The option to customize name, description, notes, etc. on Free Strikes isn't working like for other abilities. Melee and Ranged Free Strikes both behave like this. Also the Talent's Mind Spike ability doesn't show up in this section, not sure if that was on purpose or not since it is mentioned in the notes of Mind Spike.

The damage and range modifiers seem to work fine though, so besides the name and strained notes I was able to make it work

Classic Sheet Update

Just a couple changes to the Hero classic sheet this time, but I think they are pretty useful!

  • The classic sheet now uses the MCDM Draw Steel Glyphs for icons and potency glyphs!
  • The 'Include Standard Abilities' (which displayed all standard abilities) option has been replaced with a multi-select where you can pick and choose only those standard abilities that you want included in your character sheet
  • Tables now render correctly in text descriptions
  • The options under 'Include Class Features' now have a tooltip that hopefully explains the differences between the options better than the one-word labels
  • Various small adjustments and bugfixes

Also, when running encounters in Forge Steel, when you end a turn you only have a choice for the opposing side. Shouldn't you be able to pick from either side since some abilities let one side go twice in a row? Seems like I mentioned it before and someone said they were looking at it. Is there another way to run encounters in forge steel? Thanks

How does this "save" data? My wife is directing (for the first time ever for any game!) running Delian Tomb, and wants to prep on her Mac, but run the game using a PC laptop at the table. Is that supported at the moment?

The data is saved in the browser local storage. For transferring between computers/etc, you'll want to use the data export -> import mechanism

It seems that the issue is still not quite resolved, along with some other display issues. I'm using Chrome and performed a refresh, a had refresh, closed the application and reopened it. I have not yet tried clearing the cache and reloading the character.

I am, however, receiving the following console error, which may or may not be related:

I think the Tactician 5pt maneuver Now! shouldn't have the Weapon keyword (and hence shouldn't get range distance bonuses from kits)

I've made a big change to Forge Steel, but you won't see this one unless you opt in. Some of the more complicated elements (classes, subclasses, monster groups, domains) are a little unwieldy to navigate, so I've simplified them. The only downside to this is that exporting a homebrew class, for example, as a PDF won't show all the information.

If you want to see this change, open About, switch to the Admin tab, and enter Glauer as a feature flag.

Hello! I noticed the core classes appear to update the heroic resource gain values as they get new features but I can't seem to replicate it for a homebrew class. Is this feature not rolled out for homebrew yet or am I doing something wrong? Examples of the hombrew class resources and the Tactician:

I'm working in Firefox and I've noticed that when I export the Classic sheet to PDF the Fletching and Jump skills are both dropped down slightly on the right hand side of the sheet (picture attached) - is this a known issue with Firefox or should I use a different browser for exporting (the issue doesn't exist in the web version of the sheet).

Is the only way to add a new Monster to create a whole new Monster Group (and/or copy it) into my sourcebook and then add from there? I'm trying to add a new Elemental but it looks like I would have to dupe the whole group before I add the new Monster. Am I missing a step?

I'm not sure, I don't have Chrome installed on the device at the moment, but it doesn't happen in Microsoft Edge. I am on the same instance of Firefox (144.0, 64-bit), and don't get this issue with other characters on a different device, so it may just be an odd quirk on this laptop!

I noticed that when I export a hero as data from mobile it's a .json file, and from my PC it's a .ds-hero file

Is there a way to turn off some races for instance, languages, add new ones, etc?

I mean, what if I wanted to, say, no Time Raiders in the game. I can definitely just say that, but if I could click things that turns some character choices off, that would be great if I could.

Another question, unrelated to the first, when running an encounter, I found that adding players was adding an entire folder of characters. Later on, I had a new player join; in order to get him in, I had to make a new folder just for him.

If I added him to the folder already added, would it auto add him? Because when I readded that folder, it added a second copy of all the characters, and that was awkward.

It would be great if we could just add characters individually as a second option to adding an entire folder, to encounters.

EDIT: third question, when running an encounter and starting a new turn, I had to click on each character to say they were ready for the next turn. I thought when I clicked the next turn button it would auto reset everyone, but it doesnt, as it listed no one to choose to go first for that next round until I manually reset everyone. Am I missing something? If not, it would be great if, when I clicked the next turn button, if all creatures that were FINISHED would be reset to READY to act.

  • You can select / unselect whichever sourcebooks you want to use for a hero on the first page of the hero builder.
  • You can add an individual hero to an encounter, or add a folder of heroes - it sounds like you're adding a folder.
  • When your encounter has monsters and heroes, you can use the initiative tracker to roll initiative, select the next combatant, and handle end-of-turn condition saves. You shouldn't need to manually adjust anything unless you want to do something unusual.

I'm trying to implement the Amulet of the Delian Order in Forge Steel but can't figure out how to include the saving throw bonus. Is this possible? If so, can someone walk me through it? Edit: to clarify what I'm looking for. I would like to show that +1 bonus in the note at the "Conditions" box, either as a "6 or higher on a 1d10+1" or "5 or higher on 1d10". Something like that.

And I see a spot where followers get added (under Manage/Customize) and when adding projects and I see a spot where they get assigned to a particular project. But the "Assigned Follower" space on the character sheet is always blank. Is there a way to fill in the assigned follower and have it show on the Classic Sheet view and export?

Classic Sheet Update

  • The 'Standard Abilities' page in the Heroes View has been converted to the classic sheet look, so you can now print a formatted handout of just the standard abilities for your table. Fits neatly on 2 pages! @exotic knot @strange rover

  • Projects that have been added to your Hero now also show up on a 'Projects Details' section, which outlines the project prerequisites and source, as well as providing a place to track whether you have obtained those things or not (and a place for details like just how much costmary leaves you have left for brewing those healing potions)

  • Also, as a heads up - I changed the rendering library for generating the pdf as well, and I have been seeing a lot less rendering weirdness. Hopefully the text positioning bugs those of you like @crystal tulip have been seeing are even more squashed now, but please keep letting me know if you run into any more of them!

regarding the other two comments, I didn’t see how you can add individual heroes, but I’ll look again. Yes I was adding in folders, but I didn’t see any other options, maybe I just missed it.

as for the encounter thing, when I’m talking about is when the first turn ends, so with each actor, you know when you have the first one going, you click when they’re finished, then you go to the next actor and click on their little menu and select acting or whatever the option is, sorry I’m not at my computer right now, so I’m operating on memory, and then you finish them etc. etc. when each one is finished, they’re at the bottom.

So when I’m going to the next turn, I thought when you clicked next turn, it would automatically set all the actors to being ready again, but it doesn’t, because it brings up the choice of selecting the first character to go, and it’s empty if I haven’t turned them from finished to ready to act.

And when you want to end the current group's turn, click the big End Turn button, rather than going through the menu for each of the groups. The initiative tool will pop up and you'll be prompted to choose the next actor.

im having an issue with importing hero sheets.

I asked my players to export their characters so I could import them for our campaign.

On my macOS, one of my player’s exports is findable by the import option from the application ending in the classic .ds-hero. This player exported via a macOS.

Two of the players can only export the data as a .json file and the import cannot find those files as legal targets for import. These players exported on AndroidOS.

I was wondering if there was a conversion or work around to get the files to be seen or in the proper file type. Or if I needed to just remake them on my end.

Hello! Im sorry if this is a silly question but I was making my charcater in Forge steel for the first time today, a Censor. When you choose a subclass in the books it gives you a predetermined skill eg. Paragon gets the lead skill, but in this builder it lets you choose any skill, is this intentional? Just checking so I know for future building! Thank you!

I wonder if the 'Details' pane aggregation of the skills might cause some confusion. I believe that when a class or something gives a specific skill, the skill still shows up as a selection on that screen - and it is possible to then select a different skill without realizing you're changing a skill that is 'supposed to be' static?

I think you just need to reframe your mental image of what a combat group is in Draw Steel tonegenuine tonepositive . For example, a "Scout Patrol" from the Wode Elf sample encounters consists of 14 creatures (23 EV). A "Hawkeye Cavalry" unit is only 6 creatures (48 EV). Don't forget Dynamic Terrain Objects as well.

No, that's showing the default damage because you tapped the blue lightning button. If you click that again you should see a Melee/Ranged toggle, which will show the correct bonuses when you have the correct setting applied (because the ability has both the Melee and Ranged keywords, and your kit bonus doesn't apply when you use it in melee).

Although actually it seems like the weapon is adding its bonus even in melee, which it should only be doing if the kit has a melee damage bonus. So yes, it is automatically adding it all the time, even when it shouldn't.

Yeah that's only adding your kit bonus (I assume). So you can see it's correctly 2 less in Melee, but it should also be -1 in melee because your kit doesn't have a melee damage bonus (unless it does in which case you're set)

Hmm. If you're in portrait mode (Settings > Classic Sheet), it seems that section is above treasures, but in landscape mode it's under treasures

Also check your settings for Settings > Heroes - Classic Sheet, what're the abilities set to?

@digital timber when I click on standard abilities view, power rolls such as knockback always come up as 2d10 + 0, even when might is say +2. If I go to settings Hero general, show standard abilities "none" the issue is present. The epic heroic resources seem to be implemented incorrectly, or at least it wasn't working RAW for the Tactician I was playing. Firstly, it was giving me Command per victories at the start of encounters, instead of after a respite.
Also, heroic abilities did not read as available even if I had enough Focus, they only would show as usable if I had that number in Command (i.e. a 5 Focus ability was greyed out until I had 5 Command)

@digital timber For the classic sheet, similar to the Heroic Ability thing I mentioned a while ago, effects like this (the maneuver granted by King's Roar, in this example) are not abilities in the game sense and wouldn't trigger anything that looks for them (like the Troubadour's "three abilities on one turn" drama effect, for example).

I'm not sure how to really fix this other than by having the item data include a note in the ability-granting section that says "This is not actually an ability" or whatever. But maybe there's a way to automate it that someone cleverer than me would know? 😅

hmm, that's an interesting point. How would you envision a 'non-ability' maneuver (in this example) being presented in the classic sheet? I would want to keep it mostly the same, in that it is grouped with other maneuvers, and generally maintains the same kind of look - but you are right that it would be good to have some sort of indication that it isn't really an 'ability' (updating the data to not name it 'Armor Ability' would be an obvious starting point)

I think removing "ability" is good (Armor Effect maybe?), but also laying it out with keywords and target and all that is what defines something as an ability (per page 69). Loving the encounter builder, question: I don't always want groups of 4 minions. I may want to split them up among groups. Instead of 4 and 4 I may want 3, 3 and 2. It seems I can only do groups of 4 in FS. I understand the EV portion, but is there any way to split them up? Thanks

I believe you can adjust how many minions are in a group on the right hand menu towards the top. It'll only let you choose one option for how many, so I don't think you could do groups of 2 and 3. Minions aren't really worth separating out below counts of 4, but YMMV.

that reminds me I need to make a feature request for being able to have different sized minion groups within a single encounter - for instance, one of the Delian Tomb encounters has an enemy group with 8 minions, as well as a group with 4 minions + a captain

yeah, I'm possibly confusing the difference between the backend data model and the display in the builder, but there isn't currently a way to have two separate minion squads in the same group that don't share a stamina pool. If you try to add a second squad of the same kind, it just doubles the count of the first squad

It doesn’t just download—I have to download then open from the download menu in the browser (otherwise it’s saved in some sort of limbo) and then when I save the file it’s always appended with .json, which I then have to remove for the file to be useful. I lost a bunch of characters.

Ok, I know I asked this somewhere, I thought it was here, but maybe it was reddit. So, if I asked this before, I'm very sorry, but I've been searching and I can't find my question from before.

When using Forge Steel to manage initiative in combat, after I get the first turn done, and I've had each actor Act, then setting them to Finished, when I want to start the next turn, when I click the next turn button it asks me who will go first.

Problem is, if everyone is in the "finished" column no one shows up. The only way I get them to show up is if I manually set each one as Ready to Act first, and I have to do each one individually. I would have assumed clicking the Next Turn button would have automatically set everyone to ready to act, but it doesn't do so. Am I missing something, or is this something that has to be done manually for now?

If the latter, I would suggest the feature request of allowing the clicking Next Turn to either automatically or give the choice to set all actors to Ready to Act.

When someone is acting it says End Turn. I thought that meant End ROUND, and I didnt want the round to end until everyone acted. So I didnt click the button, not wanting to mess things up. Now I get it. Its end the current creature's turn. I feel stupid now lol!

Data is stored in the browser's database; although it varies by browser and OS, generally clearing cookies or browser history doesn't remove this data. But it's always best to export your data from time to time and keep it as a backup - Safari, for example, clears the database if it's not used for a week or so.

  2. What level of completion do you expect for something to be on proper Forge Steel? If it's a class, is it all ten levels? Or could it be the first three levels as a preview? Yes, it’d be in a new Community sourcebook probably, and yes there’d be information about it on the front page.

A full 10-level class would be fine, but a smaller preview would also be fine - the system can handle classes that don’t have 10 levels - especially if you want to sell your content elsewhere. I think preview / playtest content like that would be in a separate sourcebook.

Even being able to do that with core Orden stuff would be useful for people who want to run in their own world, to use some but not all of the base draw steel stuff.

I found some inconsistency with the behavior around homebrew sourcebooks.
When you have no sourcebooks and you create a new homebrew item, it automatically creates a sourcebook named "unnamed sourcebook". Anything you create while you have this one sourcebook goes in there, even if you rename the sourcebook.
However, if you first create your own sourcebook, it will still create a new sourcebook when you create a new item. For further items you then will be able to choose which sourcebook you want your stuff in, because you have two sourcebooks.

tl;dr: If you create a sourcebook before creating the stuff that goes in it, and you have no other homebrew sourcebooks, the program doesn't realise you have a sourcebook and makes a new one.

With the encounter builder, it shows how difficult it is for 4 characters at a specific level. How do I change the expected # and level of the characters so I can see what difficulty it is expected to be?

For example, the example encounter, dragon attack, shows it as a hard encounter, almost extreme, for 4 characters of level 1. What if they were 5 at level 1, or 3 at level 2? I'd like to see that calculation, but can't see where to change it?

Is there an intended way to extract/export images that have been added to a character? The .ds-hero file has it embedded but I don't see a clear way to get that image for use in an external program. I was able to get it by right-clicking on the token icon on the character select screen and saying "open image in new tab", but that doesn't seem like an intentional way.

I'm planning to use DS to run a 3rd party 5e campaign and want to know if that function will be good enough that I can just pick the most flavorful monster choice and adjust level as needed to represent the creatures the party will face.

It holds up by what the official rules say, but the official rules are a liiittle misleading. Even disregarding that many monsters don't quite match the math provided, higher-level monsters have more generally debilitating design, effects, and capabilities

If you are downleveling stuff within an echelon, it should be okay, but going more than 2 or 3 levels or across echelons in general will cause the gap to skew

I like that we can print separately now a list of the standard actions outside our actual character sheet. The only thing that is missing that we used to have are the general cheat sheet entries for During the Move, Concealment, Critical Hit, Roll vs. Multiple Creatures, High Ground, Opportunity Attack, Move Actions, Flanking, Dying and Death, Shifting, Edges and Banes, Difficult Terrain, Invisible Creatures, Cover.

it's been mentioned a few times here and there in passing, but I'd like to bump it while I'm thinking of it: I have a homebrew class in a sourcebook and a Lv 3 hero made with that class. If I got into edit the class just to change some wording in a Text feature, and that's it. Save it. Go to my character. It does not recognize or implement the change until I deselect and reselect the class (and redo all my class decisions)

Abilities that are not from the characters class seem to not be saved correctly (Customize -> Class Ability). Whenever i reopen forge steel they are lost/unselected. The same thing happens on export and import.

If you look in the About screen, there are links for reporting bugs and requesting new features. That of course hasn’t stopped people using the custom content form for bugs and feature requests! But posting here is fine too.

I've been using the Forge Steel tool to build sample encounters, as it came highly recommended. However I've run into a problem in that the app starts to say my encounters are too strong, even if I still have EV to spend. I also ran the first fight in Road To Broadhurst through it and that too is described as too hard. I theorize that the Broadhurst encounter balances out because the enemies aren't interested in a straight fight. But it is certainly making me scratch my head. I know that each class of monster (horde, platoon etc) is supposed to be matched to a certain number of heroes. But if I do that, I have plenty of EV left.

I figured out the answer! When it told me the group was too strong the app wasn't talking about the encounter as a whole, just that particular enemy group on the initiative. I was trying to put a leader and a platoon brute and a platoon ambusher in the same initiative group!

If your map has a border around it, then it depends whether that border is a whole number of squares wide - if it is, then it’s just a case of counting the width and height of the map in squares, but if it isn’t, it’ll never line up.

It's natural to be frustrated when something like that happens. But please find a different way to express it. Forge Steel is an entirely free and public tool made by a volunteer for the same reason you're using it, you both like DS.
I'm not saying you can't make feature requests or say you wish it was done differently, but do it in a less judgy way.

I get that you are annoyed at finding this out only now, but it seems pretty clear there is no other way to do this unless you would have to sign in to forge steel and it would store stuff on a seperate server. The way to save your stuff has just been to download it and have it locally (or on the cloud service you use). Thanks Andy for making it easier to save everything at the end of a session though.

Hey friends, just an observation: since the 12.0 update. In dark mode at least, when on a character, the blue rings in the top right stay blue while the background goes blue when you hover your pointer over them. For me that just leaves the white numbers. If that's intended and I'm a moron, please disregard.

I can turn it off, so if that was the issue it appears to be fixed. I see it in the Blacksmith's Guild sourcebook.
Related question, would it be possible to have third party sourcebooks be turned off by default? Opt-in instead of opt-out. I love to see it, but if I tell a new player to "build a character, here's a tool", I would prefer not to have to tell them how to turn off 3rd party stuff to do that.

Today's deployment (12.12.0) appears to prevent a custom retainer from being added to a hero (it's no longer listed in select list when managing a hero; it was listed yesterday). 🙁

The current suggestion is in around 6-8 months time, depending on how well it sells. So if you were to commit a shoplifting crime (edit: and were immediately sentenced), you'd probably be out in time, but anything more serious than that, and you're likely to miss the summoner being added to Forge Steel.

I noticed that elementalist feature "Enchantment of Permanence" (p. 116 in Heroes book) gives +1 Stability per echelon in Forge Steel. The wording seems like it should just give a flat +1 Stabilty and only stamina bonus should stack with echelons. Is this a mistake or am I reading the feature wrong:

You gain a +6 bonus to Stamina, and this bonus increases by 6 at 4th,
7th, and 10th levels. Additionally, you gain a +1 bonus to stability.

We were digging through the customize tab and found lots of ways to add to various stats, but not that one. We found that we can customize each ability with additional damage (which is what we did), but it felt hacky.

my Hakaan elementalist has the Forceful trait:

Whenever you force move a creature or object, the forced movement distance gains a +1 bonus.

But it doesn't seem to add the forced movement distance bonus to my abilities, such as Vicious Fire (p. 117 of the Heroes book). Is there a way to modify the forced movement value in the ability on my character sheet? You can modify range, damage and cost, but I couldn't find the way to add +1 to forced movement distances.

HI friends, I'm making a character and selecting a kit. I haven't made a new character in a few weeks and just noticed that the layout for kits is different now. When I click on Kits to pick one it shows each kit with the three tabs, Overiew, Stats, and Features. When I click on stats it to read that part it just selects the whole kit and takes me out of the comparison and selection mode. Is there a way to go back to how it used to be where you could see it all laid out?

Big new feature, that's taken a huge amount of work, although only a few of you will see it - if you have a familiar, or a retainer, or a mount, or you can summon minions, you can now track their stamina and conditions on your hero sheet sidebar.

Running into some issues with homebrew versions of monsters in Forge Steel!
On trying to edit a monster, I receive this error:

can't access property "monsters", N is undefined
This in Firefox.

In addition tried exporting the monster, switching web browser, to Chrome and went on to import the monster. But, the import-button does nothing once the file is selected. Strange!

Hey Andy, I just had a great idea! I'd love if creators could make a file supporters can download and import that would put the content in FS so we can use the material but only the people that buy it get to use it. I just looked at a class in development for DS that I'd love to back. If I was a content creator I wouldn't just post my stuff to FS because I want people to buy it. But if I'm a customer, I'd love to be able to use the stuff I've bought in FS. I certainly don't have the skill to code it myself.

I found an issue w/ version 12.48.0. I cannot delete an old homebrew sourcebook. (The mouse pointer switches to the "not allowed" symbol.) The old sourcebook was created a while ago (~10 days, ~2 weeks ago, something like that).

In the included annotated screenshot, the bottom (old) sourcebook cannot be deleted (mouse pointer switches and delete button cannot be pressed); the top sourcebook (created today as a test) can be deleted--I can press the delete button, get the confirmation, & the delete/remove the sourcebook.

I annotated the screenshot with a green check and red 'not allowed' symbol.

you don't "install" Forge Steel anywhere. it's a browser app that (currently) leverages your the browser cache on any given device. as an analogy, if you download a Word file and edit it on your computer, your other devices won't see those edits. this is as opposed to Facebook or whatnot where you can login from multiple devices into the same environment. ForgeSteel is not that at the moment

I have a homebrew ancestry that has a feature that does the following

Whenever you finish a respite, or earn a victory, choose between having immunity to Cold and Acid damage equal to your highest characteristic score, or immunity to lightning damage equal to your highest characteristic score.

I'm assuming there is no way to put this into Forged steel at this time, is that correct or is there some off the beaten path utility that can make this happen

How can I print retainer card/sheet? There is switch on monster group for "classic" view but it's not really print-friendly, and it looks like it tries to list all retainers (but is cut short mid-second)
I just want to print 1 retainer sheet (ideally at selected level) as a handout for my players. I don't want to add it to hero, because I want to give it to them when they earn it during adventure.
Is there any way to do that? (or plan?)

Another question, I'm playing with Negotiation Builder and it seems like there is no way to adjust starting Interest/Patience other than through Attitude. Some negotiations in DT are custom (or starting I/P depend on previous actions) and such flexibility would be useful 🙏

  • Motivations/Pitfalls description styling is off (placeholder appears as if it was content, "block type" in rich text controls is not prefilled)

I think something like that would require a keyword or combination of keywords? since I'm pretty sure that's what the bonus system looks at (for that kind of more targeted adjustment)

@vast fiber to answer your question, you want to hit the Manage button right above the Heroes stamina, then go to the Customize tab, hit the "+" icon and find Titles under Game Content, which will add a title to the space below the header, after which you can select it and select a title through it
