I ve been looking at smart locks now that i see amazon.de has some nice deals that finally ship to my location. I m mainly looking at the aqara u200 since i read switchbot can be unreliable. Problem is it s matter over thread and i have no clue whether i should buy a hub or not. Can someone help me out with this? I looked it up but didn t find any concrete answers. what i have now is wifi and zigbee over a dongle that s hooked up to my server. Also i m considering something from nuki but they don't have any sale going on and i m not sure it s worth the price

You need a "thread border router" for matter over thread. There's a variety of devices that work as one; many apple or google home devices do for example.

#

home assistant can be a thread border router itself via an add-on available for HAOS; for that you need a thread-capable USB radio like the ZBT-1, ZBT-2, or SLZB-07

#

thread does use ipv6, but in most cases you don't need to do anything special. the thread border router will take care of setting up a private ipv6 address range for devices on your lan to use to talk to thread devices.

#

(note that for the haos add-on, you need a second usb radio in addition to the one you're already using for zigbee)

Related: I received my switchbot lock ultra today because the U200 started to behave unreliable like the numerous 1 star reports on amazon.de show. Not saying that switchbot is better, but my experience with the U200 was not good. Two times it pulled the latch and opened the door fully instead of just unlocking it. It's a nice surprise to wake up to an open front door

But to answer the question: yes you need a thread border router, I used the nabu casa skyconnect stick and OTBR

probably? they have a variety of devices with different chipsets, but it's likely that anything with a thread rcp firmware available will work with the otbr addon.

Could a ZBT-2 be used as a thread border router with a Aqara U100 lock?

I really don't want a Aqara hub.

the ZBT-2 can be used along with the home assistant OTBR add-on to make a thread border router.

Thanks!
