#Question regarding Frigate and cameras

I have a super quick question regarding Frigate and cameras:

We have had break ins in our apartement garage
And I wonder if cameras with frigate would be helpful?

Is it possible to for example detect people wearing masks or covering their faces?
And send an emergency message to the phone via some app?

Its a small garage with like 20-30 spots, and 2-3 cameras should do I believe.

Movement causes the lights to turn on in the garage, so visibility should not be an issue.

And I think that I might be able to set this up, given the housing-cooperative can fund the costs.

They currently cant afford installing cameras as companies that do probably charge a ton
A mini pc with 2-3 cameras should sit under 1000usd I believe..

Could save them tons of dollars.. Thoughts?
I also wonder if one can integrate a sound sensor, that detects car alarms or windows getting smashed in..

I suppose one can use the "small" face detection model, or maybe the face detection model is not even needed for simple person detection. But I do not think privacy laws would allow that

honest tiger
#

fun project? yes. functional? maybe... who knows.
but as a bonus you get to play dress up to test it.

#

Yeah..

#

I have no idea about visiom LLMs if one can run those locally

#

There are some apparently!

#

But I suppose that would require a dedicated gpu

#

Yeah

honest tiger
#

i messed with the 2.5 one a while ago but I haven't messed with the new one based on 3 yet

grizzled kayak
#

I see..

honest tiger
#

a dedicated GPU is likely going to be the way to go

grizzled kayak
#

Regarding the sound sensor, I suppose one could have a sound sensor that detects the decibel levels or somethin for car alarms etc

#

As weve had break ins that mostly smash windows and steal stuff from inside the car

#

Anyways the camera system would be helpful if the thieves did not wear masks, and if they do, I might do the thing you mentioned with an LLM

honest tiger
#

you could detect freqency rather then db level. or there are also "glass break sensors" that detect the sound of glass breaking.

grizzled kayak
#

Wow

#

That is super helpfull

#

Should I demand getting paid btw? I just want to help tbh, but maintaining it etc will take time i believe

#

Silly question

#

I dont have a company in my name so i dont even think that will be possible haha

honest tiger
#

you mention "housing co-oprative" i assume there are dues you pay? you could maybe arrive for an agreement that you can do the stuff and get a discount or something?

grizzled kayak
#

Free internet haha, 20 dollars per month

honest tiger
#

but you have to realise that you are signing up to be the service contract too. and if/when you move out you will have decisions to make.

grizzled kayak
#

yes, i really have to consider that part

#

as a private person I cant do any of this myself ofc, everything has to be approved by the housing coop

#

but the question is how they can contract someone like me

#

ill probably have to look that up or just ask them

#

the other question is if they are even going to believe my capacity haha

#

spending 1000+ usd on gear and it ending up not being functional

#

💀

#

but im pretty good at convincing people on that matter so i think that part will be fine

honest tiger
#

i feel like its the kind of thing they will know about options for.

#

they probably have residents that do stuff for them and have a system worked out

#

you could also use an cloud LLM and ask them to pay for it?

#

that saves building an AI system

grizzled kayak
#

GDPR is an issue

#

yeah

#

gathering consent will probably not be possible nor something everyone will agree upon

honest tiger
grizzled kayak
#

yeah it could indeed

honest tiger
#

if someone dislikes the concept they could just give you GDPR requests for footage to annoy you.

grizzled kayak
#

hahahah...

#

i was planning on only running it 21:00-07:00, which would ease people

#

and having logging setup, where each acces must be logged with a reason etc

#

but as an system admin I could probably circumvent that anyways..

honest tiger
#

small companies have been cripled by people spamming must-comply requests at them. GDPR has some abuse cases...

grizzled kayak
#

interesting

honest tiger
#

I know your trying to do the right thing (and maybe have a little fun whilst your at it) but there are a bunch of potential downsides.

grizzled kayak
#

i wonder how one, after installing the system, can apply limited acces as even the system admin

#

oh one could split the password up amongst several people haha

grizzled kayak
#

it was a fun thought experiment and i appreciate your help, well see

honest tiger
#

try and get a presence instead. see if you can get an overnight car washer.

grizzled kayak
#

it happens rarely tbh

#

once or twice per 3-6 months

#

but it has been happening for 2 years

honest tiger
#

its just a fact of life i guess.

grizzled kayak
#

mm..

honest tiger
#

is it just the occasional break ins or do you get loitering etc... too?

grizzled kayak
#

no just the break ins, where they smash 1 or 2 car windows

#

cause people leave stuff in their cars

honest tiger
#

are you close to a police station? offer them a couple of parking spots to use as overflow if needed. nothing stops a criminal like a police car sitting there 😛

grizzled kayak
#

hahahaha

#

not a bad idea 😄

honest tiger
#

or build a small pretend security office from a shed with a big camera on the front with a light inside and a cardboard cutout behind a frosted window

#

looks like person is there

grizzled kayak
#

!!!!!

#

these are some insanely creative ideas haha

honest tiger
#

motion sensor attached to a speaker that plays a dog barking is another one.

grizzled kayak
#

😭 😭

honest tiger
#

you dont have to super secure everything if you can make it a slightly less attractive target compared to somewhere else.

grizzled kayak
#

yeah.. ill think in that direction a bit

honest tiger
#

just like "you don't have to outrun the bear... just the other person you are with."

#

I have random ideas all the time usually they get filtered but a few have slipped through here 🙂

grizzled kayak
#

dont stop with the creativity !

#

and thanks a lot for all the help, i will probably as i said just leave it be. i have ordered my first mini pc for a homelab so I cant really risk failing setting up the system for them

honest tiger
grizzled kayak
#

prices jumped the day after i ordered a pair

#

and I found a pretty good deal for a mini pc, 600 eur for a barebone with a Ryzen 9 HX 370

honest tiger
#

i built a new desktop a few weeks ago. the kit i paid £250 GBP for is now 900+

grizzled kayak
#

It was 1000 eur, but discounted to 600

honest tiger
#

its gunna get worse before it gets better

grizzled kayak
#

im lucky I bought a desktop pc this summer, but i wish i equipped it with just one more set of 32gb ram.

honest tiger
#

i have been working on a mini rack but that is probably gunna end up on hold.

grizzled kayak
#

2026 is already sold out, and they are apparently bidding for the 2027 stock as of now

grizzled kayak
#

i dont know if you also saw that microns crucial is shutting down

honest tiger
#

best estimate is q2 2027 for it to start moving in the right direction and q1/q2 2028 for some degree of returning to normal.

grizzled kayak
#

i fear a future where hardware is outsourced, where consumers have to pay a monthly fee for compute

honest tiger
#

if they are selling only to DC's and not consumers then they will be making less SKU's which means they can use production lines more efficiently with less retooling time. so their output goes up. so the industry as a whole gains capacity.

grizzled kayak
#

i see...

honest tiger
#

but less price competition is the flip side of that but i dont think thats an issue for now.

grizzled kayak
#

yeah huge bottlenecks will be cleared up

#

testing binning etc

honest tiger
#

the thing where openai announced how much they are going to be buying a month for their "stargate" project and it turned out to be 40% of global production...

grizzled kayak
#

nvidia still hasnt signed, i wonder if something is going on or not

honest tiger
#

nvidia no longer shipping vram with gpu dies is gunna make the next series of gfx cards silly

#

card makers suddenly gotta source stuff they have never sourced during a shortage...

#

gunna see a 60 series cards coming with 2 or 4 gb of vram cos they cant get any more than that.

grizzled kayak
#

yeah that one was hard to digest

#

poor people

honest tiger
#

nvidia dont care that much about gamer cards anymore

#

over the last few years its gone from 80% of their business to like 6%

grizzled kayak
#

yeah

#

people say amd has a chance here

#

to capitalize the market but idk

#

I wonder how good GeForce NOW will get in the future, as it is, it is really really good

honest tiger
#

intel probably gunna gain more market share. their cards are getting there

grizzled kayak
#

Given one has a stable connection close to any of their servers

#

i see

honest tiger
#

a big issue with amd cards is their power efficientcy

#

they don't idle well

grizzled kayak
#

i see

honest tiger
#

and the problem with non cuda cards... is that they are not cuda...

#

vulkan is enabling a bunch of stuff these days but its just nowhere close.
