Not really sure how to communicate the issue other than inclusion of many new Zooz devices is a serious PINA.
Both SmartStart and regular Inclusion seem to need me to do it 4-5 times with factory reseting the Zooz device in between.
Distance from the controller isn't the issue. I have working devices sitting directly beside the new device.

Also, once they ARE finally included, they work like a dream. Its the getting there that I dread.

Just a small work on SmartStart, not sure if others see this...but it seems wonky to me. When I add something via SmartStart, it simply added to the provisioning list. Nothing happens immediately (as usually reg inclusion does) so then what are we supposed to be waiting for? I've given these over-night to find nothing worked. Then, if they ever DO work, the provisioning entry is still there? What is the thinking for that? Shouldn't it be removed from that provisioning list once successfully included?

Please tell me someone else has seen this and knows what I'm doing wrong.

Are you powering the devices AFTER adding them to the provisioning list?

SmartStart works flawlessly for me, can't recall a single issue ever over the last year. Only problem was when I did power on the device before adding the entry, and even then it might have needed to be excluded. 800-series Zooz devices that support LR will need to be manually activated since you get an option for LR.

Why would you want the provisioning entry deleted after inclusion? I'd rather not have to scan/enter the QR code a 2nd time if I need to exclude or factory reset it temporarily.

@vital crest I guess I just dont understand that provisioning list. I just assumed that once its added, its not needed anymore.

#

@hoary wind I did not know we were supposed to add to the provisioning list before we wire them into the wall / power them? Perhaps it means that I then need to factory reset or exclude?

Yes, I think I also never tried excluding WHILE the provision was added. Simply because I did not understand that it had to be first.

@vital crest "800-series Zooz devices that support LR will need to be manually activated since you get an option for LR."

Do you mean this? It seems to work the charm now. Just needed to add to provision list and ensure the item in that list is "active"

You can also click on the Protocol icon directly in the listing, it will toggle back and forth

Thanks again. I think this was the tiny misunderstanding resulting it huge problems. All working now it seems.

It's certainly not documented much in any of the end user docs (ZUI, HA).

vital crest
#

no?

hoary wind
#

HA docs do have a section on smart start inclusion

I would have definitely dropped a link if there was

hoary wind
#

I know it's there because it's required for certification

vital crest
#

That doesn't explain what a provisioning entry is though

#

which is what my comment was directed at, mostly

hoary wind
#

Oh I didn't pick that up

vital crest
#

Yeah, that's fair

Thanks again everyone for your help. From my pov, the Zooz device manuals say ZERO about order of events.

#

I think this is an important enough of a step, that both Zooz docs and HA would benifit if it hit you over the head with it.
EG. IMPORTANT: ORDER MATERS HERE: and the QR Code to the hub first, (provisioning entry) then install/power on the devices. If done out of order, you may have to exclude/reset.

hoary wind
#

Not entirely correct - if done out of order, you might have to power-cycle the device. although that depends on how long the device was on

#

I agree though, that manual isn't good when it comes to SmartStart
