I would try to get used to using yaml as soon as possible, there's a lot of addons that you have to use it for.

I would also just make a different dashboards for different sized screens, I attempted to make a universal one but it just wasn't worth it

You can also go to #1284965988642590891 there are a ton of people that can point you in the right direction. Yaml and css is definitely not a requirement for anything these days, but can be helpful with custom cards.
