Fortnite began from an internal game jam at Epic Games following the publishing of Gears of War 3 around 2011. and it was release in 2017. Ofc it wasnt 100% actively developed during the early years but yeah.. + you need a game server, authenticatin, login and what not

as long as you make sure not to copy their code, assets, whatever they own
but yeah, fortnite is not a game that you can make on your own on a reasonable amount of time

the same happened in other games probably too
