be worth it, as the damage would be kind of slow. Maybe it could increase the damage of bleeding you inflict or something?
oh lol
your idea is way more unique haha
nice update!
great stuff
Thanks!
Yeah, 4 per upgrade should be enough on paper, but I feel several of them play around with the same mechanics in non-complementary ways. For example, for my Wingbane (1) bow I probably shouldn't pick Imprisoning (9), since one relies on the creature moving and the other restrains them. And I won't pick Windcutting since it's a melee enhancement, so all of a sudden my choices are down to two with an asterisk. And by the way, if you're going Imprisoning (9) you renders Silencing (5) entirely useless.
Right? And while it's more brutal in some ways, it lets Solos (and support monsters) use their End Effect abilities still, which wouldn't be possible with Bloodletting (since they target Save Ends effects).
oooh that's very good thinking!
i think matt himself said (either on the Delian Tomb actual play or on a Cry Havoc stream) that one of their next books should be a book of treasures. It would be amazing honestly
the amount of treasures in the book is like my biggest complain (even though its quite small still)
Yeah, more treasures and titles are among what I look forward to most, along with more DTOs because they're so fun
What's a DTO?
Dynamic Terrain Object
Oh that's an elegant expression of a possession! Well abstracted!
this promptomber thingy is so cool
i keep learning stuff from other creators and applying them!
Another busy weekend for me but I will catch up once more!
Loving all the awesome stuff y'all are making, glad to have you on this journey!!
Almost caught up, only 2 days behind!
Oh that's fun, loads of aggression from a bleeding heart!
For the 5th level, is it when you make a creature bleeding in this way, or whenever you make a creature bleeding? It's a little ambiguous, could be interpreted either way. Using either of those italicized alternatives would make it clearer which you mean.
Busy weekend for me too, and Sorcery didn't give me much inspiration. Wizard's Tower is basically the same prompt lol ๐ I'll try to cobble something together for both today before bed.
It's a simple "when you make a creature Bleeding", meaning "in any way". Thanks for the feedback!
The prompts are getting tough for me as well hahah
I would have only interpreted it that way, had it not been right after a way to make someone bleeding! (Actually, just changing the order of those two sentences would also make it doubly clear
)
Behold: I bring you the magic days!
Day 18: Sorcery
They fly now?! They fly now!
(see also #1423084328446857308 message)
Day 19: Wizard's Tower
Okay so we have a couple of Malice options for the monster bands, and a couple of shared generic malice options. But what if we could have some specific shared malice options that relate to a region, area, or location? Of course we can!
Day 17: Blood
Back on the catchup train!
This is really cool! I'll have to try something like this to go along with my big terrain objects!
Good point! Thanks!
Love this idea. Malice + Lair Actions
Air Thick With Magic is a TPK in the making with any hordes or minions that deal typed damage
Yeah, I pondered if it might be. There's some precedence in the devils' malice and that lasts until end of encounter which this doesn't, and several in-combat stuff goes as high as weakness 10 but doesn't target all heroes.
I toyed with picking a number of heroes based on the malice spent instead, but that got messy.
Maybe it should just be, +1 for every 2 malice spent beyond 3 or something
It's also not as bad with the devils bc they're top of echelon 2, so the heroes can tank more damage. Deploying the tower against 1st-echelon heroes is probably game over for someone, even just until end of round. I do love it as an effect tho
I mean it's also something the Director would have to abuse on purpose so it's not like ontologically bad
But we all know there's at least one killer GM out there who would ๐
Flavor of the whole thing is great as well
Maybe the clean and simple solution is simply that Location Malice should declare an Echelon, much like the demons/undead/war dogs. So there would probably be a less punishing version for Echelon 1, and this'd be the E2 table
Oh yeah for sure for sure
That's why I gave my big terrain a level lol
Anyway still very cool
Day 20: Lost Book or Knowledge
I have an idea for day 20: basically an artifact tome of prophecy which, once per level as a downtime activity, lets your character ask any one diegetic question directly to the Director, and they must give you a brief but truthful answer. That said, the rest of its story and features deserves some more elaboration so I'll hopefully get back to it and finish it once my other deadlines are more in order.
In the meantime, enjoy this little retroactive addition I made to day 18: Sorcery!
Day 21: Sword in the Forest
Perhaps I've bitten off a little more than I can chew in this one. It started with me wanting to make a Nature Warrior kit, to complement the other magic/psionic kits. My mind drifted to Princess Mononoke and, thinking of her spear, I realised there isn't a 'spear and shield' kit โ so I leapt at the chance. I think the resulting kit is evocative, but might be trying to serve too many fantasies at once?
EDIT: The flat damage per tier should be 3 / 5 / 13, I forgot to adjust based on the new kit bonus!
As a PbtA addict: looooooove this idea
Awesome!!
Ooooh this is great! Not stretched to thin between the different fantasies it serves, I believe. Just great! I'd totally pick it!
Made this leveled item for "wizard's tower". Might be broken, maybe the pillar should require a maneuver?
Very cool! Finally I can play as Aeolyxria!
Alternatively, you could claim it's a free maneuver โ that would let stuff like dazed turn it off.
If you turn it into a full maneuver, I'd suggest testing out what happens if you go all the way: separate it from the 'when using a supernatural ability' clause, into its own maneuver that you gain and can just do while wielding this staff. That'd leave the player with some flexibility and not make the writing more complicated than it has to be.
Another aspect of it being a full maneuver is that you're not elevating the pillar further with a free strike or signature ability granted by your neigbourhood's friendly Tactician. (That might be true for free maneuvers too?)
Then again, if the enemy finds you too powerful in your elevated position nothing stops them from attacking the bottom square of the pillar, which I'd assume could topple it?
Is aeolyxria a named dragon knight?
Yes of course, if it's a maneuver it would be free of other restraints. Maneuvers are pretty useful!
She's one of the draconian enemies in Monsters. Not explicitly a dragon knight, might be from elsewhere
Great points
Just checked them out, their elevate ability is pretty much what I have made here lol. Thanks for the info, very useful
I don't think the free pillar is an issue tbh, seems cool
Like it's probably safer to make it a maneuver or something
But it's really funny not to
I will be happy to push you off lmao
Since it's locked to being under yourself, unlike Aeolyxria who can summon them in many places, the abusability is fairly limited imo
I think the proposed version where it's an independent maneuver is also good
But I like the interaction with abilities and forcing you to be creative and clever with it
Maybe this is the item she's carrying!
If it's a free maneuver you take when you use a magic/psionic ability, would that be usable outside your turn? IE when you make a signature ability because of a tactician?
Couldn't find anything in the rules, they've steered clear of such interactions as far as i can tell
Free maneuvers are only on your turn
That would be good
But also the off-turn pillar is still very funny
Thanks!
Day 18: Sorcery
Here I am still catching up, have a magic broom
Ugh, it's so creative!
It has an action, a move action, and a death effect, all flavorful and simple
0 fat on that monster!
Me @ the Tactician
I'm not 100% sure on how the effect of Dust Up is supposed to work. Does it essentially deal bonus damage if you have temporary Stamina?
Uhhh
yesss...yes I suppose it does
I don't know...how I wrote that without thinking about that ๐
That should probably be something different
Well, I guess that works
It's cool and probably unique, i say keep it
Yeah I mean if I was gonna change it I'd make it say the target loses any remaining temporary Stamina
That might be too rough Idk
Day 19: Wizard's Tower
Anyway here's wizardwall
I wonder if the temporary stamina removal works before or after the attack. You might wanna specify that
Only change I'd maybe do is put it before the roll so that it triggers even if the hero only has, say, 3 temp stamina when attacked
Agreed
It's after as written yeah
That sounds crazy punishing but then again temporary Stamina is really good in this game so maybe it's fine haha
Does it really? As written it doesn't remove all temp stamina, only 5. And it doesn't overflow into your actual stamina, even though the power roll damage might.
Removing 5 temp stamina and doing 3-5 dmg doesn't sound especially crazy
Yeah, what hadnerfaln said
Oh, except it no longer requires the potency. That's a big point, especially as a horde monster
Yeah the horde part is key
I could still word it to lose the temp Stamina before taking the damage but keep the potency
That's fine with me
Beep boop
looks great!
Day 20: Lost Book/Knowledge
Void elementalists are so cool
i love giving surges other uses!! i love coming up with new scalable ways for a pc to use surges !!!
that said i do think the ability probably wants a way to generate surges if its giving you a new way to spend 'em bc how many surges you have access to is really class dependent
oooh this is wicked cool
Day 21: Sword in the Forest
No idea what's up with this one tbh
Day 22: Summoning Circles
This one was requested/inspired by someone on Bsky!
this is sick as fuck
i love that the benefit is small enough that you arent necessarily pressured you just spam the same thing over and over but it rewards it
also i enjoy what wont be a ton
Yeah I was definitely worried about it encouraging spam
Since you usually only get 3 actions I wasn't sure if it would be enough to get damage value (I took off the damage bonus for that reason)
But I think it also makes it more fun with allies who can give you extra attacks and stuff which fits with the theme
What Isn't is also probably too boring/simple (surprise is so rare) but I was staring at that for like 30 minutes trying to figure out what effect to do lmao
Day 23: Aliens
Aaand we're caught up again. Someone tell me if this is too punishing lol
Oh it should probably do something if you have that trait already
Lmfao
If you already have that trait, you can forgo gaining the surge to use it as a free maneuver once per turn.
Is that crazy
This is VEEERY cool! Theme and mechanics are tied in a very neat way
The item prerequisite would be a bother and a half to obtain hahaha
Not as hard as you might think!
So cool. Every action is foreshadowed which solves the problem of "2 actions in a row" if you have a foreshadowed action followed by a normal terrain action. I like that the "special parameters" are made clear from the start. IE imagine you can choose to go prone before action 2 activates
Not too crazy. Here's my tiny editing pitch: You gain a surge if you use the ability successfully (if you actually detect something). If you already have that trait, it boosts the range, so it's easier to use
Regarding the drawback, do you get your recoveries back?
I'd think a drawback of "you don't take a respite activity" would suffice honestly
I'm not really a fun of the last clause, about being punished more for having more victories tbh
This has been my harshest criticism yet in this channel lol
Range boost was my first thought for it but eh 5 squares tends to be a lot
I'm not sure getting 10 squares is worth the complication for a human
Needing to actually detect something for the surge is a good edit
Originally the drawback was more like Evanesceria, where you have an 18% chance of not taking a respite activity every respite. This is worse because you don't even get your Recoveries back, but it's also a lower chance of happening (usually) and once you do wander off you're safe until you go back out adventuring again
So it depends on the campaign style, if you take a lot of short respite blocks it's definitely worse
And I am also not sure about being punished for having more Victories but it felt tame without
The drawback should probably be completely different
Life happened, i fell behind a bit. This item was fun to create but I haven't done the math, it might be busted
+1 HR is probably nuts yeah but I love the flavor
Also, 1 heroic ability per echelon might be a lot to lose or it might be trivial, couldn't tell you right now haha
I thought the +1 HR is ok for level 1/2 because you lose 1 ability which is a big cut of your maximum. But further on it gets easier and easier
Anyway, I have started actually putting my amateur creations in an Indesign doc, might end up being cool, will share results here if it's okay!
Day 24: Colossal Beast
I was gonna make another solo, but...I'm too busy. Lmfao
This is way more interesting than a solo, methinks!
This is very creative, love it
I might be off on this but wouldn't Repair Arcane Seals be an opportunity instead?
Also Scale the Beast seems to me almost identical to the using your "turn" on the montage to help another person. Maybe you could give the Locked thingy below it to sweeten the deal?
Love the Locked task ideas, not sure if you came up with them
Oh... yeah Repair Arcane Seals should be adding rounds since it's a Threat, good catch!
And also excellent point on Scale the Beast lmao. I think I was imagining that there was still some importance to the number of tasks completed, like counting successes during a normal montage. Somehow completely forgot that the whole point of this is to replace that ๐
Consequences of late-night homebrewing
Hahah it's a very good idea anyhow
This is an item inspired by the manga "Kagurabachi". The level 9 benefits might not be smart enough to justify the stamina penalty, but i really like having that penalty there. Any suggestions? Also, I'm not sure of Spider is ok balance-wise
Spider on a maneuver with no cost is maybe a bit much but mechanically I don't think it's too far off, short range, small cube, physical potencies are more commonly resisted
Damage penalty at level 9 is hard to speak to
Probably the two abilities aren't strong enough to justify it but then one combat comes along where they are and suddenly you win a fight you were losing
it's supposed to be a tramp card yeah. Thanks for the review as always!
Day 25: Cryptid
Number 37, calling number 37...
This is very cool, even tho i have no idea what it is a reference to
i assume it is a reference to something
Sure!
Day 26: Trail Cams/Found Footage
This one's a hard one for Draw Steel but I like this idea!
That's really interesting, huge shenanigans potential
hit their ass with the pokemon encore
@polar cloak Glad you like this one lmao
I'm a simple all-seeing [redacted], what can I say ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
Boop!
I've kind of stopped believing I will ever be less than 5 days behind hahah
The self imposed challenge of making only leveled treasures has gotten quite difficult at this point lol
Worthy though! Game needs more treasures!
Schedule's finally clearing up a little so I can breathe and try to catch up! Starting with going through all that's happened while I've been gone
I'm loving the flavour of the blade, as something that negates the happening of something. What wasn't, what isn't, what won't be โ that sounds so cool! Adding names to the tiers of an item is so clever, it does so much for flavour. Hard to mirror the negation theming in functionality though; going by the effects, I think these names could've been what was, what is, what will be and I would have been none the wiser? With the exception of what won't be!
Now you're getting somewhere with the foreshadowing! This looks elegant and super easy to use. There's maybe a slight risk that it's too elegant, a little easy to miss at a glance? But overall it's clearly starting to reach that point you wanted it to!
Thematically, I love this. And I think the idea of wandering off is very evocative, but agree with Cauldron that not regaining your recoveries feels very punishing. There's a clear risk that you have to play a full 'adventuring day' asking to respite when everyone else is just revving up to go.
- What if instead the character is absent-minded, and so starts surprised in every combat where they lose initiative?
- Or maybe something that plays along with the focus on surges, where if you have too many surges at once you get some kind of mental overload?
The flavour here is really fun! I'll remember this item if I introduce a party to a hag, it seems right up their alley. I'd probably give them 1HR at the start of combat instead, that's like starting with one more victory than everyone else and you get all the other stuff. Especially at later levels where you have more heroic abilities than you have action economy to use on them
This was actually intentional, and it even tripped me up when I was making it because I kept coming up with the wrong kinds of effects for the names lol. But the idea is, it's a Blade-That-Wasn't... which definitely is, it's right there in your hand. So all the features are their opposites too.
Buuut it might be better for the narrative of the item to just go with the flavor as written rather than being cheeky about it lol
And yeah I love naming the effects, someone in the Jams of the Timescape inspired me to start doing it. In 5e one thing I loved about the magic item design was all the abilities had flavorful names. Now titles get that, but not items. We're bringing it back!
Yeah I'm a little worried about that too. But I think most if not all terrain actions will be foreshadowed, so it will probably only be a problem if people accidentally foreshadow the remaining ones lol
I like both of those effects for a complication a lot and definitely will steal them ๐ But I do want Strange Lights to interact with respites. I think I'll try a different formulation though, I had initially drafted something where you get a building chance of wandering off the longer you go without searching for your missing piece. Might go back to that
Maybe there's some inspiration to be had from one of the perks in Fallout: London! When you go to sleep (here: respite), there's a random chance that you end up somewhere entirely different than where you started it, and you have no recollection of how you got there. That gives the Director carte blanche of how dramatic (or silly) each separate occasion becomes. Maybe you immediately start the first encounter and the party must come to rescue you! Maybe you wake up in the baker's bed, and where the hell is the baker?! But no โ this time you come to consciousness in the midst of eating pig feed in a pen!
https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2024/07/4eec2-17223260447165-1920.jpg?w=1600
Ooh that's a really neat (and funny) idea
Is this meant to focus on one creature at a time? Or happen once and then go inert? Otherwise, as written it's basically a daze mine for everything that comes near until EoE
Oh having just made an earth elementalist, I'd have jumped at the chance to use this for some extended range on my abilities
wait, that's brilliant! Elegant way to do what I meant to; I wanted it to be a "gain 1 victory at the end of each respite that can't be turned into XP" but it was an aesthetically awful thing to read on an item. I love you
I saw a negative perk like that in Kingdom Come Deliverance. It was very chaotic indeed, +1 to using something like it
what do you think of the "target a second creature with melee abilities by paying +50% HR" thing? Is it busted? Clunky? Levels 5 and 9 are supposed to have weak-ish effects because this scales with your hero, did I achieve that?
It probably sounds fairly strong? It's effectively 50+% off your second ability use, potentially multiple times per encounter. And how does it interact with the "melee is ranged" part of the weapon?
Power-wise, I haven't played enough high level stuff (only sporadic playtest sessions beyond level 4) to tell, really. Honestly it's partially why I've been avoiding making leveled items for the prompts myself!
I'll clear the language up and rethink a few things, thanks!
Yeah compare to the Harmonize trigger for troubadours which is 1-for-1 cost on another target, since you are basically just using the ability again. This is better because it works on anything, but also a bit worse because generating enough HR to afford it is slower than two heroes generating HR separately. So it's definitely crazy strong, but I think workable
Thanks for the feedback. Made this updated item after thinking about the fantasy/playstyle I want to invoke with it. The "twin spell" wasn't really important to me, the "magically punch people 10 meters away" is the core of the item.
Also cleared up the language of the mechanic for gaining range on melee abilities
Now they have a "floor" of Melee 3/5/10 Range
Looks a lot cleaner to me! And the versatility of increased melee distance should not be underestimated. The added target for heroics makes much more sense at 9th where everything is superhero stuff anyway
9th level gets craaazy
Im very proud of myself for making this item for the "summoning circles" prompt. They are circles you wear on your wrists that summon your hands at a different location lol
Ohhh I didn't even get the gag...nice one
thanks hahah
Day 23 Aliens: Gravity Gun (portal gun but with sliding) and Day 24 Colossal Beast: Titanspine Cleaver (smack people with the undead spine of a giant or something)
Ooh, Gravity Gun is very clean, the maneuver to instantly prone a target is maybe a bit too good (especially against fliers) but I love the flavor and the simplicity of the effects, nicely done!
Titanspine Cleaver also very clean and cool
Thank you! Would you give the Maneuver a potency S or something?
Yeah at the least
Any other ideas? Maybe a size limitation, equal to highest characteristic?
Nahhh I mean I think potency is fine
Other items use potencies for stuff, usually average, but this one costs a maneuver
Neat. I haven't really differentiated w/m/s potencies yet. As in, when to use one or the other
Except for rolled effects obviously, tier 1/2/3 potency w/m/s is ok usually
Ye
Day 27: Dreams/Nightmares
This hit me like "Oh that's a great idea!" and then I really struggled to actually pull some effects together. But, I think this hits the beats I wanted
I'm getting close to finally having something for the Thriller day 9 thing, and it has ballooned to be 3 other prompts as well. I went pretty far afield with the concept and maybe gave myself a lot more work to make it happen. Likely gonna need to refine the numbers quite a bit from what I'm first landing on. I've got almost everything concepted but writing out the abilities and cleaning up wording. It is a Solo who's main focus is forced movement, but it's also two minion types and a DTO. Way more than I should have tried to make with my limited time.
Exciting tho!!
Potentially a little too ambitious, but I've at least had fun working on it.
I'm definitely going to need help laying it out better than a basic google doc.
this is actually perfect for a character i ran for in a campaign that no longer exists that would kick ass in draw steel LMAO
unfortunately i have nothing i could post i have made recently that pertains to dreaming and/or nightmares. what a shame
love the Domain feature. I was missing the Dreams domain from the core rules, very nice
the piety generator is ok, but i don't really see how the prayer effect connects to dreams hmm
It was all just a dream...they were over there the whole time!
Shared dream hahah. Like mass hysteria
I would have given out 1 HR but that's obviously too strong
I wonder if spending 1 piety to give someone 1 HR would be too much on a prayer effect
Maybe some psychic damage? That's kinda boring tho
fwiw teleporty illusiony stuff felt apt to me
Slowed or Dazed could be used as "make enemies sleepy" effects
Just a thought i had
Made this for Cryptid. Initial effect looks strong, but it's a leveled item with no numerical benefit so i think it's ok
It is done. Introducing Vincenzo, the Radenwight Necromancer (prompt 9 Thriller), his two summoned Minions Jitterbeasts (prompt 25 Cryptid)and Boo-gies (prompt 8 Spirits), and the DTO Tombstones (prompt 12 Liminal space). As I noted, I expect I'll have to refine the numbers on some of the abilities. This Solo encounter is intended to have a TON of forced movement, so much so that a significant portion of the damage will come from it.

HOLY! You put like 4 prompts in one, crazy
First pile of stuff I've made fully custom. I've done lots of tweaking and reflavoring, but nothing from scratch for Draw Steel before. Hopefully it passes the vibes check, but feel free to comment on the doc if something seems confusing, over/under powered or whatever.
I will be taking a proper look at this later, but awesome idea and I'm so glad you finished it!
Day 28: Gods/Goddesses
Here's my entry for yesterday, a bit late. Paying tribute to the GOAT Athena ๐
Day 29: Flowers
And here's today. Bit lackluster IMO but they can't all be winners (although I am very proud of "psiolet")
Love this, and you get my "Stamp of Approval by a Greek Person" hahah
Not sure if the negotiation buffs fit Athena, but its cool anyway
You don't think so? I wanted to hit Wisdom and War y'know, she's a strategist but sometimes that means knowing when not to fight
Happy with the stamp of approval tho hahaha
Awesome utility. Do consumables have a level? Or am i tripping?
They have an echelon, which determines the points needed to craft them. This is 1e
Greek gods were famously vengeful and easy to anger, didn't really do negotiations as far as I know. In more modern interpretations they might be more humane, but even then i wouldn't necessarily think of Athena as a negotiator.
However!!! I like your way of thinking! Good take honestly!
yeah i meant to say echelon. Didnt notice each echelon has different project points, nice
Yeah they all have their moments haha, some of her epithets make me think she's got it in her but I am absolutely influenced by modern versions
One of her epithets is "the deceitful" IIRC which seems wild to me
Ancient greek mythology has been compressed a lot, irl it lasted for literal centuries so each god has more than a dozen epithets that are very often contradictory
Meaning, every interpretation that at least tries a bit, is probably valid
Supposedly there is a temple (in Theseus's hometown or something) dedicated to Athena the deceiver, created by a woman who was deceived by the goddess into being... Well... Victimized by Poseidon. Weird story, feel free to delete the message if u want
Anyway, i had this idea for the last 24 hours and finally made it into something. Level 9 took me hours to come up with, let me know if you have any other ideas
It's a staff that makes people eepy
It's for day 27: Dreams/Nightmares, got cropped
I skipped day 26: "trail cams/found footage". Any ideas for leveled items on the theme?
I really struggled with that one too ๐
Maybe something stealth-related or memory-related? Like poring into found footage for answers?
Day 28: Gods/Goddesses. Decided to emphasize on the fact that the prompt is in plural form! This item is only usable by Conduits, it let's them access more domains, but they have to swap them out at the start of each combat. Level 9, as always, goes crazy power-wise
Aaand day 29: Flowers, done! I'm finally caught up for the first time (if you ignore the trail cams prompt, which I think I might just do sadly)
This is really cool
Feels very plausible
Day 26: Trail Cams/Found Footage
Totally!
Neat! Love the eyes, that's a cool twist on it
Day 30: Harvest
Had to do one more solo before the month was out...
๐ค
I'm getting really sick of solos being destroyed by dazed and slowed and restrained lol
I love every ability
You flatter me!
Any clue what you're gonna do for the final day?
Could be a cool ass montage test to summon the spirits or something. I think that's what halloween was about kind of?
I do like making those montage challenges
They're harder than I expected, fun challenge
This is a combo of prompts 30 and 31, Harvest and Halloween! A montage challenge and a 1st echelon consumable.

It is a few days until All Hallows Eve. There is tale of an evil that appears annually, slaying those that dare to go out, and sometimes ruining crops left out too late in the season. Stick around and help out the locals in the lead up, and make sure theyโre safe through the night. Recommended: ...
Great stuff! Love the Consumable
Day 31: Halloween
For a final sendoff, I decided to pay tribute to both the tradition of Samhain as a midpoint of winter and the mythos of the final girl as the last one standing before the dawn โ a Halloween twofer ๐
Just got finished with the final prompt too!
Ooooh i love this. I'm not a horror genre guy, but last girl is a great trope
Is the solstice ritual meant to say tier 2? It fits the theme maybe, but it'd be awkward in play, having to decide if you want to downgrade your roll outcome
Which, you can in the rules if I'm not mistaken
Great stuff nonetheless
I like that the Prerequisite mentions "dead or dying" allies, if it was only dead then it would practically never come up. Smart thinking!
Incoming screenshot avalanche:
Ooh! I didn't think about downgrading it actually, but yes it was meant to be tier 2, since the solstice is a "midpoint"...although...I guess it isn't lmao
Samhain is the midpoint
Being able to downgrade it is very funny, that pretty much just makes tier 2s into tier 3s all the time ๐ I'll say the RAI is it only counts if you roll it
For the last day of Promptober, i wanted to make something special. I've had a really fun time here, and was further inspired by the "treasures of the timescape" itchio jam, for which people made leveled item sets. I was too new to the system to take part, but this is my contribution!
First 2 images are lore, feel free to skip. The balance of the items might be all over the place, it's too late for me to check over again, but of course let me know of any recommendations
Lore:
Items:
Yeah I figured, it makes sense with the name
These are very cool โ no idea where the balance lies but gaining damage immunity with temporary Stamina, sending enemies to the shadow realm, and taking control of dead enemies are all very cool stuff I haven't seen in DS yet
Oh hahah, i missed that. I think if you put solstice = mid in front of people, nobody's gonna question it hahaha
Well I fooled myself with it lmao
Thank you for putting this whole thing up Jonas. I just moved to another country and it has been quite stressful, this little challenge/routine has helped me relax a ton
I'm so glad!!
And also, i love making stuff like that, but wouldn't have done so by myself since I'm so new to DS!! So fun!
My favorite thing about DS is how I can just write something crazy or cinematic and it works. It's such an easy, fun system to homebrew for
It's not the only system like that but it's probably my favorite for homebrewing of all the ones I've played, just because of how enjoyable the core chassis is
Although Lancer and messing with PF2e's action system comes in close
Just want to congratulate and celebrate everyone who participated, and especially @exotic forum and @prime hedge for finishing the full month of prompts! That's no small feat. Well done!
That deadline I had wore me down more than I anticipated, and then it felt like there were simply too many prompts to motivate me catching up. I don't want to necro the thread repeatedly, but if I return to finish the ones I didn't I'll compile them in a single post sometime later this month.
I hope you find the time, your stuff is great!
Well...I don't know if I saved over a file or if Windows or Adobe screwed me over but I lost all my Promptober content lol
I have all the images I can work from, but not all the edits I had already made ๐
OOF
I was gonna redo em anyway, I just lost some important notes on some of the weirder ones, like the Hydra
Ah well, the impermanence makes em beautiful
Not the hydra!!
oof that sucks
Oh man what a loss Jonas. You had a bunch of great stuff in here, and I'm sure re-generating it and adjusting it would take some significant lift.
I was planning to reformat it all for a compiled release anyway, and honestly a lot of the notes were discussions held in here so I still have many changes logged. It's really only a few key ones (the hydra and terrains, mainly) that feel really lost
Ty for the kind words tho haha
It was this thread that pushed me to create for the sake of creating, not for specific needs in a campaign I'm running. I'll likely refine my Radenwight solo and try to playtest it in the Homebrewery. I've been on and off tweaking it and cleaning up the language for that to happen sometime soon.
That's sick!! Yeah I'm looking forward to that playtest!
So I said I'd dump all of these together in a big clump come the end of the month, but I have to double check this one: is it entirely stupidly broken?
(Of course once I ask this I immediately start messing with the malice ability)
Not saying to spam the channel with it, but it's certainly way more effective for people if these creations are all posted on their own instead of hidden away in here ๐ Helps with searchability
Unless there's a plan to make a unified thing at some point?
I intend to make mine into a unified thing at least! If other folks wanted to get in on it I'd be happy to make a full packet
Numbers are a bit all over the place for a level 6 enemy but love the vibes and flavor
Living Maze and especially the Malice spend is really cool
Definitely get that! Since they were all one day prompts, many of them haven't yet gotten the full love and attention that I would want before letting them lose where everyone finds, uses, and references them. So this thread has been a little bit of gauging impressions, before polishing the great ones! At least in my eyes.
Now, that could of course have been done in #ds-homebrew or similar, too, but I've leaned towards putting them here since they are all based on this theme rather than necessarily "solving a need". But maybe it's time they start standing on their own feet rather than necroing threads.
Same, I'm thinking of doing a hightlights compilation on my end. I'm not against a full combined packet either!
I imagine the damage is the prime outlier there, right? I'm trying to take into account its passive feature, which let's it throw you through stuff at 1 forced movement per square while still dealing the full damage. That can explode quite high, if you slam them into a cliffside or first raise a full thicket via living maze
The damage seems low but the stats seem high, level 6 non-leader shouldn't have more than +3
Although I think you actually correctly accounted for forced movement damage in a way that the books don't
So the damage is fine probably
Huh, I thought I based its stats on the Draconian brute but I was looking a lot at the Shambling Mound at the same time. I'll take another look, thanks!
Well, it took me several months too long (thanks for all the weird crashes, Adobe), but if anyone here's interested, I've finally published all my prompts in one place
https://discord.com/channels/332362513368875008/1487179830523990157
As a itchio follower, I got an email already heheh. It looks great, gj!
It was a rude awakening for me too hahah, I started out trying to bring my promptober collection into layout back in November, and just forgot about it after a few days... I hope you'll inspire me to publish them too
