Trying to see if there’s a way to get some family out of western Ukraine but seems like they’d have to smuggle half the family out if they were to do it properly

fervent cobalt

getting women and children out of there is possible, friends of mine managed to get them here. men between 18-60 is a challenge

yeah, the 15 yo son won't leave by himself and the mother won't leave the older son, 19, by himself...

I mean I don't discount that there might be some reactionary sentiments within the various nationalist movements in Ukraine that you wouldn't necessarily have over for dinner, but I put it forward that having a brooding neighbor with nostalgia for "the good old days" isn't conducive to reducing their clout in society.

#

Then there's the invasion :/

mossy sky

There is no denying there is some nazi style elements in Ukraine, but I think that goes for just about every country

so by that logic it is fair to invade any country you say

sharp gate

well, the problem with a giant convoy on a single, narrow road is that they're basically all sitting ducks

#

and there's nowhere to go

#

All together now, REVERSE!

shy whale
#

There was an interesting twitter thread about tires. Not something I thought I would be saying

#

But it claimed that the russian wheeled vehicles had been standing still for so long and exposed to sun, that the tires can't handle being deflated for muddy conditions. So they have to stick to roads

sharp gate
#

I guess it'll take a while for the tires to rot

simple berry
#

Doesn't help when the Russian army appears to be mostly forced children and teachers who have no military training and run out of fuel

sharp gate
#

but yeah, lol

shy whale
#

Another commenter, claiming to be a tire nerd, said that the tires are cheap chinese copies of Michelin tires and not at all suited for extreme conditions lmao

simple berry
#

Will be -10c next week in Ukraine, it will be hard for the people

Then suddenly, Martial Law, k spaciba, das vidanya

Video title and the tiny bit of russian i understand match each other
russians in ukrain, who have run out of food since 3 to 4 days and no one is there to help them and they are still waiting on someone to pick them up
sleeping on the ground, feet wet, dont know what they shall do, thats how the russian army works

mossy sky
flint palm
mossy sky
#

they are hardy creatures, just have to look at what they managed in WW2. Maybe the Russian millennial\ is a bit different tho

flint palm
#

Hastening the development of callous killbots 😦

quick crescent
#

its sad to see, that so many young people are thrown into ukrain to fight, without even knowing why and if they refuse, they'll likely end up in a gulag

flint palm
#

Well, I suppose we'll get to see if the Kremlin can get away with it, in this day and age.

quick crescent
#

they wont, but with putin on the trigger of nuclear weapons, its gonna be hard

flint palm
#

I'm thinking more internally;

#

Whether regular people will stand for this

#

Soldiers are going to go home and tell of their experiences, even if the media tows the Government narrative

quick crescent
#

well, protestors are put into jail and i've heard, not confirmed tho, that they are singing a law, that any russian protesters are send as meat shields into the front of the war in ukrain

flint palm
#

Ah, but you forget

#

There is no war

#

It's a special operation

quick crescent
#

Yeah yeah, they are removing nazis

flint palm
#

They can't have it both ways

#

human shields wouldn't be necessary in a limited special operation

#

Now, in a war mind you

quick crescent
#

i feel really sorry for all the innocent people in that war, but what can ya do

flint palm
#

Even if protesters get a raw deal, there will be no luck forcing all these soldiers into secrecy once they come home

quick crescent
#

i really hope, that the russians will take out the ones in command themselves soon

flint palm

Well hopefully it ends with a realization that wars aren't good. But it's probably going to get worse before that.

This is about that farmer dragging the piece of heavy machinery with his tractor? The news called it a "tank", but a) that seems ridiculous and b) the news does often think that everything is a tank

mossy sky
mossy sky
quick crescent
#

if its armored and has a turret, its a tank
it can also be a tank, if its a machine thats still running since 40 years, just like sovjet tech

mossy sky
#

An armoured fighting vehicle in the form of an APC or LAV isn’t a tank, regardless of turret or not

simple berry
#

Ukrainian government even told citizens they don't have to declare the value on their taxes next year

quick crescent
#

has tracks, as armor, has turret = tank

mossy sky
#

One fires bullets, the other a HE shell

quick crescent
#

yeah see, both fire shells

mossy sky

That one’s not a tank.

quick crescent

so its a tonk

mossy sky
#

Ask anyone that’s done time in the military. Not a tank.

quick crescent
#

ask any civilian

#

its a tank

mossy sky
#

It would be like saying any pump action centre fire weapon is a shot gun. Just because it has a pump action and everyone knows that noise from movies where the actor is using a shot gun

quick crescent
#

yes

mossy sky
#

A pump action rifle is not a shot gun just because it has a stock and a pump

#

Likewise, an IFV isn’t a tank just because it has armour and tracks

#

And a turret

quick crescent
#

yes it is

#

well, its not, but its seen as one because it shares more similarities with tank, then with a car

mossy sky
#

Ok. Not going to change your mind, just hope you never try to convince someone who was tank crew and has had a few drinks that their vehicle is the same as an IFV.

#

šŸ˜‚

simple berry
#

Of that rolled into my town

I'd yell "a tank!"

quick crescent

mossy sky

Tank Vs Tank - they can destroy each other. That thing above would be turned inside out instantly, it wouldn’t put a hole through a tanks armour

In my opinion, Nuclear is perfectly fine; considering other options

limpid lynx

It would have been the better decision to first shut down other conventional power plants before the nuclear ones here in germany

limpid lynx
flint palm
#

Fukushima's main issue, afaik was that they put the backup generators for the cooling rig was flooded

#

Other than that, the reactors weren't damaged during the earthquakes

cold yoke
#

Nah, it's safe, you can hit with tank ammo and nothing happens

flint palm
#

Also the spent fuel rods were left over in the reactors

#

so that amplified the cockup when things went wrong

limpid lynx
#

Maybe one time we have technologies to after use the old fuel from the conventional nuclear power plants, that would be nice. But conventional nuclear power plants do not have a long time future

flint palm
#

They could have taken the spent fuel out and moved it somewhere else, but everyone is a NIMBY when it comes to hosting Nuclear waste storage sites

My main problem with getting bogged down in whether Euro-Maidan was a neo-nazi CIA in IMF's clothing coup is that I wonder what good it is to people fleeing invasion and having their country bombed for an ever evolving gaggle of ostensibly altruistic reasons, according to the Kremlin.
I can't shake the feeling that the result is to make us go: Oh, well Happy Hunting, Mr Putin.
I'm not saying this is you, Russell and the Jacobin's motivation; but I still think it's a possible end result to consider.
For me, I am in rally around the flag mode. Russia is on our northern border and the conflict is happening next to two NATO allies. The scope for miscalculations and just something going terribly wrong under the cover of the fog of war has us at the brink. A clear posture is necessary. Discussion of bygones are for later, imho

Jesaus. It's like something from First Dog On The Moon.

cold yoke

I was helping with whole refugee situation as voulonteer driver. Our company gave us cars and the fuel.

#

It's difficult. They've told me their stories, it's more than few pictures in a TV. And don't believe the news, here in Poland whole humanitarian support is made by people , government don't coordinate it. No one does. It's total mess, but somehow it works

cold yoke
#

All big cities are full, we have no place for refugees. We ar relocating them to smaller ones

#

But they are arriving to the big ones

flint palm
#

The Polish people are stepping up in a big way šŸ¤Ž

cold yoke
#

but we are exhausted a bit, time for governments move

flint palm
#

Grassroots campaigns are trying to get a good stream of refugees to Norway as well, but some missteps in early efforts has caused a bad rep, so there is a lot of apprehension about getting into cars and buses to random countries

#

The organisation gets better gradually but the news of good things doesn't spread nearly as far and wide as the bad

cold yoke
#

They really has no idea where they want to go.

#

Most of them won't go so far, they hope that the war will be over soon

That makes sense. Especially with the men having to stay. Going further away is probably not an easy decision to make.

cold yoke
#

Problem is that younger poles, who actually helps as voulonteers , didn't learn Russian, so there's a problem

#

English doesn't help, younger Ukrainian knows the basis, but most of refugees are mid aged women and little kids

#

And also old people

#

There is a woman, who helps with translations, she speaks fluent Russian, i think she is professional translator. She's there from the beginning of refugee Crysis, every single day , and no one pays her

simple berry
#

If I had any usable skills I would too, unfortunatly the best I can do is currently nothing since private households aren't allowed to accept refugees here yet

#

mentioned it to the wife the other day we have a spare room, but Shrug

They did (or still do?) use Chinese cheap radios, there was a major corruption scandal in Russian army. Someone took a bunch of money for next gen encrypted communication system called R-187-P1 Azart and imported some cheapo crap , the "factory" in Russia just replaced stickers on them. I think some military was arrested, including colonel Arslanov and gen. Ogloblin

The trials of ruling a cleptocracy.
When the people at the top get their beaks wet, the inclination to defraud trickles down the ranks.

While I mostly want the war to be over, a decisive blow to the autocratic patronage state model would be a silver lining to this grim cloud

simple berry

Considering the Russians are using regular Ukraninan SIM cards to relay information to troops, and a lot of it is going unecrypted

nothing suprises me at this point

cold yoke

All post-soviet countries are more or less cleptocracy, corruption and defrauding. I think we still were there about 15-10 years ago. Ukraine is still there. I heard that refugees on the border could pay to not wait in queue.
