I've tried installing the home assistant app on multiple Samsung phones and I just cannot get anything to work. See screenshot. That's all I ever see. I enabled every single app permission cleared cache reinstalled multiple times nothing ever connects to the HA PE either ..

I don't have any weird configuration everything is stock on my phone

iPhone is not really much different. Both just scan and never connect to a new device with spinning dial.

How am I supposed to setup an address manually if I never set it up?

Have you set up a homeassistant instance?

#

After you setup a homeassistant instance, you can use the companion app to connect to it, similar to a webbrowser.

Yeah I think this is a big opportunity in the installation guide maybe?

If what I'm realizing is you have to actually have a server running before you can even connect to a local device that makes sense but I don't think it was spelled out anywhere

#

The branding is off and that's what threw me off.

We are calling the device a home assistant preview edition.

We have an app enabling Wi-Fi connection to a server called the home assistant.

And then we have a server called the home assistant server

#

Can call me dumb and move on but I'm willing to bet a lot of people would be helped on this one if there were more guide posts in the app and the different installation manuals

I kinda cant follow where the confusion comes from. The link I posted above is both part of the initial search results on google aswell it being being a prominently placed "get started" on the website. It then introduces itself as ⁨⁨The first step to getting started with Home Assistant is to install it on a device. ⁩⁩ followed by all the options to install and run homeassistant.

#

Searching for the homeassistant app instead, rather quickly yields https://companion.home-assistant.io/docs/getting_started/ which outlines that you need a running Home Assistant instance. Which is also indicated by the app stating ⁨⁨select homeassistant server (...) make sure your server is on⁩⁩ as can be seen on your images.

It says install 'it' on a device.
I assumed it is 'home assistant' referred to earlier.
As I said there are 3 distinctions (server, app, device) not being made

Since the device help points to this document I assumed it meant the hardware .. and that it was telling me to install it with the android app somehow

#

I think these are things more hardcore developers just take for granted or as obvious.

#

I definitely didn't read it , but to succeed in markets it is important to be brutally clear with any level of intelligence. Make it idiot proof

#

'before trying to connect to the device with the app, you must have HA software working on a server'

Step 1 - establish server
Ideal sub step - click link somewhere to verify it's working (some sort of control)

If this passes then download the app.

Etc.

I'm pretty convinced this is the app. I had that issue too for several days and it eventually just disappeared, then came back a week later. Sensor updates work fine and a standard web browser on the same device works too.
