I'm trying to run home assistant through Oracle VirtualBox to just test out the software and get used to it but I'm unable to get to the part were I can create an account.
I've tried uninstalling everything and redoing it and still the same outcome.
The furthest I've gotten to was "Preparing Home Assistant" and I've waited over 2 hours and still nothin.

#

Most of the time it just says this and I have to keep restarting until it gets an address

#

not sure if I need to increase or decrease or change anything here

Please run ha supervisor logs -vf.

I assume the host is connected via ethernet? You could try ha supervisor repair.

rich gulch
#

I'll try that

#

it says command completed successfully

delicate cape
#

Follow the logs again afterwards.

rich gulch
#

should I restart it after doin the command?

delicate cape
#

You can reboot via ha host reboot but I would have checked logs like this first.

rich gulch
#

I haven't restarted it yet

delicate cape
#

If a refresh In the browser looks the same then you can reboot.

rich gulch
#

I'll restart since it looks the same

delicate cape
#

If you restart a OS/VM it's a reboot 🙂
Pedantic but very important difference.

It's taking awhile but it just says "Waiting for the Home Assistant CLI to be ready..."

delicate cape

Hmm. Can you click/hover the turtle at the bottom of VB and show me what it says?

#

I feel like you might not have virtualization support for it.

Is VT-d enabled in the UEFI or Hyper-V active or memory integrity?

rich gulch
#

this thing?

delicate cape
#

Right now VB has no proper virtualization support. You could use Hyper-V instead or make it able to.

rich gulch
#

I can try hyper-v

#

that seemed to work

delicate cape
#

The disadvantage of Hyper-V is no USB support. I assume this is only a temporary install though, right? Virtualizing on windows shouldn't be the end game.

I was looking into the homeassistant green but im not sure if that's the way to go

delicate cape
rich gulch
#

lol I'm not sure what to go with

#

I want something that's good but not too expensive

delicate cape
#

Well what's the goal? Waht's the budget? What's wrong with my tiny suggestion there?

rich gulch
#

maybe a price around 159 (price of the HA Green) if possible
I'm planning on connecting the entire house to it and running some automations.
I'm currently looking through amazon and just adding stuff to my wish list haha

delicate cape
#

What is the price for a M920 Tiny on eBay for you?

#

Or just search N100 there and on amazon and aliexpress.

rich gulch
delicate cape
#

That's quite the range.

#

Definitely don't pay more than 150 for it.

#

Just for HAOS this would be enough for example.

rich gulch
#

how much slower are those compared to the beelink ones?
is there that much of a difference/will it impact anything?

delicate cape
#

Which beelink one?

delicate cape
#

For the green's CPU it's a bit complicated but see here

#

I'm only trying to illustrate how good of a deal you can get on eBay for a proper Mini PC.

rich gulch
#

I see

delicate cape
rich gulch
#

oooo

#

yeah

#

is there a huge difference in the performance with 8gb vs 16gb with HA?

delicate cape
#

No. A normal install works fine with 4G even. You need more if you want to virtualize (good idea) or if you run a lot of addons that are memory hungry. Code Server or ESPHome for example

#

This is my Test VM. I gave it 1/2G. Not a good comparison because it has basically 0 entities but just so you have a frame of reference.

#

Also the green only has 4G.

rich gulch
#

guessing it doesn't matter if it's a hdd or ssd?

delicate cape
#

It really does. SSD only.
