#SEVERE interference

So there might be a few people here who already know my situation. I’m using HA in a store that’s partly an arcade, and I use it to turn all the machines on and off. Between a bunch of arcade cabinets full of electronics, typical industrial warehouse construction, and all sorts of other things, the biggest struggle I’ve had with HA and Zigbee has been dealing with interference.

After a GREAT DEAL of struggle at first, I finally settled into a working system that was pretty reliable aside from a few issues popping up here and there. The most important changes I made were 2 things:

  1. to swap out the first plugs I got that included energy monitoring for ones that didn’t, so my network wouldn’t be spammed

  2. purchase a POE coordinator with a decent antenna and place it in the direct center of all the devices

Everything worked well until yesterday, when we installed a brand new, massive VR game. All of a sudden, 95% of the Zigbee devices were unresponsive or glitching out. wled devices worked fine, but for whatever, this new game is absolutely demolishing my Zigbee mesh and I don’t know why or how to fix it. I don’t think it’s emitting any wireless signals, and while it’s a VR game, it’s in a spot where there was already a VR game, which we moved behind it.

All I know is that if I turn off the new VR game, my network comes back online. It’s crazy.

Does anyone have any advice?

Sounds like it’s emitting some noise

(And it shouldn’t to conform to standard)

Can you describe the system in more detail? Maybe there is some sort of ground loop or something that can be eliminated by using different length wires (to change its antenna properties) or some ferrites on the signal wires

What hardware did the game add?

I'd suspect some form of wireless (2.4 GHz) link involved

Oh, I remember your setup... lol I agree with Tinkerer. That new game is probably blasting 2.4ghz BT or WiFi traffic all over the place. Not sure how you can really tone that down though.

Sorry, I didn’t know I had responses because this new forum method here doesn’t notify me the same way…

I’ve been working to eliminate any possible source of 2.4 and I’m going to see if it helps. This stupid game has two Samsung TVs and two desktop computers in it, all of which have 2.4 enabled by default. Turning it off on the PCs was challenging enough since the game software doesn’t like stopping, but turning off wifi on the TVs is even harder. I officially hate Samsung. There’s also literally NO way to turn off bluetooth on those TVs. None at all. I couldn’t even get into the service menu to do it, because as soon as I finally found the right button combination it gave me an error and wouldn’t load the menu. Dear Samsung: you suck.

And now, for some reason, the Aqara button I was using to turn everything on and off has completely stopped responding. The battery is fine, and I can pair it to the coordinator just fine, but I don’t see HA getting any button presses.

Have you considered Z-Wave or some other 800MHz protocol?
