#Zigbee Down Lighting

Hello Everyone,

I’m starting a zigbee network and need help with the first purchase. I’m looking for zigbee done lights, preferably ~6in. Right now there is nothing installed in the ceiling so it’s a blank slate. I’m looking for something that’s temperature changing and if possible (possible being within budget) rgb as well.

A zigbee controller suggestion would be good too since I have none right now.

Thank you.

hue is where I’d start. It won’t be cheap!

topaz wind

I looked at them but that is out of the budget. I have to buy for 4 rooms. That will cost more than the ceiling did.

#

Ok total I need 24 units. That’s more than $1,500.

surreal copper
#

Got it. The much much more budget solution is smart dimmer switches. But you obviously lose rgb and temp changes.

I have the ZBT-1 from nabu casa and it’s been pretty solid, but tbh I primarily have a zwave device network.

What about wifi lights? Wiz is pretty popular here, and has a lot of the benefits of Hue (but is much much cheaper, even though it’s also phillips)

I can do wifi. I currently have some tuya bulbs and wall switches but haven’t been able to uncloud them. That’s the reason for trying zigbee. If there’s an uncloud tutorial for tuya that would be helpful. Are wiz tuya as well?

surreal copper
#

I do not believe they are.

#

@daring rune will have more details if he’s around. He uses Wiz essentially exclusively.

With zigbee I also lose the fear of something getting unsupported. I’m assuming zigbee will never be unsupported by HA

surreal copper
#

I would not worry about zigbee or zwave, the nabucasa and ha teams have been very open about their support of both protocols.

topaz wind
#

Then wouldn’t it be better to go with one of those instead of WiFi?

surreal copper
#

🤷🏻‍♂️ hue lights are the number one recommended zigbee bulb. Wiz are a close number 2 in the WiFi space. The biggest concern should be finding a fully local solution because it’s far more likely for a cloud service to shut their servers down than HA killing support for any widely used protocol.

Im guessing we are waiting in code-in-progress to give his opinion

Wiz bulbs are what I use. They are WiFi, locally controlled and pretty awesome. I have 51 of them.

Currently looking for local light solution too. I can only recommend to stay away from yeelight and xiaomi ceiling lights (invested into 7 of em) cause they will loose connection regulary... and then u cant turn on the light. I want something local that is stable...

daring rune
#

That’s why I recommend Wiz. They have Philips quality while still being inexpensive and good on WiFi.

upper lark
#

I'll have to look into them then. I just have to make sure they can produce the same brightness as our current ceiling light

daring rune
#

Correction: the 5/6 inch ones are 1150lm.

upper lark
#

The ones we currently use claim to offer 3000 lm

#

Yeelight Arwen Ceiling Light 450S

daring rune
#

Without testing, I’d be wary of claims of 3000lm. But, yeelight is known for making up claims like that too.

upper lark
#

Those products look rly good. But the lights that have similar lumen to those that we currently use are pretty expensive (150€ each). I’ll rly have to think bout this….

daring rune
#

I'm not sure why you need 3000lm... but, that's really bright. I mean, even in my laundry room, where's it's super dark, I have 2 1100lm lights in there and it's almost blinding. I couldn't imaging multiple 3000lm can lights in an indoor room unless they are like 15+ feet above the room maybe.

topaz wind
#

Talking about lms, would 4 wiz down lights be to much for a room that is 10 x 12 feet? I was thinking of putting them about 1 foot and a half from each corner

surreal copper
#

Probably gonna be pretty bright at 100%, but the good news is you don’t need to run them at 100%

#

Already ruled out due to cost

topaz wind
#

What wall switches should I use?

surreal copper
#

You’ll want something with a smart bulb mode. This will let the bulbs keep power to them but be controllable from the switch or the bulb itself (in HA) without losing connection to the network. I think inovelli ($$$) and zooz make options for this.

topaz wind
#

@daring rune do the rgb and white down lights reproduce the same color temp? I ask because I would like to put 3 whites and 1 rgb in the rooms and use the rgb one for notifications. But I’m worried it will reproduce a different tone when I’m using it for just white.

daring rune
#

They're close in terms of temp. All my bulbs are RGB, so I can't really test that.

#

The cost diff between RGB and just White is pretty negligible, so I went full RGB.

topaz wind
#

Ok

topaz wind
#

Where can I buy them? Only off their site?

daring rune
#

Depends on where you are in the world 🙂 Amazon sells them world-wide.

#

If you're US based. I would go with either Home Depot or Walmart. Both of them sell them in-store and online.

topaz wind
#

Just found them on Amazon. I have a PO Box in Miami for export since I live in Latin America. But we have the same wiring as usa

daring rune
#

Ahhhh, perfect.

topaz wind
daring rune
#

Nope. You don’t need a can for that. You’d just drill out a 5/6” opening for it and it recesses into that.

topaz wind
#

It’s actually a suspended ceiling where it’s going to go

daring rune
#

None of mine are in cans.

daring rune
topaz wind
#

But how’s the connection? I can’t find how the wires look in the back of it

daring rune
#

It just uses standard wiring. Load, neutral and ground.

topaz wind
#

Ok that’s perfect then

#

And just to confirm that’s the “retrofit” ones?

#

The one I posted the link to

daring rune
#

Yup.

topaz wind
#

Ok thanks

Did anybody try the WiZ SuperSlim ceiling lamp 32W? Is it reliable? Just today my xiaomi ceiling light did disconnect again after a couple days and I had to cut off power, turn on power again... and even then it wouldnt show in HA as available again... I had to reload the miato integration for it to show up again

Hello @daring rune , I have bought and installed 4 of the wiz downlights and they work perfect and are great. I just have one issue that maybe you have a solution to since you have 51 of them. When I turn them on in either HA of the wiz app they have a delay. This delay isnt the fade in time since I set it to 0. It seems they go to sleep when they are off for a long time and need to wake up before turning on. Is there a way to correct his before I go and buy all the ones I need? Thank you.

I like the aliexpress miboxer downlights. They seem to work really well. But I'm still looking for good downlights rgb cw/ww downlights for NZ that don't cost a fortune. Mainly I want lights that follow cicadian rythym

topaz wind
#

I bought 4 of the wiz downlights that where recommended to me and they work perfect except for that one issue i mentioned

#

If i get that fixed then im golden and will buy all the rest i need in one go

strong raft
#

I'll checkout wiz

#

whats the zigbee ones? I see wifi ones but I don't see CW/WW really don['t want a ton of lights on wifi

#

@topaz wind does space sense work with HA?

topaz wind
#

I didnt get zigbee, i got wifi ones

#

i dont mind them on the wifi

#

i havnt tried space sense to be honest

upper lark
#

I honestly wouldn't get any new WiFi devices... too unreliable for me. I'll only go with zigbee for now. A good zigbee setup is super reliable and a joy to use

I do have a SONOFF Zigbee Dongle. I will get my voice PE later today... but, what exactly are u planning to do? AFAIK the voice PE doesnt use any zigbee connectivity, or does it?
