One of my players has found a bug with the politician background. There seems to be a visual difference between the proper character sheet showing the wealth and the sidebar/manual entry bit, so sheet is displaying wealth -1 while the sidebar shows wealth. Does that make any sense?

I have a level 5 game so made a custom class with the extra levels (super intuitive to do!), but when i tried to add my characteristic increases it still has them at 2, is there something I could have missed or is that soft locked at the moment?
I haven't had a chance to use forge steel in a while, and I am totally lost when building an encounter, I can't seem to figure out how to add monsters
You have to Edit the encounter, then go to the Monsters tab

No that should work - make sure the players are using the right version of the class (deselect and reselect) if they started their hero with a previous version

Looks like the Goblin Monarch has missing text on their "Kill!" Villain action in the Effect area.
Also just realized that when editing a Negotiation in the Negotiation Builder, the "Description" section has a drag function at the bottom right but it doesn't actually do anything. Might be useful to allow that to at least drag down some.

Yeah, on the Details page of the Hero info you can add a name to the Folder line and it'll group them all on their own tab.

Only levels 1-3 are covered by the license - that may change when the game is released but I’m not assuming so.
I do think both Matt and James mentioned that the whole game would be covered by the (updated for that purpose once they get there) licence once it is out in it's final form,

Looking like Tactician's kit damage bonuses aren't correctly adding to Heroic Abilities. For example, Shield Bash here is correctly adding 2 for Might and 2 for the kit bonus, but Heroics are only adding 2 for the Might and not the kit damage.

I ran a game yesterday evening where they gave an offering at a shrine and received an additional recovery as a blessing.
How do you add a recovery in Forge Steel without having to click the respite button and backtrack the HP and victories?
Because that ability can be used as Melee or Ranged, it isn't automatically adding the bonus melee damage. Instead, it's helpfully telling you that there's a situational bonus that might be applicable.
You can add a 'Stat Bonus' customization that adds a recovery.

One of my players have noticed that the wording of Judgement still calls the heroic resource "Judgement" instead of "Wrath"
That's the case in the current rules too, it's just a little editing error
Make sure your players have deselected / reselected Censor - that wording was changed a few weeks ago.

Hey, Ive noticed that the "My life for yours" ability on the censor only grants 10 stamina to the ally when activated but shouldn't that still be a recovery value? The pregen censor in the delian tomb still has the recovery value included in the ability description. If I've missed an update somewhere I apologize in advance.
It should be the Censors recovery value that the other character then heals.
Found another very minor typo. Thorn Dragon, one of it's inate abilities is currently written "Withering Wyrmsacle Aura". Pretty sure that should be Wyrmscale, but maybe a Wyrmsacle is a new thing I'm just not aware of.

I'll bring it up again because I think it'll be useful once the full game comes out; When a change is made to correct an error in text or to an ability, having to deselect and reselect the class can be a bit of a pain. Being able to pull an update to characters would be immensely helpful.
Not a QoL so much as a totally new feature: would be cool if Draw Steel had a Tutorial Mode where each section of Lv 1 of a character sheet was highlighted and succinctly explained as if it were your first time playing
And maybe a script for Directors to follow along with the Tutorial Mode

Is there a way to manually adjust the amount of recoveries I currently have without resting/using one? ran into it a lot playing as a Censor today where I was healing others not me so kept having to spend a recovery then take damage to adjust my stamina
I did see it was discussed a little above, but I don't mean adding an overall recovery, just being able to manually adjust the number of recoveries, without using the "spend recovery" , or is it still just through customizing is the only way to do that during play?

A QoL suggestion, when selecting skills from Career/Culture, it would be cool if we are able to search them using the text box as we can do in Class.
Few things:
First, with a Tactician that has a +2/+2/+2 kit (Dual Wielder), and a +0/+0/+4 kit (Mountain), it's combining the two bonuses to +2/+2/+4. Stamina, Speed, Disengage, and Stability all seem to be correct. I suspect there'll need to be an option to pick which bonus from their Kit they get for their abilities.
Second, this has to do with the export to PDF option. It's putting Items into the Features area instead of the Inventory area on the PDF, even with the toggle set to "Separate inventory features" turned on.
Third, also about export to PDF option. Resource Gain: it tells the triggers that get extra resources, but does not include the default gain at the start of each turn.
The PDF stuff are easy enough manual fixes for now, but it'd be nice for those to be included automatically.
Actually just found that the PDF size is 11.7" x 8.3" which is A4 paper. I suspect most people in the US have Letter size (8.5" x 11") as it's more standard here.

You get one or the other DMG bonus for Melee, not a combo of the two. The example is showing you how to reduce whichever bonus you're not taking from one Kits signature and then apply the other. Forge Steel is showing both combined.
Double Strike, Pain for Pain, and Inspiring Strike all show "Bonus melee damage +2/+2/+4" at the bottom of them.

the abilities don't add the damage bonuses to the power roll tables anyway, you're expected to do that yourself. Might as well just put both Bonus Melee Damage sets in the thing at the bottom

With regards to the filter, I think it's a little odd that you have to uncheck everything to get at the filter you actually want.
Imo a filter being active should mean "only show this and other checked filters" rather than "may show this", and the filters should all start off disabled. This is kind of the standard in UX as far as I know.

Not opened Forge Steel on my phone for a while but it appears to be acting in a desktop manner with seemingly no way to scroll across or resize. I'm sure it used to fit automatically to mobile.

That item has a conditional bonus so it's not automatically added. Instead you'll see it as a feature in the hero sheet.

Having some trouble with PDF exports. Tried on Firefox and Chrome on two computers and couldn't get a download. Data and image seem to work fine.
Ah, seems to be because of custom content (in this case an ancestry) being included. Tried with a new random hero and it worked fine.

It's because one ability doesn't have a distance. I'll fix the PDF output so that won't matter.

Oh, you know what, I did save it and then neglected to unselect and reselect ancestry in the builder. So close to figuring it out haha
So Forge Steel has that awesome encounter calculator and planner but it forces the minions to be made in batches of 8 but for the new Delian Tomb playtest there's lots of situations where the initiative groups are 1 captain + 4 minions. Trying to subtract from the 8 here deletes all of them. It only goes in batches of 8. Am I missing something here?
Yeah. 4 minion rules changes aren't licensed yet if I'm not mistaken

If you’re using it to run games, you can keep it at 8 for building the encounter to use the EV values (since 8 minions for 6 EV is the same as 4 minions at 3 EV twice)
And then change the minion count before running the encounter, and put 4 in one group and 4 in another
The EV will look wrong now, but it’ll work out the same

Yes - but don’t share the link, share the window (ie in Discord or on a second screen or TV)

Forge Steel is local browser only as far as I can tell. Cache/cookies store the info, and can only be transferred to other systems/browsers by using the Export/Import feature. No live linking between different users/browsers/computers.

The final page of the edit screens lets you add custom stuff, it might have what you want
Usually it's used for titles, but it can be used for abilities and "retainers" too

Looks like you can't currently add Ancestry Features from other ancestries the way you can do for class abilities. For the Familiar, I don't see it in Companions or Retainers, so you could add it as a custom/homebrew Monster first in the Library section, then add your new material to the character.
I ended up just editing the pdf that I can export, and adding that way

The familiar stat block is now part of the Familiar perk - cos it's not really a proper creature with standard stats.
To add an ancestry feature, go to Customize, and the Ancestry Feature option now allows you to specify an ancestry (it defaults to 'your ancestry').

Is there a way to add immunities to a character? I have an armor imbued with the Damage Immunity I imbuement, and I would like to see the immunities it gives me. I was ready to add them by hand but couldn't find a way

You can add it as a note from the Manage menu, a custom condition to have it near your Stamina, or make a custom item that does it and add that

One thing I noticed is that when I export my character sheet as a pdf (portrait) the features box allows for scrolling which isn't printer friendly. The landscape version doesn't do that, so i'm happy to use that as a workaround
It's just a on-screen rendering thing, when you do the print preview it should all fit properly

My players got the Local Hero title and chose the Local Fame feature, but it doesn't seem to add Renown to their sheet
One of my player is a College of Ash shadow, and it seems the Burning Ash feature doesn't appear on their sheet

Yep - make sure you're running the latest version of the app (9.83 I think). Deselect and reselect Shadow if necessary.

OK, I think I've got that working now - if you open a hero you can now select either 'Hero Sheet' or 'Standard Abilities' on the Export menu. It'll export to PDF or image. Let me know what you think.

Hahaha wow, I missed the most important part of that sentence. The list of each individual minion. So instead of listing out war dog commando 1, war dog commando 2, etc, it would just have war dogs (x8), and then list their pooled stamina.
It would just reduce scrolling when running an encounter. Not a huge issue if not possible though

Hello all. I've recently used Forge Steel to prep and run a session in person as Director. Overall I'm very happy with the experience, so I'll start by thanking you, Andy, for the great tool you've developed so far. 👍
There are a couple of things I didn't find as intuitive, so in the hope of getting an even better tool, I'm providing some feedback below. (I'm using Firefox in dark mode.)

Maybe it's possible but I've not seen how: group Encounters/Montages/etc to make them part of an Adventure or a Session (multiple Sessions in an Adventure). And then being able to export it all as one bigger package. I prepped the session on my PC, but ran it from my laptop. I exported/imported all the parts individually; it would have been easier to be able to export the session in one go.

When constructing an Encounter: when adding Monsters:
a. I basically always wanted the "Filter" part to be open so I could search. I understand why you might not want to have it opened initially, because it takes up quite a bit of space. Maybe it could be an idea to have a simple text box "search" be always visible and an "advanced filter" to be optional. (Similar "search" to adding a monster in the "Session" screen maybe?)
b. I found the list of monsters to be a bit bulky, taking up quite a bit of screen space. I think the information could be presented in a more table like structure, improving the UX.
c. Similar for the monsters already part of the encounter. Preferably I'd have all my initiative groups on one screen. (and I tend to zoom out to 80%) -
When running an Encounter, I actually didn't do that from the "Session" screen, but from the "Encounter" (prep) screen. The main reasons for this:
a. I'm most interested in the stat blocks of the monsters. Seeing them on one page for all the monsters in the encounter was very nice. In the "Session" screen I just now found where I can find the monster stat block, but it takes quite a few clicks to get there, to find an ability to "Roll".
b. The "Acting now" / "Ready to Act" the subtables have a white background, while the rest of the tool is dark. The contrast is less than ideal (maybe a 'bug' in the configuration of the subtable only having a color for light mode?)
So I used the Encounter screen scrolled to the statblocks of the monsters (1 click to get to an ability to Roll) and I tracked the health of monsters on a piece of paper. -
Just noticed: under "Tactical Maps" (which I haven't used yet), when trying to upload a file, I noticed the file dialog didn't recognize .jpg files. There seems to be an issue where it lists ".gif.jpg" as one entry.
Highly agree with your 3 and a. under it. It burned a lot of time flipping back and forth between pages to track info for the monsters and have easy access to the abilities.

I think I found an interesting bug. When editing a homebrew ancestry and I delete an ancestry trait, all the other ancestry traits below it on the list are also deleted. As a workaround, I put the trait at the end and then it only deletes the one.

It seems that the Disciple of Fire feature of the level 2 Fire Elementalist doesn't had the fire immunity to the character
Your connection to fire allows you to protect yourself from it, even as you rip away the protections of others. You have fire immunity equal to 5 plus your level in this class. Any fire damage you deal ignores a target’s fire immunity.
Looks like it's set as a text feature and not an immunity
The Green Elementalist triggered action The Breath Of Dawn Remembers says its trigger is "The target starts their turn", but it's "The target starts their turn or takes damage" in the book:

IMO there's every reason to expect the rest of the game will be covered in the next license whenever that comes. They want the game to be open. But the future is, ultimately, unknowable
The Devs have implied/stated intention that the license will open up, but it might not be immediately after release, and then data entry gonna take a while
i just made a censor (basically the default one minus a few changes) and most everything int he sheet on the hero tab is blank

I see there are companions and retainers in the "other" section of the hero editior. But I'm not sure how to make a custom follower, or if I'm barking up the right tree there.

You can add companions / mounts / retainers by editing a hero and going to the 'Customize' section.
If you want to create a custom follower, you'd do that in the Library, as a monster
To track projects, open your hero and click on the Manage button - there's a Projects tab.

There’s like 10 heroes in there now, so when check their collected languages and skills (great feature btw), i have to scroll over and then lose the first column with the labels.

Likely. I'm assuming Retiarius, the polearm one based on the melee distance and damage bonus. The damage bonus would only apply when using the melee distance, so I believe that's why it stays separated

If they were and you decided to use the ability at range, you would have to find the melee damage bonus and subtract it from the ability damage, which would be more cumbersome than adding the right bonus depending on the situation

When I use Google Sheets (for high level characters), I simply copy paste the ability twice, and add "(melee)" to one and "(ranged)" to the other, applying the right bonuses to each. To me it would be less confusing to have two cards, rather than one card with a small button to switch from one to the other
Is there any way to add options for environment/organization/upbringing within cultures? Like adding homebrew organizations, for example, that the bespoke culture character option could draw from. Adding homebrew cultures still restricts you to the existing lists.

Based on the consensus of [this rules question](#ds_rules-questions message), kits that give increased distance should affect the "within" part of area abilities like Thunder Roar if they have the Melee/Ranged and Weapon keywords. Chance this gets changed by final release but it looks the same in more recent material
Hello, I'm loving Forge Steel! Very impressed by it, and it's been an invaluable tool in getting my friends into the game.
In the interest in improving it a bit, I've included a couple more examples of kit damage seemingly not being added correctly. Below are the free strikes for a couple of tacticians. Curiously, the Cloak and Dagger bonuses are being added correctly - but only for melee.
I believe the correct damage for the melee free strike should be 8/11/13, and the ranged damage should be 7/9/11.
Here are the hero datas. Please let me know if you need any more info, or if I got rules/math wrong.
So, kits are a little complicated - they don't stack, instead you get the best for each stat. So if you have two kits that both grant melee damage bonuses, you don't get both, you get the best one.
So if for example you have +2/+2/+2 and +0/+0/+4, you have to decide which kit you're using when you use the ability. Forge Steel won't automatically apply the bonus because it doesn't know which one you're using.
In the first case, it's confusing because both your kits give the same melee bonuses, but Forge Steel isn't yet clever enough to realise that.
In the second case, one of those kits is strictly better than the other, but again, Forge Steel doesn't have the logic to work that out yet.
But it's on my list!

Hmm, might be useful for tacticians to have a menu where they can select which kit bonus is active.
It might have a secondary use in addressing abilities than can be used with either ranged or melee bonuses.

There isn't a new license yet, so only the most recent backer packet is included iirc
The license is limited to the last backer packet which is only levels 1–3. It's expected (I think an intent was stated but nothing was 100% confirmed so don't quote me) that the license will expand to the full game when it's out next month (ish). Then there will need to be a lot of data entry for FS (which I and some other folks have volunteered to help with), so it won't be immediate, but it'll get there

This is a question no one can answer right now because it hasn't been decided/stated yet, but that's the understanding I have, yes.

Making a character isn't the whole game? I don't understand the question.
I mean, even then, like, the rest of the rules are also valid for reuse under the license, hence things like Steel Compendium. You can read the whole game without buying it, but the map is not the territory.
For another example, look at Paizo. 100% of Paizo's rules and mechanics for Pathfinder 2e (though not their adventure modules) are free on Archives of Nethys, and there are many great web and digital resources for the game. Paizo still makes money because people like having PDFs and physical books, they like having the rules laid out as the designers intended with proper art attached, and they like supporting a company that makes stuff they like.
MCDM's license (currently) goes even a step farther than that in that they allow their product identity (all the names of their setting-specific stuff) to be used under the Creator License, which Paizo doesn't. But the game is already funded, that's what the Backerkit campaign (and partially Patreon) are for.
In fact, I mean, most big TTRPGs out there have ways of making a character without buying the game. You could start playing D&D 3.5 and 5e without buying the books as well. It's a good way to hook people in and build a community
Well I’m not complaining, the license is very generous for sure.
I’m a patron so I’ve been supporting MCDM for some time. But I’ve been in groups in college where people just shared pdf they downloaded for books. Having a character builder with for all the classes and ancestries lowers the barrier for that sort of activity.
I think dndbeyond only allows a very small % of classes for free in their builder. But WotC has always been predatory with that stuff.
Glad to hear that they are the exception and other ttrpg devs have a more open license. Just hope it doesn’t affect their bottom line!

People seemed to like the previous update for triggers, so to expand on that, Forge Steel now shows your heroic resource gain conditions in the sidebar too.
Did the “start encounter” button (transfers victories into heroic resources) get moved? None of us could find it at the table today.

Is there a way to save your stuff to an account? I’ve had a few times my characters not saved on the site. Is this just a limitation with the app?
I've never heard of heroes not being saved, but they are saved to that browser on that machine - if you use a different machine, or a different browser, your stuff won't be there.
Best thing to do is export as data and throw it in online storage of your choice. I have all my players uploading to a google drive folder regularly.
(BTW, is there anyway to import a folder of heroes?)
Hi! New to DS, and FS seems like it will be invaluable for me to poke around the system and as a resource for my players as well. Fiddling around with the pre-gen goblin encounter, I noticed that there are "terrain" features and was wondering if there is a way to add terrain to the map as a "mini". I really like how with the mini's you can click on them and their stat block pops up. If not, I assume overlay's can be used for this purpose.

Hey! Currently having some troubles with homebrew kits applying bonuses inconsistently. The damage bonuses are being applied to abilities with the melee and ranged keywords even if the ability doesn't have the weapon keyword. I'm also noticing that the Martial Artist kit isn't applying its own bonus to itself the same way that Mountain is on my end.
I also just had an issue where when I was trying to select a skill for a feature it would get stuck on the first five or six skills and no amount of scrolling even with the bar moving would get it to let me select anything else. (Typing didn't work either.)
Edit: After swapping the Martial Artist and Mountain kit back and forth several times and reloading a lot eventually it went to normal. Absolutely not a clue what was happening there

Hello. I am trying to import some custom monsters. I create a homebrew version of elementals, import the monsters I want, and save changes. When I save changes, it just takes me to a blank screen.
If I reload forge steel, and try the for directors option, I'm also taken to a blank white screen. But if I choose the heroes option, I can go to monsters and see my homebrew elemental monsters group.
Any idea whats going on with these blank screens?
I should say I'm using edge

Will do when I have access to my computer again, but it’s not happening just on heroes. The place I’m noticing it happening is when I’m adding to a homebrew sourcebook that already has some new skills in it.
I’m using Firefox. Also weirdly when I was first adding things to that sourcebook for two days it worked perfectly normally. It only started acting up later on

Oh I misspoke earlier it’s not happening on heroes at all, it’s only happening when when creating homebrew (e.g., giving something a skill or choose a skill feature) but will do. I have a suspicion I’ll test when I can as well

If by class choices, you mean literally just the choices in the class section, no, you'll have to copy the class as homebrew and add the higher level features in the editor, then select that class on the hero and level up

Another one for you: I have my retainer at level 2, and it did get the +1 stat, but not the +10 stamina. Also, the bonus to signature ability is displayed but not taken into account in the signature ability, but I guess this might be difficult
The bonus to signature damage is displayed precisely because it's not factored in, yeah (yet). I'll check out the missing stamina.

I feel like this layout could probably be organized in such a way that it's easier to find the trait you are looking for.
As is, I find myself just glossing over all of the titles until I find the one I want. Perhaps if each category head a different color, or structure, or was placed in a different location, and each trait had some kind of icon, it would be easier to find what you are looking for.
Hey Andy. Since you incorporated many of the things I requested the last time I provided feedback, I felt encouraged to note some more things that I experienced when preparing for and running a session (in real life) last weekend. I use Firefox on Windows 11 (prep on PC on 1440p with 100% zoom, run on a laptop on 1080p on 80% zoom).
If my feedback reads as very direct, I shall bring up the excuse that I am Dutch and this is therefore in my nature 😉
Please note that I think Forge Steel has great potential!

Since I prep on my PC and run on my laptop, it would be really convenient if would be possible to group Encounters/Montages/Negotiations under an adventure, and then be able to export/import the adventure in one go. The first part of the functionality would also be really useful when running multiple campaigns in parallel. Then the Encounters/Montages/Negotiations don't clutter up (without having to prefix all of them).

In the Encounter Builder on the monsters table, I think the elements on the left hand side with the groups and monsters are a bit oversized and as a result I have to scroll back and forth quite a bit. Suggestions to make it a bit more compact: I think "Level X Organization Role" could be on the same line as the tags. The EV number could go next to the 'details i'. Buttons "Move To" "Copy To" could be icons and be next to each other.
- When running the encounter, instead of using the "Session" page, I (still) used the Encounter page. Together with pencil and paper to note monster stamina. It is so incredibly valuable to have all the stat blocks open at the same time next to each other. On the Session screen ~67% of the horizontal space is blank and it takes 2 clicks to get to a stat block. Yes, when a monster is active, the stat-block shows on the right hand size, but this does not help when the monsters are being targeted by an AoE that applies a condition, needing to compare the monster attribute to the potency. And when there are multiple different monsters in a group, it takes a lot of scrolling to find the right stat-block. Suggestions for layout (I've taken the liberty to make a mockup in the attached screenshot):
a. next to the health of a monster (or minion group), before the conditions, in something of a table with columns, show a mini version of the statblock with Speed/Size/Stamina/Stab/Free Strike and MARIP. This way, when multiple monsters are targeted by like a "P < 2 slowed", I can quickly see that, instead of having to open separate statblocks.
b. have separate buttons to go to "Encounter" side-bar (when clicking the health / name of the monster, for example) and to go to the "Stat Block" side-bar (when clicking the mini-statblock from item a above).
c. next to the new mini-statblocks, have some buttons like "Signature", "Maneuver", "Trigger" that jump directly to the ability side-bar (with the button to roll the damage).
d. The buttons "Ready To Act" / "Acting Now" / "Finished" would be used frequently and don't need to be under the "..."-menu. When a group is "ready to act", have just one button to move it to "active". Then when "active", one button to "finish". Then when moving to the next round move all "finished" Groups to "ready to act" (could be a separate button "next round").
- (Minor) I searched for "monarch" looking to find the goblin monarch and the result set was empty. Took me a while to figure out that the "Filter on EV" was switched on (by default? at least I don't remember having switched it on). Maybe it could be off by default.

Yes - create your encounter, then add it to a plot point's content; it should disappear from the encounters list and be available to view / edit / run from the adventure. Same with montages / negotiations.
Newest update allows you to add artisan / sage followers to your heroes.
Ok so I've made a Test Adventure with a Test Plot Point. I've made a new Test Encounter. How do I link it to the Plot Point? I don't see any option for that in the Plot Point or Encounter.

I'd like to be able to add accounts, and it's on the list, but the advantage of the current system is that I don't have to pay for a server with a database.
this is a ridiculously high-effort request, but I feel like I've gotta mention it: I'd love if we could crowdsource some token options for each monster
For some hobby projects I've used Google Firebase, for authentication and the Firestore database. It's free for a significant amount of data and then pay-as-you-use. You could offer the cloud storage behind a paywall, then it 'pays for itself'.
I have not found firebase to be reliable. And Forge Steel will never, ever be paywalled! 🙂
I've been lightly poking at the Google Drive API recently; it could be a viable solution to provide as an opt-in feature to Forge Steel for saving there instead of browser data. Its not "full" account ecosystem, though it would cover the multiple device use cases

I might be missing something or I might not understand how to "equip" the weapon then maybe. I randomly generated a Troubadour with the Mountain kit and added an Icemaker Maul to their inventory. At level 1 I would expect my abilities with the melee tag to deal an additional point of damage as cold damage. Is there something I need to do to make that apply?
If it's shown in the Features tab, it's not auto-calculated - the set of things that aren't auto-calculated is constantly shrinking
I've been messing around with recreating the summoner playtest for a game and I can't seem to figure out the best implementation for 'signature minions'
Essentially - what's the best way to add a choice between different a custom set retainers/ companions in the game? I think 'tagged feature' type is the where the answer is but I ain't sure

Niche requests can often be accommodated using the Customize tab - in this case you can add a Stamina modifier

I searched for some how to videos on Youtube. I'd be keenly interested to see how the Director related functions are intended to be used etc.
Just like a sample for this is for this, and that is for that kinda thing.
But I am in LOVE with this tool. It is amazing. Works even pretty well from my phone, though I have to deal with my fat fingers and unwanted keyboard overlay coming up all the time.
Honestly, it makes making the characters so much easier than reading through the options from the available PDF Heroes manual.
I'm planning to run my first DS game this Saturday via Roll20, which took plenty of figuring on how to make that work, and Forge Steel as the key character tool will be key to my plan.

A quick update (that required a surprising amount of work behind the scenes) - you can now add 'Summon' features to your homebrew to allow your heroes to summon creatures.
Not sure if there's anything upcoming that would require that sort of thing, but you never know.

On Roll20, I don't think we could have managed it without Forgesteel! ♥️♥️♥️
We took about 2.5 hours to get through 1 floor which was disappointing, but we learned and hopefully it will be better next time!
This would likely take some work, but I think the tool could really benefit from some kind of unified "one-page" view of the character's combat abilities.
One view that includes all actions, maneuvers, triggers, etc.
(Instead of having to flip between the different tabs during combat)

The thing with that option is that you still need to scroll a lot. In other words you can't see it all at once.
Part of the idea I'm thinking of is that each option has a minimized view, that only expands (or maybe is shown in a sidebar) if you click on it.

Imbued weapons seems to add their damage properly, but I have a character with an Abjurer's Bastion (a leveled implement) and it doesn't add its damage bonus to magic or psionic abilities. Is that normal?

I like me a great spreadsheet, and the example above is nice enough, it's not for everyone and actually seems a bit cramped.
MrMattDollar did a google sheets sheet one if that's your jam, but it's no where near as automated as Forge Steel.

as a director having to scroll scroll scroll up and down a stat block which would otherwise fit in a single window is unwieldy, and is unhelpful at best when you're working with a few different types of monsters, it's far better to have all the things the monsters can do in one compact space than having to do continual menu-ing. It also slows down the pace of combat. as it is Forge Steel is unusable to me as a Director that runs combats, and has to reference stat blocks it has a similar problem way to much open-close-open-close-scroll-scroll-open-close
I would actually pay someone to make a fork of Forge Steel with tighter presentation, this horse needs a course

There is another digital tool called stawl. Maybe that has what you need
I wouldn't fork Forge Steel because then that fork would lose out on future updates. But I might consider making a tool that accepts exported Forge Steel character data and displays it in a condensed manner.

Probably not the highest priority item, and certainly not the easiest to implement afaik, but it would be cool if Forge Steel allowed us to implement/import a Design file that it used to display our character on the site (while still retaining the Manage features, etc?) so we could design our own character info displays but use them in the same app somehow. I wish FS had a way to display a character picture, but I would imagine such a feature would be problematic due to the space requirements to start storing people's pictures. What about a link to a picture online?

So here's what I've added - when you're editing your hero you can upload a picture for them and it'll be displayed on the hero sheet alongside their name. The picture will also be visible when selecting your hero, and it'll appear in the encounter manager too (and on the hero's mini in maps if you're using one).

Something weird, I have the exported character sheet from all my players. One of them I just noticed had some inflated attribute characteristics (too many 2's and 1's).
Just a level 1 character, I'm not even sure how this could be, as I don't see an option to manipulate the scores within FS. I did notepad the .ds-hero file and find that yeah you could hack in the values - the file did show the weird values in it.
I don't think this person would have manually edited the file like that but I'm not sure how else it could have been messed up like this.
He said that he was jumping around between tabs before deciding on a character, going back and changing classes etc so it might be something slightly buggy.

The license currently allows only use of the backer packet 2 text, which only goes up to level 3. It is presumed that this will be updated for the full game but there is no strict timeline on that. If/when it does, it will then take a good amount of time, even with volunteer help, to add everything in

Does this go beyond level 3? I tried adding XP to go to level 4 and it prompts me to level up, but there's nothing in the class page to add after level 3.

Because it uses the Draw Steel License, it's limited to the last backer packet release. Which only goes up to level 3
I'd expect it to get a big content push, and start going up to lv10, once the game releases with the license (though may take time to implement it all, I'm not sure how development is handling it)

Just wanted to drop in and say that the Party Overview section is such a wonderful QoL option to have; if there's anyway to export it to a CSV or similar, or even just extend the tab for broader viewing so I can see full tables at once that'd be amazing (but I understand it's an aesthetic thing so not high priority!)

@urban hollow Question for you: under Recoveries, there is a "Spend a Recovery - Don't regain Stamina" button.
Can this only appear for classes/heroes who have abilities that work like this, like the Conduit? I've got a Fury player who has made this mistake multiple times and cursed the site wondering why she's even able to click it. (Unless there are other reasons one might spend a Recovery without gaining Stamina?)

I just want to say, I really like this tool. It's amazing how all-encompassing it is.
I'm prepping for my intro session with my players and planning to have them use the app. I know not every class has a "subclass" but is there somewhere that says which one it is?
For example, the pregen human censor is an exorcist, but the only place I can find that is on the abilities.
Every class does have a subclass! Are you talking about specifically the pregens, or characters in the app in general?

I'm talking about the app in general. For example, here's the hero screen for the pregen human censor. It lists career, class, ancestry, and doman but not subclass which should be exorcist.
It does however list exorcist as the source of one of the features on the next page.

Actually, clicking on the class just shows the different options. Is there a place that shows which one is selected for this hero? You can tell based on what's in here but for a new player I'm not sure it'll be apparent.

I'm thinking of seeing if I can get a quick solution put together to help with crowdsourcing updating the content when the book releases (asuming the license permits doing so). The idea is that the tool would allow one to convert an exported file to the TypeScript data format so folks could use Forge Steel directly for updating. Andy, can you think of any gotchas to look out for with the process of copying a class and using the export of the copy as a baseline?
The main issue is that the data inside FS isn’t in JSON, it’s in code.

For anyone who was interested in supporting the conversion effort, though concerned about needing to know TypeScript to do so, I added a link to a tool in the data entry thread that will allow you to use Forge Steel itself for creating Hero Classes. It won't likely get 100% of the way there, but should provide a solid baseline to hand off to someone with the TypeScript chops to carry over the finish line.

I might be wrong here, but I don't think forge steel has any way to broadcast maps and tokens. Are you using a VTT? Or like, projecting forge steel onto a TV for in-person play?
Just playing around at the moment, Using the Player View button to open a second browser window with a random map. I believe I would ‘share screen’ in discord or on a tv to show that.
However if I make any changes to it, it stops sharing to the other window.

I will say, though, keep an eye out for any bugs in the features/abilities. I went over the censor several times when I was updating it, but there very well may be some issues there
When I have a Package as a Section of the Content of an Ability, Package Content works perfectly. In fact, I have custom kits that grant package content for a package in the class. Works great. But when I have a feature that is just a package (as opposed to an ability that has content including a package as a section), it doesn't seem to want to bring in the package content, even from a subclass.

This seems to be a bug with the Censor. I do have a domain selected, but I'm guessing that beneath the hood, it's being handled differently than in the Conduit, since it's not a "subclass" here, and that is leading to the bug.

Is there any way to reduce a level? I added victories and did a respite to see what it did before I checked to make sure I could later on undo that. I'll have to redo the selections later anyway (to get to release version), so if there is no way it's not a problem for me. But I thought I'd ask while it's on my mind.

For you to see updated info you have to fully unselect and reselect that thing. I find it easier to just rebuild a character from scratch than to do that with every individual option.

Did you refresh your browser? In the past I've forgotten to do so and left a tab open for a long time.
You can now create custom homebrew subclasses, which will show up when you're selecting a subclass for your heroes. It'll also let you pick a subclass from a different class, if you wanted to do that for some weird reason.
To clarify, you could always create homebrew subclasses as part of a homebrew class, but now you can create them individually.
I recently ran my first encounter using Forge Steel and it was a huge help!
But one feature I missed was a button I could press that would calculate the malice gained at encounter/round start for me. Is that a thing, and if so where can I find it?
That should be automatically handled when using the Session view and using that view for tracking turns
Okay, i see why I missed it: My brain passed right over the button saying "to start add your heroes", because it was greyed out. And it was my impression that I had already added heroes when I made the encounter, to calculate the budget.
Even when looking at it a minute ago in a completely stress-free situation, I didn't see it 😅

I see that there's a great item and title reference, is there a way that I'm missing to attach them to a character? to "grant" them a title or "equip" an item and have the stats adjust accordingly? Or is that still coming? (Phenomenal effort so far by the way, love having this tool)

Oh I see there are tags, you could still filter by. Still IMO it was better before.
New topic - The Kit bonus to "Distance Bonus" I think needs to be adjusted / fixed. Presently if the Tags of "Melee" and "Weapon" (and presumably "Ranged" and "Weapon"?) if there is an AREA keyword as well, that ask in the case of the Fury's "Back!" power, which has a Burst 1 area of effect, and the AREA keyword, the power on the character sheet changes to Burst 2. I believe this is an error. If the AREA keyword shows up, then I think the "Distance Bonus" should not apply to the power.
I think that should be updated now.
There are some small nuances, like it does apply to the distance of something like Thunder Roar — it doesn't increase the area but it increases the distance (so it becomes a 5 x 1 line within 2)
But I'm pretty sure that's already working right last time I checked

There is a plugin to have your stamina and recoveries tied to your token, with a button to spend a recovery and fields for temp stamina and surges, but I don't think you can automatically get the values from Forge Steel

Maybe I've missed something, but I had a level 3 tactician before the release, and am trying to level up to 4.
I input the XP to the character, it give me the prompt that there's enough XP to level up, and when I go in to Edit, it asks me to level up to 5, not 4. I hit the button and try to level down with the (-) and it goes right back to 3?

Level above 3 might not have been implemented yet, the game came out not that long ago
All levels are implemented. Not sure what the issue is, might need to rebuild your character or unselect and reselect your class. Might be an issue with your old character not interacting well with the updated data, characters won't auto update (because they are stored locally, I think)

I found in interesting edge case with immunities: a revenant with a blue color cloak. Under normal circumstances the second source of cold immunity is redundant, however when activating the cloak having the second source would make a difference. The crux is that it isn't necessarily intuitive in the UI, e.g. a non-revenant player would know to just treat the listed immunity as a weakness instead, whereas the secondary source means that in fact both would apply.
Can anyone think of similar scenarios, or is this just an isolated edge case. And does anyone have thoughts on how to address it, if it is even worth considering?

If you add the standard 'infiltrate the palace' montage you can see what the various bits are used for
I have a question: I ran session 0 for new players today. Used Forge Steel and 2 characters worked perfectly, but 1 player's sheet wouldn't export as pdf. Tried letting him dictate his options to me and I couldn't export it on my computer either. Was a Revenant/Tactician. Curious if anyone else has this problem and if its related to character choices?
One of my players is having trouble exporting character sheet pdfs (exports as data just fine) as a Mastermind Tactician. I tinkered around with removing parts until I could export and it's specifically choosing Mastermind as the Tactical Doctrine that causes it to not export. An otherwise empty character that's only selected Tactician and Mastermind refuses to export as pdfs. Is this a known issue? Or should I submit a bug report? Or is it a me problem?
I have an existing Mastermind Tactician, it exports just fine, but when I made a new Mastermind Tactitician it will not export in either portrait or landscape modes. So, there might be a bug introduced in a recent (last 3-5 days based on my existing one) edit.

I love Forge Steel with all my heart but is there anything on the roadmap to do a login system so I can access my stuff from multiple machines? I do a lot of pbp and sometimes am on my work PC, or home PC or phone and not being able to bring everything with me and needing to export, import all the time is killing me! Any thoughts on doing like a Google login to bring our encounters and stuff with?
I've been giving some thought to contributing support for (optional) Google Drive login. I'm still at the drawing board for how to approach it in a manner that might make it possible for sharing among a group.

Something like Fresh Cut Grass for Daggerheart is so helpful because I can save encounters, damage some enemies then load the site on my phone and immediately see all health and stuff and adjust in real time.

i believe the challenge there is that data is stored on a server and then passed down to you, while Forge Steel (afaik) will be storing your stuff in local storage for your browser. Andy would have to run a whole backend data server and user login system which immediately increases complexity and adds a variety of security compliances into the mix
owlbear 1.0 didn't have a login and it worked great, idk how. Maybe one person could be the "host" of the party - keep all the heroes on their local machine (mayb ejust in browser cookies) and everyone could "join th eparty" when theyre playing, just send updates to the host. End of the session, no more clients on the host, and the host has all the updated hero sheets
Afaik OBR 1.0 stored everything in browser data on the host machine and then used a p2p handshake for the session. Since there was nothing sensitive stored, security would have been less critical.
Ah gotcha, yeah there are a handful of export chunk options, though not an everything option.

if the hero sheets were all hosted by a single person (ostensibly the director), there could also be an export option that did a full-party health check. Like how many recoveries they've burned through in aggregate
could also make potency checks easier for the director. basilisk uses petrying eye beam and you dont have to say "ok whoever got a tier one, if your reason is less than 1 then blah but if you got a tier two, then..." you could just ask for tiers and tell each person what happens
I guess that's not a feature of the architecture anymore, just something I wish I was keeping track of better

I'd love to be able to mass export as AmbyNavy has requested. The "Folder" system is already a good way to keep characters organized. Sourcebooks is another good example of organizing info already in Forge Steel. Maybe a 'Campaign' organization method that can be applied to Characters, Sourcebooks, Encounters, Montages, Negotiations, and Tactical Maps so they can be exported together?
This would be mostly a workaround until some form of login or direct sharing is available.
exporting is still nice because it means i own my data and its on my system instead of a server somewhere
Possible tiny bug: I exported a Soldier today (iPad, Safari) and noticed that the 1 starting Renown didn’t make it to the PDF. Instead it displayed as 0.
Suggestion: Would be nice if in the Kit Selection I could also search for things like "Disengage".
Commenting to place-hold this interesting possibility - as Director, I'd love to be able to see all my players sheets on Forge Steel while each of them also have (a fully-sync'd) view of their own sheet too 🤞 If I've missed something here and this is already possible then please put me out of my ignorant misery! 😅
Another thing, I noticed that Knockback and Grab lack the Weapon keyword. They have it in the book.
By the way, it's nice that you can see things like damage values and potencies all calculated, but it'd be nice if you could also see the original formula.
Hey Andrew nice seeing you here, but I'd also love to see my players sheets (or maybe just skills) in one view.
My way around this was to have all my players send me a data export of their characters, then imported them all into a folder on my Forge Steel. Within that folder, I can see everyone’s ability scores, languages known, and skills in a single table, which has been SUPER handy.
It’s not dynamically updating and doesn’t include stamina or recoveries of course, but it’s still really useful.
This is probably what I'll do after I've migrated my 5e group to DS (via the Delian Tomb adventure), and we switch to full character sheets 😄

There are some bugs that need to be worked through, mostly to do with levels 4+, but for lower levels it should be good
Most bugs are also relatively manageable, to my knowledge the most impactful is that the PDF export doesn't like the ≥ character that is present in a few places. Notably, the Studied Commander feature of the Mastermind and the Zeitgeist feature of the Troubadour are affected by this.

Question, is there a way to change what stat an ability's power roll uses just in the menu? Because I wanna override Knockback and Grab to use Intuition since I'm making a Null.

hmm, good question. I haven't actually done any homebrew stuff myself, but you're right it does look like the level of 'make a homebrew of this' is at e.g. the Class level and such, not for the standard abilities.
maybe you could make a homebrew Null, and add a 'Null Knockback' and 'Null Grab' class ability?
I managed to figure out a place to do it but it's really not an ideal place. I made an entire fork of the Null except it has an intuition Grab and Knockback- oh yeah like that
I think I might just slap notes on the bottom of the default ones for now though, since I don't fully remember how much of the hero stuff is updated from playtest versions yet and I wouldn't want to exclude myself from potential updates/fixes

Looks like the potency in the troubadour 5 cost ability Method Acting isn't working.
I also noticed my starting Renown got dropped from 2 to 0 when exporting to pdf.
I've seen other people mention the Renown issue - I'm working on an overhaul of the PDF export to try and make it look a lot more like the official character sheet (and get rid of using templated PDFs altogether) and I have that fixed on my (still WIP) branch.
You can export data from the Forge Steel UI, though I would expect there to be a fair volume of headaches with differences between how things are structured between the platforms.
Export will work, hoping to create a common schema across the DS community tools. Then folks can export/import as they want. Probably not a great idea, but I think I'll give it a shot anyways.

Well, I've helped contribute some to Forge Steel, and I would contend it is not quite so simple. There's a lot more structure to get thing to hook up and interact than just formatting the text.
Oh I mostly meant the API design itself should be relatively straightforward, if you're actually interacting with the API it's a lot more challenging for sure
Each app that uses the API would need to create a transform that takes the data and makes it a usable object. This is not simple, but very solvable. The advantage is the data entry (non programmer) part will be way easier and a joint effort between all the tools.
As right now you are copying pasting monster name, stamina, speed, ect in all the tools over and over

Not exactly, the tool wouldn't have enough data from the API unless the API already understood the data structures at least as well as the tool. Because converting the text to something more is a task that either requires human input or [topic not allowed on this discord]

With some Conduit characters, domain-specific effects don't show up under the Prayer feature. Creating a fully new character seems to work OK, but importing a character I made a couple weeks ago absolutely won't display the domain effects, even if I delete and re-add domains, switch browsers, switch devices, etc. Also, the pregen Conduit doesn't have a Prayer feature at all on the digital sheet, and still doesn't even if I delete & readd domains, etc.
Any idea what might be causing this, or any workarounds?
have you tried unselecting the class and reselecting?
iirc the Prayer feature appears under the Piety generation area on the sheet
Okay, yes, tested this works, thanks! This does require choosing all the class features and abilities again, though, which is...not ideal, especially for a pre-gen.
FWIW even when the domain effects don't appear on the web sheet, they do appear on the PDF export, so it's not the end of the world even for new players trying to use the pregen—just inconvenient.
maybe one day we'll have a way to refresh the class of a hero without repicking everything 🙏

Re: refreshing without needing to reselect probably won't be too terrible of a feature to add, though I doubt it'll ever be able to automate the volume of changes from the preview packet to the full release. That would almost certainly be more work than the combined effort of manually refreshing every character from the preview version
Though tbf I'm just speculation, maybe Andy has a truck up his sleeve (edit: no, I don't think I will fix the typo)

More a question of when rather than if.
I think I spotted a couple issues with the troubadour:
- The invocation "Allow Me to Introduce Tonight’s Players" is there but unnamed.
- The level three 7-cost abilities are all missing except "Extensive rewrites"
- I can only pick one melodrama option instead of two.
I just made pull requests for about 10 or 11 errata’d abilities and monsters.
A lot of the errata is already fixed on the site, because abilities with typos and miscalculated potencies were already caught.
I put in the new ones and some re-worded/clarified abilities.
I'll get a PR up for this later today unless you're already tackling it, Andy.
I made a custom ancestry and I have two comments:
• I tried to make a new character and it didn't pull the ancestry I had just made as an option.
• I want to add a Condition immunity but didn't see an option to add one. Short of copying the ancestry with the Condition Immunity i want, i don't see a way to make it work.
For #1, you need to add the sourcebook the homebrew is in to the character in the editor

Not sure if this has been asked apologies in advance, but is it possible to have multiple complications?
Not directly to my knowledge, most of the current homebrew support appears to be for making new content within the system rather than adjusting the system itself. That said you can get to the same end result fairly easily by adding the complication benefit and drawback as new features with Customize menu for the hero.
Raw you can have more than one complication often by gaining them later, so could we get that added as a feature? (Or is there somewhere better to add feature requests)
For clarity, while I offer some help to the development Forge Steel I have no direct say in the process. Presumably here or GitHub would both be good places for feature requests.

Well the complications doesn’t say anything RAW to my understanding that you can only have 1, and James has mentioned several times that they can be introduced throughout the campaign
Further as an example, there’s a secret complication you can get in the Monsters book on page 349

If you indeed believe it’s not RAW to have more than 1, perhaps the option to add more could be under a homebrew tab or something directly, so it’s clear to new players, but you also have the option to add more later
100% of the language on that page is singular when regarding the selection of a complication. It would be redundant therefore to say anything about taking two complications. Further this matches the language used on page 69 regarding the singular selection of a Class. Though probably we've explored this topic as far as needed for the purposes of Forge Steel, given that the interest is present either way for Andy to consider (or others to make a PR for Andy to consider).

The intent, and actual thing written on the page, is definetely that your character can have 0 or 1 complication and no more
Though I also expect that if someone asked James about it on a Livestream his answer would be along the lines of "if everyone involved is cool with it, I don't see why not"

for example with the culture, it is sort of expected that when you are using a bespoke creature, you actually assign which group that is about (given you get an edge in things related to them), and if we are making new titles we can't change their name out of "Custom Title" (though maybe that's a bug? I found 2 text boxes in there but they don't see to be editable)
I'm having trouble getting a second level subclass "choose one 5HR ability" for a custom class to show up on the character sheet. Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?
Does it not show up when it should? Might be that you added that to the class after adding the class to the hero.
That's right, it should appear with my other main abilities but does not. However, I'm pretty sure that it's not a order of operations thing because I've made a few new characters with the class, all with the same issue.

Hello. the range for the 'friend catapult' perk is listed as 0, when choosing perks, likely because the Might score has not yet been determined. this wording might need a tweak at this stage.
You can click on the blue lighting icon on the top right and it will show you the original language for the ability.
Not sure if someone's mentioned this already, but I think the PDF export got borked, it's running everything together with no bullet points or new line spacing. I know at least on the 10th it was formatting the PDF just fine
Mea culpa. I was trying to be too clever. Fixed now.
Bespoke cultures can now be named in the Hero Builder (during creation or the Edit button from an existing hero).
Also incase anyone is interested homebrewing custom item imbuements is a little easier now. Imbuements have been added as a Library data type rather than being attached to individual items as customizations. Additionally the crafting requirements have been added for each. They are still gained by heroes in much the same way from the Inventory screen.
I just noticed, the PDF export is A4. Unfortunately, my paper is letter sized, now I don't have a problem with that, it's easily accounted for in print settings, but I noticed because my print was cut off. Was wondering if it might be possible to indicate that the export is A4 size? So that people don't accidentally waste paper when printing if they didn't know

Hello! I think there's an issue with exporting to a PDF. I was able to do it for characters without a kit, but for the others I had to remove the kit before I could.
Actually, upon second look it could be specifically the raider kit as thats what both of these players picked.
interesting, the PDS exporter does fail when I try to export a character with that Kit - but the character it fails on (0x200e, the left-to-right mark) doesn't seem to be in the kit data anywhere I can see?
