I am researching what sensors to buy in order to reliably sense whether someone is in this bathroom at home or not, without the use of cameras. The included picture is a rough diagram of the bathroom. I plan to use it to control some lights. I've thought of the traditional infrared sensors but those will have trouble when the person isn't moving

The door is usually closed regardless of whether someone is in there, so a door sensor wouldn't help

mmwave is what you want its great for occupancy detection even when a person is "not moving".
I have a setup that's probably about the same size but slightly different layout.

I put one of THESE into the ceiling pointing down. (mmwave can see through stuff like thinner walls and ceilings)
Adjusted a zone for making sure doesn't pick up stuff outside the room.
also I added a door sensor to increase the response time of a light coming on when someone opens the door but the setup works fine without it.

I know this won’t be a popular view but I find PIRs perform adequately for the 4 bathrooms in this house. Unlike a living room people don’t tend to sit around for hours being motionless. A 10 minute timeout is fine for controlling the lights and extraction fans. In terms of placement I’ve buggered about for ages coming up with clever ideas but in the end I’ve settled with placing the little Sonoff sensors on top of the doorframe pointing in. Looking at your little picture that might not work for you though.
