We'll continue this conversation about it here to stop overfilling the main channel

but to answer your question @keen coral I am willing to take that into consideration. My plan is to use my old 3770K system where possible to run Ollama, and maybe some other stuff I can offload to it (it has 16GB RAM and a GTX 760), with Linux as its main boot OS. But having something else to run the main HAOS stuff. My Pi 3B will run PiHole for adblocking, with a VPN setup on it to ensure when out and about on my MacBook or Chromebook, they still get the PiHole treatment

#

and @inner summit nope, I don't have a server currently I can use. I have that old 3770K machine but that's already been assigned a specific task.

I'd rather use specific hardware. There's a reasonable possibility I won't be able to use the 3770K machine all that much. I'd need something low power (in terms of wattage) and low size (my 3770K machine is ATX), in order to appease my mum

N100s can do with 4-8W. At idle that is.

I run HA/Frigate/Bunch of other containers all on the same N100

and tbh, I'd be more likely to look at a Ryzen myself

inner summit
#

any cameras? now or in the future to maybe be pipped into HA?

my absolute stonker of a dual PC setup is a Ryzen 9 5900X main ATX machine (running Windows 11), and a Ryzen 7 5700G secondary ITX machine (on Pop_OS)

Yes, they're being powered by the same PSU, and are in the same case

Just for reference/comparison here's one of my 5700G PVE hosts. It's not doing anything right now but it also has a IPMI mainboard.

#

I would potentially add cameras in the future, we already have a Nest Video Doorbell

#

I'd probably put a 2TB SSD in the machine though

inner summit
#

if there are cameras to be involved and won't have the ability to add a dedicated gpu I would suggest going intel. quicksync is a beast

AMD is not great for low idle power btw

red ridge
#

hmm, but isn't ARM the way to go for low idle power?

Low budget intel is ok too

like what areas?

Just dont buy anything expensive hw wise if you're only going to run HA. HA runs single threaded. It's wasted compute

inner summit
#

heck right now there are tons of N100 mini pc's on sale for black friday as low as like 130 bucks

inner summit
red ridge
#

I'd be getting one new though, don't plan to go used

inner summit
#

think it has higher cache

#

N100 isn't used

red ridge
#

I'm finicky with my tech stuff and really dislike getting it used

livid charm
#

I buy all my PC parts used, saved me thousands over the years 😄

red ridge
#

urgh, single channel RAM

inner summit
#

don't worry about that

#

the machine will be able to handle HA and all the other stuff you want to tie into HA.. except that voice crap you mentioned. in that case I think someone was talking like that path requires a pretty beefy machine

#

beefy gpu i mean

red ridge
#

yeah. I was going to offload that to something else

inner summit
#

then the mini pc will work just fine, more than fine

red ridge
#

Hmm... so it sounds like I'll need to replace the GTX 760 in my old machine to a 4090

#

though in fairness at least at first I'll stick to Google Assistant & maybe Siri

#

They'd be able to handle the smarts of the voice communication between the user and HA, and that would help keep things down. I'd only need voice for Level 4/5 events (Error/Fatal), which I'd be getting the HA to call me to tell me what's busted

And yes, the calls for the more serious issues is something I am dead set on having

#

in case you're wondering, that's going to be one of the core things for me. I have a very set in my mind way I want the levels to be recorded and processed by the HA

mental coyote
#

Calls. Like a call and you pick up and a voice tells whats wrong?

inner summit
red ridge
#

yeah, I will have some of the voice stuff

#

but since I'm only gonna have it ring me (else it'll be Google Assistant and Siri doing the work)... maybe I can get away with only needing TTS

inner summit
#

you know in both android and ios you can set custom text message sounds. you could just text yourself whatever it would be a million times easier to accomplish and reliable than this voice stuff

red ridge
#

It'd use VoIP though, so as not to incur fees for an extra phone line

#

It's to do with the workflow I'm setting out that I specifically want (and am dead set on)

And it involves different event levels having different responses. The phone call is for the highest level events (lower levels would simply be a push notification). Though it will also have fallback methods if the phone call wasn't answered

Thus, please stop trying to get me to change away from the voice stuff. I'm not changing and it just wastes everyone's time when you try to convince me to not use voice.
