What about colors changing like battery levels? Blue, green red depending on the temperature.

People will also want to be able to configure thresholds which is not really an issue with battery levels

Thing is, I’ve been helping people over the last 8 years to color icons based on state. Especially thermometer icons have been among the most requested. Also, HA has been adding a few of those color thresholds (battery). Meaning, icon color says something about the state.

And icon color does Not say something about a device type (like red means a temperature device) That is what the icon does…. Imagine having a red icon on your fridge ;/)

Cut it short: to be consistent I feel icons should not be colored, or be colored with a clear meaning (like battery)

Or the many binary types of color. That is what we have state_color: true for

Especially a default dashboard should imho be super clear and not be reason for debate 😉

You'd def. Need a threshold setting. But i guess there would be ways to define a global state color threshold for thermometer devices.

That's why it's still experimental, we will propose a survey when released to gather feedback and it will be improved before being the default.

Battery threshold is really easy to do.

Temperature is very personal

I have my personal rules (using templates)
but I guess it will be different for every one

You'd have to give users a Baseline which they can edit themselves. Even between me and my gf, we have different opinions on warmth which is why I went with rather indecisive colors on my temperature card

Indeed. And different per temp sensor. I mean outdoor/indoor/fridge/processor etc can not be defaulted to 1 scheme. So unless we would get different classes of temp sensors, we shouldn’t color them

To have an option would be nice. And like you also said, not having to tell so many people they have to install card_mod and mess with css and templates would be a big improvement
