Voice PE can't start setup

I can not discover the Voice PE using the companion app because the discover process requires bluetooth and my companion app on iPhone has not requested permission to use bluetooth. The instructions say: "On iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security and enable Bluetooth for Home Assistant." However an app will only appear in the list of apps available to enable bluetooth if the app has requested bluetooth permissions and the iPhone Companion app never does. Does anyone know of a trick to get the app to request permission so that I can give it permission?

I've tried on 2 phones and have tried deleting and reinstalling the app on both. I have also tried the MacOS app (where I can give it permission to use bluetooth), but it does not discover the Voice PE.

(also anyone else notice the high pitched buzzing sound this thing makes?)

In my case I did Settings->Apps->Home Assistant->Bluetooth (turn it on)

bluetooth is not listed on that screen. Ive given Home Assistant permission for everything listed there, but bluetooth is not an option.

Oh wow! sorry, not sure why not. I did see somewhere where someone else went to Companion App settings and turned Sensors on to get their BT working.

You can put the Bluetooth dongle into HA, and setup Bluetooth integration. It will pick up PE as well.
Also any ESPHome Bluetooth Proxy will do.

If I remember correctly, I set it up by throwing VoicePE‘s IP address into the ESPHome integration. I don’t think Bluetooth was involved.

To get IP for PE, you need to provision it. It's done through BLE Improv, if only you didn't flash it with custom firmware with WiFi creds included.

I thought it got dhcp IP by connecting it to my router.

How do you connect it to the router, if it doesn't know your WiFi credentials?

You probably can attach it to the LAN adapter via GROVE but it's definitely not a default setup.

I did it through the web browser. Could not get the app to work for the life of me.

Seems like this is a pretty serious bug in the app. Is there a way to report this to the devs?

It isn't warm, but I've never had it running for more than a few minutes while I tried to connect.

There's a way to submit issues for everything...documentation, HA core, add-ons, companion apps iOS or Android, and yes voice pe...

You can click on "issues" to see reported issues. Browse that, read through them get a feel. Compare what you think is a good submission vs a bad submission, and submit your own.

If you ever find an issue which someone submitted and you share the same, use the "thumbs up" emoji instead of adding "same here" or "me too", etc.
