I’ve been using notify.my_tablet with a message of command_screen_on but it only works 1/10 times. Does the tablet need to be in a certain state to reliably support this?

sounds like the tablet may be dozing (sleeping) which means the notification may not reach the device. make sure the app is excluded from battery optimizations and also follow the critical format to speed up delivery https://companion.home-assistant.io/docs/notifications/critical-notifications/#android

does it only work if the screen is "asleep but no locked"? i thought maybe i noticed that pattern - works until the device fully locks...

not really a pattern...by default notifications respect a devices doze setting but you can tweak the notification to always wake the device

ok. i'm playing with the Fully Kiosk app too. The tablet is on our fridge and i want it to wake to the home screen when i am near it, and time out after i leave it (Screen off)

that's the end goal, at least.

dd you make sure to grant the app background access?

dependng on devcie manufacturer you may have multiple settings to tweak
