I have a sick family member and a large house. I'm looking for some kind of button they can carry/wear in the house, that can send a trigger/button event to home assistant. Is there anything that's known working with hass? I'm worried about zigbee because of the person moving about the house. Maybe wifi, or ?

ok, so before I suggest anything...
Home Assistant should not be used for anything that is medical/life critical. it is not designed to be used for it and is not necessarily as robust as required.
There are specific devices that are made for the task you describe and you should use them instead.

that all being said if you ignore the warning and go down the route anyway, a BLE button along with a bunch of Bluetooth proxies around the house to ensure signal. you could also add a bacon with the button and a bermuda setup. this would allow you to detect where the becon is. although this is not a perfect system but would lead to potential information of "sos button pushed whilst in bedroom"

you could also use esphome based pressence sensors as your BT proxies and help automate lights etc...

Personally i would be looking for a solution outside home assistant with fall detection etc. These product exist.
Technically, when well implemented zigbee would be just as reliable as wifi, or even moreso while moving around because of the automatic meshing.

If you go the bluetooth route you could check out the Shelly BLU tough. I used it before as a keychain button.

Just to be clear, this isn't life critical. It's more "I need water" level stuff. We aren't there yet...

I ordered one of the shelly BLE devices, I'm going to try that out and see how it works. I've heard conflicting info on the zigbee, some people have said it doesn't adapt to the mesh well if you keep moving about with a battery device

i wouldnt use zigbee for something moving around either tbh

I have like 3-4 proxies in the house, but honestly, I've never actually used them for anything

yeah.. thats a good idea.. thanks. I also bought one of the wall sirens from zooz, hoping I can turn the volume down so it's not obnoxious. My office is in a casita, so my plan was homeassistant so I can get a phone notification, and also ping the siren for people in the house without the app, etc

other shelly devices (at least the newer ones) can also be BT proxies. so if you have any of them around you can switch that on on the device and enable it in HA to get more proxies.

was looking at the dedicated alert things, but they just don't have the range I would need... hrmm.. might have to buy more shelly then if I need that.. yeah.. some quick proxies would be good

Do you happen to know if the HA Voice system can be made to beep or talk when the privacy mode switch is on?

yeah

# winter totem yeah

that is a hardware microphone mute switch. you can still use it as a speaker to make noise.

awesome. I have one, but then decided I hate voice activation, so the privacy mode has been permanently on. but the speaker part would be useful still.

i was just thinking. I don't know what options there are but if you could get a button that was Z-Wave LR and paired that with a ZWA-2 then range would likely never be an issue. it being sub ghz means it would go through walls better too. with it in direct connection setup (non-mesh) it would be fine to move around with. potentially also can get a z-wave alarm too. which means even if wifi was down it would work as its all on z-wave

winter totem
#

oh, thats a good idea.. I'll have to look and see if there is a zwave LR button out there.

#

the siren I ordered to test is a zooz 800 series, so that should be LR

#

thank you so much

this is definitely one of those things. where there are a huge amount of options and you have to find the one that works for you.
but as I said before. if things get to a point where they are life critical consider using something else.

Right now the pointis it's hard for them to get around, so, need a way to summon someone rather than have them expend effort to come out of the room
